[Q] Automatically enable/disable 3g data connection on dual sim phone - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
principally to save battery charge, i need to find an application or a method that automatically shut down data connection when i lock the screen and resume it when i unlock the screen.
I've tried many of the most popular software that do this, but, with dual sim phone, they are able to shut down data connection but not to startup.
Please can you help me?
Thank you.
Bye

This works for me with SIM in slot #1 : Install Xposed framework and gravitybox http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2316070
Follow the instructions carefully to install Xposed and Gravitybox on your device.
Then go to Gravitybox settings > phone tweaks > Smart radio > turn ON > Normal network GSM/WCDMA Auto (2G/3G) > Power saving GSM (2G) > Network mode change delay 5s > When screen turns off : tick > delayed powersave 5m or higher [ 0 doen's t work for me ] >Ignore while locked NOT ticked.
Have tried many many apps but only this one works , dunno about battery time yet , still testing

I have developed a tasker plugin specific to dual sim phones with mediatek chips.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=pt.joaormf.mtkcontrol

I cant get a demanded behavior on this with my 4g, my Network is running on 2600 MHz and i can't choose any option from Smart radio with it working properly, i get at most 3g Network on LTE (GSM) setting, on other two i have a E indicator, from settings(Android settings) it is working well i can switch between 2G->3G->4G am i miss something or it is just not possible to do at all for me?

Hi,
I can't promise on specific devices compatibility first and mainly because I don't have those devices to test.
And once more Google changed the things that make the dual sim work on Android 6. This means that I have to once again reverse engineer some of the code for a few dual sim phones (few phones use stock Android features to manage dual sim - in fact they were almost non existent until 5.1), and to do that I need reliable source code for the ROM.
This to explain that the backlog of versions that I have to bring support to is increasing more rapidly than I would imagine a year ago. And with more and more dual sim phones being lunched it will get worst
Sorry for the issue.
Thanks

3g battery drain issues

My current combination of cyanogenmatt, sonygenmod with fserve kernel has decent battery but 3g seems to remove every bit of juice in any rom..was wondering if by any way 3g drain could be removed at least slightly reduced
Thanks in advance !

3G is a battery eater, that's a given in any smartphone. Your options are:
- turn data off when you're not using;
- use only 2G unless you're downloading; or
- get a battery-saving app from Market to smartly turn data on and off in intervals
I use JuiceDefender to turn 3g off when I lock my phone
okay guys!!understood ther can be no magical way except using a battery saving app thanks for your reply!
I had the same problem but found some interesting tips in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1189755
The specific one that I think applies to this matter is this one
2. Use "GSM auto (PRL) to save more juice while still connecting through 3G
- in the phone setting>wireless and network>MobileNetwork>NetworkMode
we are only allow to choose GSM only/ WCDMA / Auto between two
- but if you use type "*#*#4636#*#*" to phone Information, you can choose more type of networkmode. It is claimed that choose "GSM auto (PRL)" allow you to save more battery (cell standby) while allow you to connect to 3G network.
- This might somehow depend on your carrier / provider
- Please provide feedback on this. THanks

It really worked for me: went from 7-8 hs of battery life to 14-16 hs
Does "*#*#4636#*#*" work on Optimus one? I entered with dial pad but nothing happen.

correction: the key sequence does work to enter the testing menus. My bad.
the key combination worked for me.:good:
You might want to explore 3GBattery which toggle data in a set interval to extend battery.

[Q] App to Turn off 3G/EDGE

Hello Guys,
I made my jump into the world of Android with the SGS2. I love it to the core with the few days I have played with it. I am on the lookout for some good 3G/2G/EDGE turn off apps that let me turn off my data usage since I am on a data limit plan. I know that I can disable data from going into wireless & networks > Mobile Networks> uncheck use packet data. But I am looking for some sort of a widget app on the home screen that turn off/on the data with one click.
I would appreciate if you guys could point me to some good apps that are known to work on SGS2.
Thanks
I'm haven't looked into any Apps that do that, but if you flash to a custom ROM like UnNamed, there is a data toggle button on the drop down menu.

There is a lot of apps that u can download in android market, but it will be useless if right now u'r running default Original ROM.
Apps that you already download from android market will be useless, i recommended that u flash default ROM and use Custom ROM.
Right now i'm running SG2 with Cyanogen and it had option to choose 2G or 3G data.
i hope this information can help you
Thanks.
Thank you guys!!! You guys are just awesome..I will look into flashing some custom ROM's..The more I delve into Android the more I am in love with it.

it has a toggle to switch the data on/off, not 2g to 3g.
Switching from 3g to 2g will save battery correct? I wonder why there isn't a default way to do that like on the iphone.

My mistake, it is just for the data itself.
So far I have tried all unamed, perception, cognition, serendipity and c7... out of which all stock based rom do not allow 3g/2g switch only c7 does... but with c7 you loose some functionality like motion sensing, slide to call in contacts etc..

High Battery usage after fully charging the phone

I've noticed high battery usage (Kernel mostly) after fully charging the phone, have you noticed similar behavior?.
I've notice the process "qcom_rx_wakelock" is using a lot of CPU power and the phone has been idle since the last reboot

I guess our kernel filters set to "CAF defaults". That "qcom_rx_wakelock" (wifi configuration file) absolutely destroys the battery on most networks a specially through wifi network.
Go to WiFi>>>Advanced>>> activate Wi-Fi optimization.
and Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep "always"
And again I recommending you to activate Stamina.

My Way of Turning Cell Radio off When Wifi Connected

I'm sure this has been done with Tasker etc, but here is my way of turning off the cell radio when connected to my home wifi. Saw just shy of 6 hours screen on time today for the first time so thought I'd share.
When connected to home/work wifi, it turns off the cell radio, thereby relying on Wifi for Project Fi calls and texts. When leaving home/work wifi range, cell radio is re-enabled.
Download and install Automate: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.llamalab.automate&hl=en
Open it and click on the people icon on the top right corner of the app. Search Project Fi Airplane Mode. This is my "flow", download it then back out to the main screen.
Click "Project Fi Home Wifi=Airplane Mode". Click the pen icon on top, then Flowchart. Here we will change it from my network to yours. Click on the "when wifi connected" box. When you're connected to your home or work wifi network, select pick a network box and select it. Click done Click check mark on top. Install the permissions listed on this screen. Click start. Enjoy some nice battery savings Project Fi users!
I see, this app uses electrical grid to explain your automation, i use tasker but it requires secure settings to enable flight mode etc. Which has been broken since android L i believe, will try this app as it has the fucntions required

The Airplane Radios feature is still working perfectly from secure settings. I'm using it right now and it's working nicely! The only issue with it atm has been that, like @inzandity stated, Secure Settings does not cooperate with Systemless root, but that's really no big deal if you dont care much for Android Pay.

I want to play around more with this as I like the interface. The only problem I'm having is, currently I'm using phhusson's superuser and it doesn't seem to be getting the su request from Automate. Up until now, I've used Tasker and Secure Settings to do the same and they work fine.
Tasker will do that, GravityBox will do it too, and so will multiple IFTT type apps. Not sure there is much new here.

I'm aware of Tasker + Secure Settings, but where is this in GravityBox? I don't see anything in Smart Radio that shuts off the radio completely when connected to wifi. Also curious which apps in particular do this.

Yes, Smart Radio will not turn off the radio completely, but you can set it to 2G mode where the power consumption drops drastically relative to LTE. Now that you have pointed this out, why would you want to shut off the radio completely when connected to WiFi? That means that you loose phone functionality, and cannot receive or make phone calls.
As for apps that do this https://ifttt.com/ should work, at least before Marshmallow where Google clamped down on some settings adjustments.

No phone functionality is lost that I'm aware of, since Project Fi calls and texts will be routed through the wifi connection.

Got it, I did not read your OP in sufficient detail. For those that have Project Fi this could be value added. In my experience the 2G radio draws negligible power (standby time in 2G of a phone with a 3000mAh battery will be measured in weeks with the screen off) so the difference between fully off, and 2G only (or even 3G only) will be minor with respect to SOT, which will be dominated by the screen and wifi anyway.

I think that's right. 2g uses very little power, unless you are in a building or house that has low signal. I work in GM factory where I can barely pull 2g data.
Is there any way you could update this to include Bluetooth turning on after airplane mode is activated in addition to wifi, that way my smart watch can always stay connected too. Either way thanks for the post, it works great!

Stopping all phone transmissins, bluetooth, wifi, etc

Which of these can be stopped and totally disabled never to work again on an older phone,, and which can be stopped by flashing the rom, and which can be stopped at the software level using a root, . . Bluetooth, wifi, emergency 911, cell tower broadcast, GPS, . . and which ones can not be stopped, crippled, disabled if any. Ths can not have even the slightest transmission possibilities. Just curious which one can be stopped at root level, and which can be stopped by flashing the rom

Thats not secure enough, this is for a device in which at its core security is its utmost, I once had wifi off, bluetooth off, and in airplane mode, and while it was sitting on the table made a sound, i said "what was that", looked, and a google account had in the background turned on my wifi, The hardware itself must be disabled, preferably through a rom flash, and basic linux kernal set up with no programming for data transmission hardware installed, hence I would like to know what can be disabled through rooting, and which through flashing,

At the kernals most core, These are the rules. ( 1 ) cannot transmit data, does not know how, Can not be done ( 2 ) Only the user can access the program.
These rules can not be broke. I believe this Linux, open source, kernel can be built

Their phones they have radios .. it's not that hard to flash a rom with no radio support
you never mention what device it's even for
Pick a phone
go to that section
see if theirs a custom rom and kernel for it
download it and alter the zip to remove the drivers
