[Q] USB cover damaged. Where to find replacement? - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

The rubber seal around the micro USB charging port gradually came off after three or so months use - usage has been nothing major, just opening and closing it once daily.
I have been into the the Three UK store and they have said that it is not covered under their warranty.
Carphone warehouse have said that it could cost up to £170 to replace.
Sony Store have said that Three UK are legally obliged to provide a replacement but, as mentioned above, are unwilling to.
My question is, where can i go about getting a replacement rubber seal?
I am lost for words at how they have treated this matter.
Apologies, a little upset at how they have treated this widespread problem with the Z - line of devices.
Thanks for your help in advance.

Thread here has some pointers...

XDA repair needed - please help

Just before Christmas, I noticed that the XDA wasn't charging. Closer
examination revealed that, horror of horrors, there was a dent in the
casing which had bent the power connector terminal. The overall size of
the dent is about as big as the point of a pencil. It appears to have
been caused by a key whilst in my pocket, and whilst in its "protective"
leather case!
O2 told me to send it off the their specialist repair place in Norwich (
Radiophone Ltd), although the shop manager was pretty unhelpful, telling
me that if only I'd taken out insurance, he could have given me another
one - he was more interested in selling me a replacement. Eventually he
arranged for a jiffy bag to be sent to me to send it off in (It apparently
isn't possible to do this yourself). I was rather annoyed - although the
invoice says "insurance declined" on it, nothing was mentioned at the
time, AND it was £399 when I got it, AND I was ill and unable to take it
back within 14 days, AND the price then fell £100, AND they doubled the
memory to 64MB (you get the picture!). Probably I wasn't therefore as
reasonable about this as I might have been, because I started making
comments about Sale of Goods Act, Merchantable quality and so on.
To cut a long story (or even a longer one if I'm honest) short, the O2 XDA
repair centre says that it can't be repaired economically. I don't
believe them - the visible damage is so slight I think you could sell the
XDA without anyone noticing until they realised it wouldn't charge, and it
worked absolutely fine until the battery gave up. I think it likely that
a replacement connector on the bottom would fix it. The problem is O2 are more interested in selling me another one, and they tell me there is
nowhere in the UK where I could send it for a second opinion (I think
that's wrong too - the connector is physically the same as the iPaq and
Orange SPV).
To make matters worse I bought this on the one credit card I have that
doesn't have purchase protection!!!!
Anyway, the question is, does anyone know where I could send the dead XDA for a second chance of getting it fixed?
cheers
Richard
Oops, how silly do _you_ feel?
Unless you can find someone accredited by O2/HTC to repair under warranty there is nowhere else in the UK.
I would try to start again, telling O2 that the damage existed right out of the box.... Therefore, it is covered under warranty.
It's not honest, but they are not at all helpful are they? Personally I think O2 are rubbish. they make millions and when something like this comes down the line all they want is your money... again! and having only one service and repair facility is deplorable!

15 Days later this happens

Of course it happens 1 day after the return period. Hopefully this will be covered by Asus and not turn into a RMA nightmare. Does anybody have any info if this is an easy fix? Also my battery is draining at a more rapid speed too. Could these problems be related? The last 2 pins on the bottom are now broken off as well.
-UPDATE- 6/1/12
Sent it out for an RMA on May 18th, one day before my 30 day RMA would expire. I got it back from Asus after a couple little scares. First, I forgot to take out my Class 10 32gb Micro SD card. I went on to the support chat and they said it was no problem and happens all the time. I called customer service after and they made an addendum to my RMA saying an SD card was included. After about a week and a half of the status saying "Repairing" it finally changed to "Waiting for customer reply OOW-CID" I again went straight to support chat and they guy told me that it might be a case of Customer Induced Damage. I explained that it was most definitely not CID. He told me to call and explain my case becomes sometimes it turns out not to be CID. Procrastination got the best of me and I forgot to call. Next thing I know I get an email saying Asus shipped my Prime back. At this point I just hoped for the best. Coming home June 1st I see a little package right outside my door. All the time wondering why Fedex didn't have anyone sign for it like the directions say. Someone could have a nice little tablet assuming they were brave enough to take it off my steps. Opened it up and BAM! Fixed good as new!!!! SD returned and everything! The only thing that I was a little puzzled by was they gave me back my crappy broken cord. Which is what started this whole thing in the first place. I don't really care about that since I got another one off eBay for like 8 bucks. So here's the breakdown:
Pros-
Fixed for free
SD card was taken care of
Only 12 calendar days (not work days) until it was back in my hands
No new scratches/dents/cracks/bleeding/anything from being opened and worked on
Very helpful customer service
Cons-
Didn't replace cord (No big deal)
Put me on that short list of people that had a very positive RMA experience. I thing Asus is starting to get it's shizz together after some less that stellar RMA performances. I sent mine to the Texas facility BTW.

Its not a factory flaw (although i think the connector on the tablet is asking for it), I'm afriad, youll be liable for the repair.
Battery drain could well be bacause there are pins shorting on each other, try to seperate any that are touching with tweezers etc (carefully)
Any idea how much they will charge?
I have similar damage to my dock (not tablet). It got dropped while being charged & landed on connector. Both cable & dock connector damaged. Definately a weak point!
I contacted ASUS UK who's only suggestion was return for repair (at quite a high MINIMUM cost).
Instead, I've obtained a new dock from the USA - probably cheaper than a repair.
I've also managed to obtain new connectors and will attempt my own repair.

Where did you get a new dock connector? I was looking around and couldn't find a replacement part.
I'm not 100% certain until they arrive, but I think the connectors are made by TE connectivity, either part number 2129260-2 or 2129273-1
I have ordered mine from Mouser Electronics
uk.mouser.com/ProductDetail/TE-Connectivity/2129276-1/?qs=UlfnwZ2x8nSgxOi2zKjuCA%3d%3d
There is a Data Sheet available from this page that provides information on the range.

if its been less than 90 days since purchase, I think you can buy a squaretrade warranty ...check out the site or call and ask them what the policy is.
Read through this thread it will give you a better grasp on them:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1471404&highlight=squaretrade
Try http://www.asusparts.eu/index.php?cPath=222155_222535
not exactly sure what the part number would be .. you might have to take yours apart to find that out first
how did you do that?
How did it happen? Is there a way to say how it happened that's not far from the truth but sounds a little more in your favor? Something like : I was having difficulty connecting the power supply since I got it and thought it wasn Edit: wasn't right and now it looks like this and won't work anymore?
I'd also change the pic to a little farther away. While it's good for us it looks bad on your part showing it that close up to Asus. Don't know but maybe they would have you send a pic before you send the tab to determine if it is covered.
I think I would just act like I don't know exactly how it happened and see what they say. I think they would cover it because it is so new.
I made a request about a week ago on the Asus site but they were way too slow to respond so I called them up yesterday. I had a very helpful guy on the phone talking to me who was asking me all the questions. I told him that I am super careful with this thing and gadgets in general. (Never lost a phone, or even broken one. Same with all my computers/mp3 players and so on) I had a case and screen protector ordered even before I bought my Prime. I told him the cable must have been crappy and it totally screwed up the inside connector. He put me on hold after I gave him my whole spiel and came back with a RMA number and instructions/e-mails to be sent out for service. I am posting on here to see if anyone had a similar experience and also to see if this would be covered. I read in the e-mail that physical damage is not covered. But if the cord is faulty and caused this then it would be covered right? And since I was given RMA authorization does that mean I'm in the clear? Or am I sending it away for 3 weeks for them to just say tough break sucka, we don't cover that.
It's possible it could be covered but best believe they will check to see if this was user induced damage(U.I.D). If they don't cover it and you're within 90 days of purchase, just buy the squaretrade warranty that covers physical damage. It'll be cheaper than paying Asus to fix it if they decide not to cover it. I seriously doubt someone would intentionally break the only source of power for the device but Asus could see it as user caused damage by not handling the plug Right.
Your story makes me Leary now of constantly using the prime while plugged up. I don't want to stress the 40pin connector to break like yours did.
Good luck! Remwber square trade of you within that 90 day window and if Asus denies you coverage.

Aren't these pictures of an original TF-101, rather than a Prime? The design of the back cover is a bit of a give away.

Lol, what? TF101 is thick and brown, doesn't have tapered edges like the Prime. That's a Champagne Gold tapered edge slightly covered up by a Skinomi carbon-fiber skin.
Anyway, that sucks. Wouldn't the part itself be interchangeable with TF101 counterpart? Or would they maybe be routed differently? Didn't look at the linked parts, is that what they were?

Yeah, it also is too abrasive of a surface. Protects the Prime and all, but be careful with expensive wooden tables, and it's rubbing the fake leather off my minisuit case. I actually just took it off the keyboard so it's only on the Prime now. Once I tire of it altogether, I think I'm just going to put Skinomi's clear cover on the entire thing; keep it protected and pretty

LMFAO at this. =)
As far as CID, the guy could have given you an RMA number just to get rid of you. I hate to be so blunt about it but you MAY have a fight on your hands with this one. They MAY tell you since its CID you have to pay shipping both ways, now I am not saying that it IS CID but they may claim it to be.
I wish ya the best of luck with it and let us know how it goes.

Something to look into before you send it off. I was looking for a new credit card yesterday and I noticed that bank of america and amex and maybe other cards offer a shopping service where:
Within 90 days, if your item is stolen or damaged, they will cover it 100%.
bottom line: CALL YOUR CREDIT CARD COMPANY to see if they'll cover it, if Asus tries to charge you for it.
From other people's stories, they may just call it customer induced damage (CID) and try to charge you for it.
Good luck though!

[Q] Reputable digitizer dealer?

I had my digitizer replaced a month before warranty was over and 3 months later it started acting up again (I guess im too rough with my phones). I had dropped it a few times without cracking the screen but it has dead spots in multiple parts of the screen, no matter what way i view it.
I have not installed any custom roms or partitioned the drive. I opened it up and re-seated the digitizer cable but i didn't have any luck.
I checked Amazon for a new digitizer but all i see is negative reviews and I have emailed some ebay buyers who were unhappy about their purchase (after already leaving feedback).
Does any one know of any reputable companies where i could buy a new digitizer? Preferably in North America for faster shipping.

I only know of one not reputable company that I try to steer people from. Repairuniverse.com horrible customer service, no phone support, tried to make me feel I broke their defective screen, slow shipping even if you pay for expedited, and only after threatening with contacting the BBB did they finally send me my RMA and replace my part.

That’s the kind of thing I’m trying to avoid. I know defective parts are inevitable, quality control can’t be perfect for everything.
Im sure we have some users here who have purchased digitizers that worked out ok.
I have purchased around 30 digitizers for atrix's, I prefer to buy the digitizer and the frame in one piece and I have found that your best chance of getting a working digitizer that is actual gorilla glass is to buy the refurbished ones, or original oem atrix digitizers, you will find them on ebay currently the only supplier is in london and he is selling 3 different qualitys "A", "B', and "C" with the difference being amount of scratches...but I see different people show up selling the oem ones on occasion.
Sadly a couple of the websites I used to purchase from no longer stock, or I received defective products, or they only sell to commercial entities which won't help you or they charge insane amounts for shipping from hong kong.
ymmv.

Replacement USB flap

Hi all, I got a good deal on a used z3v(came from nexus 6 just wasn't feeling it much) I love this phone but I have a question the person I bought it from had removed the micro SD and USB flap that makes the phone waterproof (hence the reason I got such a good deal ). My question is where do I buy a replacement I see a replacement flap for the normal z3 on ebay, will it fit the z3v? Or with this phone being so similar to the z2 would i need to order one for that one?
Whoa whoa, that's an awfully terrible thing someone would do to this phone. Removing the flaps is like saying "please let me drive my car without tires and see how this will work".
You would have to get Sony to repair your phone for you because the phone is sealed tight, preventing you from physically modifying it of the sorts.

If they are the Z3V Variant then yes those will work. Any other Z2 or Z3 flaps that are not Verizon will not work.
That sucks since even cases for the Verizon variation is hard to find, oh well still a nice phone and I paid next to nothing for it so no worries as even when I had my s5 I never dunked it in water anyways. Thanks for the advice

I would be real careful with it though. Anything intruding into your phone can easily ruin it. It looks to me there's next to no protection for anything to enter without the flap. You should get a case that at least covers the exposed areas somehow.
How is that different from any other phone without protective covers on the USB? Not being a smart ass just asking. I have a otterbox defender but annoyingly it doesn't cover the flap area

If you look through the side where the micro usb port is, you can see the holes to see the internal where the display lights up. I feel as though dust can easily ruin the quality of the display or ruin the camera lens in the phone from taking great quality pictures.
I got one on ebay. Should be here tomorrow. Shipping was slow but it said it's the original part. Sony would not send me one. Depending on how it goes and how difficult it is, if you want to of course..... make a small guide on how to put on those flaps. That might be helpful for some users in the future. Just throwing out an idea.

That's a great suggestion. I don't mind at all and would like to share. From what I can tell in my research, the port is designed like the Z1 and should not be difficult to install.

Actually, upon further inspection, I'm positive there's a difference. I found a couple European sites offering Z3V parts, expressly labeled as Black or Silver. Before anyone gets too excited though, none of them have the USB covers in stock.

Seems unlikely that the port cover would be different other than in color. Try chatting with Sony. I did that when I was trying to see if they would sell me the part and they were pretty helpful. I chatted right from my phone using Chrome browser.
My port cover didn't arrive today. So annoying. I'm in CT and the package left Brooklyn, NY at 5:46am on Saturday. It should've been delivered today. Damn 3rd class mail. I feel like I've gotten straight from China packages quicker.

Yeah, I just mean the exterior color. Still want it to be the most perfect though. The white definitely has a lighter silver trim, while the black has a darker, slate grayish silver.
Black and White comparison video
My port cover arrived and after about a half hour of failed attempts I figured out how to easily install it without damaging it.
Unfortunately, the damn thing won't fit. It looks perfect but it won't stay closed. I have to press it hard so it closes but it pops right back open on it's own. Nothing like the other ports. I've contacted the seller. Hopefully they will make it right.
I did learn how to install it and will post the video tomorrow. For now, here are two pix showing the ill-fitting cover.

Help! Shafted by Sony's incompetence and false waterproof claims!

Repair # 1-20162112859
My phone was left on the table while it was raining last week (flaps fully closed of course) and when I picked it up to check something after a while I saw it was turning itself off. After that it never came back alive no matter what I tried. I noticed the camera lenses had fully frosted up so it was apparent that water had seeped in somehow.
I dried the phone for over a day but it simply didn't work! I sent it to Sony for warranty repair as I expected it to be covered since I used it under their advertised conditions and you expect it to take a bit of rain at the minimum.
To my utter horror they have come back as saying that because the phone has some other physical damage on the other side (it has a very slight bend in the left side middle which i don't recall it having) it means that the warranty is automatically void and they don't even need to investigate the water damage or the reason why the waterproofing failed via faulty flaps! But the failed flap is the one on the opposite/right side where the SIM and memory card go! It doesn't even make sense!
I have attached the repair centre (SBE Ltd. UK) sent pictures as evidence.
I assure you that the 2 are completely unrelated and on the opposite sides of the phone. They are simply using cause and effect and not scientific tests to rub their hands off my claim. There are plenty threads online showing that Sony Z3 phones have been failing at waterproofing. Given Sony's dropping sales they should at least help out their customers and stick by their principles and marketing claims.
To top up the experience the rude customer service even charge me £20 to ship phone back! Extortion?
I was a staunch Sony fan who owned the Xperia S, Z, Z2 and Z3 but my Sony story is well and truly over! I will go to a small consumer court as I will not give up because I am right! can anyone in UK advise what are my rights and course of action?
More shocked than disappointed.
That doesn't look like a Z3v which this is the sub-forum for.
I also had and issue with the upper right/lower left corners developed a crack in the body of the phone, contacted Sony and they said "sorry warranty is voided, physical damage", phone has never been dropped, but I do carry it in my back pocket. Hasn't gotten water in it, but have not gotten it wet yet to see if water resistance integrity has been compromised.
Phones are too thin now-a-days and bend and flex way to easily. $.02
Lesson learned -- never buy thin phone again.

Odd isn't it? I mean, I have ordered products through eBay before and had a problem with that product and the manufacture had no problem accepting eBay receipt as proof of purchase and warrantied the product no questions asked, difference between a good company and Sony.
