Yes, but most people aren't insane enough to spend $800 on a cell phone when it's only worth $200 to begin with. Unfortunately that's our only option with Verizon locking down all of their devices

How is it only worth $200? By what measure? Can you get one for $200? Could you get a regular S4 new for $200? $300? $400?
Nope, not with out signing a contract to have someone else pay the rest for you. Thats how subsidized phones on contract work.
It's like Verizon owns part of your phone because they do. Because you didn't pay for all of it. Notice how the cost to cancel a contract is similar to the difference in price of the subsidized phone and retail cost?

I have seen soooo many attempts to get a company to unlock bootloaders/release source code through the petitions... Not once have I seen success... Our best chances come through our devs...Verizon/Samsung don't care about petitions

I know you can't get one for 2-400 off contract. What I was saying was that the off contract price is ridiculous. Most people don't want to spend $800 dollars on something that should only cost 2-300 dollars. Alot of us need that extra $500. I don't object against an unlocked developer edition, just the awfully high price tag

The average unsubsidized phone costs about $500. You do understand what "unsubsidized" means, don't you?
Almost a year after introduction, this phone is still a top of the line product. The notion that this phone should retail for ~$200 is not grounded in reality.

Its basically a computer. How much for a laptop with a 1080P multitouch display, quad core processor, GPS unit, ect...
You cannot even match the specs of an S4 with a full sized laptop for $200... and that is before you make it fractions of an inch thick and throw in a 13mp camera.
I'm with you. Its awesome to be able to hack your cellphone and do whatever you want... but that is not the intention and not what you are owed its just something you have managed to take advantage of until this point. Now it seems that if you want full access to your cellphone, you have to pay full price for it... and as long as you ask Verizon to pay for part of it, they will have some say.
I don't like it, and I will circumvent it when I can... But its reasonable.
You know what irritates me? What's the difference between a dev s4 and retail? Do you guys know? I do. It's literally 80-some characters of code in aboot. So there going to charge 500 dollars more for 80 characters? You gotta be F 'ing kidding me.
So they're worried that people with unlocked bootloaders are going to file more warranty claims and that will lead to more expenses for them right? Any one who had half a brain would just dd an aboot from MDK onto their device and hard brick it and since they technically were flashing an unmodified stock factory signed partition they wouldn't be in the wrong doing so. That is to say Verizon can't blame you for bricking due to trying to run custom software.
If we had an unlocked bootloader there would be less bricks because we'd have more freedom to be able to bring devices "back to life". Qhsusb_dload wouldn't be an issue if secure boot and Knox didn't have to be there as royally PIA roadblocks.
This is all about Verizon wanting more money and overcharging for devices and Samsung could care less because they get more money out of the deal as well. Sorry I just hate when people defend carriers and their "developer devices". If you think about it, the VZW developer edition S4 is no different than The i9505 or S4's on any other carrier not named Verizon or AT&T.

You can brick an S4 with the locked BL? I've seen MANY people brick devices with unlocked BLs.
You also have to realize that others manufacturers are now starting to offer dev editions like motorola.
For some reason the s4 has more drama about it than the moto x.

I haven't seen that many devices with unlocked bootloaders bricked.
I have seen plenty with locked bootloaders bricked.
On the other hand, I paid retail for my phone. Once out of contract the difference between developer and non-developer is nothing except a locked bootloader.
Once the device is completely paid for, then what is precluding, treating a device like a developer device when asked?

You can easily brick a device with a locked BL. With root and adb shell and/or terminal. dd'ing aboot from MDK on any build after MDK will leave you in qhsusb_dload mode ( hard-bricked on the s4, other devices can still recover from qhsusb/qdl dload mode though). Recovery from qhsusb_dload on a locked BL is still doable but difficult without JTAG. Most people who think they've bricked their device haven't actually bricked their device.

Good information here. Also, if you are using a tool like Heimdall, if you flash anything signed (TZ for example) to SBL1 (for example), because the signature is still correct it will flash right over it. Meaning if you flash anything over SBL1, RPM, or ABOOT you are done. That's how I permabricked my device. Especially RPM and SBL1. Especially especially especially a couple more times RPM.

I don't understand why in the hell Verizon and Samsung think they can sell a $650 dollar unsubsidized developer edition device at the same price they sell the retail locked down unsubsidized GS4. T-mobile, the international edition and other carriers offer a retail GS4 that does the same thing as the developer edition GS4 and they offer it with a 2 year agreement so its also at a lower cost. Basically, what I don't understand is who the hell does Verizon think they are? I intentionally help unlock tethering on all devices I can just because they piss me off.

Here's an avenue that could possibly be pursued - forward a copy of the petition to the Federal Trade Commission for their input. Put it as a restraint of trade issue and you might get somewhere. If HTC/Samsung/LG phones are being unlocked, then it stands to reason that Verizon is keeping Motorola on a short leash and interfering with consumers rights.
I have participated in the soaks tests and it seems to me they do it more as a formality rather than caring on input. I say what I think there but I never see any changes that come from that input. It seems the soaks are released whether there are problems with them or not.
I can see why some would take a realistic view. Now if the deal for Google to buy Motorola gets approved I expect we will see some good changes. I am still hoping that makes it through. So I would say I am cautiously optimistic. Maybe the petition will help too though I expect the deal they have with Verizon might get in the way.

Sorry for oot (rather than i make a new thread),but i really need your input about rezound.
I'm planning to have one,but i have a little doubt on it.
I know that rezound has a high clock cpu but it is a bit outdated than S4 or omap 4460,will this perform well until years ahead?
I read somewhere in this forum that developers are leaving,is that true? (i'm a flashaholic)
Since cdma operator is cheaper than gsm,and i have not much option to choose a good cdma/global phone in here,so what do you guys thinking?

There are Sense 3.6 roms/ Sense 4.0 roms, a MIUI rom, and ROMs that attempt to de-sense as best they can and use Apex for an AOSP feel.
While it is true that we don't have many devs left, HTC should release the ICS kernel source and rumor has it that AOSP/AOKP/CM9 could get RIL working with the kernel source. I shouldn't get your hopes up too much for that happening though because the one person who said he would do that got mad and left. Whether he decides to release it is up to him.
I preordered it. I got my rezoned on my sisters line because she didn't order a phone for 2 years (serious). My line has been free since March. I'll keep which ever one I like more but if the GS3 battery is way better that will be enough.
I may. So much infighting, off topic, and red hot developer on developer action here, with few updates on the few remaining roms.
Then there's all the developers being pushed away by the negativity too.
I'm not saying it won't be any different on the other phones, but it should have a really big following.
I was hoping for CM9 months ago, to finally get all of my devices on one ROM, but that looks like it won't happen anytime soon.
I can afford it these days.
Love my Rezound though.

Yea not to mention our cdma phones' gsm international counterparts always sell for higher since there is a greater, international demand for them and they are not locked to the united states only for the most part. Anyone thinking they'll get more than $500 for this phone is dreaming. I don't care if its mint or unopened, I'd still rather get it from my initial order than second hand if I'm going to spend that money.

Exactly, not worth it unless they offered a discount in service.
No amazing value there. No incentives for me to port out my 2 AT&T HTC ONEs from Straight Talk. Which is too bad because I'm willing to pay a bit extra for LTE service, but with AT&T's current rate plans I'm better off just keeping my phone with Straight Talk.

glad tmoblie is building 2 new towers in my area should really improve service here ... if so i might be moving over ... this plan is a complete joke
Honestly it seems like there are monthly meetings at AT&T where the agenda is "how can we screw our customers next?"

True...but with the amount of consumers who just want a phone without having to pay anything up front let alone $200 up front and don't really pay attention to details....Next will most likely do well.
It's sad

This would be OK for someone who wants a new device and do not have current eligibility for an upgrade. Of course you probably can only do this at the time of the contract renewal.
I mean this, if you are willing to pay full price anyway, why not pay interest free payments? But, if you are eligible for an upgrade then this makes no sense. And I don't mean HTC Sense.

I'm sorry but this is so foolish. We have four phones on our plan, two of them are the $10 options and they never upgrade their phones that basically gives me the option to buy a new phone every 8 months.
The only people I see buying into this are wealthy people, with bad math skills, that have teenaged children complaining for the newest phone.
Haha amazing value. That's gotta be sarcasm?
Sent from my HTC One using xda premium
No, it's not an amazing value. It would be an amazing value ONLY IF the phone service prices dropped. The phone services have a $20 subsidy built in already, so essentially you're paying twice for the subsidy. What a joke AT&T. Only stupid customers will fall for this.

Do you guys know what a self-fulfilling prophecy is? Honestly, I think it will happen, ive learned a lot just so I can try to help solve this too. The more negative people are about it though the less likely people will be to discuss it or be motivated to do it.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
Realistically the only people "qualified" to answer this question would be a developer working on this. Anything a normal user says is pure speculation.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 2
I don't mind speculation.
If enough of us wish for it to happen than maybe it will (remember Peter Pan?)
There's a way around everything.
Self fulfilling prophecy theory is lame. Not only is it fake but a lazy way to think. The only ones who can figure it out are the ones trying to hack it. The rest of the people can think whatever they want. They have no impact on it happening or not.
With that said I do not believe this will be unlocked. The beauty of design in this thing limits the amount of roads one can take to attack it. Its never been cracked and its been tried for well over a year spanning multiple devices. We only had a *unlock* because of leaked info. That's it. If that didn't happen we would all have nothing.
Sent from my SPH-L720 using xda app-developers app
I am optimistic but honestly I will likely be on the next device GN3 or something else long before it happens. Yet I still offered up my money to help motivate those who can get it done.
Odds Key Lime Pie for S4 happens?
As a previous Verizon user, I don't see this being unlocked.. Sorry
Not holding my breath. Anyone like to purchase a brand new GS4? I will never buy another phone before doing some homework. Good luck to those trying.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda premium
The real question isn't will it be unlocked (it won't be). It's will a leaked unlocked bootloader become available.
This is basically bad new for anyone wanting a phone with SDcard support and an unlocked boot loader in the future on VZW or AT&T. Samsung is the only SD option now... And it looks like they've got this boot loader thing locked down (no pun intended), at least when it comes up Qualcomm. If the Note 3 uses an s800, I don't see why the boot loader situation would be any different from the S4 and S4 active...

Vote with your goddamned wallets!
I hate to also be the voice of reason but the sad reality is that this booting processes is sealed up tight and it's all Verizon's doing. I'm here for my room mate who hates his stock S4 with a passion but absolutely loves my CM10.x+OC S4...I just switched from Sprint to T-Mobile, for networks. I considered Verizon and ATT but having had friends with Verizon phones (Motos especially) over the past few years I knew that it was nearly pointless, save for a leaked engineering/unlocked signed bootloader or 1 chance at an exploit on release-day firmware before it was sealed up tight and likely for good.
It's not that I have no hope, there's always a chance and there is always a way...but with each successive breach of such a system the next iteration becomes exponentially more difficult to overcome.
I stuck with Sprint's haggard network for years because I knew they didn't give phone hackers a hard time. I switched to T-Mobile because I did my research and found the same. HTC capitulated on their new locked and encryption signed bootloaders after the EVO3D debacle a few years back.
As for my new Samsung Galaxy S4? I had my phone for 20 minutes before I flashed a custom recovery and had a CM10.1 nightly running with a custom 2.2ghz OC kernel that comes with tons of governors, tons of IO schedulers...on light use with screen turned down low, OC'd to 135mhz/2.1ghz I can get almost 2 days out of my phone and it is smooth as effing silk like no phone I've ever seen...and I've had no wakelock problems.
This phone screams.
Am I bragging? Sure...but not to hurt your feelings. I'm sick of companies acting like THEY own the computer that YOU bought for YOUR pocket. I'm bragging to enrage you.
Vote with your goddamned wallets. I did when HTC wouldn't unload their bootlockers (lol), and Samsung will forever have my business unless they start that crap too (or their phones start to suck)....same goes for T-Mobile. (Protip: stick to the underdogs. You get far better customer service and far more leeway...when you are #1 and #2 you appear to not need to try anymore and treating your customers like idiot children and criminals is somehow acceptable).
This isn't Samsung's doing...ask any Sprint, T-Mobile or international model owners.
Vote with your goddamned wallets.
I wish the best to you my brethren. Good luck and happy hacking.
well...

True, but sometimes the trip the way around is so long, almost nobody will care in the end.
So here is the long story short, I bought a Verizon lg g2 back in November 2013. 4 days ago my phone stopped picking up service after I put my sim back in it from the gs3 (my g2 had died that's why I switched to my gs3). I called Verizon to see what was going on, they told me they didn't know. They asked where did I purchase the phone I told them and then they said that the phone was reported stolen on a fraudulent account. So my Question is is there any place I can sell my phone to try to get something back for it?

You can try selling it for parts? What color is it?

What's a good price to list it for, mint condition?

You might want to try unlocking it and use another carrier. Who ever sold you was probably doing insurance fraud. But usually when a phone is locked like that its only locked to the carrier. I had a S4 locked for tmobile. I unlocked it and used ATT . couldnt use tmobile no more

Thank you for the tip I just remembered that the Verizon g2 is unlocked default. I'm going to try a friends Tmobile sim and see if it works. I don't know what that person was doing but sounds like that is what they could of been doing because he had a lot of g2 and was selling them cheap. He is still active on swappa too.

Yeah just remembered now that verizons phones are global unlocked now lol. Remember that Verizon model works with tmobile's LTE and have wifi calling with a tmobile rom
Have you relayed this info to Swappa? I know they can't do much to help you, but hopefully they can at least take a hard look at the seller.

I've tried by emailing them and they just suggested to talk to the seller, another swappa mod told me to fill out the required form in order to he helped. I honestly am not satisfied with how swappa treated me and will not be buying from there again.
EDIT: Success! The phone works perfectly on T-Mobile. Calls, SMS & Data even though I was on Edge it worked.

Does Swappa not use PayPal? It seems like there would be more protection against crap like this.

If this guy knowingly sold you a phone he has or had reported stolen then you do have a solid leg to stand on. I would begin with you local law enforcement. IMEI numbers, IP Addresses and subpoenas to devuldge info on the Swappa users account will gain them all the info they need to proceed with filing charges. What's even better is I'm assuming most likely the phone you bought came from out of state so crossing a state line now opens the door for federal statutes. You might be surprised how willing and eager your local law enforcement might be to handle this for you, especially if you have your ducks in a row and necessary info on hand prior to your meeting with them.

What is the name of the seller on Swappa? My brother is going to be buying a Verizon G2 from the site, will tell him to avoid the seller. Thanks!

Did you take the phone to Verizon to have it verified and activated on your account? Sellers name?

Not good. That seller is very very active on Swappa. Whenever I buy on there I take my phone to Verizon to have it activated and verified.

Swappa checks all of the IMEI's to make sure they're clean as well, but from what Krazie1 is saying it sounds like the phone he bought was reported after he bought and activated it. Even Verizon would have told him it was clean.

Yah, I'm very well aware that Swappa checks the imei# for each listing. Plus, I understand what krazie1 has stated about the phone being reported stolen. I'm not doubting the phone was reported stolen. I'm just saying that, if you just slip your SIM card into the phone that's not yours I'd feel there's greater risk then if you take it to Verizon. I know I'd have a better chance of having the situation resolved if I took my phone to them. Especially, after it was reported stolen well over thirty days. The part that is unsettling to me is that the phone was new. I sell and buy often on Swappa so I'm not happy to hear about krazie1's situation. The seller has sold over a hundred phones. I feel, if I went to Verizon, I'd keep bugging them because of the situation. If I just slipped my SIM card in then I'd feel like I didn't have a chance. That's just my thoughts.

Gotcha -- you're saying that if they are the ones who give the all clear you have a leg to stand on later if the IMEI gets blocked. That makes sense.

Yep, exactly. I wish there was a sensible way to make the situation right. Logotech_cell should step up and resolve the issue. If he doesn't, Swappa should ban him!
