[Q] Changing dialer... - HTC Amaze 4G

Hi all,
I'm current using Viper Rom on my Amaze and am finding it a bit more stable than SpeedRom which was my DD for a couple of years basically. My only issue with Viper is that I hate the HTC dialer and would like to swap out for the SpeedRom dialer which I think is AOSP but \I'm not sure.
Is it just as simple as pushing the phone.apk file from SpeedRom or is it more complex than that? Thanks in advance for your help.
Joe

Hi Joe, it's a little bit more in depth than that.
In most cases, there are dependent library files related to the system apps.
HTC sense is very complicated. Aosp is what it's based on. Honestly I haven't tried much of using anything aosp in viper.
There's also a different framework in sense that sick doesn't have.
That is why aosp has working Bluetooth and sense 4.0 and up doesn't. There's so many dependencies that need editing and you pretty much would have to be a HTC programmer to make things work.
If you can find all the files that go with the dialer, it may work.
Also, there may be an after market app on the play store that meet yells the same result you are looking for.

Maybe a theme and not a Rom?

I'm a pretty basic guy with pretty basic needs. I like a certain look and functionality to my DNA. I have been debating over what my DD should be and am using Viper DNA (which completely kicks major ass good). When I mean basic I really mean it though. I keep going back and forth from the stock 2.04.605.2 710RD rooted rom and this one and I need a guide or some pointers to get what I want to get out of it. I just learned how to use ADB last week so I am new to the format, but I did manage to do the following:
SuperCID
UNLOCKED Bootloader
Root
S-Off
Blocked OTA updates
Flashed a kernel
My current setup is the updated radio of 1.01.01.0110 and the kernel for the 2.04.605.2 710RD update 3.4.10-ga02d2c6
I think I may be making bad decisions at the install of Viper DNA because the stock rom battery lasts forever but the Viper DNA rom only lasts half as long so I must be making a mistake somewhere.
All I really want is the stock version with these simple modifications :
Basic calculator as the sense one has weird number design (ugly design really)
Aosp looking status bar like the one guichh has but with a plain vertical battery with no percent
Aosp dialer
Working mms with aosp theme as well
Everything else can stay stock. Oh and if that pesky wifi notification in the pull down will go away that would he nice.
I know there are individual fixes for these (in most cases) but one of these options (status bar) is hard to pull of without running viper tweaks so you can't really pull that off on stock.
I know every end user is different and I guess I will have to try development next to really get what I want but if there is an easier way I would appreciate any and all help.
Actually I've been really reluctant about flashing a Rom because of that. Stock battery has been so good these few days I've had the phone. So it seems like you will have to play with the tweaks on viper / try different kernels on it. One reliable Rom that you could try is newtroot's. His were always very generous on battery life on previous devices.
The theme section has a good aosp theme last I saw. Not 100% sure, I kind of like sense 4.

I have heard a rumor that Viper DNA version 1.2 will be based off of the 2.04 version. I've been a beta tester for Sony for a very very long time. So I know the feeling of being sworn to secrecy. Hopefully, I will look forward to the new Viper DNA 1.2 and love it as much as you say.

Nice to see you chime in Big Andrew. You have been most helpful to me in the past and I really appreciate your input as well as everyone else who has put up with the noob learning how to use adb. I managed to master my Thunderbolt a while back but the DNA has opened up a whole new world to me and I feel I may be annoying more than I should be. I know I ask a lot of questions and I try to learn something new every night so it may be time to crack the knuckles and dig into theming, skinning, or dare I say it, mild development to achieve what I am looking for.
If there is a way to do what I need running stock rooted with the stock kernel I will be more than happy to take a good "noob bashing" with replies that say something to the effect of this:
Okay idiot bone - step one to get your soap status bar and icons is to go to adb and do this...
Lol. I can take a good bashing. I realize that xda is a little more tech savvy than my previous forum home so I am prepared to hear comments like that....and "your village called, they want their idiot back". Lol.

[Q] Which ROM for mostly stock but HTC camera?

Since I naively installed the update, I've been stuck on stock since November. In anticipation of finally being able to unlock, I wanted to ask which ROM I should use. Here's my requirements:
- Stock SMS app
- HTC Camera
- As much stock as possible -> people app, dialer, etc. I would prefer absolutely no Sense, but I can live with it in the Settings and stuff if necessary
- prefer 4.2, but 4.1 is acceptable
Thanks for any advice...
viper rom if you want sense 4+ still. it's the best one out there.
Sent from my HTC DNA
What you are asking is not possible. The HTC camera depends on the htc framework. Your best bet is to flash desense viper or flash something like pac. Stock HTC camera isnt that big of a deal. There is an app on the play store that is basically the stock messaging app, but it did not work well on viper for me.
I personally hate the update to the HTC camera lol I like being able to take more then one pic at once but now u take a pic, then I have to accept it, and then it closes lol.... Way too many steps IMO

What are you talking about?
You may have review duration on... Turn it off, it's then instant... You can also hold down the camera button for burst mode...
I always love uninformed people just throwing incorrect info around...
---------- Post added at 10:34 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:31 AM ----------
And to the OP what you're asking for is not really possible.
You can download a desensed ROM... Most of the features (not all) will be there, but it'll still be Sense.
As for 4.2.2, unless the butterfly dump gets ported, or VZW either has an update to this phone or an HTC One on the horizon, your best bet is a AOSP based ROM.
It has nothing to do with being uninformed, I've gone through the camera options multiple times and googled the crap out if it but that option just is not there for me.

There's some great camera apps in the play store that are as good or better than the sense camera. I'm using camera jb+ on PAC and it's the best camera I've used. It gives me a 16:9 option too.

[Q] [Request] Android 4.2.2 ROM port over?

Would anyone else love to see the 4.2.2 ROM ported from the Google Edition One to the DNA? I have been trying to get some sweet stock Android on my DNA for a long time and it doesn't appear there are any ROMs on here or anywhere else that would accomplish that. Is it possible?

CM vs. Stock Android = two completely different roms. I want to use the CM 10.1 roms, but they don't have working BT audio yet. Maybe this phone's rom will help them get it working? The GPE rom will get tweaked and modded by the htc one community and hopefully those will be easily ported to the dna. Sense is cool and all, but I would like to free up some space on my stupid 16gb of non-expandable storage more than anything. Heck it might even get better battery life without all that htc stuff running in the background? Keeping my fingers crossed. :good:
There are plenty of stock roms. Not necessarily pure aosp, but there's cm amongst many other roms. And they are all about 99% working.

Ubuntu Touch On the G2

http://www.engadget.com/2013/10/17/a-stable-version-of-ubuntus-mobile-os-is-available-now/
I know we are still a community very young here in the G2 forums but I think some Ubuntu goodness would be good to have as a choice. The stable version just launched for the Nexus 4. I've no deving experience but it'd be cool if a dev could take a look and see if it's possible to do a port :fingers-crossed:
Not to burst the bubble but, at least on the N7, it's totally unstable, and unusable.
Doesn't mean development can't start. Get the groundwork in place so when the Ubuntu Touch source is more refined, then a full-fledged ROM won't be much far away.
More options is a good thing even if they have maturing to do.
Personally, I'm interested in seeing how the docking-as-a-desktop thing will perform considering the specs of this phone being so nice.

I was able to use it on my galaxy nexus just fine. Everything worked near flawlessly. Just couldn't make or receive phone calls or text but that's because I was on CDMA. From what I remember they have had several very stable builds on a few devices. Just no interest because of app development.
But my view on this is if its made available for more devices then eventually someone will pick up development of apps for it. The people that have say its very easy.

Ubuntu touch I'm new with...just been doing for last 2 days LOL. I have been in the Android scene for a while, though (@tsdeaton knows me from the good ol Photon).
I will say this...UT is not as simple as it seems. I've got issues with multiple things so far (pretty much, I have a nice, pretty UI with a semi-functioning camera and NO networking or sound so far), but am working at figuring out how they get this working on their native devices and hoping to reverse engineer what they did for the HTC One.
As far as their native builds, the N10 and N7 are greatly lagging behind the N4 and GNex in terms of stability. If you check out their current status of each build (I don't have a link, but a quick googling should find it), you'll get an idea of the daunting task ahead of anyone looking to make this work.

Compile was not too hard...I can get that far. It looks really nice when it boots, which took all of 12 seconds on first boot. I thought it had hung on a boot animation when I realized there was a status bar...LOL. It's pretty smooth and a VERY nice UI to be honest (and I don't really like ubuntu on the PC...I'm a Mint fan myself).
It's the part where they start talking about audio and writing Alsa UCM mixer files that I get a bit lost, as they have links to what SHOULD be reference material on HiFi and VoiceCall, yet both go to "Page does not exist" pages, thus leaving the builder on their own to figure it out.
Camera and wifi I should be able to fix. Phone, data, etc...I'm not sure that will work right without a LOT of work.
