[Q] HELP my Galaxy S3 is dead! - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I successfully rooted my phone and successfully installed the volume hack package and the battery fox for 4.0.4 (both I found how to do on this website) and for a good few months my phone was working fine on Android 4.0.4
Then one day I was replying to a text message the phone just switched itself off and wouldn't get past the boot screen where it comes up with the Samsung Galaxy S III logo. With no one offering me any help when I've posted about this problem on this site and various others and after searching google for days to find a fix as I am a Mac user (Heimdall) with no access to a PC (Odin) at all, I took it to a local phone shop, explained the problem to see if they'd be able to fix it. They had it for 2 weeks and when I went to collect they told me that the phone ended up having to be sent to Samsung and there was nothing they could do with it. (I figured that anyway as it was rooted). Now I have got the phone back, it's in a worse state than what it was when I took it into the shop. When I try to power on the phone, nothing happens at all, it's just a black screen. I assumed the battery might be flat so when I went to plug in the charger, the battery symbol shows but it's got a circle in the middle of it it as though it's loading but nothing else happens.
Does this mean my phone is completely dead for good with no fix at all?
If it's bin fodder I may as well sell it for parts and try to get a bit of money back out of it as I bought this SIM free and it cost me quite a bit back when it first came out.
I'd appreciate it if I didn't get a load of snotty remarks as though I'm the thickest person on earth! I am fairly new to all this and it's all I ever seem to experience from this website. Please only reply if you have a genuine answer to my problem.
Thank you.
:good:

Thank you for that, I'd never heard the term SDS (Sudden Death Syndrome) before. I didn't even know it existed! But anyway since you mentioned that, I did a search, found this link http://www.freesamsungrepairs.com and I called the number, they reckon they can fix it free of charge providing there's no physical or water damage (which there isn't) and all I have to pay is the postage fees! Sounds like there maybe some hope after all!

[Q] Is my SG S2 Dead?

Hi
I installed the MIUI rom on my S2,and to cut a long story short i decided to change to another rom, due to the camcorder not working and the phone getting very hot.
I thought i would follow this guide theandroidsoul.com/how-to-install-android-2-3-2-on-samsung-galaxy-s-leaked-rom
I thought it looked nice an easy.
I followed the guide to the letter, and now my phone is dead.
It doesn't matter what button combo i try the phone wont switch on at all it is completely dead, the 3 button press, vol. down + Home + Power.
Volume UP or Down + power, the power button by itself, nothing will bring it back to life.
The battery at the time had 98% charge in it when it died.
The phone wont even show on the pc,nor will it charge through the pc or wall charger.
Is there anything i can do? Or is the phone dead?
I eagerly await your replies.

You may need a jig to kick it into download mode.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
Will that actually work mate?
George
This is because you have installed a Galaxy S ROM on a Galaxy SII. How you did not realize this is beyond me. Anyway, the only thing you can do is to order a USB Jig and see if that will put it into download mode. Otherwise, your phone is dead.
EDIT: To answer your question "Will that actually work", I don't think we can say for sure. I give it a 40% chance of working.

If a jig won't work will a samsung service centre get it working?
George
Well samsung service center will get it working since they have all the necessary tools to jtag it. You could make one too if you are well versed with hardware, just search it up. Anyways samsung service center might find out about the custom roms on your device so you will have to pay to get it repaired.
Yeah i know mate, I'm not bothered about paying for service center repair.
Anyone know how much Samsung take for JTagging a phone?(Is that the correct term?)
I will try the USB jig method first,I'll order one from the bay.
Many thanks for your help guys.
George
Right guys i had a look on ebay for the USB jig,and one guy says this in the item description:
"If your phone screen is always black, that is it does not
display the white Galaxy S/Samsung/AT&T logo
when you switch it on, then sorry, this jig will not help you."
Does that mean the jig wont work for my problem?
George
You shouldn't be installing a Galaxy S 1 rom on your SGS2..
doubt the "rom" flash killed it , what killed it probably was flashing the i9000 pit file.. meaning the jig wont help u at all, you need a jtag now.. build your own (hard) or Samsung service centre.
Yeah i know that now mate....It's an expensive painful lesson. It wont happen again.
George
Any guides on how to jtag bud,is it easy
Worst case scenario is the service center...Do you know how much samsung charge for this,is it very expensive?
Much obliged.

uhm i have no idea, ive only ever seen videos of the jtag, have no idea how you would even begin to build one... its like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zN7le4GmxZs
Honestly!! id call samsung and pretend that i was updating my fw through kies and that happened, if you actually admit you were messing around in odin they will likely void your warranty and charge you.. Before anything else, call samsung first id say. much easier method than the jtag stuff.
I'm not the original owner of the phone mate,so a claim on warranty is out the window.
I don't mind paying for the service, after seeing how hard the Jtag thing is
I actually found that video that you linked too, after watching it i would say it's not a DIY job,not for me anyway.
The company in the video offers a JTag service for 75 bucks, just under £50,have you or anyone else heard of them before, would anyone recommend them, are they reliable,i would be grateful if anyone could advise me on using this service.
Cheers

hmm, nah ive never really heard of them, id say just try to google the company and see if they are any good... the comments on the video seem pretty happy..\ then again, comments are just comments. Wonder how much Samsung would charge for the repair (seeing as you said you cant claim warranty, maybe they can repair for you) as it would be better than trusting some random third party.

hi there i had the same problem i flashed i9100 with i9000 pit and i got hard brick like you. I call to the service center and it would come about 100€. Then i found for mobiletechguy.com i send them the phone about ten days ago and in about 2 days ago i got their email that is completed and that they send the phone back to me, will see in about 2 or 3 days when i got it back.

Think my S3 is hard bricked, what do?

Hi guys, my phone is flashed so I guess that will make this whole process painful...
But here is the story, I have omega version 12.1 I think (maybe 11 or 13) it has been on my phone for 1 + months now, so I am fairly certain it isn't anything to do with firmware. Phone wont turn on, wont go into download mode or anything. I have tried taking the battery out and leaving it out for 5 minutes, still nothing.
It was working fine before I went to bed, had 10 percent battery and was just on home screen when I put it on charge, not in app or anything. Then seems to be hard bricked after waking up, so happened sometime overnight.
I am not with a carrier, brought it locally outright at my local consumers electronics store (JB-HI-FI)
Since it is hard bricked to the point it wont turn on in download mode does that mean there is no way for them to know it is flashed unless they fix it (in which all is ok)?
Never done a warranty return, do I just take it into store and they send it off? How long will this take?
On top of all this I cut my old sim doown using a cutting template, and it appeared to slide in fine, but after trying to remove it today the push eject isn't working, and tips to get this out, doesn't appear to be enough room to grip it with tweesers.
Thanks.
So as we keep on saying in all posts, the next step u have to make is try with an usb jig.
U know what is that?

Since it's already harbricked, i'd say just turn it in and let Samsung fix it for you. It is under warranty, and last time i brought in my i9000 that I bricked, they just replaced the phone. the jig is ok only if you already know where to get one or how to make one, but if you have to go out of your way for it, just use the warranty.

Ok, Think that is best, can't really go without phone for 2-3 weeks while waiting for a JIG to arrive.
Just a few questions about the service centre, do you think they will ask me if I have flashed the phone? Cause I'm afraid they will think the brick was caused by that (could be) but probably unlikely since it died during the night a month after its latest flash.
If they do get it working will they go in and check the flash counter? Then what happens?
And lastly, if they ask me if I have flashed it should I lie and say no?
Thanks for the help.
I ordered my jig from ebay from overseas but it arrived in a few days.
I am in Melbourne city btw, pm me if you are too. I can lend you mine.

Nope brisbane here, thanks for the offer though. What would the chances be of a JIG fixing it though, cause I have a feeling the mainboard has died. Kinda wish I didn't turn off the red LED charging light, apparently some others who's phones hardbricked the light still turned on showing some sign of life.
Any suggestions on sorting out the micro sim card issue now, assume I have to get it our before taking it to service centre, or just leave it in for them to fix?

-it will force the S3 in download mode
BUT
-it will not reset the flash counter like with S2
Got a little bit of good news, this might help other people out with jammed sim cards, NO damage and worked like a treat.
In the top of the sim card holder down the bottom left there is a little circle around one mill wide, got a sharp thumbtack and pushed it gentelly into the sim card, the just applied a little pressure and the sim card started to slide up, was very easy, had a great grip on the sim cad and no damage done trying to grab it with needle nose pliers like I read elsewhere, now to get the phone replaced or unbricked.
Thinking about it more I think it is a hardware fault, cause I had flashed the correct version of omega for international S3, I havn't had any wrong signs like freezing or crashing, been working flawlessly for over a month, then out of the blue completely dead. So I think I will just go into the service centre and tell them I suspect the motherboard has died, or the charger port (didn't charge over night), dont have a spare battery to test with though).

That video is pretty cool, don't have an old connector to try it, but seeing as my phone didn't hard brick from a flash going wrong while flashing or wrong firmware or anything I have a feeling a JIG or similar wont work. Would try it if I had the connector though.
How often do batterys and charger ports fail, cause that could be another reason I guess.

Exactly. There were no problems with the flashing part, i think ypu have a hardware issue.
They didn't ask me anything really, just asked what happened prior to the phone dying.
But i was ready to lie my ass off.. lol!
Dont say anything about flashing. They wont even bother trying to flash the phone if they dont get it into download mode.

Ok, thanks for the info, I've tried everything besides a JIG to try get it into a download mode, so I doubt they will get it into download mode, Ive seen a couple of other cases where the S3 has had a mainboard issue, only other thing is in the last week I have been using the wall charger where as I normally use the computer and usb, so not sure if this could link to it though, might have got a power surge, but had no storms in months so unlikely and the fuse box is modern with pretty good protection. Ill just go in and tell them it was working one night, and dead when I woke up the next morning, which is the truth. And if they ask if its flashed, ill miss understand them and say, not the screen wasn't flashing/flickering when it died, I was asleep
Reality is though if they get the phone to a restored point to where they can see the flash counter, then I no longer need their help to fix it.
One more question. At the service centres do they try fix it while I'm there, or do they tell s to come back in a few hours, or do they ring a few days later. And if they can't get it in download mode do they normally give you a replacement there? Or do they ship it off to get parts replaced and then ship it back taking weeks/months?
Thanks
I'd give the jig a chance. Just imho.
Btw it is very likely that the jig would arrive in, like, 24-48 hours if you choose the right seller, while other users already told you it's probably gonna take more then a few days (probably from 2 weeks to a month) for samsung to "close the ticket". In my experience only with apple you'd be up and running in less then a week.

I have the same issue so thought i would post here rather than starting a new thread.
Here's the story for mine. Working fine on current rom for about a month no issues at all. Today battery got to about 9% then switched off and i haven't been able to get it to turn on again, no download mode,no recovery, no charging led nothing at all.
I had to change my screen a couple of days ago, has been working fine with the broken screen for months, have i now voided my warranty?
A lot of faulty s3 i think... My s3 suddenly died last night. Battery is around 90+. Check the phone and it's not responding. Power button doesn't work. Doesn't even go to download mode or recovery mode. I'm running on stock ICS with root only. Sad part is I don't have any access for a jig right now. So can't test it. Bought this phone in SG and I'm in the Philippines right now. Warranty is good for SG only. Dec would be my next trip back to SG. By then no S3 as of now. For a phone I'm getting depressed LOL!
over the air jellybean brick my phone unrooted unflashed phone
BEWARE EVERYONE!! when updating to jellybean some do go very wrong! not all! but some do!! and it will brick your phone!! i updated over the air.. and for a few days. my phone kept on freezing! and locking up! one night i went to bed woke up and the phone was stuck on the boot screen! i thought thats weird took battery out, put back in, as ya do.. nothing took sim out and back in nothing... so only option was to reapair it through kies. put serial in and model number in it found the sortware. i downloaded it. told me to put phone in recovery mode.. so i did, kies said it was gonna install it to my phone.. but everytime it tryed to install it kept on saying it couldnt find my phone.. i tryed this all day long used different usb ports. different computers. to know avail, so my only option was to take it in for repair.. so i took it back to phones 4 u! they sent it away, i waited over 2 weeks! which was undiscrible it was like i lost my right arm with no phone! as you can imagine.. than the repair center turned round and said that the phone has been rooted! which it hadnt!! and they said this in order to brake the terms and conditions of my warentee so phones 4 u can get out of giving me a new handset. so they all save money!! i wouldnt do that to a 500 pound phone!! the phone does everything you could want from a phone! im launching a full investigation into this matter.. and have writen a formall complaint to phones 4 u headoffice, and will be contacting trading standards, ofcom, watchdog, and the ombudsman, and plaster it on all the forums ,social networking sights i can think of, to give them as much bad press as possible!! untill my problem is resolved and i will restore there name and clear it once they have done the right thing by me
I am afraid I can also report a bricked S3 here.
Rooted two weeks ago, but did not yet install a rom. Didn't Triangleaway yet aswell.
Same problem as described, I was browsing the net, and suddenly, screen went black (off). Could not get it powered on anymore. (nor in download/recovery mode)
So i brought it to the local telecom service center of my office, they could tell me the battery was fine and the buttons were working but they never saw one in this state.
So they are sending it to a samsung repair company.
This was two days ago, heard nothing yet, but I am very curious if I will get repaired or if I need to pay because of the rooting.
Will post the result if I know more.
Does anyone know if this problem also happens to people who did not root?

Help, suddenly completely dead SGS3 !!

Hi all,
So I just received an SGS3 from a colleague at work and it was completely dead. I can't even get into recovery or download modes. The incident happened when my friend had his alarm clock on, he stopped it, then went away and found the phone completely dead as it was already on charge. I tried charging the phone but it seems not responding to anything, and I see no lights whatsoever.
What could be the problem? I have another colleague at work that has an SGS3 as well, I'll replace batteries and see whether it's a battery problem or something else.

The thing is it was working just fine...it only happened after the alarm clock incident as I mentioned...strange :S Worse thing is that there's a lot of images and videos in the phone that hasn't been synced with dropbox, only some of them...i'm sure my friend will lose that
Sounds like your phone has fallen victim to S.D.S (sudden death syndrome). The eMMC firmware that shipped with the stock kernel seemed to cause uneven wear-leveling which meant the components failed far before their expected lifespan.
At this point, assuming you can't reach download mode, all you can do is send the phone to Samsung and get it repaired/replaced. Most Samsung repair centers seem to be aware of the issue.

JTAG won't be able to revive the phone since this is a hardware failure rather than just a brick caused by bad flashing or a damaged bootloader. The entire motherboard of the phone will have to be replaced by the service center, which will be free.
Alright thanks for the Info guys...as long as it's still on warranty then my friend won't have to worry

Just as a side-note, is your friend aware that the latest 4.1.2 builds coming from Samsung include a modified eMMC firmware in the kernel which supposedly remedies this problem. I'm personally running the XXELLA build which includes the fix. He may want to check out flashing one of these builds to prevent it happening again, if the phone doesn't come back with the latest firmware already

Well I don't think that my friend is aware of that as he's not that experienced..I'm more experienced than he is though since I've been into Android since the first galaxy We reside in Dubai and our CSC code is XSG...not sure if our service centers have the fixed 4.1.2 builds yet for the Middle East version. Do the service centers have different builds than those in Sammobile?
Anyways I just hope he gets a replacement unit rather than having the motherboard changed.

I live in New Zealand and we've only just received 4.1.1 from our carrier, the updates are horrendously slow. I flashed the unbranded United Kingdom stock ROM instead as they tend to get the updates straight from Samsung very quickly. It works just fine and it's all official.
Guess i'll just flash it for him via odin if his phone didn't come with the modified emmc 4.1.2
Btw, I'm having trouble replying to posts via my phone and the xda app I keep getting Request function reply topic does not exist !!!!!!
Man that was quick....the phone has been repaired in 1 day...they said it might take 3 business days...motherboard has been replaced.
Now what should I do to prevent this emmc from happening again? ?

Galaxy S2 does not boot at all...Bricked?

Hi, Hope i am in the correct forum,
i am using galaxy s2 i9100 and was running stock ICS rom+kernal, singapore ROM. No flashing was done, other than official OTA updates
I have encountered a rather strange problem. My phone was acting a bit strange before i did anything (Fast battery drains) , so i did a factory reset as recommended by samsung.
It seemed to solved the issue, then i decided to enable force GPU in developer options, and then my phone started acting up. It would not want to shut down (the lights of the keypad wont go off), and now it wont want to turn on
I have tried reinserting battery, letting it charge, but all i got was the camera part of the phone getting hot. Nothing else, no display, nothing
I cant even enter recovery/download mode (accessed by reinsert battery + Hold Vol buttons+Home + power button right?)
What can i do to resolve this? Strangely enough, I am running totally stock ROM and Kernal. I have no knowledge on how to use odin and all. I have no more warranty, so i can only ask for your help. Any help would be really appreciated

Where can i find a USB jig? Might be worth a shot
And personally i hate all apple products, and i never use their products before
I have been using android for nearly 2 years, except that i never dared to delve into root/flash as i did not want to void warranties.
There's a thread in General where people offer to lend their jigs to other people. Check; there might be someone near you who can help. Alternatively, search eBay (and probably elsewhere online) "Samsung Galaxy S2 jig". Costs a few dollars.
Re: the Apple thing, it's his sig. He didn't post "go back to your iPhone since you are an Android n00b".

Oh i see, i didnt know it was his sig...oops
Ok, I'll see if i can find/get my hands on a jig somewhere around...Just hoping to bring this expensive brick back to life....somehow
Actually, now that I look at it. I'm not sure it is his sig, per se. It seems to be a standard line he ads to his posts. Perhaps TheUnderling can clarify ?
Good luck. If the jig is no go, given your warranty isn't good, look for JTAG repairers. Do a Google search, or look here, or ask local mobile repair shops. If it ends up not being JTAG'able, as TheUnderling mentioned, you'll need a motherboard replacement. If you get to that point, you can either source one from a 'donor' phone (broken screen or whatever; search eBay), or you can pay Samsung/authorised repairer to replace it.

[Q] Hard Bricked S3 i9300

After Flashing Latest CM10.1 to my S3 and using it for a while, I wanted to go back to stock. I flashed stock 4.1.2, rooted it and installed CWM successfully. After a while I noticed that CWM can not mount internal SD card, or recover a nandroid backup from it. I thought it is a partition issue, so i have decided to flash GT-I9300_mx_20120220.pit to my S3 with re-paration checked. ODIN started the process, Pass appeared with green background. Since then, the device wont start in any mode. I tried every key combination with no luck. Tried to connect the device to pc, same result; device is dead. Pulling battery also did not work.Anything I can do to turn on the device in to download mode at least? Please help me. I am from Lebanon; here all the phones are sold with no warranty, so returning it to Samsung wont solve the problem? any solution? Thank you.
This may help

Honestly?
Without the ability to send it back to Samsung, i think you may be screwed
However, there may be a person on here that has had the same issue and managed to fix it (but i doubt it) - be a bit more patient and see if anyone else comes into the thread :good:

Hope so; you gave me a small hope. where is that guy?
Contact samsung and claim wareanty because of Sleep of Death.
What you mean it's sold without warranty, that goes against consumers right.
(that's your line right there)

90% of phones in Lebanon are sold through unauthorized sellers. If you want to buy it from Samsung agent here, you will end up paying $200 more. Bought my phone for $520, while it costs around $700 from authorized seller.
Is either that or a $200 + mobo replacement.
