no root and wireless tether works - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

I received a used Note 2 on Xmas and quickly installed my micro SIM and sure enough, Jelly Bean downloaded before I knew what functions I was losing. I don't purchase internet at the house because I have been tethering for 3 years straight. I am currently wi-fi tethering using Fox-Fi full version. I had not even recalled purchasing the paid for version of Fox-Fi , but in my search for finding a tether I tried it again and it is working. I apparently purchased it when I was trying to tether my Droid Charge before I rooted it.
I originally thought I could only USB tether, so I did that for 2 days. Just a few minutes ago I tried the option to tether wirelessly. The phone forced me to create a screen pattern unlock (not something I usually use) and a backup pin code in case I am locked out of the screen lock (pattern). After doing this, I had to create a pass phrase for the wireless encryption.....after doing this I entered the info in my laptop and it connected. I feared FOX FI might have "backdoored" me into Verizon and ordered the hotspot feature, but no.....I checked by trying to activate the factory hotspot and got the "contact us if you want this feature activated" screen.
I am not a developer and I DON'T KNOW HOW OR WHY THIS IS THE ONLY APP WORKING RIGHT NOW FOR ME.
I just wanted to share what I just found. I have relied on this site for phone maintenance and enjoyment for 3 years and wanted to try to pay it forward. My phone is not rooted (not sure it can be since I took the OTA).
I'd like to think this will help out a few folks........try it out and let me know if it works for y'all.

Confirmed that it does work on nonrooted note 2 after 4.3 OTA

I also have a Note 2 And With FoxFi after the Update From 4.1.2 to 4.3 I lost all access to be able to tether without the verizon box coming up asking for me to back for it. Is there any way around this Other that Custom Rom?

yes.....no root and running factory ROM

Yes.....I am running a 100% STOCK phone. I am not rooted and I am running factory ROM. I'd suggest reinstalling fox fi.
Like I said, I had to implement a screen pattern lock. But fox fi directed me to that. Other than doing that, install was straightforward and usual.

Once you get it setup you can remove the lock screen pattern if you want and it still works. You just need the lock screen pattern for the initial setup.

How'd you disable the lockscreen security? Mine are grayed out. I have to have pin, pattern or password. All other options are grayed out.

Use the pattern option first. Then purposefully mess up on your pattern 5 times. You will then see an option at the bottom of your lockscreen to reset your security using your email. Type in your email credentials and it will reset your lock screen security which will allow for swipe to unlock. You don't have to setup your lock screen security again if you just want swipe to unlock.

Thanks. I had a pin and neve had a forgot password option when entering in the wrong pin. Pattern fixed that.

FoxFi Works with 4.3
I download the Payed for version. Works Perfect thanks.

I have always found this to be true. I've never ever had to pay for tether and have been tethering (for free) since day one. I've tethered from my old G1 (tmobile), then my galaxy s Vibrant (tmobile), Galaxy nexus (verizon) and not my note 2 (verizon) all using the "1-click tether" app. Never had to create any accounts, lock patterns or pass codes. I honestly don't know why everyone thinks tethering is not free. It is completely free and the only company i have not tested it out on is Sprint. My sister and brothers are on ATT and i've tested it with their phones (both GSIII's).

There's two with that name. I'm looking at the one that's got the higher rating.
In looking at that app, it looks like it's not working on the 4.3 update as I specifically see people mentioning problems using it with Note II phones updated to 4.3 on Verizon.

[Q] Bypass Sprint activation

Hey Folks, I am an owner of a new HTC Evo View 4g hoping to find answers to the following questions...
Is there a way to bypass the Sprint Hands Free Activation when you power up Evo View 4g?
Is there a way to cancel the constant sync of nothing? When it is powered on an connected to wifi the "sync" icon shows up, but when I go to Settings>Accounts & Sync, there is nothing checked. So I click on "Cancel Sync" and it stops.
I have S-off, root and CWM recovery, with HBoot 1.13.
Any help would be appreciated.
I would like to know how to disable the hands free activation as well, it is super annoying. My View is bone stock, unrooted.
Bump!
Anyone have any ideas?
Install No Lock - click on No Lock to switch on Locking Disabled - when you next boot up No Lock blows away the Sprint Logo and Activation screen - at least that worked for me
I think you can get rid of the nagging prompt if you can somehow obtain the MSL/SPC code.
If I am thinking this correctly, after you obtain the MSL/SPC code, you need to go into EPST mode (read here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1146127) then change the phone number to something else...
The hard part is getting the MSL/SPC.
OR you can just sign up for a service, have it activated, then just turn the radio off and cancel the service within 3 days for a full refund.
Done.
No Lock works for me too!
Thanks matthew2582. The No Lock app trick works for me too. For the benefit of others who wan't to try it, i noticed the following caveats: The tablet must be in Airplane mode (yes, wifi still works in airplane mode) and you must turn the tablet off rather than use the restart option.
Love this forum. I looked for solutions on this issue for hours unsuccessfully (well, I found options that involved rooting the tablet, but didn't want to go that route) before finding this.
Does anyone have a link to NO LOCK? I have purchased these as gifts so I want to give them the information on how to remove the activation menu if required.
Also, can this be done from STOCK without ROOTING?
No Lock is free of charge and in the Market here -- https://market.android.com/details?id=org.jraf.android.nolock
And you don't need to do anything in terms of changing any wifi or airplane settings -- just install the app, enable No Lock and you are all set
Sent from my HTC_Flyer_P512_NA using Tapatalk
And I forgot to mention -- no rooting required -- just stock app for stock tablet
Sent from my HTC_Flyer_P512_NA using Tapatalk
Matthew...good news. Thank you! One last question, if you uninstall No Lock, will the Sprint items stay gone?
Nothing is being changed or removed in any way -- No Lock just turns off screen locking and has the coincidental effect of zipping past the Sprint boot screen and their activation screen

I installed No Lock and still get the sprint boot screen and activation, any tips or tricks I'm missing?
I wonder if there is an app in titanium backup you can freeze to get rid of this...

Hrmph, not finding any place that has a phone number to change here.
Has anyone contacted sprint or htc to see if there is anything that can be done to remove the activation? I'm sure there has to be someway to disable it. I mean I'm sure not everyone that's buying them is using them on the sprint network. Maybe if you call HTC they can help out.
Also an easy way to get the MSL is in terminal emulator just type "getprop ril.MSL" (no root required) I'm not sure if it works on the view but I know it works on sprint phones.
Has anyone tried this?

You can use Titanium Backup and I believe root is required. You can also do it by typing a command into Terminal Emulator. "pm disable /system/app/nameofapk.apk"

[Q] Razr with Stock ICS (not rooted): Can't Tether???

Sorry to post a new thread if this is duplicated, can't find the specific topic for not-rooted Razr yet...
I am running stock not-rooted ICS and I did do a factory reset after the update.
ICS has been running nicely on my Razr, but last night I needed tethering and couldn't get it running. It did use to work with GB, and I *am* paying for the tethering service (corporate).
Tried Settings => Tethering & Mobile Hotspot => Mobile Hotspot (tap to turn on). This turns the feature on for a few seconds, it provisions, then places a quick notification, then turns off. I've repeated this numerous times.
Can also duplicate this in Mobile Hotspot Settings. Configure Mobile Hotspot stays greyed out, so can't configure.
Is there something I'm missing?
can't reproduce this,
stock ics non-rooted razr maxx
I've been trying since I flashed .211.... My experience was about the same worked at first then out. I can connect and shows connection with limited connectivity. Can't get data to run correctly works for maybe a second the goes out. I give up sucksssssss. I may go back to gingerbread I need my tether... The guys at foxfi are working on it. Hopefully they figure it out.

Hi, i have installed an Stock ICS:
673.94.324.XT910.PSHAsiaRetail.en.03 / 4.0.4
My device is rooted, i did a full clean install of ICS and also i am not able to tether when it worked just perfect on GB after doing this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1435619&page=2
I tried the same tips on that thread but it makes no difference on ICS, i have tried the native option, WiFi Tether beta version with different device profiles: Generic ICS, Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Motorola Droid Razr (on this one the error is: "Setting ad-hoc mode.. Failed")
I hope someone can figure out how to make this work as it did on GB.

I don't mean to be cheeky, but given you are totally stock and paying for the service, I'd be burning up the lines to my provider for not providing for a paid for service. In the meantime, FoxFi from the play market should hold you over.
Call 'em up and make 'em fix it!
Cheers,
SteveRN
Actually just discovered the problem last night. I will be calling them when I get home from work today...
That said, I would much rather work here with all you wonderful foks here at XDA than to be in an automated phone message tree for 3 hours.
Well, I called VZ support from my office. They verified all my account stuff and looked over the phone -- all looked good.
Then they had me reboot the phone.
Now it works.
Duhhh.

[Q] PowerToggles HotSpot on new 4.3 OTA?

My phone is bone stock, not even rooted. I'm currently running MI1 (and stupidly took the MDK OTA when it came out, without waiting to find out what it did).
I have been using Power Toggles (on MDK and ME7 and MI1) to turn the built in hotspot on and off (free WiFi tethering, no root required).
Can anybody tell me if PT still works for using the built in hotspot on the new 4.3 OTA?
On MDK, it worked without a hitch. On ME7 and MI1, it works, but it displays a dialog that I need to call some Verizon number to subscribe to tethering. But, I just press the Home key to dismiss the dialog and the hotspot turns on and works anyway.
I saw one report in the 4.3 OTA thread that said PowerToggles doesn't work on 4.3. But, I'd like to get some confirmation on that, if possible.
Anybody know?
TIA!

According to nyonya, here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=46923662#post46923662
FoxFi WiFi works on 4.3. The info on it in the Play Store also says it works on Verizon S4s with the 4.3 OTA.
No root required.
Thanks man, but FoxFi requires to have the security certificate and all the crap install so kinda avoiding it.
I have tired both in the past and i found that the internal hot spot thing is way better then any software out there.

The FoxFi description on Play gives a way to get around that certificate thing. Well, you still have to have the cert installed, but it tells you how to get around having to have a lock screen. Just FYI.
I kinda want to upgrade to 4.3, so I think I'm going to go ahead and do it and if FoxFi is the only way to still have WiFi tethering, then I'll use it! If a better option comes along, I'll change. But, I don't want to just stay on 4.2, just so I can use the built-in hotspot.
I can now confirm:
- The PowerToggles hotspot thing does not work on 4.3.
- FoxFi WiFi works just fine, even on my Unlimited Data account. I was getting 30Mbps down/ 10 up in SpeedTest on my phone before I upgraded to 4.3. I still get that. And when I tether my tablet to my phone through FoxFi (post-upgrade), I also get 30/10 on my tablet.
- You do have to set a pattern or PIN screen lock to get FoxFi to work. But, the instructions FoxFi has posted in the app description on Play do work for getting rid of the screen lock, and FoxFi still works afterwards. If I go into my screen lock settings, the choices for swipe, Face, and None are all greyed out, but after using the steps they said, my phone is actually behaving as a swipe to unlock.

FoxFi is back!

Hey guys, I tried FoxFi yesterday and it was coming back!
Today, I tried again with different configurations like removing and reinstalling FoxFi certificate, changing Hotspot ID and passwords and then it was gone. I was confused and I cleared the data of the FoxFi app and still not working. Then I entered stock recovery and wiped cache. Hey, it was coming back! I want to know if this trick is also working for you, guys too.

Thx. Got me going again also.
Glad to hear.
I got a response from the developer. It was something that Verizon did. Hopefully they can keep on top of any other changes Big Red implements.
I got this Note 3 Verizon from USA that was already unlocked. I am now using it on Telenor (Different Carrier). How could a person like me could subscribe their Hotspot plan? Verizon should think about it before blocking the method like this. Bah!
I used foxfi long time with contract verizon with galaxy nexus, i continued to use it with prepaid
now i on note 3 and foxfi ridiculous, it required to use certificate, but it required me to setup pin, but i dont like it.
but it still not turn hotspot in one click. it useless for me, may it helps turn on hotspot without subscripton.....

It means the phone is not locked to a specific carrier. ..but it does not mean that every app will work. The Verizon hotspot program first checks to see if you have a verizon plan that includes hotspot before it will turn on the hotspot.
You need a different hot spot app. Look on the Play store...there are several. Search for "WiFi Tether"

So, there is absolutely no way of wresting hotspot from Verizon, so as to enable you toggle it on/off at will? Who knows whether phones with unlocked bootloader are totally independent of Verizon?
I know that FoxFi free works when you are tethering, but file sharing applications like ShareIt, Xender which also need the hotspot cannot turn it on. Thus, sm-n900v can send files to other phones via shareIt but it cannot receive from them.

You can not use Verizon's hotspot as-is, you must use a 3rd party application like FoxFi but with that 3rd party application. Or if you install one of the several Touchwiz modified ROMs the hotspot app has already been modified to eliminate the check with Verizon to see if you are allowed to use it. An example would be the Jasmine ROM.
Bootloader unlock has nothing to do with "need" for Verizon. Bootloader unlock means you can install a real recovery, install a ROM with a modified hotspot app. and/or install a different kernel (boot partition).

Thank you very much for the clarification. I still think though that if foxfi could work round it to get the to get the Hotspot to work, so could there be an app that beat the Verizon restriction - a patch perhaps.
I rooted my SM-N900V with the Arabic tool. I think it probably did more than just rooting because I can go to the bootloader with ease. Isn't that what unlocking the bootloader is all about? I'm not so keen yet though on flashing a custom ROM.

Smart Lock Trusted Locations does not work

Trusted Location not working is a common problem with various devices, but so far I never encountered any issues on my S8. However, with the S9+ I cannot get it to work. Adding your current location still leaves the phone locked. I rebooted, deleted, edited and added new locations, with no success. Anyone experienced similar issues?
It was working on my S8+ but a few weeks ago became very inconsistent. S9+ is no different. I suspect its Google related.
For some reason it started working now. Did not do anything. Seems to be a sporadic service issue, like you said.
It has stopped working for me completely in my S8 running Oreo.
Just wondering if there are any new devopments on this. None of the so-called "solutions" I have found on the internet (erasing cache etc.) work. Has everybody just given up? S8 running oreo here.
To me it works sometime and sometimes it doesnt. I have tried to do it in so many differenr way but still luck. Just works when it wants to. Funny part is with my pixel 2 xl it worked 100% of the time on oreo 8.1 so it most be something withing samsung tweaks.
People have been complaining about this for quite a while now...too bad it can't just work reliably.
By chance, do you use any type of managed email service?
For example, I have a work provided Microsoft Office 365 account. Configuration of the account on the phone requires the application to have device admin privileges and one of the permissions disabled the option of Smart Lock, which infuriates me but I understand.
It's worth checking the make sure nothing that has device admin privs is blocking that feature.
I had the same problem with my S8+. Then I jumped to the Note8, and it worked perfectly (every single time, without exception).
Now, with my S9+, it's useless. It has never worked. Not once. Pretty damn ridiculous.
On Note8 with Oreo it didn't work. Now I'm on S9+ and I'm not sure because bluetooth works well. I tried to turning BT off and the phone staid unlocked. So who knows...
I did have to remove and re-add my home address in the Smart Lock app, but after doing so it does unlock using the location now.
Restarted the phone to confirm it "sticks" and it does. Of course, the first unlock after a restart is always going to want security, but after that it is working as expected.

Give it a few hours after not rebooting.

Considering I did this a week ago, and it still works now, I'm thinking that is a few hours.

This thread isn't about Bluetooth.

i find if I move around between my trusted locations, it'll work. But if I stay in one place for more than a few hours, it'll stop auto-unlocking.

So far so good. I've been home for a few hours and Smart Lock is working well on both my s9 and s9+. Had my s9 with me all day and no restarts.
I should add that I don't keep my phones on High Accuracy, keep them on Battery Saver. One thing I did when I reset my home address was I used the Add a Place and used the Lat. and Long the phone had me at. It was close to my address but it placed me closer to my neighbor. Don't know if this is what helped make Smart Lock stick...

None of that works for me. If I reboot, it'll work for a bit, but then eventually stop working again.
It doesn't work for me neither
