Anyone know why the density looks so drastically different between both variants? The Verge pics make it very clear something was lost in vanilla. I want the GPE version. But I want the Ultra in general because I want to see more info using the real estate, not because I'm impaired. I was hoping to avoid rooting a phone for the first time but it might be unavoidable. On my Note going from 320 to 260 is sooo much better use of space. Phone DPI on 6.4" would be way too cartoonish and such a waste. Anyone know the DPI settings for both versions?

400 is such a waste. If I root I loose all future OTA updates right? I'm trying to avoid flashing to get vanilla android, thus GPE.

No, you can still get OTA. Just make sure you back the original build.prop and when you get OTA switch to the original buid.prop file and the OTA would go through just fine.

It's technically the same device, just with a larger screen and worse camera.
Well, the development for this phone kind of slow, i remember when i use samsung s2, so much development and i keep changing rom, if not that much people use this phone, i hope any development in Z1 will benefit us

Yup, you're right. They use the same internals, so it should be possible to cross-develop between these two devices, much like what's being done with the Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Note (same internals, only the Note has a bigger screen).

Yea I kind of agree....but listen we just started and already running Cyanogen, which is extremely stable for beta
Soon we will get more rom's/themes
Oh yea remember Z1 is better cuz the camera (and smaller screen providing little bit more FPS )
Stay tuned.

That was exactly my thought when I was going to change device.
I thought about it for a second and then I got the ZU instead.
Reasons for my choice?
-old processor
-no sd slot
-extreme fragility
-LG
-no LTE
-no USB OTG
And others that do not come to mind right now.
I agree, it's cool to have the latest OS, but going through several devices I came to the conclusion that it's better to have a .1 revision less but more stability instead of the latest rushed just to have it.
If I feel the need to have more I always have custom ROMs.
And hey, my wife's Z had 4.1.2 when she got it, and a few months later it was updated to 4.2.2, so I'm not feeling "left out" by Sony in terms of updates.

Feel the same too, Sony seems to keep they devices up to date very well, but I can understand they do not want to make so many different updates. 4.3 and 4.4 come far too close for give want to company to update all the time.

I guess if you have to have the latest OS you just need to install a custom Rom..
I've surprised myself this time though.. I've just stayed at the stock rom with Xposed etc installed.
I could never have done that with my old Samsung device, but the Sony experience is much closer to stock.
same problem...still waiting for Sony to update...others have made it already..but dnt know for what Sony is waiting.....

Jeez, I'm used to Samsung update cycle which was pretty slow. November would be pretty good in my opinion for an update. I'm a fan of Sony launcher so far, as other people have said it's very close to stock which suits me well.

I wouldn't mind skipping from 4.2 to 4.4 since 4.3 doesn't really have a whole lot of features that I'm interested in. I'm getting a Nexus 5 as my main device anyways though, so the Ultra will be more for music and comics.
I'm running 4.3 now... obviously CM10.2...
But that latest update coming 4.3.1 is only 10mb... stated as... "stability and improvement fixes"
I think we need to get out of the mindset that an 'update' is actually going to make our life better. Sometimes the update is more of a parallel move, and not a linea increase...

Bought this tablet to build a bridge to the new Nexus 10.
I have had the new Asus Transformer tf701 but it's terrible bad. The tf700 was way better build.
But anyway... Why is the XDA community so small here?
I don't see custom Roms based on stock. Why is that? I don't like CM and don'twa nt to lose feature as remote control.
Are the stock roms that good they don't need development?
And the funny thing is that Sony encourage Rom development.
Yeah I've had my tablet for a bit now and I'm pretty happy with stock though some stock based rom would be great if anybody could make one

There is already a stock based ROM to be created, but it is being delayed. I'm the official tester (though not the one making it), and I'm waiting for it new stuff to test for weeks... Om going to contact the dev in the weekend to see the progress...

in relation to previous comments, i agree that stock 4.3 rom is good. it has a few bugs but i can live with it..
it's smooth and no lags.. games are excellent.. plus xposed framework for xperia is filling up some extra features..

I must agree in everything you all say. I underestimated the tablet Z. It's better than the tf700. And the looks and feel are very convenient.
Sony did a great job on this.
I am a bit of a flashoholic that's why I have asked.... But why change something when it's already good. And with xposed there is a lot of personal tweaks possible.
Never the less, would be great to try some custom stock Roms.
BTW is there a xposed mod to set the navigation bar to the left again? Still don't understand why they did that on a 10 inch tablet

Have a read in the two dev sections CM 11 is there as is the GPe port
You can flash the GPe ROM which is pretty much flawless, but we can't "covert" them quite yet though, so you won't be able to receive OTA updates and live the good life. You'll have to give Bigxie or some other dev a couple of "minutes" on the update so it doesn't brick our devices.
TL;DR: Flash GPe, live your life, wait for an updated build here when a GPe OTA gets released.

Yep, all the models are more or less the same. My c6802 more often than not thinks it's a c6833. IF you flash a ROM (modified Stock) from a c6802/6806 on a c6833 you will lose some or all of the LTE bands, but they will come back when on the correct ROM

The Bitter Sweet taste of too many choices
I am myself a AOKP kinda guy, and now we of course have the choice between all the ususal suspects, CM10/11, OAKP, even Slim and of course GPe.
Just a week or so before Xmas we were alle trying that Omni-thingie without BT-support or what it was, and everybody was eagerly awaiting someone to port the GPe over to the 8633.
I had to try the GPe my self of course, even thought I soon had my eyes on the AOKP and Slim, and I don't know why this annoys me, but I'm pretty ****ing pleased with the Gpe. It's just awesome. It feels right, it acts right, it got ART support if you want, Xposed gives me everything AOKP did and I justg like this GPe so much that it annoys me.
Everything works for me. LTE, BT. WIFI, this and that. I have not had one single problem with this damn annoyingly near perfect GPe ****.
I'm addicted to flashing ROM's though, so I'm craving a hit soon, hehe. You know, these good'n'oldies give us flash-junkies our weekly shot of weeklies and nightlies and you know how it is. And that I miss with the Gpe. No new nightlie to look for, no new .... nothing to look for ever since I installed it 2-3 weeks ago.
But it's just too ****ing smooth and nice that I canot make my self flash something else, without just restoring the backup i would make right back, hehe.
GPe ZU
hi. i know im very late on this topic.
but to put it brief:
my current phone died so i need to get back to the z ultra
i got the new phone bcs the ultra wasnt without flaws
i just discovered that there is a gpe for it
so you can vouche for the gpe rom on the ultra?
bcs one of the reasons to discard the ultra was that sony's android doesnt top 5.1
how is that on the gpe? does that one go past 5.1?
and if i were to make it gpe, could you tell me the procedure?
i really like the ultra, but i had hoped it would perform better
hope to hear from you
much appreciated
A few weeks ago, my Nexus 5 got the OTA Lollipop 5.0 update. After rooting it using the WugFresh root tool kit, I had some time to mess around in it and it's not that big of an improvement over 4.4.x, IMHO. I am actually enjoying my 4.4.2 ZV6 with the xposed framework way more than the AOSP version of Lollipop. I think the much anticipated Lollipop has had way too much hype and the improvements generally serve Google and Service providers more than the end user. I'm content to wait till our developers get their hands on our official G3 release. Until then, it's all good.
After seeing this review:
http://youtu.be/-S_jlTfbwFk
and playing with rom deodexed zv6 4.4.2 I am not impressed with 5.0 either. I really like this zv6 update and all its features, plus I keep my root and bump. My xposed modules still work. I'm a happy camper.
ROM I flashed: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=56953010

Once there's a complete, 100% working, stable Lollipop ROM for the LS990 I may try it, but at the moment I'm not really inclined to give up all the customization I've made to make MY G3 My OWN. A lot of things I've done just aren't going to work on 5.0 right now. Maybe never. Certainly not without root. 5.0 is just way more locked down than previous versions, greatly limiting the things apps can do.
And the OP is right, I think. A lot of the changes benefit the manufacturers, carriers, and corporate interests more than they do users like us.
Materialz. Nuff said.
The look isn't nearly enough to make up for the loss of functionality.
Even if I liked the look, which I don't. Dear God, some of the colors Google has put in there are just puke-inducing ugly.
I don't see nothing special about 5.0. Am guessing most of it is under the hood. I like the animations but the colors don't do it for me.

I agree. It looks like they really mailed it in. We can complain about the manufacturer overlays like LG Touchwiz, Sense etc., but without some touch up, it's unappealing. Unfortunately there's the bloatware from the carrier. Xposed and the customization modules, or custom. roms from our developers really give it some pop.
