Am I the only one that feels like the S4 has been partially abandoned by most devs [MK2]? Like AOSP is a dream we can say good bye to?
AOSP FOR MK2 IS THE MAIN POINT OF THIS DISCUSSION. STOP MENTIONING MDK
If you have an MDK S4 there are aosp ROMs available. If you aren't on MDK you're stuck with TW. I've actually seen a jump in the amount of developers in the past couple months.

And also more Devs are making ROMs generic now... Like liquid smooth. Its one file for all s4's and it detects which carrier/boot loader your phone is and installed the propper files.
This opens up many more options for the future of mdk s4 at least.. Philz recovery also has this now too so more and more are starting to use this method

Future reference, you should never buy a phone in which you don't like the stock software.

Yeah I remember you saying that before, but this is exactly the situation that can happen. I would've never bought a Samsung device if I didn't love Touchwiz. Sure I run AOSP a lot, I'm on Google Edition right now, but if something happened to this phone I would be perfectly content with stock Touchwiz.
If you're going to stick on Verizon, it seems Motorola is the only company coming out with AOSP phones on this network.

They're selling for less than I purchased it on contract. Which is also a bummer. Honestly If there was some for of aosp like GPe port or a kexec method I'd really love this phone. I'm currently running foxes w/ a holo(yolo) theme which is the only reason I haven't chucked it out of a third story window.

Indeed indeed. I'm hoping that you guys will be successful.
If only bypassing the whole locked os was possible and just booting from an SD card (like the HD2), or kinda like what they did on the touchpad.
Just re-write the whole system. Seems like that would be just as easy.

Unfortunately I cant find the right resistor to short to start the boot from SD process, though im still looking. The boot from SD is being tested on the note 3 today by some others so we'll see how that goes and go from there I guess.
I wish Samsung was as helpful as HP was with the touchpad, well that and a device was found with android already on it to help jumpstart that process.
With KitKat incoming, everything is being pushed into hyperdrive. http://m.cnet.com/news/samsung-updates-galaxy-s4-note-3-with-android-kitkat/57619025

I'm beginning to lose hope that the bootloader is going to be unlocked. Not because the devs here aren't fantastic - they are undoubtedly incredible. But based on my prior experiences with locked phones, this one seems to be unusually challenging. So what do folks think the odds are at this point?
PS: Forgive me if this belongs in another thread but I figured it's less about the process or the bounty and more about likelihood....

I am not totally sure, but I felt the CM team was indicating something in the way Google was implementing security and the code that really allows things to be done without the intrusion of root. I am not a developer and likely never would acquire the skills to be more than a guinea pig for them (don't mind) and I learned a lot from folks here especially with my HTC One DE which was a rockin device. I just wished AT&T service was better in my area and I could live with it. Some day I will likely try them again but I just can't do it right now. The big reason I did was to get unlocked phones, but given the sheer lack of LTE for US on the international phones its clear the OEM's are NOT making global phones on LTE today. It could be 10 years before we truly see global LTE phones.
Personalty, It's not about CM to me, I wasn't full access to my phone, if I have HTC I was S-OFF, if this phone I was the boot loader unlock.
Things take time and money, check the bounty, who knows for all I know they have a boot loader unlock and are waiting for it to hit $10G or some other number.
It's hard to say really. But I hope that Verizon still allows their HTC phone to at least get HTC -Dev unlock to allow custom recovery and ROM-Ming, and as for Samsung, if a Dev. edition is the only option, I will buy the phone for at Verizon (whatever one I can sell for the most on Swappa), sell it, make about enough money to buy the Dev. edition at only $200 after selling the device.
Just some ranting, sorry.
So I got the s4 a week ago and so far it's been alright but I'm kind of questioning if I should switch to the htc one? The s4 seems too bogged down with touchwiz and has good specs but it seems like they don't run extremely well ex. the camera seems great if I'm not moving at all and if I have good lighting but otherwise doesn't seem to do too well. Additionally I made the stupid mistake of updating to the locked bootloader when I got my s4 so I can't load a custom rom to get rid of the weight of touchwiz and things of that nature. I'm not trying to hate on the s4, I'm just picky and that's been my experience so far. I'm mainly looking for responses from people who have had both phones but I do like any input you can offer.

No I cant comment on personal experience with the HTC One but I can in regards to a ME7 S4. I do agree with the previous comment by brycekerr stating that the S4 is by no means a shabby phone. There's a lotta talk about the S4 not being significant enough of an upgrade from the S3...I disagree. I sliced and diced my S3 for a year and loved every second on of it but as kick ass as my S3 was my S4 is much snappier...
Isn't the HTC One locked even worse then the ME7 update? Like no root etc?

I agree for the most part, while the phone is snappier than my S3, TW does feel "heavier" than it did on the S3. Additionally, I am extremely disappointed in the camera and I find it tough to get good pictures, to the extent that I don't use it as often as I did on the S3. I can't comment on the One, but prior to the update that locked it up tighter than the S4 I was considering trading for one. Now I guess I'll just stick with the S4 and try to find ways to improve camera performance.

You think you could extract a camera apk from a TouchWiz ROM, for example Hyperdrive cause there's more than one camera in the zip, and drop it in as either a system or user apk?

There's a leaked Samsung Android 4.4 schedule on the net and it points to January for the S4 and N3. Going by the title at the top of the screenshot/picture it's the international variant S4/N3. US will be even longer. I'm quite pissed about this as these are the flagship devices and should be upgraded MUCH sooner. Thoughts?

I installed some of the newer files [Email, Calendar, QuickOffice] from here:

To get some of the newer available apps, but moving to 4.4 washes away the hard work that Devs [Hashcode, beans, and Hyper] have already invested into 4.3.
I find Root and ROMs much more beneficial than the OS,....for now. De-bloating and customization is key!!
4.4 literally brings no new Ingenuity or function.

I really had to think about it when I chose to get the Note 3, but I figure the features on this phone are pretty amazing, and the way its looking is that phones will mostly be locked in the future. ATT is locking theirs, Verizon is locking theirs, Im sure the rest will follow. If two out of the four major US carriers are doing this, there is a good chance that someone will find a way around it. For the time being, we have Hashcode who has found away around the lock for the most part. We just need to get something like Loki or KEXEC working.
My other option was to keep a phone that has outdated resolution, software and hardware..... I had the Note 2 for a year and was ready to move on.

That part was for my Note 2. :cyclops:
We have no one to blame but ourselves. We accept the fact that the US carriers bend us over the barrel and do what they want to us. We accept it everyday by using their services, paying their crazy stupid prices and by accepting their restrictive contracts. Anyone who expects a US Wireless Carrier to offer an update let alone a Samsung update within a reasonable time frame is simply crazy.
The only reason the HTC One is getting it so fast is . . . well they don't have many phones to actually update or are worth updating so they have to keep pushing updates out to stay relevant. Of course the HTC one didn't get 4.2.2 we got stuck with 4.1.2 until we got 4.3. Of course I gave up on my HTC One long ago.

There's still a few people working on it and I follow those threads, very interesting stuff.
For now Safestrap is still a gift.
I think the S4 isn't going out without a fight. It's an awesome phone and many devs still have one so hopefully their hard work pays off sooner than later.
I've looked into another phone myself and keep coming back to the S4 myself.
Flashing an AOSP rom isn't worth it to me to lose things like an SD card or removable battery.. So here I am with HD11 on my stock slot!
Verizon Galaxy S4
Safestrap 3.7
HYPERDRIVE 11

Flashing an AOSP rom has nothing to do with your sd card or removable battery lol. Trust me the battery still comes out of the phone.

He asked about maybe getting rid of the s4 and when I did actually think about that... The G2 was one I looked at... Along with HTC.
Neither of which you can remove the battery or have an SD card. Right? Maybe I'm wrong..
So that's where I was coming from there.
It's early maybe I just wasn't clear enough. I obviously know those two features have nothing to do with an AOSP rom lol
Edit-
Yea Josh I see what you're saying.
I wrote that other one before my coffee lol

Yes, that's why manufacturers are selling developer editions like Motorola and Samsung...

Why would I give up the best hardware thats out there?? Hashcode has given us the opportunity to load Custom Roms and we have devs like sbreen doing a hell of a job. I feel for those that will be missing out.
thats just me saying...............
Also, I think I'll leave this here. Apparently, nobody knows anything about what samsung and Verizon offers.

Buy this and end your rants.
Now hopefully everyone reads that and stops babbling about all this bootloader talk . It's getting really old....
This forum is now plagued with either FAQ that are asked and answered 5 times a day or people starting the same threads over and over with different wording. What ever happened to the old days where people actually read?

That's old news, expensive, and pointless now that they refuse to roll out updates for it.

So i have a fully functioning S4 why the F**K would i go waste money on another phone that i already own just for an unlocked bootloader... i would rather use safestrap for now. i would love to run an AOSP ROM but using hyperdrive with safestrap is already 100 times better then the stock TouchWiz.
Only if verizon supported the nexus 5 i would dump my s4 in a heartbeat for it, becuase it has beter hardware and is only $350 for the 16GB and $400 for the 32GB

Well, you could sell your s4 and buy the developer edition or you could've bought one from the beginning. I guess you don't "want" the unlocked BL that bad?

Title says it all
You can only run cm and aosp on mdk...mk2 is stuck with touchwiz Roms only

Yes it's possible. But not with out an unlocked bootloader.
No w/ out a locked bootloader you can't even run aosp. (Depressing eh?)

Can you post a link to a thread that says we can run CM on MK2? Thanks.

It's not that difficult to get. It's just pricey, and w/ the S5 coming out around the corner pointless.

The S5 is even more pointless if you ask me. It's going to come even more locked down than these s4's
Sure people will work hard at finding exploits but its not going to be any easier. Its getting to the point where more an more people will jump ship over to Sprint where you can still unlock the bootloaders.
So what if Knox gets mad and keeps telling you in tiny yellow and red letters during each reboot.

That's a joke right sprint?
People will jump to Tmobile. Unlockable and actually decent and fast service.
Granted the S5 (on vzw and att) will come more locked than the S4 but people (dan rosenberg or someone else) will initially come onboard and find a 2nd init or kexec method. Also vz has the most coverage around the US.
