I would also be interested in this. You can see that the stock software has a lot of apps installed that aren't visible from the Apps screen, and some of them are surely useless (like all the update services, parental controls etc.). So it would be nice if there was a list of what all of those apps are for and whether it's safe to remove them (and how to remove them in the first place).

like widgets? such as "apmobiles", seems to be a newspaper sort of thing i will never read. i also can't uninstall social/music/gaming/book hubs? i'm in the setting/applications/manage applications bit.
i want to basically delete a LOT of apps then only install what I need? i'm new to smartphones, moved from a nokia keypad phone. so the galaxy s2 was a massive jump for me.
Have a search for titanium backup and root. You'll need to root your phone 1st before you can 'freeze' but not remove apps.
The phone is brand new and it will take a while before custom roms that let you remove apps are available.
If I were you I'd wait before rooting as it is still a bit complicated and simpler methods will come along soon, I'm sure. I'd use the time to read the guides and get familiar with the phone.
Bear in mind that rooting/custom roms will lose you your warranty. Also, I'm not too worried about app removal as the phone has plenty of memory for my needs. Just remove the apps you don't want from the home screen and put on the ones that you do.
Edit: just wanted to clarify that I was referring to removing pre - installed apps.

Thanks for that, it's that I also noticed that there are services running in the background from applications that I'm not using, like I have the apmobile service running and also a social hub service running even neither is open. And I at least want to remove app shortcuts from the menu.
You'll need to root and freeze to remove the shortcut from the app drawer. I really wouldn't do that until you've read up and are confident though.
There are other threads about the social hub, have a search. I think you'll need to reset the phone and then not add any accounts if you want to stop it from being active.

To add-up about removing the widgets (probably you've found it already though), you only need to hold down the widget and slide it down to an area says remove
this phone comes with a built in task manager and a widget that shows you active tasks, i use the widget on my phone's desktop to close apps as needed ( i know the phone can handle it but its just my own thing lol ) and from there, there's a tab that lets you uninstall apps as well.
ofcourse you wont be able to uninstall those that came with the phone just yet.
I rooted mine which was dead easy and was my first time so you'll be fine. Download AntTek app manager from the market its free and lets you freeze, delete and backup any apps and widgets you want. You will no longer have any of those crap apps working in the background draining your battery. Hope this helps.
Edit: Oh yeah the built in task manager doesn't show system apps working in the background or at least not all so well worth freezing or removing them.
I'd like to remove Google Play Music. I have no need for it and I find it is automatically making itself an active app that I always have to kill after a reboot. I really don't care to have google spying on me at that level (yeah, I know it is hard to avoid) and suggesting music for me. I can do that very well for myself, thank you. So, I've rooted my phone, flashed the latest philz kernel, and installed busybox pro and titanium backup pro. If it is safe to kill that google app, which tool and what should I do to accomplish it? I see TB has bloatware melter, but I cannot find an adequate description or how-to for it.
Freeze it with Titanium. Personally speaking, I don't like to outright remove anything, freezing is a better option given it achieves the exact same result & without the 'oops I accidentally deleted an important system app by mistake' type incidents that can/do happen.
Alternatively if you do really want to remove it you can use SystemApp Remover.
Thanks for the helps. I chose to freeze it, because, being a noob, that is the cautious choice for me.
I have two questions:
1. For rarely used apps, is it better to freeze them with Titanium Backup, or uninstall them and only install them when needed?
For example, I have an electrical amperage calculator that I use every once in a rare while. When I'm working on a project where I need those calculations quickly, it's very handy to have an app for that. But there can be months at a time when I never open it. What is the best way to manage that app when it's not being used? What if it's a little bit of a bloaty or questionable developer app? (Potentially starting up on boot or something) - does this change my treatment of it?
2. I use (and love) Hyperdrive for my rom. In the installer, there are some apps like, Google Maps or Gmail, and file managers and things like that. What is the benefit to installing apps that can be installed via the Play store through the rom installer? My gut instinct would say that installing it via the rom leaves more possibility for there to be problems. If I install an app via the Play store, I can easily uninstall it. But apps are something that I see offered with quite a few roms. Why?

1. Well, if you have the space to spare then obviously freezing would be more convenient than having to go to the Play Store every time you want to re-install it... however I highly doubt that an app like that would run on boot or hog any resources while not in use, so why not just leave it there? Another option if you need space on your phone storage would be to do a backup of any apps you don't use (backups will save to the sd card) and simply restore them when needed. There are ways to find out what apps are hogging resources when not in use, but I don't know off hand so you'll have to do your own search for that info.
2. This is just a matter of convenience as well... the rom developer is simply making your life easier by including popular apps right off the bat saving you the hassle of going to the Play Store to install them one by one. If you feel more comfortable going to the Play Store anyway... well then do so. It's the same apps either way so there's really no difference.
Hello, i asked this question over at the Tab S6 but haven’t gotten any replies so I thought i would ask here since its a newer device.
I want to be able to uninstall apps that come pres-installed on the tab and would like a list, if possible, of apps that i can safely uninstall without affecting the tab itself. I would not be using a lot of the apps so i want to free up as much storage and ram as possible. That only thing I will be using the tab for is:
Lightroom, photoshop, snapseed, Facebook, instagram, Flipboard, youtube, firefox browser, file manager and Google play to download mentioned apps and keep them updated.
I would be using ADB to remove unwanted apps, i dont want to root my tab as i want to be able to perform future updates.
Thanks in advance.
Enable USB debugging.
check apps ids from app info , for an example "com.google.youtube"
wirte all of them on plain paper.
then
Use ADB with correct command.

Hi have a look at the S5e threads there is a list of apps to uninstall there
Is there any way in Google Play Store or Settings > Apps to determine if an app is pre-installed on Android?
Yes, you can just look at a specific application, if your device does not enable you to uninstall, it is a pre-installed device.
In a pre-installed device, you can only disable the application but can't uninstall it.
I hope you find it useful, and if I come across any applications, I will make sure to share them with you.

Well it's not as simple as that. You can always uninstall updates and revert back to the pre-installed (ROM) version.
I frequently have to uninstall Google and Google Maps to allow me to install updates to other apps because the calculation of the space required in Google Play Store and more so in Samsung's Galaxy Store is flawed. Once I have updated the the other apps, I update the Google apps to bring them up to date. I know that with those two apps I won't lose any data or settings as these are stored in the cloud of my Google account.
However, sometimes it is necessary to do something similar with other apps in order to update them but if they are not pre-installed and you uninstall them, you lose any configuration and settings when you reinstall. It would be nice to know in advance which apps are pre-installed and will therefore likely retain data and settings if you revert them and then update them.
As a side note, it always amazes me what is pre-installed in one phone and has become obsolete by the time that phone's successor comes along.
