I had to do this. Go to Walmart camera section. Buy yourself a sd card reader
for usb. I bought one that can read 6 different sd cards for 10 bucks. Now just
pop that puppy in the computer and move the files you
need to reflash into your recovery. Now put the sd card back in your
phone and reflash.

I'm a little confused...what's the fix? And why rooted only? You can have cwm or twrp or another custom recovery without being rooted, and your ext sd card slot doesn't require root? Is there supposed to be recovery files linked here or something? Either the op heading is a little misleading, or some details need to be added cause I'm Def a little confused...or is this just a post about sd card readers? Thanks

Let's consider what means 'root' - as you can read in Wkipedia:
Android rooting is the process of allowing users of smartphones, tablets, and other devices running the Android mobile operating system to attain privileged control (known as "root access") within Android's subsystem.
Rooting is often performed with the goal of overcoming limitations that carriers and hardware manufacturers put on some devices, resulting in the ability to alter or replace system applications and settings, run specialized apps that require administrator-level permissions, or perform other operations that are otherwise inaccessible to a normal Android user.

(Sorry for long quoting).
That means, without root you can only manage user apps and have not access to /system where are placed most interested things...
So aside of question if this method brings something really new, for successfull meddling in system apps root is a must! And fixing things in Android needs such meddling for sure

Yea I'm well aware of what root access is...I develop roms and kernels, themes and other mods ...my question is about the post...was there suppose to be root packs here or is this just literally about an sd card reader...As the the op is about a fix for all androids which does not exist as they all require different root access files and methods, and most devices other than samsung have no external sd... and response and op have almost no relation to one another? What was the point of the op is what I was asking, not for a quote about root? Thanks:silly:

Hi Guys,
Finally our tablet has been rooted, lets just list out the benefits of ROOT. My wishlist is as follows:
1. Ability to take screenshot.
2. Change fonts.
3. WhatsApp. (Success) CLICK HERE
4. Use Xperia Arc Timescape/Launcher, etc.
5. Moving game date to external SD card.
I can use AdFree t oget rid of all the stupid adds that takes cpu-power.
I can use Titanium Backup Pro and it's full power.
Root Explorer
I can get rid of stupid bloat-ware that is filling up precious storage-space.
Hopefully this can lead to maybe an unlocked bootloader to able recovery and custom-roms
To name a few things
Increase battery life with build.prop and sysctl.conf tweaks.

You can do this using Root Explorer.
Navigate to; system/ create a new folder called app.old.
Then navigate to system/app and pull all of the system apps that you don't want, move them into app.old folder you just made.
By doing that they are then uninstalled, freeing up valuable space. You could always copy them to your SDCARD then onto your PC, I wouldn't delete them as they may be needed again.
I'd like to post a "Tweak you Sony Tablet S" thread at some stage with a custom homescreen theme and system tweaks.
Yep, looking forward to getting rid of all the Sony junk off it!
Root's failed for me though, been on XDA for a while, but not got my 10 posts yet to report it in the dev forum!
I think we can now look for a way to use the microUSB port as micro HDMI. I read some where that it can be done if we have root access!

I hope to see some Custom ROMs !!!!
Do note, if ICS comes behind the corner tomorrow (not that it will, but whatever), I'll prefer that above root. For all Root has to offer right now. A good custom rom might turn me over ;p

Having root available changes the game.
If ICS OTA update removes the root (which is very likely to happen), then it will be possible to figure out manual update to ICS, which saves root rights.
I've seen it happenning on HTC View, where expoit was only available for GB, and then there was a way to update to HC and still have root rights. Not thru OTA though.

link2sd shows internal/external built in memories and does not look at the physical sd card - so I could not make it work. maybe someone will do an extra script to mount physical sd instead of built-in one and not as sdcard2 - I saw a post about it for rooted tranformer or similar honecomb but cannot find it again yet - good night

ROOT IS NOT UNLOCKING BOOTLOADER
TO INSTALL CUSTOM ROM / CUSTOM RECOVERY NEEDS UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER
Yes root is great and it probably helps but its a separate issue to getting custom roms
nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
so with this root, can i store games on the external SD card and play it off the external SD card?
Allright, so we got root now! I really enjoy it, since I had struggles with some bloody sony software...
But! What would make me really happy is an unlocked boot loader... So maybe someone who can post in the devs section can copy my post! But I'd like to pledge 15 dollar for the one who can unlock the boot loader
Maybe this is the way to speed things up, and we can run custom roms! So we don't need sony's ICS update. And we won't lose root when it is coming
Greetz!
So I used to have a rooted nook using the DeanGibson method. I learned a lot but it was a lot of hours which I don't really have right now. 1.4.2 removed root & market access so it looks like it's back to square one.
Looking at the options it looks like the albertwertz methods are the quickest, but the problem is now he's got 2 (the original from January and now the R3 method). I can't easily discern the difference between the 2, and since I'm a newbie I can't post in the dev thread to ask. Here are my questions:
1) Can anyone tell me briefly what the difference between the methods is?
2) Has anyone tried both, and if so which is preferable?
3) What is the smallest SD card to use? Looks like 2G is plenty but nowhere is the requirement spelled out.
Thanks xda community for your help!
**Update: I have been all over this forum for the past 3 months and don't know how I missed it; though I had seen all the methods, but was not familiar with the Brian21 SD card method. I gave it a shot since it indicated that I might not have to start from scratch. SUCCESS!!! This worked great, was very fast & simple, kept most of my apps (if not all the settings). Thanx whale2 & brian21.
What about Brianf21 method of rooting?

What about Brian's method? I am a noob too and do not know what would be best for you.
I also lack the ten posts to post on the Dev thread. I am wondering if a totally micro SD based CM7 will be available soon or perhaps is available now? I do not wish to purchase a card from guys like n2a and have a card with software not upgraded fairly often. It was nice having the "nightlies" for my Nook Color.
Are we a the place when the CM7 can be put on a card and kept on the card. When the card is out the Nook Tablet would revert to a stock Nook Tablet? I like so many of the stock attributes that I would like both CM7 and Stock.
Any help would be appreciated.

I haven't really looked into the R3 method too much but I'm pretty sure that is an all-in-one root access, recovery, and custom rom card that it makes.
The other method is much simpler. All it does is allow you to boot into a custom recovery and push a zip file that then roots the device.
3) What is the smallest SD card to use? Looks like 2G is plenty but nowhere is the requirement spelled out.

1GB would actually suffice for the second method I discussed as the partition it needs is very small. Use a 2GB just in case.
Here is how I would suggest to do it:
Use the recovery sd method. When you are done, you will have root access. From here, you can boot back into the B&N OS and call it a day.
From here, if you want to play with CM7, you could reformat the card you made and instead make a card that boots into CM7 (look for the thread in development).
I highly suggest that, after rooting, you use Indirect's app to flash an internal recovery, regardless of what you decide to do.

Good god do you people just browse the forums with your eyes closed? It literally says it in the title.
Which totally micro SD based CM7 method do you recommend?
I would like my Nook Tab to remain stock, especially since B&N plans to repartition all the Stock Tabs after March 12.
Ok I am not a nooby to rooting and have done it on many devices.
I will say this though I have never seen so many different ways to root one device.
So far I like the sd card root method. But any way here are my questions.
1. what is the best way to Root? Possibly the Sd card way?
2. How Do I repartition the Nook To be able to Utilize the 13Gb of space on it
3.Is there a way to sideload the Android Market (Google Play)?
4. How do you put on CWM
5. What is the most stable Rom that gets rid of bloatware and feels the most like Gingerbread. If its CM7 which version.
If you want you can just point me to Thread links. I am not afraid to read or anything. Its just that there seem to be 7 ways to everything I just asked about and its a little confusing to know which direction to go.
So any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much.
1. The SD card way definitely.
2. Easiest thing to do is take it to B&N and have them do it. You can do it yourself though with this thread.
3. If you only root, the sd card way of rooting will automatically add the play store.
4. Indirect has an app here that will allow you to flash CWM or the stock recovery (the latter option is good for if you ever need to return the device to stock conditions). Simple and easy. This app is actually included with the sdcard root method (it'll be on the sdcard after you burn the image to the sdcard). So once you are in the B&N OS with root access, you'll be able to use a file manager to find the apk for this app, install it and then flash CWM.
5. CM7 Final is the basis for the other CM7 roms. CM9 is cool too though, albeit hardware acceleration does not work yet so things like Netflix and higher end games do not work. I've also listed all current roms that are out for the nook tablet here.
It sounds like you have a decent idea of what you're doing and possibly some experience with Android so you know the drill. Read thoroughly and follow directions to the T and you will be fine. Good luck.

Actually looking at the list of apps that is included with the root script, it doesn't seem the play store is listed. Regardless, its trivial to add.
And if you decide to go custom rom, its as simple as flashing gapps after you flash the rom.
---------- Post added at 02:57 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:55 PM ----------
Google mandates that the play store and other google apps cannot be included with roms. However, you can fetch google apps from here and flash them after flashing an AOSP rom like CM7 or CM9. Just make sure you flash the right ones (i.e. cyanogenmod 7 package for CM7).

is there any pitfalls if you partition the drive where you have all 13 gigs available to you and none for the B&N section of the tablet?
I called B&N and they said if they partition it they do about half and half and will not give you access to the whole Hard Drive. Boo!!
Basically, if you opt for more "media storage" then you forfeit space for /userdata which is app install storage.
This step:
Give a value between 11.6 and 13.6 that will leave you with>> 11.6GB: 4GB for /userdata | 13.6: 2GB for /userdata

Basically portrays the min/max potential here. If you opt for 11.6 "media" storage, then you will be left with 4GB for app installation. If you opt for the max, 13.6GB, then you will be left with 2GB app installation.
You could always redo it as well I believe.

I thought these changes were made to the rom but maybe not. If these lines in your build.prop file are different, change them to look how they're shown in this post and you should be able to mount the internal media storage and your sdcard.
Note that if you decide to try cm9, there is no support yet for mounting the internal media on a computer.

Edit:Made a new thread, seems i had more questions than i thought...
Just a quick question don't wanna make a new thread for this:
What i want to do is extend my media drive for my own books and videos and also id like to Root via the sd card method as mentioned in the 2nd post here.
I'm wondering in which order to do it all though.
1. should i get adb tools working first doing the first part only in this video (as instructed in this thread i think?)and then use the CWM included in the sd-card method?
Or
2. Start with the sd card method and then install adb tools and extend my media partition?
Also do i need to worry about the Tools part which is the 3rd thing you need for extending your partition, unless something goes wrong?

I don't think you can just toss everything on your card like that because not all apps will work natively from the sd card like you used to be able to do with previous versions of Android.. You would have to run a mod to get your sd card to be set as internal and vice versa... Check out this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1772234 :good:

Hey shojus, thanks for help and the links. Can you confirm that this works on the Verizon version of the Note 2 specifically? I ask because I'm really nervous about flashing my phone too much and possibly bricking it. I'm actually very tech savvy, but this is my first jump into rooting an Android phone. Here's the basic scoop:
I need more space so I rooted my phone so I could employ a memory mod to give myself more room for apps. I first attempted using directory bind, but that didn't seem to work. It DID bind apps to my external sd, but there were several issues popping up (apps that refused to load, and more importantly the actual directory bind app was glitching). I ended up ditching that method and thought I'd look into a memory switch method, such as the one you've linked to. However, after thoroughly reading up on the idea of rooting and custom roms, etc, I'm nervous about flashing the wrong rom or patching the wrong software and killing my Note 2. I have a Verizon Note 2 that I rooted using Odin and I used Bean's rom to do so. I really like Bean's rom, but I don't mind flashing to a new rom if it means I'll be able to get more memory. I may end up just flashing to the rom you linked to that has the memory-switch built in to it, but I really do like Bean's rom, so I'd rather find a way to get the memory switch done while still running Bean's rom, if that's possible. If not, can I just jump from Bean's rom (like I currently am) into that other custom rom that has the memory-switch built in?
Thanks for the help!
