Updating galaxy s3 to Android 4.3 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, i have a Galaxy s3 runing android 4.1.2, iv'e been trying to update it to 4.3 via kies, but i keep getting the message "your device's current firmware version is not supported to update firmware via kies". iv'e searched the problem over the web and i could not figure out the main reason for this. I noticed the main cause was the CSC and phone salse code didnt match. My CSC is I9300OJVEMA1, and as for the phone sales code-i don't know how to find it. ill be gratefull to anyone who could just explain and simplify the meaning of the codes and how to solve this problem as i could not understand from the different answeres over the web.
Thanks in advance

Learn to use the search function before making threads. Download a firmware and flash via odin. Explained here > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1922461
You will need stock firmware available from www.sammobile.com . Doesnt matter which country's you flash. CSC and PDA codes change by version as far as i know.

Thank you for your reply. i am aware of the search function but as i said, i wasn't sure if this was the right thing to do. once i flash any of the firmware, will i be able to update via kies normally?

That is not 100% that Kies or OTA will recognize firmware ,see multiple identical questions .

Upgrading through Odin / Kies

Hello,
This being my first Samsung phone, I'm a bit in the unknown, as far as official software updates are concerned.
I know that Kies is the tool to use if you want to stay official, however, when I tried it on mine, I got an "this version of the device cannot be updated". I'm currently running a variant of XWKE2 (PDA: KE2, PHONE:KDJ, CSC: KD4 (VVT)), which I've have bought it from a carrier here (Bulgaria -> Eastern Europe), it doesn't appear to be excessively branded, or at least has no logos/apps that would indicate this. And it seems that XWKE7 is the current official release.
Now, my first question is, why am I getting this message. Assuming Samsung is providing different updates to different parts of the EU, shouldn't I at least be getting a "You are running the latest version"? Will I ever get an official update, and will I have to wait for all of them?
Now, I'm considering using Odin to move to XWKE7. But I'd also like to receive updates via Kies, and searching through this forum is giving me mixed results on whether using Odin breaks this. Some people say that once Odin is used, the path to Kies is closed. Since those are different conversations with different contexts, I'm not sure whether the same answer will apply in my case as well.

A very good post and some very good questions. I debranded my phone recently but since doing so I can't seem to update to KE7 in kies as I expected to. I wish I'd never bothered now as I've not really gained anything. I just want to update to KE7 to make the most of improved battery performance. Is there a way to do this via odin?
Just flash the XWKE7 ROM through Odin?
It doesn't really matter if you get official updates or not, within 1-2 days of an official ROM being released there is usually a repack of some sort posted here.
my 2c
But does that mean that if I flash the KE7 via Odin, I will never again be able to upgrade via Kies? Or will I be able to work with Kies again, if I find and flash my particular firmware (which isn't present in the list here, so I won't have it)
Then maybe root it with CF-Root, and do a nandroid backup of everything?
Don't know about Kies not working, it shouldn't matter I would think....

Micksta, if I want to flash the XWKE7 Rom through Odin do I have to be very particular which one I use? My phone was purchased online through a 3rd party company. Even so, it was locked and branded to Three. Since debranding it my firmware now shows as PDA:KDD / PHONE:KDH / CSC:KD1 (XEU) in Kies.
Kies wont now look for updates as a result so it appears I wasted my time.
Any info on where I can find the right XWKE7 rom for my SGSII would be gratefully received.

So what you're saying is that regardless of the region from where the phone was purchased, or to whom it was originally branded, if we use the XWKE7 update with the XEU CSC, Kies will still work afterwards, and I can get future updates from it?

No the updates from Kies depend upon the product code on your phone .
Kies finds that product code in firmware bank and updates if later.
All i can say is some claim to upgrade firmware of a flashed stock rom via Kies . I have never managed that in the last year of trying .Update with original product codes yes stock never .
Their is a relevant post in dev section .

Updating this with an answer to my question, in case anyone else is wondering.
After flashing a stock samsung fw with a different CSC (mine was VVT, I picked XEU), unless you do a factory reset, the CSC will not change.
At first, Kies displayed the same message, that it couldn't update the fw on this phone. I removed it's registry entries for my phone, and after that it said that the phone was up-to-date. That may not be necessary however, since on another computer which was also connected to my phone at some point, the Kies automatically recognized that the software was up-to-date.
All in all, Kies will recognize your phone for future updates through it, if you flash a stock samsung fw with Odin.

I have problem rooting my SGS2 (PDA:KF3 / PHONE:KE7 / CSC:KF1 (DBT). Do you any idea how to do it? I tried using Odin/superoneclick but no luck. superoneclick hangs.
Thank you.

[Q] Why Kies Does Not Show Any Firmware

I'm from India.
I flashed my GSII to Baseband I9100DDKE4 via Odin. And now kies does not show any firmware for the phone. In the firmware coulmn it just leaves a blank.
What do i do to get newer updates via kies.
Plz Help.
Once you update to a mix and match firmware version using odin you wont be able to get updates from kies.
You need to flash a 100% stock rom with odin to go back to getting updates from odin, this can be your original rom or a newer leaked one.
Kies is very slow for updates, only 2 regions have a official KG 2.3.4 rom so far.
i flashed to 2.3.4 yesterday but then my phone was not being recognised in android market so i moved back to the stock i got from samfirmware but still kies says "this firmware cannot be updated". what do i do
Pick the correct carrier branded rom from here and flash it via odin
india does not have branded roms bro.
Pick one from the stock roms post then if you want updates then you need to pick an older firmware as Kies can not update firmware that is newer than on the server .If you dont know ask in the Indian thread .
jje
hey thanks bro but the problem got solved.
i think when i flashed it to 2.3.4 the region got changed to korea so i flashed it again with stock from samfirmware and used the CSC it provided. then used the *#272*imei# to change region to india and kies detected a firmware upgrade.
Thanks for your time bro.
Kies leaves blank field, that doesn't mean you have a problem. I too sometimes get blank in firmware update section, that maybe because Kies server is having a problem. Try again later, at night time. If Kies pops up 'This version of the device can not be upgraded' then it's a completely different matter.
Regards.

[Q] Kies doesnt show Firmware info neither updates

Hi,
I've been looking around for a week already and can't figure this out, was wondering if anyone could give me some advice.
Im running Kies version 2.0.3.11082_152. When I plug my SGS2 it prompts and gets to back up as normal but on summary it doesnt show my Firmware information and when I check for update it is just blank.
PDA: BOKG2
Phone: BOKG1
CSC: TMUKF1
Im still running Gingerbread 2.3.3 on T-Mobile (UK) and was wondering how can I update my Firmware other than Odin.
I spoke to T-Mob and they asked me to contact Samsung who wants me to take the phone to one of their authorized services but I'm not looking for all this hassle and just wanna get to update as normal.
Any helpfull input is more than welcome, Im still learning the way of the device and its being my 2nd week of use.
Really appreciate the help!
Hold "home+power+volume up" and see if you can get into stock recovery mode.If you cant then you firmware is not properly flashed into you phone.Your verion is here on XDA so you could re-flash it,it would still be stock and Kies might then recognize it.Also updates are regional and carrier based so if your carrier doesnt have the latest above 2.3.3 then there wont be any update either.Looking at the carrier firmware list the firmware you have stated is the latest here on XDA for T-Mobile UK so its posible that there isnt any update yet.
Thanks for your reply.
I did manage to get on recovery mode and about the T-mob firmware, I cant confirm there is one available but I assume there should be something wrong for the fact that I cant check my firmware info on kies.
I 'll probably try to flash same rom on odin.
When I was checking the T-Mob roms here, I cant discern which version of firmware it is. The details about about PDA / Phone / CSC has anything with it? I mean, how do I find which is 2.3.3 from 2.3.4 if any.
Thanks again for helping understanding.

Goto this link and get Odin v1.85 if you dont already have it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
You will see it almost right at the top where it says "FLASHING FIRMWARE WITH ODIN"
Then go to this one and scroll down to T-MOBILE and find UK.You will see the firmware you stated is the last on the list. This is because it hasnt been updated yet or there is no update.Anway, thats your download link.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113928
The first link explains it all.Odin is downloaded as a ZIP file. For the firmware when downloaded you just need to double click to get the extract menu.No Password. The firmware goes in PDA and without marking anything else hit the start button. That easy
EDIT:One more thing.Im one WIN7 and sometimes my antivirus gives a warning and gives the typicall red menu and all that.Dont worry its not a virus.Just hit the execute button or whatever yours shows and its all good. Its just the way your antivirus and firewalls are set to detect incoming stuff

Hi mate, I really appreciate your help! I did found those threads previously but as I stated before, I cant discern the difference from one firmware to the other. Its very noobish but I'm looking very much to learn.
This are the versions on the thread:
T-Mobile UK
BOKE3:http://www.multiupload.com/GY05UJM6DQ
Firmware info: PDA:BOKE3|PHONE:BOKD1|CSC:TMUKE3
BOKE3 Stock Kernel: http://www.multiupload.com/I41CAJ2BLS
Password: [email protected]
BOKF3:http://www.multiupload.com/15O4TE3FBT
Firmware info: PDA:BOKF3|PHONE:BOKF1|CSC:TMUKF1
BOKF3 Stock Kernel: http://www.multiupload.com/7EDUOBEYZW
Password: [email protected]
BOKG2:http://www.multiupload.com/VY5KOFVJHL
Firmware info: PDA:BOKG2|PHONE:BOKG1|CSC:TMUKF1
BOKG2 Stock Kernel: http://www.multiupload.com/TD5QBFPCIH
Password: [email protected]
I believe mine is the Firmware info: PDA:BOKG2|PHONE:BOKG1|CSC:TMUKF1 cause it matches mine so I assume its the version 2.3.3 but is there anyway of finding out from reading it? Like looking at those codes you know which version it is.
Sorry, I dont mean to be a pain for asking so much but I wish to understand how it is.
Also, I've spoken to samsung who confirmed T-Mob UK has version 2.3.4 for SGS2 available so I should be able to upgrade through Kies but Kies is rubbish and is stating my firmware as the latest.
I again appreciate all the help!
"androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s2-international/387520-understanding-csc-kernel-etc.html"
I found this thread on another forum which helped me to understand better what I was asking, I hope it can help more ppl as well.
Many thanks for all those that helped including the guys from "androidforums.com"
Also, I was rechecking the roms available and the one on my device is the latest listed on the branded firmwares, I wonder what would Samsung guys flash on my device if I take to their service centre, not looking for that anyway!
All the best!
PS: Cant post links yet, sorry for the mess.

[Q] Debrand Samsung Galaxy S2

Okay, i've read the very informative thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1064894&page=9
But am unable to post there, being a noob. So, here goes. My question has been answered already, but only partially. After a debrand, can the handset subsequently have the software updated routinely via Kies as it becomes available from Samsung?
The reason I say it has been partially answered already is because people are saying 'Yes, we will make the software available.' I need to know that it can be done via the normal route via Kies so that if I sell the handset on the new owner doesn't need to go searching for files to download and then have to do anything other than what they would have to do with a stock unbranded handset.
Cheers in advance.
Yes, once debranded (using stock firmware) you will be able to get updates by Kies. Though, personally I would do it manually using ODIN and the latest firmware from samfirmware - you can search this forum for both.

True answer is probably but not 100% when you change codes its always possible that Kies has no matching firmware for the codes your phone has after changing firmware .
You will get a number of posters saying yes no problem thats rather misleading as many have problems getting a Kies upgrade and my debrand resulted in no further Kies updates . ( not that i would use Kies anyway )
You can save original firmware via the branded providers roms post or use CHECKFUS to download the original .

[Q] Updating i9100 from Gingerbread 2.3.5

I'm entirely new to this so try to bear with me
I recently bought a Galaxy SII from a one day deals store and it arrived running Gingerbread 2.3.5. I want to update to the latest version available for the SII however the OTA update won't connect to the server and Kies (after at least two hours trying to get it to recognise my device) has told me that my current firmware can't be updated. Unless someone knows an obvious fix for Kies I guess I'm stuck with having to flash the new firmware using Odin. I'm using a guide on CNET (unfortunately I can't post links yet) that goes through installing ICS but replacing ICS with Jelly Bean.
The biggest problem is which firmware to get. My CSC code is OXA (Open Europe). Do I have to find firmware that matches that or can I just chose any one that I please then follow the guide that I'm using? I've been looking on SamMobile and there is a lot of different regions to chose from but none of them have the OXA CSC code and I don't know what to do. Also, is there anything I should look out for? I don't want to brick my phone.
Thanks in advance for your help. I'm sure it gets tiresome helping people like me.

There you go OXA It seems open Europe ended at 2.3.5 .. No wonder you can't update.. Anyway Poland's firmware should work just fine. Or just search the firmware of your own region. Do remember to do a factory reset after flashing JellyBean!
Alternately I recommend this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1544487 Its the latest firmware Samsung has to offer.

Thanks for the speedy reply. I think I understand now. The CSC is really only relevant to your current version. If I flash Jelly Bean from another region the CSC will just change to that region and still work as normal? Does it have any effect whatsoever on the function of the phone?

Yes CSC is bundled with the firmware. Dunno why but every time I flash a firmware it does not come with CSC and I must flash it manually.. Now that's a whole other story. If you plan on flashing a firmware not related to you region e.g you flash a European firmware while you stay in Asia then the CSC is quite pointless as kies won't let you update through it anyway. That said you must have the correct CSC/Firmware/Modem and region to recieve official updates through Kies. If not updating via Odin is good as well .

Well I live in New Zealand and the phone that I have has the European CSC code. The site that I got it from is called 1-day who claim to find the best prices from around the world in order to give ridiculously low prices. I assume that means that my phone came all the way over from Europe. Based on what you say then, I assume then that the CSC wouldn't matter in my case anyway as even stock, my CSC is in the wrong region?
