Rooting guide for the new 14.2.A.1.136 firmware:
This will void your warranty, don't flash without a full battery or if there is a black cat near by. If this bricks your Z-Ultra I blame the Waikato Draught
Upgrading from .290 already rooted Unlocked BL Working
Flash ftf and follow Coming from stock 14.2.A.1.136 with unlocked BL
Path 1. Coming from stock 14.2.A.1.136 with unlocked BL Tested as working

Copy SuperSU to SD card of phone
Flash @jackie099's recovery kernel from flashtool (boot into fastboot mode)
Boot into recovery
Flash SuperSU update from recovery
Re-boot
Path 2. Coming from stock 14.2.A.1.136 with unlocked BL Tested as working

Download XZDualRecovery kernel with recovery http://nut.xperia-files.com/downloa...kZHVhbHJlY292ZXJ5Mi43LjgwLUJFVEEuZmxhc2hhYmxl
Download @Chainfire's SuperSU http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu

Flash XZDualRecovery from recovery
Flash SuperSU update from recovery
Re-boot
If you only have partial root then change /sys/kernel/security/sony_ric/enable (from '1' to '0')
Coming from stock 14.2.A.1.136 or 14.2.A.0.290 with locked BL
Get a rooted .290 install then continue from below "Upgrading from .290 already rooted Locked BL"
To get root on .290 follow below or [NUT]'s/jackie's stock .290 for locked BL
Flash [NUT]'s .532 http://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/dl/?id=3442 (read guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2593918)
skip setup
settings
- enable dev settings
- enable usb debuging
Root with this tool: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460
- Option 0
Run http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2426739 to get recovery
Download DoggRom for C6833
Download latest ZU-lockeddualrecovery2.7.xx-BETA.flashable.zip
Save both to SD card
Download .136 ftf for your Ultra - Save in flashtool firmware folder
Now comes the tricky bit
Charge phone - I used 40% of the battery while doing this
Reboot to recovery
Wipe Data
Flash a stock based rom (DoggRom for c6833 or [NUT]'s etc) from recovery - DON'T REBOOT
Flash ZU-lockeddualrecovery2.7.xx-BETA.flashable.zip from recovery
POWER OFF the phone - don't reboot
Start flashtool
Select flash
Select Flashmode
Select the .290 ftf or .136 ftf
[Top Box] Uncheck everything
To make sure that there are no mismatch issues like on the Z1 that has lead to DEAD devices
[Middle Box] Check excludes for system only. We may need at least all of these: KERNEL, ELABEL, BOOTBUNDLE, AND BASEBAND
Flash
Reboot phone when done
Run XZDualRecovery 2.7.xx from the pc to get recovery if needed
Upgrading from .290 already rooted Locked BL Should be working
The easiest way ATM is to use [NUT]'s 136 ROM ( testing stages):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2631768
Thankyou to these good folk.
With out your work all of this would be most difficult.
@jackie099 and @[NUT] for the base of the rooting guide for .290 on locked BL
@chemcup for the FTF
@ChillyChan & @[NUT] & @jackie099 for the recoveries and kernels
@abuihsan for the ric tip
many more as well...
Please feel free to add tips to this guide, and I'll keep it updated.

Ihaven't read that thread, got a link?
The locked BL instructions are more or less the same as [NUT]'s for the .290 except for the extra steps as we don't have a rooted rom yet, or were you talking about the first instructions?
The instructions are very detailed to help reduce questions...
On unlocked bootloader Dual-Kernel not working properly. This kernel is for 290 firmware only.
To have ROOT need to flash back kernel only from 136 firmware by FlashTool

working on it. Thought I had it, but it boots in like 4 seconds. then goes black, flashes my bootlogo, then takes about 10 seconds to boot, and displays a black screen. When i sleep it, and then unlock it it works fine. google services reports an error, but clearing app data fixed that. But then also getting reboots... I think there is a subtle kernel difference as when i flashed the FTF it works fine. flashing .290 kernel does the same thing. random reboots...
I think I need a break. 3 days without sleep and the pills are wearing off i think.
---------- Post added at 10:32 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:27 AM ----------
I have noticed that the touch vibrations are less intensive. That the screen is snappier.. I don't think its a sensitivity issue as changing the sensitivity in the ROM still make it snappier, but lessens the sensitivity. So not sure what Sony did there. But I like it.
(not that this is me currently not using a screen protector on my brand new unit)
There are a few more apps included but thats probably an FTF issue. i.e. European apps.

Please show me where I can down C6802 the ROM FTF !
Worked for me
Thanks for the guide!.
After following the instructions my phone is now working fine, including wifi, but system read/write only works one minute after it boots so xposed doesnt work either. im an idiot that forgot to install the apk for xperia devices using 4.3 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48484642&postcount=6846). I read the XZDualRecovery thread and aparently this was fixed in beta 2.7.80, the same one posted here, but for me it didnt do the trick.Im just posting this here so other people are aware that there might be problems with it, after all its a wip.. Now everything its working fine, Thanks again
(Using a c6802 with an unlocked bootloader, came from a c6802 stock .290, flashed .136 c6833 ftf from germany)

I've got a problem, but I'm not sure if it's been addressed anywhere else on here, I've searched through several pages. I've found a situation that was similar, but not the same. So I'm putting it out there, and hoping someone will solve it:
I've got a Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman (WT19i)
I rooted my phone, unlocked it's bootloader, and flashed a ROM; everything went well until it rebooted. Now I'm stuck at the point where the "Sony Ericsson" logo is shown, i've been stuck there for almost 30 minutes now.
Any help possible? Any at ALL would be MUCH appreciated.

What ROM are you trying to flash on your phone?
Did you checked first if the Bootloader was actually unlocked?
Did you flash a custom kernel thru fastboot?
Custom ROM needs custom kernel.

I was trying to flash HYBROM.
Bootloader was unlocked for sure as I had installed Coconut previously, which also requires bootloader unlock.
No worries though; i solved my problem. I flashed an older firmware, along with a bootload relocker, with Flashtool. Now my phone has switched on, to my stock ROM. Still no clue how to flash hybrom ROM as it caused the same problem even after wiping dalvik cache and all other data (which was the solution provided by dev)

check first page of hybrom thread
Installation instructions
Needs unlocked bootloader
(actually hybrom does not contain a boot image. Thus, when you install hybrom you don't mess with your boot image at all.BUT recovery from nAa is installed in /system and while system is formated during the installation of hybrom, recovery messes with it self. That's why unlocked bootloader and a custom kernel with recovery is necessary for now to install hybrom)

I did not deny that a custom kernel is needed, I wanted to know how to flash/use a custom kernel?
To flash a custom kernel you need to have flashtool (sticky thread on the dev section) so:
1.- you download the custom kernel (it is a boot.img file)
2.- open flashtool
3.- connect your phone to your computer while the phone its off and you are holding the volume up key without releasing it the notification led should turn on blue.
4.- if the phone it's not recognized go to the flashtool folder and install the drivers located on the drivers folder once it is done repeat step 3 and it should be recognized.
5.- once your device it's connected click the thunderbolt icon on flashtool in the new screen select fastboot mode and continue.
6.- in the new screen click on select kernel to flash and browse to the boot.img you downloaded.
7.- check the flashtool log to make sure everything is fine if it is you are good to go.
Hope it helps.

Depending on the ROM, you want to install, you need correct kernel.
CM ROMs work only with FXP kernels, included in their topic.
MIUI ROMs have only specific kernels also, included in their topic.
Stock-based ROMs(XROM, Hybrom) work with Rage Kernel, X Kernel, bbooff's kernel, all these are in Development section, just search.
Glad to be helpful anything else just let us know.
Thanks very much!
I have a live with walkman from 3 etwork. the bootloader is locked. can I still flash hybrom 16 through CWM?
check service menu,
confirm if bootloader can be unlocked.
it should state "bootloader unlock allowed : yes".
after unlocking bootloader then there will be no problem installing hybrom
check this thread for more info about unlocking bootloader.

Fantastic How'd you flash it? same as hybrom? (Unlock bootloader then flash?)
Since i see many people having problems with installing cm9 on neo v, i've decided to help them
If you're a noob, have a look at this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1409269
If you're not a noob, proceed with the steps confirming that you have performed the steps
PLEASE FOLLOW THE STEPS CAREFULLY
THE REFERENCE LINKS GIVEN ARE ONLY MEANT FOR READING AND INFORMATION PLEASE DONT FOLLOW THEIR INSTRUCTIONS TO DO SOMETHING TO YOUR PHONE.
Step 1: PREPARE YOUR COMPUTER
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Khrxo0-NieM
it will explain a lot please watch it, download links are below
thanks for the video....
Downloads:
1)Android SDK- http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
2)ADB Drivers- http://www.mediafire.com/?6u1zl54w3jnvvax (just open the .cat files(x86/x64) and the drivers will be installed )
3)After watching the video, download (http://www.mediafire.com/?4qoenin9cjn7s7i) fastboot and place(copy paste) the 3 files in your android sdk directory>platform-tools(for me its C:\androidSDK\platform-tools)
if platform tools is not present, please follow the video again you have to instll "tools" package in SDK.
4)Flashtool- http://androxyde.github.com/ -go to the installation tab and download it (130 mb)
Step 2: ROOT THE PHONE
If you have no idea about rooting, have a look at this http://droidlessons.com/what-is-rooting-on-android-the-advantages-and-disadvantages/
How to know that you are rooted-lookout for "superuser" app in app drawer, if found, you have rooted your phone.
if you are on official ICS 4.0.3 ,
1)[ requirements ]

2)[ READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY! ]
This script will:
root ur device using "andorid emulator" trick
install Busybox (1.18.4)
install SU files (ICS specific)
do some checks for free space, tmp directory (will remove Google Maps if required)
Before u begin:
make sure u have installed adb drivers for ur device
enable "USB DEBUGGING" - from (Menu\Settings\Developer Options\Development)
enable "UNKNOWN SOURCES" - from (Menu\Settings\Security)
[OPTIONAL] increase screen timeout to 10 minutes
connect USB cable to PHONE and then connect to PC
skip "PC Companion Software" prompt on device
3)[ WARNING ]
make sure that no other adb server is running in background (e.g.: Flashtool, PCC, SEUS) and disable any antivirus
4)[ how to install? ]
Connect your phone in MSC (mass storage mode) mode(SD card can be viewed on PC)

If you're on Official ICS 4.0.4 ,
1)Make sure that you have flashtool installed and that you're on official ICS 4.0.4
2)You'll have to flash baseband of 4.0.3
a)Download the 4.0.3 baseband - http://www.mediafire.com/?gwe739kn5mcx56t and place the .ftf file in C:\Flashtool\firmwares

5)Enjoy the rooted phone!!!!
My thanks to doomlord and madfysh
IMPORTANT !!!!!!
ONCE ROOTED,
Download https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup&hl=en and backup all your apps(on SD card)
Step 3(next step) of this post will reset(factory reset) your phone.
BACKUP ALL YOUR CONTACTS AND CALENDER ON GOOGLE
BACKUP ALL YOUR MESSAGES AND IMPORTANT STUFF !!
MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR SD CARD ON PC FOR SAFETY (THIS WILL BE DONE AFTER ALL BACKUPS ARE DONE I.E. LAST BACKUP)
Step 3: UNLOCK BOOTLOADER
If you have no idea about this, read this
Why exactly is this a big deal? For the general population, this doesn’t matter. However, for the modding community, locked bootloaders are simply a pain. When the bootloader is locked, certain portions of the device are unable to be customized such as recoveries or kernels. A lot of the time, when rooting a device, the first step requires the bootloader to be unlocked or bypassed. So, depending on the device in question and the will of the developer, creative Android hacking has allowed some devices with locked bootloaders to run custom ROMs. Generally, these devices aren’t as stable as they could be if the device was able to be completely customized from the ground up.
1) http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/ and follow the steps carefully ( skip step 13, we've already done that )
IF YOU GET STUCK ON STEP 14,DO THIS
to navigate to android SDK folder, use this command(without quotes)
"cd location_of_your_android_SDK\platform-tools"
for me, it was - "C:\androidSDK\platform-tools"
2)If you followed the rules, you will have an unlocked bootloader
3)Yipeeee !!!
4)Dont worry about your apps, they're still on your SD card
5)Restore only the apps which are very important and you cant live without them for a day..
Step 4: INSTALLING CWM(CLOCK WORK MOD / RECOVERY)
if you dont know what cwm is, just read but dont follow the steps to install it
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile...-and-how-to-use-it-on-android-complete-guide/
1) http://www.mediafire.com/?73xv18tht0e8zt4 download cwm
2)Connect your phone in MSC (mass storage mode) mode and wait until SD card available to PC
3)increase your display time out to 2 minutes
4)Enable USB debugging and allow 3rd party/unknown sources
5)open the downloaded folder(extract first)
6)Run install-cwm1.cmd
7)sit back and enjoy!!!
8)once finished, you'll have cwm installed!!!!
9)to check if you have cwm, turn off phone
10)turn on and when sony logo appears, repeatedly press vol down button until you reach a blue colored menu, if successful, cwm is installed properly!! if not, please comment or reinstall it.
11)navigation in cwm-
go up-vol up
go down-vol down
select option-home button
previous menu-back button
thanks siddharthsure93
Step 5: TAKING A NANDROID BACKUP
if you have no idea about this, read this
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/38468-nandroid-backup-what-is-it-and-did-i-need-it/
make sure that your sd card has at least 1gb free space and you have 50% battery charge
1)Hoping that you have cwm installed, turn off phone
2)Enter cwm by repeatedly press vol down button when sony logo appears
3)go to "backup and restore"
4)select "backup"
5)wait for 10-15 minutes till your phone is backuped
6)now you have a copy of your current phone and rom memory
we do this to restore phone if something goes wrong
NOW YOU HAVE PREPARED YOUR PHONE TO GET CM9 OR ANY FU*KIN ROM !!! :good::good:
IF I GO WRONG SOMEWHERE, PLEASE CORRECT ME WE ALL LEARN FROM OUR MISTAKES.
PLEASE PRESS THE THANKS BUTTON IF I HELPED YOU

If i directly flash in JB Kernel and rom, will I be able to have root permissions? Do i even need to care about my .62 firmware if i want to go into CM10?
What should i do? Thanks!

You will need to root your phone first. Installing a custom ROM won't automatically give you root acces. In fact, I don't think you will be able to install a custom ROM without ClockWork Mod Recovery which needs root access first. Follow Sony's own rooting guide here: http://talk.sonymobile.com/thread/41119?start=0&tstart=0. Then install X-Parts from the Play Store to get CWM.
Once you have CWM you can install any appropriate custom ROM you like.
Oh is that gonna be painful
Iv unlocked bootloaded with .62 firmware
So i cant get to official ics and stucked with the .62, flashing an older firmware for the root is risky? After that i have to go back to .62 again?
so confused

Use flash tool and an ftf file to update to ICS. You can go with 0.587 version for example.
After update as you are on unlocked bootloader you should flash a custom ICS kernel like suave, night elf or any other ICS compatible. This will give you root and cwm.
Look at the stickys. You will find all you need.

You can always relock the bootloader (don't know what method you used to unlock, so can't advise on how to relock - I only know how if unlocking was done through Sony). Update the firnware to stock Sony ICS using Sony's PC Companion. Then root it using Sony's rooting guide. After rooting you can unlock the bootloader again. Install X-Parts and CWM. Then try out the custom ROMs+kernels to your heart's content.

On the other hand, unlocking via official method gives you an easy option to Relock bl via flashtool!
There's a thread by Blagus on how to do that!
Btw even Relocking via setool is an option for unofficially unlocked bl users!
So there's always an option!

If this is what you're talking about, I've read it. But will it allow me to use the PC Companion and receive updates(Although I hardly feel there's going to be more than 1 update)/ Go back to official Sony ROM?

Yes. That's the tutorial I'm talking about. I only mentioned what I did because I've done it before. After relocking use PC Companion to update your phone. Or the Sony phone repair program. I don't remember which. If you try both (like I did) one (or both) of them will work. But still you are out of warranty. You know that, don't you?

Basically its all about DRM loss. What do I exactly lose? Only trackid? I suppose the newer versions run on unlocked bootloaders as well.

I think you are right. It's basically about losing DRM. I don't know what it is and of what use it is. All I know is I've never missed it. If you are into trying out custom ROMs then unlocking the bootloader is a must because certain custom ROMs need custom kernels. To install custom kernels you must have an unlocked bootloader.
Thanks @[NUT] for finding the way of rooting 4.3 with locked BL. Since nobody makes one for Z Ultra, I will do it.
This is a flashable ROM extracted from stock 14.2.A.0.290 without ANY modification.
The only 2 things added are FULL ROOT and XZDualRecovery.
This method is copied and modified from @[NUT] 's Z1 ROM
Requirements:
Flashtool 0.9.13 by @Androxyde
XZDualRecovery 2.7.71 BETA or newer.
Current rooted FW version: 14.1.B.1.532 OR 14.1.B.2.257 (rooted).
note: 257 is not tested on Z Ultra yet.
In the following guide I suggest you use an external SDCard but that's just good practice, you can use your internal storage or even an USB OTG storage device in TWRP if you like to install, that's no problem!... If you are modding and the likes, best is to have an external sdcard, just for safeties sake.
C6802: How to update to 14.2.A.0.290:
This should work for C6833, too. But you will lose 4G.
WARNING:
As the 'update' part of this ROM package does not work yet:
THIS GUIDE WILL DESTROY ALL USERDATA!
For C6802: Download C6802_14.2.A.0.290.jackie099.flashable.zip (C6833_14.2.A.0.290.jackie099.flashable.zip if u have C6803)and C6802_14.2.A.0.290_Stripped.ftf, save them somewhere you remember;
Put 'C6802_14.2.A.0.290.jackie099.flashable.zip' on (the external) SDcard1;
Put 'C6802_14.2.A.0.290_Stripped.ftf' inside the Flashtool/firmwares folder;
Create a backup of your phone in CWM or TWRP and don't forget to backup the contents of 'SDCard0';
To prevent bootloops:
Flash XL39h-C6802_4.2.2-14.1.B.1.532.ftf firmware, please use the newest flashtool, or brick.
root it with Vroot, and install Supersu to replace vroot's permission manager.
Flash XZDualRecovery 2.7.71 (from PC)
In TWRP -> Wipe -> advanced Wipe Tick/Check:
Dalvik-Cache
System
Cache
Data
Internal Storage
Swipe to Right to do the factory reset
After that Click Format Data -> type yes
Flash 'C6802_14.2.A.0.290.jackie099.flashable.zip' or 'C6833_14.2.A.0.290.jackie099.flashable.zip' in TWRP
NOTE: do not reboot but go back to the main menu, then go to reboot->power off;
Flash everything in 'C6802_14.2.A.0.290_Stripped.ftf';
Now reboot to system.
Check Supersu, and u are rooted!
Hit Thanks or donate me if you think my work is useful for you!
Thank you for this! Much appreciated!
Just to let you know - both of your link (C6802_14.2.A.0.290_Stripped.ftf,) points to the wrong file.
I have been using NUT's 4.3 root guide for other Z-devices, but when trying with my Z Ultra it wouldn't work. I tried going from a rooted generic .532 to generic .290 created according to NUT's guide. I had success on Tablet Z and Z1 but not Z Ultra. I have a C6833.

After looking at XZDualRecovery 2.7.71 I think this will work
DONT TRY THIS AT HOME KIDS
1/ flash either my BE Rom or DoggRom
2/ DON'T reboot yet, go to advanced/ power off (CWM) [or back to the main menu, then go to reboot->power off (TWRP)]
3/ start flash tool / select Flash / Flashmode
4/ select .290 ftf
5/ deselect wipes (done on install or Rom), exclude everything but kernel and then flash
6/ Reboot
7/ run XZDualRecovery 2.7.71 from pc
Will this work @hamdogg, @jackie099 ???

maybe that should have read:
5/ deselect wipes (done on install of Rom) [Top Box]
5a/ exclude everything but kernel [Middle Box]
5c/ and then flash
at that stage it should boot on a locked bootloader with partial root access, then running XZDualRecovery would give full root and recoveries - It's my belief that our roms wont boot on a locked bootloader as is?

Hey, I just followed the following steps and have working Bravia engine (Me thinks ) with root on a .136 C6833.
Backup TA.
unlock bootloader
1) full flash .136 ftf using flashtool. let the phone boot up and do all the initial setup.
2) Flash jackie's kernel.
3) flash update_SU 1.93.zip
4) using flashtool, flash kernel only (.136)
5) restore TA and relock bootloader
voila rooted .136 with a locked BL and working Bravia Engine
Credits to jackie099 for his kernel and DevShaft for BackupTA utility.
I didnt do any research so no credits to me
i just tried something on my phone and it worked so am posting it!!
Mods if am offending someone or violating any rules, pls notify and delete the thread!
If one hasn't already ready backed up their TA then root is required for the 1st step.

If you spread any instructions, then I ask to give references to other sources.
For example jackie's kernel. Where I shall look for it?

NO !
If you gonna flash just a kernel your Update center will pop up notification about new system .136 system update.
So to remove that you have a choice.
-You need to remove Update center.apk.
or
You need to flash like this (everything besides "system" and "wipe app data")
This is XDA, if you cant search...
NO !

Where he says to flash just the kernel you already have a full .136 so i doubt updatecentre will care.
To OP congrats on finding this out (although it is semi common knowledge that it will work like that)
Just one thing, if you unlock the BL again it will cause another data format, but you can make a backup of the TA in its unlocked bootloader state and use that to unlock and thus not format data. Just make sure you have them well named.
Quick question..
To get root: I ota to 136, unlock bl, flash Jackie ric kill kernel/recovery, flash su. I wouldn't mind trying this but how is "partial root" problem avoided when using the stock non ric kill kernel that is required to relock bl?

@muntaha_v3 or @blueether ~ same question as buzman; don't you need non standard kernel to keep full root (system rw).

True, but many people only need read access to /system. May be that is the case here?
And you could always flash a unlocked backup and hot-boot a modded kernel for the odd occasion that you need full root?
Or, as I thought just after posting, a "system r/w access" start up script prior to stock kernel flash and you could also keep full root after stock kernel flash.
Sent from my C6833 using Tapatalk
Sorry guys, was busy with some official Training programs so didnt have time to come online.
1) Yes you have only read access to system.
2) Restoring TA doesn't cause full wipe.
3) this i tried for some of those friends of mine who own Xperia Z1 and Z but dont exploit their full potential because they are scared they'll lose warranty. Convinced one of them, the others are still in line though. Shame on them
Not meaning to get pedantic, maybe the thread should be renamed to "unlock bl, su, relock bl" as root implies rw access to root lol (unless rw script for system is run during boot)

Hi All
Have rooted my UK 6833 LTE
I have dual recovery and i think i put GPe custom rom (BeanStalk-4.4.4010-20140729-togari_gpe) by accident as mines a LTE model
I lost my phone signal.
So i downgraded to stock.
Tried to put another rom and says my phone is GPe
Now i cant put GPe or non GPe custom roms in my phone
any ideas
many thanks
how did you 'down grade to stock'?
The best way to continue will be to extract the kernel (boot.img) from the zip of the ROM you want to flash and fastboot it then use that to flash the ROM zip:
Download correct ROM
Download flashtool http://flashtool.net
Extract boot.img
Copy ROM to SD card
Power off phone
Run flashtool (if windows 8.x read about installing unsigned drivers)
Select 'flash'
Select 'fastboot'
Select 'select kernel to flash'
Connect phone while holding vol up key
Disconnect phone
Boot phone
Enter recovery (vol up when LED turns purple)
Flash ROM
Wipe as needed
Reboot phone
Installed stock rom 4.4.4, working now.
But I still can't install custom roms.
I'm after putting rom beanstalk 4.4.4, it looks great
Ah maybe u have to open bootloader
