As of right now I am on ME7, full stock and I am trying to understand if I can update to MI1 and use Safestrap to use this either Eclipse TW 2.1 Beta 2 or AOSP 4.3 Eclipse 5.1 Build 6 ROM by using MI1 Kernel Modules for Safestrap. If I can't update to MI1 and use either of those, can I stay on ME7 and use one of them by using the kernel module mentioned on the Safestrap thread?
There's so many currently used versions of the S4, and I can't keep straight what can and can't be done, other than that MDK can do whatever it wants.

If you choose to update to MI1 with root, you can install the TW based Eclipse rom in SS along with the MI1 module, but you can run any AOSP based roms since they dont use stock kernal. Just make sure not to update to MJ7 since SS does not work with it yet.

Thank you so much. I am now happily running MI1 Stock w/ root and Eclipse 2.1 TW!
I have always had MKD until recently when I took the 4.3 MJ7 update. Now I see that safestrap is available for MJ7.
Question: can you load any ROM in safestrap or does it have to be a ROM made specifically for SS? I know the Loki'd ROMs all include the kernel, but can you load them too into the SS slots?

Your question is answered in the Safestrap thread - it's VERY DANGEROUS flashing without reading.
No you can't load "any ROM". It must be compatible with the kernel on your stock ROM.

To All:
I will resurrect a thread on Safestrap Compatible ROMS on verizon S4. I will attempt to try installing and setting up before I post the ROM and the link to that ROM. Please feel free to add to this BUT this is not a thread to ask specific questions on those ROMS. Those threads exist in other forums.
No CM, ASOP, or GPE based roms are compatible with SS3.70/3.71 andriod 4.3 build.
NOTE:
All revisions of the I545 after MDK (ME7, MI1, MJ7, MK2) can NOT have a custom recovery like TWRP or CWM, only Safestrap can be used.
NOTE:
I will start including Antutu benchmarks based on my setups with each ROM
To locate your firmware version (build number) use Settings/More/About phone. Read the "Build number". The last 3 characters are how we describe what version your phone is using and why we always ask what build or base you have. Do not confuse this with the radio baseband.
You can not flash to previous firmware releases.
USB communication with S4 can be touchy, I recommend only using the samsung USB cable that was provided with the phone.
All files downloaded need to be verified to their checksum MD5. There are free md5 checkers for windows. I strongly urge to download to PC and copy to extsd card.
Can someone explain to me what makes a rom safestrap compatible? What can I do to a rom to make it boot with safe strap?
The ROM needs to be built to use the stock TouchWiz kernel that's on the phone, as Safestrap can't replace the kernel. (Flashing a non-Samsung kernel will set the "Knox Warranty Void" flag.) per k1mu
"The number one reason people brick their Verizon Galaxy S4 phones is due to attempts to flash TRWP or CWM custom recovery and using Goo Manager, dd, and other tools without understanding when those will or won't work. The Verizon S4 is very locked down, and will reject such attempts in most cases."

this ROM is available at Nitro's website and I won't post a link to it per xda rules I suspect that are in place.
I installed it and in process of setting up when I had issues with google playstore able to download and install ANY apps. This is a test build so its subjected to issues. I left nitro feedback on this issue. Could be due to my phone having MJ7 build base.

This is from the At&t forum. But it should be the same for Verizon? So maybe try them all and update your list.

Didn't see PurifieD on your list. I'm running it currently and love it. Just a handful of things here and there that could Use tweaking but by far, faster and cleaner than hyper drive. Just my $0.02.

you have to flash the fix from that website or the Play Store won't work, and you can't install any apps whatsoever. Also, the battery life on that ROM is a little lower than I remember Eclipse normally having. I've been an huge fan all along and finally the SS users can have it. It's a nice ROM, don't get me wrong. It's my DD

You can not run a custom kernel if you're not on an unlocked or bootloader build, which means the MDK bootloader for the i545. The kernel flash will fail, but the modules will probably flash and break WiFi.
If you're not MDK Loki'd, then you're running a stock kernel with incompatible kernel modules. Flash the NC5 kernel modules to fix it.
Hello, I am running CM11 M12 on my verizon gs4 MDK and I tried today to flash NC5 rom, stock and hyperdrive however I got the secure failed kernel, and upon a quick xda search I found that It is 4.3+ roms need safestrap? I dont think I installed Loki on my phone, but I could be wrong. I recovered to nandroid. I was just wondering If i could go to 4.4.2 TW ROM as I sometimes experience some WIFI & BT issues. As I am developing an app I want to make sure it works on stock rom, but I want to maintain root. Thanks in advance for any help.
