This is probably a bug, but it's a really annoying bug and I'm curious if anyone is experiencing the same issue. Periodically if I'm in an app for an extended period of time (surfing Twitter, chatting on Facebook, etc), my phone will vibrate a few time (a short haptic-feedback-like vibration, but 5 or 6 of them in quick succession). Then the app will close and display the dark little "App Successfully Closed" box.
Anyone else having this problem? My guess is that the garbage collector is freeing up memory, but it's freeing up memory that I'm currently using. Super annoying...
That's not a force close, that's just your phone experiencing the "phantom button press." I've never been sure if that was rom related or phone related, considering I've experienced it on a number of different roms. Anyway, try a battery pull, that might work.
On CM7...under settings/applications/developement...there is an option...stop app via long-press...uncheck that...now holding back (or phantom press) wont close anything. Hope this helps.
Just remembered that I made this thread, because my phone was freaking out again today and closing apps. Oh how I need to sleep more...
I unchecked the "force close on back button" long-press option. I'm curious what would be causing this, either the kernel or ROM. My gut tells me kernel, but I have no idea. I'm not technically skilled enough (yet) to pour through kernel code to fix it.

reboot recovery and wipe cache and reboot, then run fix permission in term emu or boot back into recovery and run fix permission....I've never run miui but if you phone goes buzz........ Buzz..buzz..buzz that is a force close of something whether a message box pops up or not. it could be from a kernel issue...although I would think its something else like forgetting to wipe something in the initial flash or restoring Data or incompatible apps in titanium backup...did you restore via Ti-Bu?

I was experiencing that before this last time, after a cache/dalvik wipe, reinstall I haven't had it happen since. It was so aggravating too, as it was like MIUI was bragging about closing something I was using...
I've tried everything I can think of or find in this subject but I can't figure it out.
I'm getting FCs all over and seemingly randomly.
There's no one program doing it either.
I've used cyanogen 7 7/17 version with glitch kernel (both 11 and 12) and the v3 kernel. Maybe the stock but I don't remember.
Also flashed the dl09 or which ever radio was recommended for cm7 on the ROM list sticky.
Tried the nighties and am on not the recent one but the one right before it with stock and glitch 11 and 12. Also tried before and after v6 super charger which seemed to make my launcher before faster and without the stopped responding dialog.
I also use the ultimate kernel removing script between kernels.
Here's what I've already done to try to fix it:
Wipe big 3. fives it for awhile then starts up in force.
Wiped to stock 2 or 3 times. Still happens.
Fixed permissions. Works longest so far but still starts up again later.
Wipe cache and data in manage applications settings menu for creasing programs. Works for a while usually but then goes
back to crashing.
I followed ask instructions to install everything properly.
The only thing is that
do I need a special bootloader with nighties and stock kernel?
What am I missing here? It seems like it's related to wifi because I can keep things stable a little longer with wifi off but it is not always 100%. Definitely related to internet. Also seems like the cache reaches 2-3 megs when programs crash
browser seems to be more likely to crash. Will crash constantly and I'll open up Firefox or opera wends everything is peachy. I think neither ox those browsers crash from what I can tell.
Oh and could it be gapps somehow. I'm not sure but it might be a case built that all the crashing programs are gapps.
I've tried the new version 2.2.5 I think posted somewhere and the original 2.2.3 I think. I'm pretty sure they both crash.
I'm maybe to frustrated to see what's right in front of me and I maybe have forgotten an important detail so please forgive and I'll be happy to provide any info.
This is near perfect and that's the thing that's holding me back right now.
Anyone else have this happen to them? Any advise?

How did you originally come to cm7..ie. What was your previous rom and kernel prior to making the switch?
What steps did you take to get to
mtd format?
And lastly I read your whole OP but am still unsure if you've tried Odin'ing a stock VZW official rom to start from scratch? (ie. Eb01,dl09, or ed05)
Edit: Also did you restore any apps or system data via titanium backup?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I've come to cm7 at least twice from a stock froyo ROM. I followed the directions in the sticky exactly. At least twice.
I did restore titanium but not from non-mtd. I reinstalled every app one by one after upgrading.
I'm thinking it might be the wrong gapps. If browser is a part of gapps, I'd betting on it then. It seems the fc's might all be related to
the various gapps.
That's the only thing that I can think if that I haven't tried.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using xda premium
Here's the latest gapps.zip includes market...don't know if you've tried this oneand I don't think it contains anything for the browser, but i'm not sure...its for Mtd builds.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1191063
Edit: i'm also assuming you've ran fix permissions via cwm or terminal emulator right?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I'm making you assume a lot, sorry. Yeah. Did all that.
I'm trying to isolate it. I'm seeing that the force closings are maybe not so random.
It's the browser, google services framework and programs that I guess rely on browser. They are programs that access the http protocol. Reddit/f5, Chan browser etc. I've yet to have a program crash that was not accessing the internet like chuzzle.
Gmail does sometimes too.
Anyway, if they fc I go into manage applications and usually clear cache for the offending program Anne it works again until the cache gets up around 2 or 3 megs give or take.
I know people have been complaining about the data cutting in and out on this ROM so maybe that's involved.
I originally thought it was wifi because it seemed to only happen on wifi but i'm getting it on 3g but not as often.
I'm thinking that the data appears to be on but isn't and it's confusing programs but then there would be others with the problem. The other theory is that my cache space is fried.

In case someone finds this buried down here with the same issue, here's how I think I fixed it.
Wipe data again. Make sure you let the gapp installer install everything itself.
Titanium backup: restore missing apps (double check for went google apps) and data. Or hand install your apps and restore data.
I have the install location set to original.
That seemed to work even with the seeming wifi cut out and the whole thing.
I also didn't install Firefox or opera this time. That shouldn't be the problem but i'm recording it here anyway just in case.
Good luck

Hey all,
I've had my SGS2 since May 2011 and using VillainROM as it has developed. The weird thing over the last few months has been the phone gradually slows down, I don't have a massive amount of apps installed and nothing running that should cause a slow down. It slows to the point where response to screen selections takes a second or two and even the haptic feedback slows down now and again (so instead of a quick buzz it causes a long buzz and then the next one will be OK).
The one solution I've found is to Titanium backup all of the apps and data then wipe and re-install the ROM, restore all apps and data then it's fine. The fact that I'm backing up/restoring the apps and it still being OK is another reason I don't believe it's app related, the only thing that will have changed is the full wipe and re-install of the ROM. This then lasts a couple of months in a good state before slowly getting worse again.
While this is a sure-fire solution it's also a time consuming and annoying one. So has anyone got any ideas as to what I could do to resolve this issue without a wipe?
Thanks
Russ

What you could try is a wipe of dalvik and cache via recovery every so often see if that helps .
jje
I've been using VR3.0 and Ninphetamine 2.0.5 but I would expect these kinds of issues to be instantly apparent if it were related to either of those, not something that gradually gets worse?

And that wouldn't wipe any data? Truth be told I've never really known what they do but I wipe them before a re-install. I'll give it a go!
They just rebuild when you reboot .
Just tested it means reboot takes longer first run is all .

Cheers, I'll give it a go and see how I get on
I really hate to make this post, but I've had such bad luck in the recent days, that I'm at wits end and need a little help figuring out whats going wrong here. As of now, I am runing LiquidSmooth 2.9... But as with all my recent flashes, there are tons of problems. Currently my issues are: external SD card doesn't show, GPS doesn't lock on (which from what I read I need to install a working GPS rom, get a lock, then reflash.. ok cool) and lastly facebook and instagram are aggravatingly slow. I can have full service, even be on Wifi... text from posts will load fast... anything else... You're better off playing the lottery than hoping a quick picture will pull up.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong here, I throw the zip file on my phone, go into TWRP, wipe cache and dalvik, install, wipe again, factory reset, reboot, and then start using my phone...
With every rom I've tried there are issues from no gps, no camera, no keyboard, bluetooth cuts out... etc...
Is there a rom that works? Or are there steps I'm missing or a fix to my said issues? Any help would be great

Try flashing devil kernel from the Original Development section for your SD card woes. AOSP doesn't support exFAT by default (I'm guessing that's what your card is flashed as and is why you can't see it). This kernel adds support for exFAT to any AOSP ROM.
Try enabling Force GPU Rendering in the Development Options and see if that doesn't fix your slowness with Facebook and Instagram. I personally don't use Instagram but have had no issues with Facebook on CM10.2.
Finally, you already have the fix for your GPS issues, just need to bite the bullet and get it done. The good news is that as long as you stay on AOSP ROM's you shouldn't have to do it again.
Let me know if that does/doesn't work and we can try some different options, good luck!
Thank you the GPU thing seems to have worked, doesn't seem to lag as much anymore. However, the devil kernel didn't seem to do much other than replace TWRP
I'll take that back =S pics aren't loading again.

Devil kernel not recovery.
It is a kernel that will work on AOSP and TouchWiz ROMs, and in combination with the recovery allow you to dual boot one of each.
You do not want this, you want just the kernel.
ok so I've tired the devil kernel, no luck. I tried a couple different roms, no luck. Finally flashed with CleanRom3.5 and my SD card is back. But now the issue I'm experiencing is when I try and play music through spotify it randomly shuts down the audio channel. The music still plays according to the app, but I can't change songs. I can pause and hit play, but no audio. I have to force close the app, and I can then again listen to a song, maybe two before it happens again. Sometimes it happens within 2 minutes, either way I have not made through 2 consecutive songs. Any ideas on that?
try beans Jellybeans build 21.. no issues works great.
I have to be honest, I have had nothing but compatibility issues with the use of TWRP. I switched to CWM and I stopped having little glitches and hang ups in the Roms. I would give it a shot, not saying it is even the cure all but it worked for me as crazy as it sounds.

Maybe you should try goodness Noteworthy, might also get an update this weekend
My links should still be good, if not pm me and I'll point you in the right direction.
I have been experiencing a series of force closes. I am posting this to see if anyone else has experienced this, and whether anyone can suggest a fix. I'm pretty sure it was something I did, but I'm not sure what. I'm hoping that this can maybe narrow it down.
Device: SM-N900P
Firmware: OC5, stock, rooted, with several tweaks and modifications(detailed below).
The problem: I am getting several force closes. They only occur when I am trying to open certain settings. So, they aren't just popping up at random. They are slightly troubling, but not really problematic. Which is to say, aside from the actual force closes themselves, I don't really seem to be experiencing any major problems. Here are the FC's I am experiencing:
-Menu> Settings> General> Battery: This one results in a "Unfortunately, Settings has stopped" dialog box, and an immediate return to my home screen. So, I can't check out my battery usage. I'm not seeing any crazy battery drain. By opening Root Explorer and navigating to data> system> batterystats.bin, and deleting batterystats.bin, the problem is kind of fixed- I can open battery from the settings menu after that. But there is only battery level and state displayed, no usage information(just a message saying it is not available).
-Menu> Settings> General> Developer options> Process Stats: Results in the same dialog box, and the background turns black if I don't press "OK". I'm not even sure what this does, but after my Battery started force closing, I started checking the rest of the settings out.
-Menu> Settings> Connections> Data usage: Dialog box, immediate return to home screen.
The probable cause: hard to say, I've done a few things to it. Like I said, I was hoping that someone would be able to figure out what I've done from the following information about what I have done so far. So, here goes.
I was on NK4, running Priest Punch ROM. I reverted to stock and took the OTA about a week or so ago. I immediately rooted and installed TWRP using the method in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-3-sprint/general/how-to-root-note-3-lollipop-t3089382 .
After rooting, I didn't see a whole lot of OC5 development, so I started poking around to see what kinds of mods I could use. First thing I wanted to do was remove bloat. I started off using Root Explorer, then I happened upon this thread featuring a bloatware removal tool for the T-Mobile variant: http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-3-tmobile/development/tool-utility-sgn3-sm-n900x-bloat-t2813036 . It worked. I removed a bunch of apps, but nothing I wasn't sure I could safely remove(I had to check Google a few times). I did not notice any problems at this time.
Then I installed this mod to pump sound out of both speakers: http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-3-sprint/development/mod-sm-n900p-surround-sound-t2966042 . I did not notice any problems at this time.
Next, I decided I wanted more fonts, so uninstalled the preloaded fonts and pushed the apk from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2752379 . Again, no problems.
I decided that a working hotspot would be nice, so I used the method in this thread to get one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-sprint/general/lollipop-hotspot-root-flashing-t3048163 . I tested it and it worked. No problems.
I really wanted to silence my shutter sound, and I happened upon this Galaxy S4 thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2261789 . It worked, and there were no issues. This was my first exposure to csc codes. I found a similar thread for the s6( http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6-edge/general/quick-guide-enabling-hidden-features-t3087506 ), and followed the instructions. I was able to enable the camera during calls and enable call recording. No problems here. I tried a keyboard mod from the same thread, which had no effect at all(good or bad), so I reverted the code for that one back.
This is when I think I started to go off the rails a bit. I saw a thread for the Polish variant of the Note 3, N9005. http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...camera-mod-note-3-n9005-lollipop-5-0-t3067827 -it had a neat sounding mod designed to improve camera quality, remove recording time and snapshot restrictions, and make 60fps HD the default camcorder mode. It took a little trial and error to get it installed, but I was making backups of files I was messing with, and was able to quickly and easily reverse any missteps. Again, the mod works fine, and I have noticed no issues. So, I started looking at the dev's other work. Which led me to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-3/themes-apps/secsettings-mod-17-swipe-charging-t3046032 . I wanted some different unlock effects, and I wasn't really finding them, so I tried his mod out. It was a 3 step process: replace a SecSettings app, copy paste some .ogg files, and finally, copy paste a SustemUI .apk. The first two steps went fine, but the third resulted in a persisitent, repetitive dialog box. I forget what this dialog box said, but it popped up almost as soon as I could press "OK", and I had to restore the backup of SystemUI to make it usable again. Oddly enough, about half of the new unlock animations still worked fine, and I wasn't seeing any problems after that, so I left everything else there. I liked the unlock animations, and they didn't seem to be causing any problems after I restored the original systemUi .apk.
Let's see, what else might be relevant? I was using the built-in task killer quite a bit. I'm also using SetCPU. I have 2 profiles: Screen on, 1728 MHz max, 300 MHz min, governor ondemand. And Screen off, 1036 MHz max, 300 MHz min, governor interactive. And I have installed the Material Power Menu from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-materialpowermenu-reveal-animations-t3059169 .
I started to notice the battery FC last bight. So, I wiped the battery stats as outlined above. Noticed it again today, wiped stats again, and kept checking it. After about an hour, it was force closing again. That's when I started poking around and found the others.
I dunno if anything can be done about this, or if anyone might know what's wrong. And, like I said, Aside from these FC's I'm not experiencing any real problems. I'm a little worried that they may get worse, or turn into something more serious, but I can always restore a backup if that happens. But if there is some kind of fix for these issues, I would use it. Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to read this wall of text, and tale of irresponsible phonery.
These are all settings that monitor usage.... should that tell me anything? I have tried wiping cache and dalvik, but that only seems to fix battery usage and data usage very temporarily(like, for a minute or less). And it doesn't seem to have effect on Process Stats.
My thoughts:
Seeing as you have flashed a lot of mods, it could be anything. If it were me, I'd start the rom from scratch. Then for the first step, instead of removing apps, I'd freeze them with titanium backup and give that a day or two to check the stability.
If that works, I'd continue with the mods one by one, giving a day or so for stability checks.
If you'd rather not do all that, you could use a logcat to find the origin of the problems.

I'd probably try the logcat first. One, because I hate doing stuff over, and two, Ive neber done it before and it should be a learning experience. Is it complicated? I'm assuming there is a thread here on xda about it...

It's fairly straight forward. I did one to see why an app wasn't loading, didn't need instructions. But that was a fairly simple check, yours sounds more complicated. I'd do a bit of reading on it.

Will do. Thanks for your help!
Okay well I decided to re flash OC5 and start from scratch.
I took it back to stock and re rooted. Am now debloating....no isssues yet.
I have flashed everything except the Polish camera mod and the wallpapers. Having zero issues of any kind. I know it can take difficulties some time to manifest themselves, but I'm betting it is either the lock screen animations or the camera mod. Leaning towards the lock screen animations because it involves messing with system.ui...
Okay, made a new backup and flashed the camera mod. No issues. After every mod, I have been going back and checking for issues. This is all stil pretty new, but if everything is still fine after a couple of days, well, I will be convinced that it was the lock rings. Not surprising obviously that flashing stuff meant for foreign variants can wreck your sh*t, lol.
