I found a very easy method to preserve root access between different ICS firmwares.
Maybe many of you already know, just post it for convenient as new firmware released.
Requirements:
1. Already running on rooted 4.0 system
2. ROOT TOOLKIT from here
Steps:
1. Download and extract "Step1-rooted.bat" to the same directory as "Step 1.bat"
2. Run "Step1-rooted.bat" BEFORE upgrading/flashing
3. Flash/update WITHOUT WIPING ANYTHING
4. Run "Step2.bat" after upgrade/flashing
5. Your root access is back, enjoy!
Tested with Sony PC Companion, Sony Update Service and Flashtool update/flash
Output of Step1-rooted.bat should look like this if there are no errors:
This is an adapted idea from the methods of
Dan Rosenberg (vulnfactory.org)

Technical Detail:
I've just changed all "adb shell XXXXXX" to "adb shell su -c XXXXXX" to retain /data/local/tmp exploit after update,
therefore we don't need to flash back to GB to create the symlink
Thanks man, I'll keep this for further upgrade
Had a slight problem with step two not installing SuperSU.(My fault I believe for unplugging it too early) But just turned the phone off and on again and ran Step2 again.
A lot easier than going back to GB and having to back up and restore all my data.
Works perfectly with my Locked Bootloader too.
So Cheers!

Any particular error or reason for it not working?
Could I get some assistance using this? I'm kind of a noob at this.
I have ICS and root on my S.
I started the step1root bat and pluged in my device holding power and volume- down.
I got this error messages (see picture)
Can someone please explain what exactly I need to do to get this working?
Why not just untick kernel in FlashTool?

Can i update with pcc after step1 without loosing root?

You run the the flashtool by holding down the volume button and then plugging in the USB cable.
BUT for step1 and step2 It seems to work best if you boot up the phone, enter your pin. and leave it on the home screen and then run it.
So: On homescreen -> Run Step1.bat -> Restart. -> Turn off. -> Set up Flashtool with new rom -> Volume down + USB cable -> After ROM has installed, boot to homescreen -> Step2.bat.

Thank you for the answer.
So with my phone on (at homescreen) I connected to pc and ran step1.bat, but I still get exactly the same lines like on my screenshot.
I just want to make sure, that is how it's supposed to be?
I can flash the ftf now and then run step2?
It looks like errors to me, but like I said, I know nothing about this

Did you have root before this? You should not get that error. It should complete and then restart your phone for you.
Do you have 'Step1-rooted' in the same folder as 'step1' and 'step2' and a 'data' folder?
I would wait to see what imTigger says, because he may know the solution for that error. So dont flash your rom just yet

Hello arcsuser,
Thanks for your help,
I have downloaded the zip file as proposed.
unfortunately I was not able to install it because I don't have the root access on my tablet.
If there is a way to install the zip file without the recovery mode I'd be glad to know it.
if not, I will have to go through the process.
thanks again for your help.
let me know if there is a way without the root mode

Actually I have now the same question than "OP" on the recovery mode. I have now rooted the device the "super user app" is available and activated.
but I still can't access the recovery mode. I have tried the key combination mentioned in your post to "OP". then I referred to the post from DooMLoRD "All the info you need before you begin" with the Xperia Z tablet where the recovery mode is described.
I have the sony screen displayed, then I press volume up, the boot is going the normal way.
I tried with the usb cable connected to the PC, then it goes directly to the Xperia logo.
I tried the normal reboot (one light falshing) and the hard reboot (3 lights flashing) I do not have the device vibrating like explained by DooMLoRD.
Is this the reasn ?
thanks for your help again.

You don't need recovery to install the apps if you have root. Just unzip the file using root explorer. The unzipped file will show from the structure where the files have to go so just copy them to the corresponding folder on the tab using root explorer. (apps, and their associated odex file if there is one, will usually be in /system/app folder) Don't forget to set the permissions (rw-r--r-- for system apps and odex files), also using root explorer. Reboot and if they're gonna work as system apps they will...

Hello guys, My XZU C6802 just got bricked today, in attempt to install Cyanogenmod.
I was rooted, I had dual recovery and I guess I installed CM10.2 because it was the most stable one out now, although, I didn't think and or realize that I can't go from a 4.4.4 to 4.3 on the 10.2..... I'm an idiot.
However, I've tried every method online to try and boot the phone up but it just won't turn on....
I've left it in charge for hours on end, 6-7 Hours and no point... Sony Support that I called told me to, Connect a wall charger to it, then at the same time hold power button and top volume button and if it vibrated 3 times that means the hardware is fine and the phone is responding.... in which mine did that and he told me to leave it in charge and to try and turn it on after a few hours.... but that didn't work either. It's connected to the charger but it's just blinking red LED light all the time constantly.
I can put it in boot loader mode only, by connecting the usb and holding VOLUP button at the same time as plugging in the usb.
I don't know what to do and I really need my phone, so I hope someone can help me!
I don't know if its gone now or if it's worth anything, should I sell it, keep it? I love the phone but if this is how it's going to be for a while or always at this point, Might as well try and sell it cheap and get another Samsung maybe.
I hope I don't have too. Please help guys!
Thank you XDA!
Did you try flashing stock ftf? That should help.
Hold volume down button while plugging in the usb cable to your pc, the led might go green (if i remember right), meaning you booted into flashmode correctly,
then download the flashtool from the internet and ftf from the forum and flash it off.
You should have it working

If you can get to the bootloader then just fastboot flash the approprate(IE the offical version that was on your before you borked it. if I recall correctly its probably listed in the bootloader) kernel, fota, and system image files. I'm sure there is a thread here that has the files. As an aside if you can get to the bootloader, you are not bricked, you're fine man/woman, listen to The Eagles on this one.
Did you unlock the boot loader at all?
anyway to recover:
download flashtool (http://flashtool.net)
download a FTF (see FTF thread in dev section)
start flashtool
select flashmode
select FTF from above
select start/flash/etc (cant remember the wording)
wait for the graphic to say connect phone
Hold vol. down key while connecting phone - LED will flash (blue?) for about 1/2 a second then turn off
(if the above does't work press the red reset button beside the SD card slot and try again)
wait for flash to finish
disconnect phone
You could also try EMMA from Sony.
Worked ery well everytime I bricked mine

Download sony pc companion and install it. Goto update software and select & make sure your phone is off and plug it in while holding vol up or vol down to get it in flash mode. PC should recognise it after installing drivers and select the recovery option if given ( you might have to tell it to force an update or it might automatically do it). Sit or make a cuppa while waiting for it to download the sony rom. You wont re lock your bootloader just restore the sony rom. Once downloaded it should start the process, I've done it a few times and managed to recover it.
Sony PC Companion won't work, tried it a lot. I have also tried EMMA too. Doesn't work, emma says; I have a locked boot loader.

Thanks blueether. I used flashboot to unlock my boatload and then phones screen turned on and then I flashed FTF and it was complete reboot and I have my Stock back. Then loaded dual recovery again and restored my tarp backup of my complete phone. its working great thanks to you.
One question I have now, since I unlocked the boot loader and then re-installed stock, does this mean I have to unlock it again to be able to install Cyanogen or it permanently stays unlocked?

I didn't mention unlocking it in the guide did I?
Now that you have unlocked it (and I assume that you dont have a TA backup) just leave it unlocked. the only point to relocking is if you have a TA backup to do it with to restore the DRM keys that you just wiped

I had the same problem.
Just unlock it via fastboot like described on the sony homepage ( http://developer.sonymobile.com/unlockbootloader/unlock-yourboot-loader/ ) . The only thing you can't do is checking if its possible to unlock your bootloader, so just jump this step (worked with my C6833, no warranty to work with other models fron other countries).
Then you can use EMMA without any troubles any time you brick it. At least with my device it worked.

yes you have to unlock the bootloader to run custom ROMs and kernels, but if you don't back up the TA before you unlock it you have no way to get back to a pure stock state and you lose your DRM keys - so things that rely on them no longer work.

Screencasting is one thing it breaks. The backup you made in recovery before unlocking your bootloader should relock it if restored. I have never been able to confirm if it might also restore drm keys though.

I have even downloaded the tr.apk separately and put it in the Files folder like it asks... Still.. no luck.

Any easier ways? Any other ways to root and install recovery?
I have been trying many ways and I haven't gotten much luck.
Thanks.

Please help if you can! Have a backup TA section. When connecting the phone without a battery, the computer recognizes it as SEMC Flash Device. Thanks in advance. Sorry for my English.

Please help if you can! Have a backup TA section. When connecting the phone without a battery, the computer recognizes it as SEMC Flash Device. Thanks in advance. Sorry for my English.

No it cant be updated with a FTF. I've not seen one of these bricks recovered. ask the_laser in the hard brick thread is the only real option other than new motherboard

now that your BL is unlocked life is simple, flash bootloader with recovery, flash su from recovery. although [NUT]'s dual recovery should work just as easy

Ah I see.
I checked the thread you sent me, I cannot hotboot it, it doesn't detect my device for some reason.
I have all ADT, ADB, FLASHMODE AND BOOTLOADER mode drivers, it has worked before.
Any suggestions any ideas? Also I was wondering, is this for 4.4.4 the doomkernal you sent or 4.4.2? Cuz there's a pic in the thread showing 4.4.2 so I just wanted to make sure!
In the thread, this was mentioned, however, I don't understand this at all, well not much anyway.

Does anyone also have any idea when 5.0 is coming to Z ultra? or if there is beta available now?
I'm running stock 5.0. Phone is new. Bootloader is unlocked. How do I load a kernel that has twrp??? And root
Sent from my C6802 using XDA Free mobile app
uh...
Okay im not gonna blame u. Much has changed over the years and guides might be out of date.
Is your phone in a bootloop after unlocking bootloader? This can occur when you unlock your bootloader cause of wiping.
If yes and you are stuck in a bootloop
a) Flash a compatible kernel for stock rom to make the phone boot. Or flash a stock .ftf again. It wont lock your bootloader.
b) Continue to the next hidden guide.
If no and you are able to boot stock rom, skip to here.
1. so install a recovery
a)
download it: https://dl.twrp.me/togari/
direct link: https://dl.twrp.me/togari/twrp-2.8.5.0-togari.img
b)
flash it with "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
2. boot to recovery
power on
Wait for the led to light up
now press vol + or vol - ...both do the same
3. download UDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip
download it: https://download.chainfire.eu/696/SuperSU
direct link: https://download.chainfire.eu/696/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip?retrieve_file=1
4. transfer it to your internal memory
a) while booted to recovery plug in your usb cable to the pc
b) now transfer the file UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip to your internal memory
c) unplug cable
d) go to install>find the file UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip > flash the file
e) reboot
No cuz. I haven't done anything with my phone yet. My bootloader came unlocked. I don't have to go through all that.
So how do I boot a modded kernel on my phone. I can't access Factbook or recovery.

I do not understand you?
How did your bootloader "came unlocked"? Did your phone arrive with the bootloader unlocked?
To clarify: Is your bootloader unlocked? Yes or no?
What do you mean with that you can not access fastboot or recovery?
Do not confuse Fastboot and recovery. They are two different things.
Fastboot is always possible to access and you do need this to flash a kernel.
The Xperia Z ultra has three modes to start to.
To start normal:
Press power button and the phone starts.
To start fastboot:
Make sure the phone is off.
Hold vol + and plugin usb cable at the same time.
The phone will boot and a blue led will turn on.
To start to flashmode:
Make sure the phone is off.
Hold vol - and plugin usb cable at the same time.
The phone will boot and led will blink yellow, red and then off.
Do not think the phone is off because there is no led or screen turning on. The phone is still in flashmode as long as the usb cable is connected.
If as you try to clarify: The bootloader is unlocked. FOLLOW THESE STEPS.
1. install a recovery
a)
download it: https://dl.twrp.me/togari/
direct link: https://dl.twrp.me/togari/twrp-2.8.5.0-togari.img
b)
rename the downloaded file from twrp-2.8.5.0-togari.img to recovery.img. < NOTE: Make sure to show the file type in the file manager on your computer. A file type is: .png, .jpg, .img etc etc etc
If you are using windows you can from the explorer.exe>options>tab: View>Hide extensions for known file types. Enable this.
flash it with "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
2. boot to recovery
power on
Wait for the led to light up
now press vol + or vol - ...both do the same
3. download UDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip
download it: https://download.chainfire.eu/696/SuperSU
direct link: https://download.chainfire.eu/696/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip?retrieve_file=1

d) go to install>find the file UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip > flash the file
e) reboot

Ok. I can't help you then.
If you do not have access to a computer it is hard for me to help you. It is possible to do it all from the phone. But this require more time.
And time for me to explain to you how to do it. Time I'm not willing to spend.
I suggest you to buy a computer.
Oh. Well then, thanx for your valuable time. And I'm taking up donations to buy a ? ....pc. As I'm poor and lowly

off topic:
I have never heard of a device being sold with the bootloader unlocked by default. Only developers edition is mainly sold with bootloader unlocked at arrival. And those are only sold by a dedicated section on the manufacture website.
Are you sure you not confusing this with the carrier sim lock? It perhaps was specified to be "unlocked from any carrier" allowing you to insert any simcard from any carrier.
I give u my bless. Hope you soon have the opportunity to have a pc.
You could use Flashify to flash .IMGs directly from your Ultra, but the kinda ironic thing here is that you have to be rooted. In your case, you have to have a custom kernel to root, lol. So you'll have to lend a computer or something to flash a custom kernel, and then you'll be able to live independently from a computer after that.

Xperia 1 goes on boot loop after flashing the ROM.
What happened.
>Flashed Xperia 1 using new flasher.
>Device started and while setup went on boot loop with a message"Your device is corrupt. It can't be trusted and will not boot. Your device will be powered off in 5 seconds."
I tried to repair using Xperia Companion but it won't stay to the Flashmode. It goes on loop with the message.
Used original cable and things.
But the device goes to fastboot mode if I press volume up during plugging.
Flashtool and new flasher cannot since the device won't go to flashmode while volume down and plugging.
What can I do further? Please help.
Does the phone turn on again after it automatically turns off?
What region did you flash btw?
It turns on and off automatically in two of the cases.
1. Connected to the PC.
2. Connected to the charger.
But stays in Fastboot mode connected to PC.
I was getting bootlops after flashing rom (locked bootloader, wanted to change region), using both newflasher and flashtool. In my case the problem was i had to wipe/format reset when flashing with flashtool, otherwise got a bootloop.
Once phone is booting, force a shutdown with volume + and power at the same time, then hold volume - and connect to pc, then use flashtool.

Yes, I tried that way but the problem is it won't stay in Flashmode. It shows that warning and goes to bootloop.
I still can see the light turns green while doing so but cannot hold.
Same with me, recover using pc companion and use good cable..
The problem i have because using bad cable

Thanks!
My phone doesn't stay in flashmode.
It only stay without loop and message in Fastboot mode.
Else would have flashed already!!
Yes my phone always said my phone not trusted..
I tried using newflashe always failed.
But after chae the cable and recovery from pc companion now its work
I agree, it might be PC problem (drivers) or cable definitelly. Try diferent cable and diferent pc, go to someone with PC and try with his cable

Thank you but the thing doesn't work.
I tried on Windows 7 PC ;
Installed Xperia Companion and Xperia one driver and yet again it booted into fastbootmode but not flashmode.
I used USB C-C cable, and then another sony phone cable but it didn't work.
I even tried a short cable of a battery bank.
Thats strange. Can you write in details what you have flashed and what you have skipped? Did you done something with your trim area?
Hi @munjeni
I unluckily flashed new device J8110. It was a new firmware for device named Sphinx or something similar which isn't released yet.
It was to be j9110 actually. I then flashed the firmware through new flasher. I flashed everything. Then device booted and during setup steps it rebooted. Then I knew the device was different.
I tried flashing J 9110 but then the device started showing the mesaage.
Why don't you reflash trought fastboot? Boot an recovery image with fastboot:
fastboot boot recovery.img
you will need to unlock bootloader to be able to do that. Trought recovery and adb to recovery you can do many things e.g. flash an custom rom... etc, just for idea.
I have thought of it but loosing drm keys was reason.

Doesn't matter anyway as you need access to the phone to toggle OEM unlock before unlocking bootloader
So..
What should I be doing?

But do you have choice? Did you tried?
fastboot erase userdata
Usedata sometimes cause boot loop and message on screen about corruption. Another thing which I curently thinking about, is your battery charged? Maybe empty battery don't allow you to get into flash mode.

I'm not sure. It was more than 50% when I did everything.
Not sure now.
Will it charge in fastboot mode?
I don't own device to be able to tell you. Seems you are not only one who have problem with flashmode, here https://forum.xda-developers.com/z3/xperia-z3v-general/bricked-sony-z3v-access-fastboot-t3510214 . Did you tried to erase userdata trought fastboot? I'm believing you will need to unlock bootloader first because you have no choice with locked bootloader because everything you try going to give you "command not allowed". Unlock bootloader, install an recovery, trought recovery you can reflash broken things, e.g. reguest from somebody with same device to give you raw partitions dump (excluding trim area, system, data, cache) and use DD command to reflash it on your phone, remember do not touch trim area, its on first partition! Good luck!

That link is 3 years old....
Without access to the phone there will be no access to the OEM unlock. Without that I don't think the bootloader can be unlocked.
It's hard to properly brick a sony phone with flashmode. With previous ones a different PC with different cables etc has worked
