baseband question - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I have the good MDK baseband and currently on Hyperdrive AOSP. I wanted to upgrade my radio. Is this the same as baseband, will it break something?

Radio is separate from build base...
safestrap enabled, Hyperdrive driven

Yes radios are the baseband version. Heres where the radios are, but to be safe I would make sure the MD5 matches before flashing in recovery. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=46550751

Thanks.
And just because i can't figure this one thing out. How come so many people who upgrade their phones are locked out of unlocking/root, yet i can go up and down ?

Could flashing a radio other than mdk on mdk bootloader Bork your ability to make calls? I flashed mk2 radio over mdk bootloader and could not make calls on Sammy roms but could if I flashed cm based roms.

You can go up and down in terms of radios and android versions, not builds. We're you to odin to anything but mdk you would be stuck in a state where you could not regain an unlocked bootloader. All builds have a root method though. If this is something you don't understand I would research it more, simply to prevent you from accidentally losing your mdk build.

ahh, so narrowed it down to builds. So what is a build? I have ODINed before, obviously to MDK. When a build, such as hyperdrive or eclipse 4.4.2 is made, it seems that they keep the parts that link back to MDK. What is that part? The reason i ask is because i want to start making my own builds and would like a deep understanding so i don't screw up.

Those roms (I'm assuming) don't touch the bootloader, which is the part of the mdk build that you must not change in order to maintain the loki exploit that allows you to load custom roms and kernels. If you build a rom from aosp source or what have you just make sure it doesn't include any parts of the bootloader/boot chain and you should be ok.

[Q] Possible stupid question

So I just noticed today (been very busy with work) that there are some ME7 roms. I wanted to try the, is it Bone Stock one. So my stupid question, is if I try this rom.. I am not stuck to that am I? Like if I took the OTA I am stuck with that... that isnt the case with one of the ME7 roms, correct?
Sorry for the ignorance.
If you took the ota ME7 update, you can root, but cannot flash any roms as there is no custom recovery available. If your still on MDK, you can root and install custom recovery which will allow you to flash roms, even ME7 roms.

You won't be disappointed if you're looking for a stable ROM and good battery life. Not that I have anything bad to say about the others. All the active choices seem good.

S4 has never had an unlocked bootloader, it uses the Loki exploit which enables you to basically do everything you could do with an unlocked boot loader. I think all this bootloader talk has many misinformed. I could care less about an unlocked bootloader, I would like an exploit like Loki again if possible.
But to answer your question, you will still have the Loki exploit.

If I'm on MDK with a custom recovery installed, would I never need to update my phone

Say I'm running MDK 4.2.2, I have a custom recovery installed, and then 4.3 comes out. Could I just wait for a dev to release their own flashable version of TouchWiz 4.3 with the unlocked bootloader and MDK baseband? Or would it not be the same as updating to 4.3 OTA (so, would the update not be as "good")? Sorry if this is a really noob question. Thanks!

Never take an update from Samsung/Verizon. At least as long as we have developer support just wait for a flashable ROM to be released.
BTW - the baseband is not relevant on this issue. You can flash a new radio if you choose. I've seen no reason to but many have.

[Q] rooted, custom rom, update MDK?

So, I have unlocked bootloader, rooted, running custom recovery and amd currently running MDK baseband.
I do see that there have been several updates to the radio (baseband) but also a lot of stuff that gives me pause.
Is it possible for me to upgrade the baseband without loosing the unlocked bootloader, SU, and custom recovery?
If it is, is there any advantage?
I have tried almost every radio from the various updates . . none are any better in my opinion. I say leave it alone.

I would agree, but if you want to change things, I'd recommend backing up in recovery before making any changes so you can revert easily. A lot of the custom ROMs will also update the radio, and you get a lot of other nice features and improvements (ie. better batterylife).

Sticky at the top of general
In here I think the post on the radio is in the second posting.
I still think the hassle to do the radio change only is not worth the effort.

You can flash radios without affecting anything else if you do it correctly. Go to the modems thread on the first page of this section and follow the instructions Surge posted.
Usually the radios don't make much difference, but you could at least update to mj7, which enables LTE band 4, a new & faster band if it is activated in your area.

No bootloader unlock exists, you can't run AOSP roms. There's multiple 4.4.2 TW roms in the android development section

my understanding that unless u are 100% stock and that means NO root, the OTA will mess up.

Not precisely. You can be rooted but otherwise stock and manage to take the OTA successfully. That will leave you unrooted.
My phone was rooted factory stock and would have taken the OTA successfully if not for a single modified file left behind by an older version of SuperSU and a file modified by Safestrap. If Safestrap wasn't active and without that old SuperSU thing it would have taken the OTA.
From a practical standpoint, you're right. Unless you're stock, there's a good chance the OTA will fail to start. And keep nagging you each time it fails.

If you are on MK2, than you have a locked bootloader, which as of today is STILL UNLOCKABLE!!!!
Therefore, there is no AOSP ROMS avaiable for us, SafeSTrap users, which means that we can only flash TW based ROMS!
there are tons of ROMs for us, SS users, and the first 3 ROMs that pop into my mind which are the best of the best for us i337 AT&T users with MK2 locked bootloaders is these:
SHOstock-i v7.0 ==> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2468860
Deadly Venom v3.0.2 ==> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2447482
HyperDrive ==> Android 4.3 RLS15 : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2520418
HyperDrive ==> KitKat 4.4.2 RLS17 : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2301724
And here is an INDEX for ALL ROMS for the Galaxy S4, 4.3 and 4.4.2 ...this here is the best forum there is for our S4: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2616221
If I helped you, please hit THANKS, it's not that hard...
I have spoke of surge's upgrade/downgrade methods before. He is a senior member here on xda. The other method I know of, as far as upgrade/downgrade, is giglies. Giglies method came out after. It's fewer steps but the documentation could use an overhaul. If you see a post around the s4 forums with surge's name on it, I bet a lot of people are going to see what he has to say about it
Sent from my SCH-I545 using XDA Free mobile app
with towel root now available for use on NC5 phones, the need to upgrade/downgrade really is no longer a driving force.

Updating to newest firmware?

Well I think I am going to loose my root access and update to the newest firmware and radios from Verizon. I don't do much with rooting and custom ROM's, etc anymore and I figure it is time to move onto the newest stuff. What is the best way to do this?
Currently I am on MDK stock firmware, but rooted and TWRP recovery.
Thanks guys.

Personally, I'd say don't do it. an MDK phone is becoming a rare commodity. You could put a custom rom on there that gives you the latest functionality of the newer releases without the bloat that comes from an OTA. Not all roms are full of fancy bells and whistles. I run Danvdh's GPE rom wich is pretty much just plain vanilla AOSP. I am running a newer radio (NC2) but other than ththe rom and radio, it's nothing fancy.
Hang on to the MDK as long as you can.

Danvdh puts a lot of work into his ports of the GPE roms and because it is a GPE rom, it is designed for our phones. For me, it is the ultimate stock rom with no additional carrier or OEM bloat. Just fully functioning Android and now at 4.4.4. You can't get much newer than that.
