So all of you note users.. what phones have you switched to? Or what phones are you keeping your eye on?
I've got my upgrade coming up next month. The cool new phones that caught my eye are the G Flex and the HTC One (bit older though). It doesn't seem like ATT has many new options that aren't just new versions of the galaxy devices. The Gflex in particular I think looks awesome from first glance.. but i think a 6" screen is just a bit too ridiculous. I was thinking of dropping down in size if anything from my Note.
Wait for the S5. On feb 24th they are going to announce its release date. It will be the first phone with 64bit processing. It's a smidge smaller than the note.
I moved on to the note 3. I dint recommend it. The bootloader is locked and we have to use safestrap.
I'm waiting on the S5.
Only going to get it if there's an all-metal version.
If not I'll stick to the Note 1.
The Note 3 has a locked bootloader could imply that the S5 might have it as well.

I am going to get an iDevice. Can't stand any phone with locked bootloader and without per app permission control. May stay with Note 1 it's running Kitkat so well with both ATT and T-Mobile LTE.

Since the note 3 from att has locked bootloaders we cant install kernels, or custom recoveries. There's software called Safe Strap or "SS" that allows us to partition the device memory and install slots. We can install custom roms in these slots and run them. But that's it! No cpu control, no governors, no over/under volting, no cool stuff like that which gives our device freedom to perform the way we want it too. If you want a note 3, buy an unlocked N9000. Not the N9005, or N900A.
I'm ready about to get an xperia z1s from tmobile, I have the want/need to get away from the samsung scene, it has a locked boot loader as well but I hope root will come out for that phone soon, from reviews I see for that phone it is a already great phone and one person on xda said it will be like icing on the cake to get root
I bought a note 2 at a decent price and it was nearly brand new. Got cm11 on it and it's great

I don't know if you are paying attention to the development forum but they have clockwork tethered n on the device and they are actively working on an unlock n r very close.
Development is not everything !
NEVER buy a phone for what it 'might' do in the future. Buy it for what it can do now.
If custom roms are important to you, don't get this phone right now. Get an S3 or One X.
If a really good oem experience is OK for you, and root is good enough, then look no further! I think this is an awesome phone.
But until proven otherwise, assume that the bootloader will never be unlocked. It might be, but if that is critical to you, then you should be buying a phone that can do that today.
Each to their own.

Why buy those when the N4 is for sale as I type this note. You will not only get the custom ROM's but the quickest update to the latest releases of Andriod.

If only N4 had LTE, then I would jump right on that. In the meantime I'm looking forward to getting my OG, and keeping my fingers crossed for the devs to work their magic. Anyone else feel the same?

This phone is an animal. And even now, the test units for the N4 have been updated with the build that will be on the shipped units and in benchmarks and real world testing it doesn't hold a candle to this phone. That of course poses a couple of questions like why is vanilla android not as fast or faster than the build on the optimus g if the hardware is so similar? And why buy the n4 for faster access to updates if those updates don't bring it up to the same performance level as the Optimus G?
Wireless charging is the only feature I wish we had and hey, I can live without that. So IMO this phone is superior and will be even more so if/when the developers here work there magic and get passes the locked bootloader. So I would suggest sticking around.

While I agree that LTE and expandable storage are important, if lack of sufficient progress towards boot loader unlock, in 5 days, would drive you to return the device, for one that will get customer ROMs, getting an S3 which from what I read is about to lose it's dev support due to Samsung policies (devs are tired of doing inefficient, cumbersome work arounds that shouldn't be necessary) isn't a good option, even if you got LTE everywhere you went and could expand storage to 2 TB. The One x has it's drawbacks too.
Even stock unrooted, this thing is a monster in terms of what I'm seeing it do. I may still trade it in for the One X+ at the end of this week, but if I don't I certainly can't find fault with it yet. If I can survive a Droid Bionic with utter lack of Dev support (for good reasons, obviously), the LG OG will be a snap!

I'm thinking about return the OG also, and possibly getting the One X+ (if it's battery life is decent) or the Nexus 4 (and giving up LTE, not sure though).

Also even a stock upgrade to jellybean will give us a large performance boost... I am happy enough with root for now, there is no phone that compares to this one.
Imo with just 8/16 gb storage options , no matter what power it houses n4 is pretty useless ! A couple of hd games and few songs Will fill it up and then how am i supposed to take advantage of those a15 quads !

I really wish the HTC One X+ had 2GB of RAM, mainly because of the uncertainty of needing 2GB for the next version of Android OS.

The other thing you aren't understanding is the Tegra 3 only supports single channel memory, so that one gig is much slower than our 2gb of dual channel memory.

Do you guys know what a self-fulfilling prophecy is? Honestly, I think it will happen, ive learned a lot just so I can try to help solve this too. The more negative people are about it though the less likely people will be to discuss it or be motivated to do it.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
Realistically the only people "qualified" to answer this question would be a developer working on this. Anything a normal user says is pure speculation.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 2
I don't mind speculation.
If enough of us wish for it to happen than maybe it will (remember Peter Pan?)
There's a way around everything.
Self fulfilling prophecy theory is lame. Not only is it fake but a lazy way to think. The only ones who can figure it out are the ones trying to hack it. The rest of the people can think whatever they want. They have no impact on it happening or not.
With that said I do not believe this will be unlocked. The beauty of design in this thing limits the amount of roads one can take to attack it. Its never been cracked and its been tried for well over a year spanning multiple devices. We only had a *unlock* because of leaked info. That's it. If that didn't happen we would all have nothing.

I am optimistic but honestly I will likely be on the next device GN3 or something else long before it happens. Yet I still offered up my money to help motivate those who can get it done.
Odds Key Lime Pie for S4 happens?
As a previous Verizon user, I don't see this being unlocked.. Sorry
Not holding my breath. Anyone like to purchase a brand new GS4? I will never buy another phone before doing some homework. Good luck to those trying.

The real question isn't will it be unlocked (it won't be). It's will a leaked unlocked bootloader become available.
This is basically bad new for anyone wanting a phone with SDcard support and an unlocked boot loader in the future on VZW or AT&T. Samsung is the only SD option now... And it looks like they've got this boot loader thing locked down (no pun intended), at least when it comes up Qualcomm. If the Note 3 uses an s800, I don't see why the boot loader situation would be any different from the S4 and S4 active...
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 4
Vote with your goddamned wallets!
I hate to also be the voice of reason but the sad reality is that this booting processes is sealed up tight and it's all Verizon's doing. I'm here for my room mate who hates his stock S4 with a passion but absolutely loves my CM10.x+OC S4...I just switched from Sprint to T-Mobile, for networks. I considered Verizon and ATT but having had friends with Verizon phones (Motos especially) over the past few years I knew that it was nearly pointless, save for a leaked engineering/unlocked signed bootloader or 1 chance at an exploit on release-day firmware before it was sealed up tight and likely for good.
It's not that I have no hope, there's always a chance and there is always a way...but with each successive breach of such a system the next iteration becomes exponentially more difficult to overcome.
I stuck with Sprint's haggard network for years because I knew they didn't give phone hackers a hard time. I switched to T-Mobile because I did my research and found the same. HTC capitulated on their new locked and encryption signed bootloaders after the EVO3D debacle a few years back.
As for my new Samsung Galaxy S4? I had my phone for 20 minutes before I flashed a custom recovery and had a CM10.1 nightly running with a custom 2.2ghz OC kernel that comes with tons of governors, tons of IO schedulers...on light use with screen turned down low, OC'd to 135mhz/2.1ghz I can get almost 2 days out of my phone and it is smooth as effing silk like no phone I've ever seen...and I've had no wakelock problems.
This phone screams.
Am I bragging? Sure...but not to hurt your feelings. I'm sick of companies acting like THEY own the computer that YOU bought for YOUR pocket. I'm bragging to enrage you.
Vote with your goddamned wallets. I did when HTC wouldn't unload their bootlockers (lol), and Samsung will forever have my business unless they start that crap too (or their phones start to suck)....same goes for T-Mobile. (Protip: stick to the underdogs. You get far better customer service and far more leeway...when you are #1 and #2 you appear to not need to try anymore and treating your customers like idiot children and criminals is somehow acceptable).
This isn't Samsung's doing...ask any Sprint, T-Mobile or international model owners.
Vote with your goddamned wallets.
I wish the best to you my brethren. Good luck and happy hacking.
well...

True, but sometimes the trip the way around is so long, almost nobody will care in the end.
Since the bootloader is still unlockable, what are your thoughts on the continual development of ROMS, etc on the S4 ? Do you feel that future of S4 development is doomed? I recently just purchased my s4 and was one of the lucky few who were able to unlock theirrs prior to the mess. However, now I feel that I might have regretted buying one.

There never was an unlocked bootloader save for the developer edition only available direct from Samsung.
Development for the i545 is far from dying if you look through the forum. The fact that the bounty for root and recovery on ME7 is several thousand dollars should be telling.

Even if people start breaking/losing their MDK phones, there's still GPE and Dev versions. Should still see development for those, which will be of help to us MDK folks as well.
If you end up having to exchange it, and you get an ME7, could always sell it and put that cash towards a Dev edition as well.

GE phones are fine and dandy but none exist for VZW, just like VZW has no nexus phones, because they want complete control over the devices and the software.
I currently have an S3 and when my contracts runs out I will either move to another carrier and buy GE phones or buy Dev phones off contract for verizon, but I'm more inclined to go elsewhere and go with GE phones.
When it's announced(hopefully) I'll be ordering my developer edition note 3. As far as the gs4 goes, I only know of 1 developer who stopped developing for the gs4. No one else who has started has quit.

I've had similar concerns. I took it as a reason to learn some of this stuff on my own. I've been building cm 10.2 from source to start. That said, I'm less concerned about development now but I will continue to learn how to do as much as I can on my own. I just hope I never physically damage the phone beyond usability. Hey! Right now I have a Galaxy Note 2 and I was just curious if I should get an S4. I have a little over a year before I can upgrade again and I'm finding Galaxy S4s on Craigslist in my area around $250-$350, which isn't all that much more than a regular upgrade. I like the higher resolution display they have and the better camera, but I'm not sure if that would be the only thing I'd be getting out of it. Also, since there are developer edition S4s, I figured I could easily flash it to Kitkat, such as CM11, and expect no bugs or glitches. What's everyone's thought on going from a note 2 to an S4? Worth the money? Do you think it'd hold me off another year?

I would look to see what one is selling for, on EBay or any of the the other sites that you can buy a used phone and that should gibe you a jump off point for the price. Also, what version of android is on it? Is the boot loader unlockable? Hell, if your not too high on the price, I may give you an offer on it for another phone for testing builds on. I have 2 galaxy Note 8.0s gt-n5110 and that really make it nice for testing out what works and what does not on new roms and mods.

Unfortunately the phone is locked however also rooted....I prefer using Xposed over another rom...It just gave me the freedom to completely customize what I wanted...and it was a nice work around to not being able to install roms with the locked bootloader. I also have a Note 12.2 that is rooted but tripped Knox...however it's stock rooted also...but the tablet is less imperative to be rooted. As for the Note 2...I also have several cases & 2 extra batteries & a battery charger to include with the phone. I figured it would be a great phone for someone's kid...powerful yet cheap enough not to break the bank like a new phone would... Thanks for the information!!
