You don't ned to factory reset to do the update. And it is only a small update to fix roaming and some radio improvements. Not that bad at all.
I was rooted and on a custom ROM. I used Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper app from Play Store to backup root, temporarily unroot and then take the new OTA update.
Once update was complete and phone rebooted, I went back into VooDoo and restored root. I did another reboot to fully restore root privileges. And all is good again. And stock ROM has new update and I can still go and use a custom ROM if desired.
Hope this helps ya.
Already updated, Gains in performance already!

Oh, sorry, I didn't mean to insinuate that a Factory Reset was needed to DO the update, I had already did the update, as you can see in the screen cap! But like the last 2 updates, I figured this latest one could stand a Factory Reset in order to improve system and app stability, as well as provide additional performance gains intended by the update (at least that was the case with the last update, maybe not the 1st). When I did the last update, early last year, the factor reset GREATLY improved my phone's battery life, system stability and performance. However, after using this new update for the last 24hrs, I have (oddly enough) seen some performance gains! I haven't done the factory reset yet, and will hold off to see if performance continues to be evident.
And by performance gains, I'm referring to app speed, reduction in lag (though, of course, the phone is still laggy as all hell, but it's a lot better), and animations/transitions.
Oh, and thanks so much @beyedup for the quick rundown of what was done in the update!
I haven't seen an all inclusive list but what I did see is very minor at most. Seems like it was directed at Canadian carrier issues.
Boot Loop after 98.72.165.en.us
My phone seems to be boot-looping following the attempted install of 98.72.165.en.us.
I get the android on his back with his guts open and a Red triangle and exclamation point inside.
The phone then reboots and appears to come up normally, but within a minute or two, it indicates that it is powering down.
It then reboots again, I see the android again. blah blah blah.
Suggestions on fixing this would be appreciated.

Has anyone actually seen improvement from this yet.. Because if its radio improvement I pretty sure we didn't need one. When I have full 4G signal there is no other devices faster.. I've compared the xt912 to the HTC DNA and One, Samsung Galaxy Note, and the new Droid line as well as many others including the N4 and 5 and the xt912 beats them by a large margin every time .. Wouldn't be worth the update if that went backwards! Just curious if anyone actual noticed improvement before I let this update fly!

I haven't had the opportunity to test it yet, but the radio needed MAJOR improvement. The 3G/4G radio may have been fine, but the BT radio was a problem. Ever since the first JB update, the only apps that work through my car's BT are the stock music app and Poweramp. Everything worked great in ICS. I've read numerous posts with people having the same issues with various makes and models of cars.
EDIT: Survival mode in Super SU Pro worked great with this update.
Is it necessary to unroot to do the update?

No, but it may be necessary to re-root after the update. I'm not sure if any of the current root methods still work with the new update, but OTA root survival methods still seem to work fine. For all I know, the current update may not even be killing root access in the first place, but you should definitely play it safe by using something like OTA Rootkeeper or SuperSU Survival mode (Pro only).
Its a small update for Canadian users. It's nothing major. Everything else is the same. I had to unroot to install and reroot after update. xt912 Verizon CDMA

Why do I get an update fail message with this update? I have downloaded the update many times. Android man eventually lays on his back with red triangle. After this is the reboot with fail message.

Did you unroot if rooted? If not, backup your root. Then unroot. Download OTA update and let it install. Then go back and restore root. I used Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper. This time it has worked fine for me. I know I've heard from others that it has failed to restore root for them.
I am not sure if RAZR Utility will still root with this update. I haven't heard anything yet if it will or not.
Hope this helps.

I know a factory reset might not be desirable, but it may be necessary in your case. I would backup any app data you don't want to lose, then go in to recovery mode and do a factory reset, then download Rootkeeper, backup root and temp unroot, then attempt to update.
I was hoping this update would fix a problem with bluetooth that I have had since jelly bean came to our phones. The volume control does not work. It's either full volume or no volume when connected to a speaker. The problem is pretty well documented on the web. I had my fingers crossed. No luck...

You and me both! Ever since JB, BT functions with my car stereo have been severely limited. I have to turn off BT to use navigation or any other app that isn't either the stock music app or Poweramp. Unfortunately, this update didn't change a thing.

I started this thread to note fixes or not the OFFICIAL OTA release on or about 101211 accomplished without having to manually run the pre release/leaked sbf, This way we can rule out any problems associated with that process as the cause. I have tested the following fixes successfully and my phone is rooted:
Voicemail played on my BT headset more than once without rebooting unexpectedly.
Stay awake while charged remains checked after opening kickstand.
Calls have not dropped yet so I am encouraged.
I can't even get my damn thing to go. I supposedly started it about 5 hours ago and haven't seen a single status message since. Whenever I go back into Update Motorola Software it says I can't because an update is already in progress... Yeah it's cool they're putting out updates to fix problems but 1. It's nice not to have problems in the first place and 2. It would be cool if they would actually download.
This isn't the first update that's sat there and stared at me for hours.

The leaked SBF and the OTA SBF are exactly the same. Exactly. You can verify the hashes yourself if you like. See link below.
If you can't get the OTA to download/install correctly, just download RSD Lite and the SBF from the dev forums and flash it manually with RSD lite. That works very reliably. See below.

This OTA was a pain for me too. After 12 hours of overnight nothing, pulled the battery and 3 hours later it worked. Not saying the battery pull was needed. Something different/wrong about this one.
So far, I'm seeing faster data (3G & WiFi, no 4G in my area yet), and all around snappier response. Let alone the obvious, like VIDEO CHAT! (That's huge for me, since my daughter lives 2,000 miles away from me, and I really only get to see her on webcam).

You're missing the point...
This thread was not started because I thought there was a difference in the builds. This thread was started because there is a difference in what one must do to install the updates. Installing the Official OTA eliminates any problem one may have run into using RSDlite as the reason the build did not fix whatever they hoped it would. Not to mention the fact the pre-release thread is 80 frigging pages long, predates the 101211 release date and refers to steps one would not see/experience downloading or installing the Official OTA update.

I don't think you understand. There is no difference in terms of actual changes made to the phone between OTA and manually flashing through RSD.
The SBF contains everything on the phone, system image, radio changes, etc. Everything. You can completely wipe the phone clean and the SBF will give you back a stock working phone exactly as if you had Motorola do the OTA.
Now, if you are having trouble using RSD Lite, that's an issue with RSD Lite. Post the errors and we might be able to help.
Big fix for me was that I can now answer the phone in the car dock and play sound through the car speakers. Before, if you tried that (by hitting the speaker button), the mic wouldn't function.

Again, this phone and update is solid with nothing to fix. With this phone Android and Moto have arrived.

I updated a moment ago from stock to stock.
So far it seems to be smoother. I meant really reminding me of the word "silky"
but I can't get Vibrant Feedback of stock multitouch keyboard to work even I ticked it at settings.
Sound feedback of the multi touch keyboard is fine.
Anyone else having issue like this?
The physical key haptic feedback when I press anything is still there. So I assume it is the software issue only.

There have been a lot of 3G and 4G outages in the past several days. Make sure you're not a victim of that. There are DEFINITE issues this morning. I don't have the update installed, totally stock phone - and yesterday and today I have no 4G at work. I'm on a 4th floor by a window. I normally have a great 4G connection here.
Everyone Else: There's no trick you can do at this point to get the update. It's not released officially, it's only been sent out to a few beta testers. You are either going to get it by checking for the update, or not. Eventually they'll release it to everyone soon.
I'm in the same boat as mistawolfe, the update has made things much worse for me on the data side. On my way to work today, I had NO data for more than half the time, and only 3G the other half of the time. While at home, I have always had strong 4G and that has not changed after the update. But at work yesterday after I applied the update, it was the same thing, only 3G or NO data. Same today, more than half the time I have no data, and the other half only 3G. Going back and forth between no data and data is unacceptable. 3G/4G switching is fine, but this is horrible. 1/2 the time I can't even use the data. Terrible. I would not recommend this update.

It does turd. Day 4 here and I'm currently RSDing right back to stock then onward to .173
Couldn't take the following anymore:
Pull down curtain becomes TOTALLY unresponsive at random times. Hot reboot required to fix.
After dialing a phone number, talking, hanging up and the going to make another call, the previous phone number I dialed is there causing me to dial a 20 digit number
Google Voice notifications do not stay in the curtain. They notify then automatically get deleted.
WiFi connectivity drops out random, dconn and reconn to fix.
Prepare for De-Turding!
...and now you know, folks, why we're apparently getting another Gingerbread update prior to ICS. Development can be fun, but be certain--Motorola knows what they're doing.

Did you do a full wipe after you installed the leak? I have a few minor issues but its still running good. Froze 30 apps though lol
My Wi-fi is bad on Gingerbread anyway.

Personally, I've been very content with GB. When I started seeing all the ICS leak posts, I got curious and thought, "why not?"
I've tried it, and actually thought the leak was very nice. However, I felt better going back to stock for now as it looks like a new GB OTA will be released soon, and hopefully ICS not too far after.
Really liked what I saw in the ICS build.

Everyone on the leak will begin to experience what I did. It's unlikely, but possibly, that I have a defective phone, so it'll happen.
I did do a factory reset, full wipe etc. and everything was incredible for about 4 days. Then as someone else so eloquently put it, ICS started to "Turd" on me.
Once it does that 100 times or so, you start thinking about "DeTurding" which is you're only option.
sadly, ICS isn't ready, nor will it be if we wait on Motorola.
Devs, start your threads! I'm willing to pay you to finish ICS!
Any chance you have a link to the files?

the cool thing though, is that we have "the" ICS base including kernel to build off of.. granted, we can't make many kernel tweaks beyond what's 'allowed' w/ a locked bootloader, but I believe having an ICS kernel directly from Moto will help w/ the CM9 builds etc..
Lots less to go wrong w/ having proper drivers etc. to work off of.
(hopefully anyway)
EDIT:.. I just fastbooted back to .173 and all seems well
I just installed ICS today, and I haven't experienced any of these problems at all. I'm curious as to how many of you factory reset after the install? Everything I've read says factory reset after install does the trick.
I absolutely love ICS! (but I'm glad to hear RSD works if I DO run into any problems)

I was trying to fast boot back earlier today and it it would get to the 5th item of flashing and give me an unknown error and fail. Luckily Matt G was able to flash back the 4G radio for me. He mentioned deleting the OEM lines will clear the errors.
I am not the greatest when it comes to command lines and all that junk. I have only ever used his utility but 1.5 wasn't restoring the 4G either. Now I have 1.51...
Is RSD just simply download the file, select the "uncompress and flash" or is there some other modification needed to flash the file?
Just hoping someone with a bit more know how can chime in.
*UPDATE:I re downloaded everything and it worked. Must have just been a bad DL of the RSD File.
Just got the new OTA, but still no Jelly Bean. I777UCLL6
IMEISV is now at version 7. No other changes I can see.

It looks like it updated Kies Air, and now the Facebook app won't open. I haven't noticed any other changes yet.
Hey all,
As some of you have already noted, an update is available for the Samsung Galaxy SII.
The update includes fixes for devices that may become unresponsive and/or power down while sitting idle on rare occasions. It also enhances security to protect against malware vulnerability. You will receive a notification on your phone to update.
NOTE - You must have updated to Android version 4.0 to receive notification of the new software update

What a complete waste. Sprint just pushed 4.1.2 to their gs2.

By rare, they must mean multiple times a day... hope that finally fixes the problem...
Had my hopes up for JB even though I know the phone will not get it from AT&T.
I guess it is good that they are still trying to improve the phone.

There's at least as much cya and marketing motivation involved as anything else.
I previously rooted and flashed Siyah 4.3.3 which resolved my issue with the sleep of death. This seems to prevent this new update from installing as when the phone reboots it shows the Siyah boot image and then boots back into the OS, when I unlock the phone it tells me that the update failed to install. I'm not in a hurry to install an update that resolves something I've fixed through other means, but I thought I'd share for those interested.

You really shouldn't accept OTA updates unless you are 100% stock.

You really CAN'T accept them if you remove system bloat ware or change kernels far as I know.
Hopefully it fixes the SOD problem. I was getting ready to call or go to AT&T and demand I be let out of my contract.

That's the best joke I've heard today.

This has been happening to me for the past few months, on more than "rare occassions" though. I never knew what to call it until I saw people on here refer to it as Sleep of Death. Yep, sounds about right. And it would rapidly drain my battery when it happened.
I've successfully updated, so hopefully this will take care of it. It gets VERY annoying! And all the much worse since I use my phone for my alarm, haha. I have my wife's as a backup though.
Anyone pull the modem yet?

I'm only a curious now, about whether this fixes the SOD. After hours on the phone with ATT and Samsung, and a few factory resets and a new phone, it was still doing it. And each time I called them about it, they'd say they were not aware of such a problem. Anyway, not an issue anymore for me, since going to Task's AOKP ROM, which got me so many better features than an ATT update ever would have - warranty or no.
The only reason why this OTA was pushed was because a ton of users were posting this issue on the ATT forums for 4 months straight. Even then ATT pushes an OTA for 4.0.4 instead of using one of the many 4.1.2 firmwares from Samsung.

My understanding is that it is up to Samsung to produce the firmware, and because it's a carrier-branded device, I have a hard time believing that they'd do that unless instructed to.
Really? You think Samsung is the one making the decision? Its really the carrier.
Can someone pull the modem from this update? Pm or post a download link once extracted please.

For the last few weeks my phone has been bugging me about an OTA update. I was surprised to see this because I thought the phone was no longer being updated.
However, I still can't find any information about this update online. What is this update? Does is break anything/are there any problems with it?
I always wait to install OTA updates in case people have problems with it but there is nothing out there. Anyone know?
Security update
Safe to install and doesn't break anything?
If you're on OC5, it isn't much different. Same way to root and everything
Slows the phone down quite a bit. My wife and I both noticed a performance hit after the update.

Haven't had any issues. My problem I was having with the phone locking up during app installs actually stopped after the update. I haven't noticed a performance decrease, although my root required hotspot doesn't seem to work at all anymore :-/
Mixed bag of opinions. Bleh.
My biggest issues lately are battery drain and my phone regularly needing a reboot when navigating with Waze while streaming with TuneIn. Not cool when the navigation craps out on an unfamiliar drive. But this might be the result of having very little free storage on my phone.
