Internet during calls? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Is there a way to enable Internet connection While on the phone? HTC evo 4G no problem. can this be done on note 3?

As long as you have 4G you have no problems using the phone and being online. I was lucky and able to keep my s3 and use it as a hotspot when I am on 3g.

I have my s3 activated under a different number. I turn wifi on my n3 and hotspot on my s3 when I'm in a 3g area and on the phone and I'm good to go.

Ok thanks. I wonder why with
HTC you could do with 3g...

Anyone know if there is a setting to allow 3g while on the phone? I am rooted.

You could on 4g or Wi-Fi. I don't remember being able to do it on 3g but you can on the s3 with 3g.

It's because those devices had an extra antenna built in...The s3 could do it as well. There is no setting you can turn on or off to get it to work as far as I'm aware.

I believe that the S3 has an SVDO antenna (allows voice and data over 3G), and ours has an SVLTE antenna, which allows simultaneous voice and data over 4G. Terrific of you have good 4G coverage. On the fly (in-call) change to WiFi, I'm not sure it's possible.

I testify that on the fly wifi is possible. ..I do it all the time. If it wasn't possible I'd have to throw this phone out the window...lol. at the least change carriers ...I'm a truck driver and in 3g a lot not to mention I'm on the phone a lot. Actually, IIRC, only HTC devices at this point have two radios that can do simultaneous voice and data. Even then, the voice is being transmitted on the CDMA1x network and data on EVDO.
Thanks for the quick response

I tested this last night while in a 3g only area, and you can indeed use data while on the phone in a 3G area with this phone. IIRC the thunderbolt is capable of this as well.
4G can do silmultaineous data/voice.

It is only on AT&T. They used to have the commercial about talking and surfing on iphone where the guy forgets his anniversary and makes a reservation while talking with his wife.
Only ATT allows it for the iphone.. but ATT is definitely not the only carrier that allows this like they claimed in their commercials. Probably why you don't see those anymore lol. GET SUED!!!! haha
I've been a verizon customer for a day, came from CSpires mess and haven't looked back. Love my actual 3G speeds and the latest and greatest phones. I don't live in a 4G area but new Orleans and mobile are 1.5 hours away. Excited to see what this thing can do on 4g

The quick answer is yes. The Thunderbolt and Rezound can do voice/data over 3G.
The long answer is no. The Thunderbolt and Rezound technically do data over 3G and voice over 1X on a separate radio.
LTE is a data-only protocol for now and voice is done over either 1X (in HTC's case) or eHRPD (in all other LTE phone's case)

So does it only work on 3g or also on 4g? If you're in an area with good 4g would you have to go through settings while on phone to turn off LTE to then use the 3g?
Whether in 3g or 4g, the Rezound and Thunderbolt can do both voice and data at the same time. Other 4g devices must be connected to 4g to do it.
Can anybody confirm if wifi tether continues to push data when talking and in a 3g zone.
I was using Verizon's tethering the other day and pushed an email through while on the phone. Thats why I came looking for this thread. Holy crap this is the happiest day of my life!!!
So, yes, I can confirm that tethering continues in 3g while on the phone.
Why is this not listed as front page news? Or one of the phone's top benefits?
That explains why I was getting IM's in Facebook while I was on the phone and 4G is turned off. Hah.. Good phone. thanks all. Suck it iphone! lol

EVO LTE supports SVDO!

.....So, the LG Viper does SVDO (Simultaneous 1X/3G voice/data) and according to reports, the EVO LTE also supports this. How great would it be if this phone, like the LG Viper, had it working out of box?!
Even more of a reason that I'm getting one.

I didn't realize people didn't know this yet. If you read the FCC docs posted last month the lab tests showed it. It's not so much a CDMA thing as it is a phone/hardware thing. You can Google it to find out more. And correct you can do simultaneous voice/data with LTE the same way you could with WiMAX or WiFi.

Exactly, I just hope Sprint is very bullish with OEMs making their phones SVDO capable. They will have two phones with Viper and Evo 4G LTE. Hopefully all of their LTE phones going forward will be both SVDO and SVLTE capable. AT&T will no longer be able to run those commercials bragging about using data while on a phone call.
Btw glad to see you here.

Well as stated the LG Viper supports it as well. SVDO isn't really new, it's just now being implimented in our phones. So it's safe to say that Sprint is allowing for it since they had the OEM include it as well as it was tested in the lab.

I think I've been hoping for SVDO just as long as I've been hoping for EVDO-Rev B. And this was pre-EVO.
That's one down, the other may never happen, which is ok.
This would be an awesome feature, not that I would use it all the time but have at least wanted it for years.
Finally! Now I can actually talk on bluetooth while using my phone at the same time. Before I had to use that ****ty company issued T-Mobile MiFi...
This may sounds really ignorant, but why would this be beneficial? I've never yearned for this feature, and now I can't think of a time I'd need it honestly. Examples?

If you're in an hour long call while on a bus/car/train or whatever, and you're using a bluetooth headset or earpiece, this is VERY useful. I travel a lot so I find myself in this situation a lot.

The S3, EVO LTE, and S4(pre spark) could do it fine because they had 2 radios. They were sold around the time AT&T and T-Mobile were marketing the ability to do Talk and Data at the same time.
Since that time has passed, the new Spark Phones will not be able to do Talk and Data until VoLTE is enabled.. Yay!
It is a step back so I will be keeping my EVO LTE around incase I need the ability more often then not. :/

I don't think this is a Sprint specific thing. My work iPhone 5 (On Verizon) does the same thing.. as others have said there is only 1 radio.. probably cost savings/power savings is why they are doing it.
It is a CDMA thing. The Radio cannot do Data and Voice at the same time on the same radio. GSM is completely different technology so it doesn't have this limitation.
On the Sprint/Verizon phones that could do this, they either had separate 3G/4G modems, or Duel 3G and a 4G modem. It didn't help Battery life when more than one is in use, but it did get around the problem of data while on voice quite well.
No Spark Sprint Devices have this however. They all have only 1 radio at the moment so until VoLTE is turned on, No Voice and Data.
All you've gotta do is switch to T-Mobile. I've got talk text and internet all the same time.

That feature only works on AT&T network.
It's not actually a CDMA thing only. It's has to deal with the chipset. Even T-Mobile and AT&T you'll lose LTE while on call as manufacturers have consolidated the radios.
Yeah i lose data when I make a call on sprint. But with my t-mobile, it just drops to 3g (hspa) which is faster than sprints 4g anyways...

Another reason to keep your Note 3

I recently purchased a Galaxy note Edge for my daughter and rooted it to enable the Hotspot. Found out the Note Edge with Sprint Spark is single Antenna device. So, if the Hotspot is enabled and your using it to run a laptop. Then at the same time you receive a phone call it drops the Hotspot internet connection.
In other words you cannot receive calls and data at the same time. The Note 4, Note 5, Note Edge, S6, and S6 Edge all have a single antenna. The Note 3 is the last Samsung device to send and receive data and phone calls at the same time. Just another reason I still run a Note 3 . :good:

Please correct me if I am mistaken. However, my wife has a Note Edge which i rooted for her and I have the Note 3 (which I love) and she can get data while on a call. Simple test we did was for her to call me and then simply leave me talking while she surfs the web. She was able to do it multiple times as well as receive email too. She can do data while on a call. Does this mean that she has a dual antenna? Is there another test which I should perform further prove data and voice working simultaneously? Thanks again,

No I'm afraid not. The antenna is hardware not software they are all built with one antenna. Was the device on 3g or 4g lte or WiFi ? With sprint spark I know you can surf the net while on a phone call with a 4g lte signal. I don't know if this is true if the device is on a 3g signal, will try it on my daughters note edge once I can get the phone back ( young girls and cell phones need I say more ). What the device will not do is with the hotspot activated ( meaning the phone is being used as a wireless router running internet to a laptop ). If a call is received the hotspot internet connection is dropped.
With my note 3 I have been on the phone talking, surfing the net, and had some one using the hotspot for a laptop all at the same time a truly remarkable device.
Thanks for getting back to me. I have been able to go on with both LTE and 3G while on call and surfing. I see what you mean now about the hotspot as a router. I remember the days of doing that with my HTC EVO 4G LTE (sorry I regress). I will try the hotspot later today. Thanks again and i agree a great and versatile phone we own in the Note 3. It will be very hard for me to give up this phone for another. My son uses my old Note 2 and he loves it.

With my note 3 I have been on the phone talking, surfing the net, and had some one using the hotspot for a laptop all at the same time a truly remarkable device.

This is not accurate either. No sprint spark phone can do data on 4g while on a call. No data and call unless on WiFi till SVLTE is rolled out which is no time soon.

Not 3g only 4g. As stated the GS3, Evo Lte and LG Viper where the first and last phones that handled voice and data on 3g while on a call. The technology was called SVDO and it was out the door just as fast as it came.

Hmmm . . . yep !!! Very impressive download numbers, provided you can hit a Spark tower still pretty rare outside the big cities.

RayTrue04 is correct, after talking to my daughter about her Note Edge. She can't surf the net ( receive data ) while on a call with 3g or 4g LTE, she can however while on Wfi. I stand corrected.

I get it home and at work. Here in CT we received a pretty decent wimax rollout and so far Sprint has transitioned to TDD LTE pretty quickly too. I live in Hartford and pull a good 50-70 mbps but omw to work in Manchester is where it really flies pulling almost 100 mbps. Also VOLTE will be coming someday so calls and data will be possible. On top of that they're also going to turn on 3x Carrier Aggregation and also bring CA to their other LTE bands. Older phones can't take advantage of those perks. I would only rock to a Note 3 or older phone if Spark is still absent in my market which isn't.

How does she like her Note Edge? Us Note Edge users are pretty rare. Every time I run into one we both look at the other shocked and then breakout into a quick convo like we have an instant connection or something lol..
