Hi
I have the following problem. I dropped my Galaxy S3 into the water. After it got dried out, and cleaned several times, it turns on, and works more or less fine (the microfone is dead) for a few minutes (an hour tops) then it turns of without any logical reason. When it's turned on, it charges, but if I plug the charging cable in when it's turned off, a little yellow triangle appears with an exclamation mark in it. After several more cleanings, this problem still doesn't go away, and since in the S3 the charging panel is integrated with the mainboard, it seems I need a new mainboard. In the official Samsung store they said a ridiculously high price for the repairing, so I decided to do this at home. I found a brand new, unused mainboard on eBay(here), but they say it needs to be programmed (both IMEI and software) So my question is, is it something I can do at home, or it needs some special tools that only phone repairmans have? I can disassemble and assemble the phone, so I'm not afraid of that part, just I'm not sure if the programming part is possible without special tools. I found topics here where the repair of a hardbricked S3 is explained, just I'm not sure if that is the same as the programming of a clean mainboard.
Any help with this would be appriciated. Thanks.

As I said, it's a brand new, never used motherboard, it doesn't even have an IMEI number. And I don't want to use a fake one, I'd like to use the IMEI number of my absolutely legally purchased Galaxy S3. I found several topics about the IMEI number restore, so I'm not affraid of that one. I have my phone, it turns on, it works for a short time, the /efs is intact, so it can't be a problem to restore my old motherboard's IMEI to the new motherboard (by the way over the net motherboard and mainboard are both used).
But how did you mean it needs a very high knowledge of programming to program the motherboard? I thought the only thing I need is to somehow put bootloader and a recovery on the motherboard, and it doesn't actually needs any real programming work. I hoped it's something that possible somehow thru ODIN.
You are trying to amend the imei of the new motherboard, even if you consider this to be 'restoring' it's actually still illegal.
A new motherboard from a reputable source comes with it's own, original imei. I would suggest your ebay motherboard is not reputable.

Okay, but I said, IMEI isn't my main concern. Programming is. What is that mean in the case of a new motherboard? I doesn't have bootloader and recovery? Or it has, just there isn't an operational OS on it, so I simply have to flash one?
Imei should be your concern, as the one you are buying is either faulty or from a stolen handset, new motherboards are simply not manufactured with a blank emmc.

I don't know. But the seller has 100% positive feedback after more than 200 transactions. I tend to trust sellers with that reputation. They sold 16 of this motherboard, and they got no negative responses about it. It's the eBay, not some shady underground webshop.
I also think (but I have no knowledge about it, so I might as well can be wrong) it's possible that motherboards are manufactured with blank IMEI, since I don't think the IMEI number of the phone changes, when the official Samsung support changes the motherboard. That would make the phone look stolen, since the IMEI number is printed in the casing.

Nope. When motherboards are produced, it is programmed with one imei. As imei will NOT change, each phone has a certain imei.

It's funny, since with Galaxy S3 some new ROM flashings can overwrite IMEI. There are cases about it, even here on XDA. So it's absolutely possible to change the IMEI even unintentionally. I've seen cases over the net, where after the flashing a new ROM the IMEI is changed, or even got wiped out fully. It's not a coincidence they say to save the /efs, before doing anything with the ROM.
So can we just forget about the IMEI? What about this motherboard programming thing? What does that mean? They give it with absolutely no bootloader, no recovery? Or it has bootloader, can eneter download mode, just there isn't a fully operational Android on it yet, and I simply have to flash one with ODIN?

The reason is tat the efs got corrupted. Tats why the imei changed. And no one uses the imei tat is corrupted. Its impossible to use another imei apart from ur current one or corrupted one.

I don't know the answer on either of those questions. The only thing I know, there were 16 buyers who bought exactly the same motherboard I am considering buying, from the exactly the same seller, and neither of those gave negative feedback. To me it means the motherboards proved to be fully functional after building them into the phones, so there must be some way to make this work. The only thing I don't understand that how they mean its software needs to be programmed. An until I don't know more of it, I don't dare to buy it, because if it was something I can't do at home, and I need to pay to someone to do it, I might as well can pay for the official Samsung support for an official motherboard replace.

Okay, I will, but right now it seems my phone came alive. Two days ago I turned it on, and it works flawlessly (except the microphone, which is still dead). I'm not sure if it stays this way, but as long as it doesn't go crazy again, I put the motherboard replacement thing aside. Now I just have to figure it out if I can replace the microphone, or I'll have to use it with headset from now on.

So I flashed my S II to jelly bean 4.1, after installing the ROM it gave me a error saying "USB storage is damaged would you like to format it" I didnt think before clicking, so I pressed "OK". After clicking ok, my phone froze, I then restarted my phone and ofcourse it didn't boot. I then installed a stock 4.0.3 ROM. After that processes I botted my phone and then i checked my imei number, it said "00499901064****". This is clearly wrong. So I was wondering, is there any way to change the imei number? I know this is illegal. I almost have no choice but to do that. I tried the following:
SGII_Repair
Android Terminal Emulator
Any tips?
Questions belong to Q&A!
Well, you should have done a backup of efs before flashing. No, everyone should do a efs backup the first time you touches your device. Now only taking to customer service can repair it.

I tried GSII repair, didn't fix the problem. At first I didn't have ANY IMEI number at all. But after running the app I got a fake IMEI number. Which gave me signal on my phone, but no internet connection or sending/receiving call and message...
In that case you have two options. One, repair by Samsung/authorised repairer at your cost, obviously. This is the most expensive option. Two, contact a member on here called Odia by PM (and be patient when you do/wait for his reply. If you hound him, he'll probably ignore you), he can sometimes recover EFS/IMEI details for a small 'donation'. Trust me, if he can fix this for you it will end up being much cheaper than having Samsung fix it.
You don't have any other options given you don't have an EFS backup, and please don't mention changing your IMEI again, as you've already said this is illegal & mods will close this thread fairly quickly if you do mention it again.

Yes, I've heard that he fixes IMEI, but I can't trust this user. I know exactly what he uses to fix the IMEI. It also depends how much it costs to repair the phone from samsung service. Either I get a decent price, or I will buy a new phone. But the phone is still on warranty though, will it cover the phone with a different IMEI?

why do u want to create two thread's in no time for the same issue
ps- u should have edited the OP of the earlier thread with the same detail
Put it this way, the chances of EFS/IMEI getting borked by an 'ordinary' user (who hasn't messed with the phone/rooted/flashed custom roms) is maybe 1 in 100,000 (probably more), so if they're smart, they're going to know you've been messing with it. So there's a fair chance they won't fix it under warranty I would have thought.
You're going to have to go back to stock firmware if you haven't already, reset the flash counter with Triangle Away or a jig (depending on what bootloader you're running) & send it in & see what they say. You might get lucky & they might not care or notice you messed with it.
Nobody here can tell you for certain/give you any guarantees about this tho, anyone who does tell you they'll definitely 100% fix it under warranty is lying to you.

Well, I can least write better than you. And by the way, S/N and IMEI is not the same thing. Without the S/N the warranty will not cover the phone. Thats why I made this thread...
I have a gs2 i9100 wich had the mainboard replaced at a gsm service center few months ago. All working well.
Problem is i have generic imei. 004999010640000
The phone works great with aosp rom but not so great with original firmware.
I mean ... with original firmware i'm missing pin unlock, lockscreen and it looses signal sometimes.
The guy at the gsm repair center said that he cant mess with imei due to legal motives.
I allready tried everything on the forum.
The efs folder is there, it has all files in it, wifi and BT work just fine.
My guess is that this is a blank mainboard with no allocated imei. He said he got it from Samsung. He knows someone there.
Can something be done to revert it so that i can use original firmware the way it's supposed to work?
Thank you for you time and please excuse the bad english.
Nobody? Any ideas? Any thoughts?
.
Come on. Someone has to have an idea about this.
Nothing you can do to fix it without an EFS backup. Only Samsung/authorised service centre can. And talk of anything 'dodgy' will see the thread closed, so be careful.
I see. Well if nothing can be done without paing the price of a new phone is it safe for me to use the phone as it is?
Thank you.

Afaik the device has no warranty stickers inside. If the shop has not botched, you should be able to flash stock and claim warranty.
Note 2 things:
- in many countries in the first period (eg 6months) the shop has to prove you caused the defect through rooting.
- The seller and not Samsung has to provide the warranty.

Perhaps I'm missing something? People have offered solutions, you say they don't work, yet you want more solutions.
As said previously - if it's hardware related no amount of trying to fix with software will work.
If it is software try all solutions offered.
If that fails, buy a new one!

Hello i own a SGS2 for about a year and it suddenly does not work anymore after i put out the battery while it crashed
i did not try 2 flash this phone or anything ever
it wont go to recovery mode or download mode
and wont turn on
its a dead body
i tried 2 use jig and it doesnt respond to it
my question is, should i try to replace its motherboard?
i mean is there a chance this will work?
or should i just take it to repair centre for jtag or whatever they would do there..?
the thing is the repair centre are asking for 200$
while i can buy and replace the mother board myself for about 10$
so what do u suggust?
btw it acts like hard brick, wont even show the screen when charging the phone
and the camera is getting hot when i do that
If you're confident enough to do it, yeah, replace it yourself. Or if you're not, you could always get buy the secondhand motherboard & pay a local mobile repair shop to swap it out for the dead one in your phone. Will still work out way cheaper than the $200 you've been quoted by service centre.
If you're going to do it yourself, there's a thread somewhere on here with the service manuals linked/attached (by TheUnderling, search his posts/threads. You could probably find them with a Google search as well).
If you replace the motherboard with a 2nd hand one, you'll get the IMEI that was attached to the phone the board came from, if the service centre does it you normally keep your IMEI (Which shouldn't be a problem, but obviously with some carriers/networks in some parts of the world it might be).
sure you can
let me know when you find a motherboard for 10 bucks, i'll buy 10...
prices a quite higher for motherboards ( 50-150 $)
check well next time

i can definetly do it on my own
the thing is, can i be certain this will fix the problem?
if not what is the probability?
also the motherboard i found is this
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Samsung-I99...743?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a2a3950cf
its 90$ i was mistaken about the 10$ one
but i can still save some money here
Unless you're experienced with phone components/microelectronics, no, you have no way of knowing absolutely that replacing the motherboard will fix your problem. And that you asked this question makes it fairly obvious you don't have this experience. However, given what you've described & given similar examples on here over the past 18 mths, it is more than likely a component on the motherboard that has crapped itself.
You're looking for certainty, nobody can give you that without someone experienced opening up your phone & testing it.
If it were me, I'd get a 2nd hand board & pay somebody who knows what they're doing to swap the old one out. This would still be much cheaper than paying Samsung/an authorised repairer to put a new board in.
Are you 100% sure that the motherboard is the problem ? You said you didnt flashed the phone or anything , while the hard brick appears when you do a wipe from recovery on a faulty 4.0.4 version of android. Try using another battery , maybe it is dead. Dont rush for the motherboard change , and like Mistah said , go to a center and let them just check your phone pice by pice and then see whats the deal.

the repair centre said that something on the hardware is burned i think something to do with the flashing
and yes i did not play with the flashing of this phone ever, i was satisfied with its current rom
Then i guess it just happend , god knows why. Sadly for you , you need to indeed changes the motherboard , think at it like this , if its fried anywayz go ahead and try to change it yourself , if it works , good for you , if not , take it to a center and thats it. Its not like if you try to changed it and fail , that second , working mobo cant be reused by those guys at the repair center to do it for you.

If ebay failed you , you could try buying a phone with its screen broken and use its motherboard.I really dont know where to buy one , sorry.
I successfully rooted my phone and successfully installed the volume hack package and the battery fox for 4.0.4 (both I found how to do on this website) and for a good few months my phone was working fine on Android 4.0.4
Then one day I was replying to a text message the phone just switched itself off and wouldn't get past the boot screen where it comes up with the Samsung Galaxy S III logo. With no one offering me any help when I've posted about this problem on this site and various others and after searching google for days to find a fix as I am a Mac user (Heimdall) with no access to a PC (Odin) at all, I took it to a local phone shop, explained the problem to see if they'd be able to fix it. They had it for 2 weeks and when I went to collect they told me that the phone ended up having to be sent to Samsung and there was nothing they could do with it. (I figured that anyway as it was rooted). Now I have got the phone back, it's in a worse state than what it was when I took it into the shop. When I try to power on the phone, nothing happens at all, it's just a black screen. I assumed the battery might be flat so when I went to plug in the charger, the battery symbol shows but it's got a circle in the middle of it it as though it's loading but nothing else happens.
Does this mean my phone is completely dead for good with no fix at all?
If it's bin fodder I may as well sell it for parts and try to get a bit of money back out of it as I bought this SIM free and it cost me quite a bit back when it first came out.
I'd appreciate it if I didn't get a load of snotty remarks as though I'm the thickest person on earth! I am fairly new to all this and it's all I ever seem to experience from this website. Please only reply if you have a genuine answer to my problem.
Thank you.
:good:

Thank you for that, I'd never heard the term SDS (Sudden Death Syndrome) before. I didn't even know it existed! But anyway since you mentioned that, I did a search, found this link http://www.freesamsungrepairs.com and I called the number, they reckon they can fix it free of charge providing there's no physical or water damage (which there isn't) and all I have to pay is the postage fees! Sounds like there maybe some hope after all!
