It will be possible?
well froyo is doing some problems to the devs.. i think it would be better to get froyo working since gingerbread will take 4 months
NO!
Minimum hardware requirements for Android 3.0 devices are: 1GHZ CPU, 512MB or RAM, displays from 3.5” and higher. (source)
beat me to it.
yea, considering the minimum system requirements for 3.0 I would have to say no. most Hero users cant even overclock past 695MHz so its a no go.
From what Im reading, theyre killing all custom UI with it too. no more Sense, no more Motoblur, no more nothing. just the new stock google UI that theyre working on.
I kinda see it as a good thing. the one problem with Android phones has been that the customization has been too vast. there needs to be more industry standards just like the iphone or we're going to run into phone wars that dont just involve iphone vs android.
I don't think that we won't be able to get Sense etc because that is the beauty of Android, freedom and customization. If we lose a little of both then...I don't know,I just don't want it to turn iPhoney!I think that they only will give a standard UI for apps so that we avoid the current situation, which is that every app has its own UI and there is no consistency. My opinion though...
If the minimum spec is 1Ghz for gingerbread, then all that news about fragmentation that google going on about is a load of rubbish!
I guess it will soon be the end of the road for the htc hero!

We will first starve to death and then google might face problems!Anyway...Microsoft gave similar specs for WP7 but I've already seen a ported version running on the Diamond! What I've learned here in XDA-Devs is that we can never say never! My opinion? We will see Gingerbread on the Hero but it will never run well or smooth enough...Unless we can change its chipset!

Wouldn't the absence of 'HTC Sense' allow JIT to play an even greater role in boosting performance?
Re: Froyo
There's also a Dalvik JIT compiler that improves overall CPU-bound code performance by two to five times compared to version 2.1.

Nah...I'm sure they can develop some kind of patch to enable JIT with Sense like the ones here on XDA(right now I can remember Feeyo's and Villain's ones).
Will it be hard...
Hell yeah!!!!
But it isn't impossible just today some developers made ubuntu and Android 2.1 on HTC HD2

My point was that 'Sense' doesn't seem to benefit from JIT, and that 3.0 will have a superior UI making it unnecessary anyway. If the new UI isn't incredibly demanding (the reason for the 1ghz requirement cited?) and benefits from JIT, chances are that Hero can handle it.
Android 3.0 will also have a completely refreshed user interface. According to UnwiredView, the new UI will resemble the Cooliris-made photo gallery application that's on the Nexus One. It will feature animated transitions between apps and screens.
Google has hired Palm's former webOS user interface designer, Matias Duarte. His new position at Google is with the Android user experience team.

No rom can beat JB regarding smoothness. I tried both PAC and Cyanogen, both are great in that regard, but i think PAC is a bit better due to the presence of AOKP and a better camera.
I wouldnt recommend 4.0 custom rom, especially with Aroma installer. I'm gonna say it blunt, as i think it : all those are frankeinstein monsters built from parts badly put together, there is no graphical cohesion or harmony. Even the Sony stock roms now get elements from other phones, and overall, look really, really amateurish.

I totally disagree. While the JB may be smooth without any apps installed and some tweaking, ICS allows you to run a plethora of apps like skype and facebook without becoming a lagging monster.
The majority of custom ICS roms out there are not pretty, but OptiMax 2, JellySandwich 7.4 are raising the bar. I also have really high hopes for Iced Bean 3.
For really smooth go for ForsakenGB rom 3! Also the best experience I have had gaming wise
Between Iced bean 2.1 and Optimax 2.0 ?
still jj hybrid for me.

I would say superleggra v3. I try all roms and always end up using it. Superb battery life and smoothness. Iced bin is also nice except having some small problem.

Are you implying that 4.1 can become a lagging monster ? Because i never saw that with my eyes.
On the other hand, yeah, 4.0 is stable. Stable in sluggishy, but stable. Unless you have friends and many texts : then, you're screwed.

I am not implying, I am saying that it can become a lagging monster. I have experienced it myself. It only takes a few large apps to overload 4.1.

Well. I have 140 apps on my phone. 40 of them are games. I use swap and link2sd to make space. I use my rom with those apps and without swap enabled when i paly a game like subway surfers. It runs smoothly and when i hit home i have my launcehr full of widgets. Then with subway surfer in memory i launch Nfs most wanted and i play it also with minimal lag. My mum texts me on whats app that moment so i realise whats app didnt get killed by those two games. So i can say i have superb multitasking in genereal on ics not saying only in my rom but my rom improowes things... i tryed fxp145 witch is their most stable relese. It was smooth. i agree but it was smooth until i installed my 140 apps. I enabled swap(on ics i told about i didnt used swap) so i enabled it cuz it wass laggy and apps were starting very slow. So i rebooted wit swap and launched subway surfers. It was smooth. I liked this. but after 1 min playing it started laging I pressed home. and i had no launcher. It was killed(god damn it this is suposed to be cm10) I realy disliked that. anyway then i ensured subway surf is in memory cached and i launched nfs most wanted. I started playign and it was lagging a lot then told my mum to whats app me. I receved it and nfs most wanted killed itself and it returned me to home automatically and again my launcher was killd. So is jb good - yes but not for our xperias. We dont have any drivers for it. So thats why.

I was like "how much does it take, seriously ?", and then Mr Tapa made his post. 140 apps, are you godamn ****ing serious ?
Honestly, 140 is not much. It may seem for people who only knew smartphones with so little internal storage but believe once you enter the tablet or the more recent smartphones, 8 gb isn't even enough !

That would be thinking we have an endless need for apps and stuff only limited by storage. Sorry dude, but this isn't even remotely intelligent. 140 apps, not much ? I'm not even sure the uncompressible time of loading all of them can fit during a few days of a busy man.
Sorry to say guyz, but when you answer something like "4.1 can be a laggy monster", have the reflex to end up your sentence : "when i install my 140 applications, wich is not much", so that some readers can quickly detect they're just not talking about the damn same thing.
So, to me : i have 12 dowloaded applications, never saw 4.1 get laggy whatsoever. But i communicate a lot with texts, and as soon as i reach 30 of them on internal memory, all the 4.0 i've tested become increasingly sluggy, to a point where opening my contacts app takes up to 5 seconds.

mark, I give a tip of the games you should try and see and have lags before releasing the rom, to see if the performance is optimal ...:
Need For Speed Most Wanted
The Amazing Spiderman
Wild Blood
AVP Evolution
ganstar Rio
Modern Combat 4
and Grand Thef Auto Vice City ..
These games are more commonly given lag, and thus always from my point of view, determine if the rom has optimal performance or not ..

OMG, the title says [ICS]
| CyberScopes |
sorry didnt noticed
markphyton can you make it multiboot aware please....
and if you want i can test it for you too...
well, i tested this rom since yesterday..thanks mark.
1-great rom, super eye candy, fast enough after 1 boot (takes a long time as he said, just wait it will boot).
2-music great,all features working,great look,nice sound.
3-with all my normal installation in a rom i didnt find any bug at all..
4-only play store get to stuck a bit.i did this, out of the app, force close, turn off wifi, and launch again..works fine then.
5-needs debloat..only 130-150 ram free..not bad but could be a little better. i used titanium backup to do it,and remove many things i simply dont use..everybody can do the same, but it was nice if mark do a light version.
6-gaming..i was really surprised..Vtennis 4 and NFMW runs amazing..(i recommend setting cpu max 1204 and min 249 to play better but its fluid..a tiny lag here and then but even in GB we have it sometimes. see here NFMW TEST CLICK HERE
7-battery life- i was surprised..since last night (12 hours or so after all my normal installaton to prepare the rom and all and after i sleep (all night network on, 1% battery spend only ) i spend like 12% overall..listen to music, playing for some minutes to test..so its great.
8-camera,video (1280x720)and panorama working fine.
kernel used LUPUS BETA V12 ICS 720p..i will try with new GB+ICS.:good:
so..this rom so far 9/10.amazing work mark.

This is the best the device can do. Remember it is run by more than two year old SD400 processor, and just 2200mah battery. This phone is heavily optimised for smooth operations of a very average user. It will not play power hungry games properly. If gaming was your forte, you should have looked elsewhere. Sorry.

Oh that's great. However I feel you will end up pushing the device which will result in heating and battery drain.
Btw, would you recommend buying this device? I am in the market to buy a new phone. I like HTC phones. Currently using HTC One M8 Eye as my secondary phone. I need to buy a 4G phone for primary use. I am kind of between heavy user and light user. I don't play games. I thought of buying this phone cuz it looks stylish and the prices seem to have come down. I can fetch this in india for INR8300 (USD 125). My budget is under USD150.
So I wanted to write this quick and simple tutorial on how to get utter smooth UI. it only takes 3 quick things and you'll be set.
1. Use Nova Launcher. TOUCHWIZ has come a long way but it's still not where it needs to be.
2. Under developer options make all the animations .5
3. Under developer options turn on Force GPU Rendering.
With these three things done this phone is absolutely butter smooth and runs super fast.

How does Force GPU Rendering speed things up?
And shouldn't the animations be 0?

You can install system UI tuner and make the animations even faster. I set it at 0.3 now. Also make sure you disable as many things as possible, things you don't use and especially knox and secure folder.
I'm grateful because I know someone learned something. But I thought this was pretty common.
I've been away from Samsung since note 4. Sad these devices still have that slight lag.
None of what's in the op fixes the issue in the long wrong. First thing I did when I recurved the phone but 2 months later, lag fest.
Luckily I got mine for free.
Strange. It's the first sam smartphone that imho is W/O lags. No one. With a REAL multitasking. To start i have 3GB of free ram for ALL my apps.

On another note, would you happen to know of a way to get the frosted app drawer look Touchwiz has on Nova?

Same here. Not even the tiniest lag or stutter. Set my animation speed to 0.5x (I do that even on AOSP phones) and it's faster than anything. Apps load instantly. Battery life is great. Screen quality is unbelievable. Camera quality is sick. Best phone I ever had. Now when I see how many problems Pixel 2 and 2 XL has. I'm happy that I got this phone. Samsung is improving a lot. But next year I might switch to Pixel 3 XL(only if they will fix all these problems).
I think the Play Store and Chrome lag from time to time. The Samsung browser is smoother.
Mine I set it ot High Performance Mode, 0.5 transitions, force gpu rendering on 2d apps.

This shouldn't even be up for discussion. If your touchwiz UI is not smooth on this phone maybe do a restore or check for 3rd party software utilizing your CPU in back ground. This phone doesn't need 3rd party launcher or customization to be smooth.

Performance modes do nothing in terms of how CPU and GPU are handled all they do is mess with resolution screen brightness.
Also force GPU 2d is doing nothing for you as it was put in place long time ago for apps that didn't utilize GPU for 2d. This day age with new android and touchwiz your GPU is being used and you could test this buy enabling *show GPU view updates* in dev options and navigate your UI and you will see the screen flashes red that because your GPU is already being used
^^ Thanks for the tip. I have moved on to X.

Well good for you Some people can't handle the options you get with Android. At least you know your limitations. Best of luck on the X !
Note....this isn't sarcasm. Coming from a technical background, if you don't need or use the features of the note, by all means go with something simpler for you to use! My wife loves her iPhones..... I have an i7 MacBook pro and I've built several hackintosh towers. I'm not against apple but their iOS can't do what I need it to physically / technically. The note is the best of the best of the Android platform at the moment.

I though about the X as only thing really holding back on ever getting iphone really was lack of OLED as im not into rooting and custom ROMS anymore.
Wanted X more so for game optimization but is way too much $$$ for what you get.
Glad I didn't though the note 8 *qualcomm*is huge surprise in terms of performance compared to like my note 5 that would thermal throttle way too fast and frames would drop. This phone has no noticeable thermal throttling with games so games that support 60fps run smooth and sustain performance and course you cant beat the quality of this screen my UHD mkv movies look so good on this.
