Price point for a "one-trick pony" app? - General Monetization

Hi XDA,
I was hoping to get some thoughts on an effective price point for an app that has a very specific function / target audience.
For example here's my app, it mutes selected group texts:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.demarco.chatboss
I figure since it performs such a specific task, a higher price of $2.99 would be more effective. What are your thoughts?
Thanks,
Paul

I think you should start at a lower price. Get an audience, feedback etc and then increase the price down the road.
Good luck with you app

I have decreased the price to 99c, thanks for the tip!

Unless you have a niche that people are actively going to search for (as opposed to an app which people would find useful, but just don't know it yet), then it is going to be hard to gain momentum at a higher price point without some decent feedback and reviews. For your app I would definitely price as low as possible until that momentum is gained. I would also focus on marketing it as much as possible too. There is plenty you can do without shelling out a fortune.

As 4 months passed from his realease and he is in the 50-100 range it would be safe to say that it was a mistake to charge any money for his app.
He would have made more money with ads.

I guess all android users are poor now.

I saw this on pulse in an android section. I thought it was ridiculous. shows how ignorant isheep are. I guess $500 for a tablet plus 150 for a dock is cheap. Also there are android phones that cost way more than the iphone.

I saw those articles. lmfao just goes to show how childish alot of IOS users are. they are hating the fact that Android has Instagram now. Android flood of instagram users will overtake apple users in a short period of time. Android has way larger user base. I got it on my Atrix. haven't really tried it out yet. seems like a bunch of b.s. really. so i want to see what the hype is over. I hope its not just some dumb filters as I've had those and more alot longer on android in general. seems like some kind of picture sharing thing mostly between users. overrated IMO.
also funny is how the most popular iPhone model is the free 3gs iPhone offered by at&t. lol. how can we be poor if they using a free phone..lol

I'll not get too worried due to this. Only hipsters use Instagram and think they are "real" photographers. Yeah right.
In fact, no self respecting Android user will and should use Instagram. Camera360 beats it any day, anyway. Instagram is for spoiled brats and hipsters who think android owners live in a ghetto and live on food stamps.

This is horrible. What pisses me off the most about Apple is that they outsource their manufacturing and claim that it is to keep the cost of their product down, yet I believe they have the highest priced devices. Secondly they create a standard for the outrageously priced devices when they could EASILY shave 30 to 40 percent of the price on ALL of their mobile products if not ALL of them products. And, what's the worst part of all is that the mobile market is exponentially growing, meaning the two grand you dropped on your current phone/tablet setup will be obsolete in 3 to 6 months. Rather than really fine tune a product, they continually shell out new devices with "better" specs. Kinda ridiculous the way they produce products, even Android is guilty of this. It's bad for the consumer, but great for the companies. I mean why create a solid product that stays current for at least a year when you can make devices obsolete after three months which in turn will guarantee that at least a greater percentage of consumers will repurchase the newest devices at a quicker pace. Whatever happened to companies providing what is best for the consumer and not what makes the most amount of money in the shorted amount of time!
Oh well, it is what it is. Before you know it there will be an entirely new type of gadget out that replaces the smart phone/tablet all together and then the cycle repeats but with higher prices and shorter device life spans. Actually, to be honest, I am suprised that we aren't forced into purchasing firmware upgrades... Hmm, maybe I shouldn't of said that, I could totally see a CEO reading this post and going ZOMG GREAT IDEA $50 to update your device!
In any event, kudos to Cult of Mac for reporting on this, given that they're describing a large part of their own audience.
Ever jealous of being behind I see.
even if the iPad3 would cost half of the prime i wouldnt buy it.
man i hate the apple ecosystem and its hipster fanboys!
and whats up with the 'professional' photo-editing lol..
buy a real cam for that !
We didn't get Instagram, we got an emulator for the magical phone. Now we can carry all that smug self-importance in our pocket whenever we want to feel rich. 2 stars though because the voice recognition sucked and the photo filters made me feel ironic.

I am not going to read that article...
But I do have to say that when people buy an iPhone, they don't just buy a phone. They buy into a highly proprietary culture that promotes thoughtless spending.
Android? Well just comparing how easy it is to get refunds for purchases on Play vs App Store should give us all a good idea.

LOL! That is funny!
Social media really brings out the stupid in people. We used to think about something before sharing it with the world but now people share it with the world before thinking about it. It is because there always seems to be an audience (the internet) available. This is not the only case. (Incoming Hunger Games Spoiler) A while ago when the Grammys were on there was the whole "I would let Chris Brown beat me any day" tweets. Then when the Hunger Games movie came out there was the whole "I don't feel so bad about Rue anymore after finding out she was black".

lol all their rage right now.
What I get from this is Apple users blindly buy apps and hope they work for what they want it to do (As there is no refund). With Android I'm going to look for the free app if i'm looking for a specific function. If it does it well, then It might entice me to look into the paid version to see what extras you get if you pay for it. There are a lot of crap apps, and you kinda have to test them all to find the best one that works for you. It's annoying when there are no free apps on Apple to test what you want to do, and if the app you bought isn't what you thought it was or has problems, you can't refund. Sucks!
I really hate waking up, reading a thread and finding out Im poor.
I really need to talk to the IRS and get my 30 sum thousand dollars I sent them last year back.. do they not know Im poor?!?
What else can the Apple gods tell me??

Apple has kept a pretty consistent 1 year release schedule. Also why would you expect a company to lower their prices when they are selling their products as fast as they can? They arn't charities.

Being Aggressive with App Developers

Before I go into what I'm trying to propose here (if you haven't already guessed), let me say a few things and explain how I came to this idea.
I never owned a tablet, and I still don't. I'm waiting for the 32gb Nexus 10 to restock. So what I might say may or may be wrong because this is all based on observation from reading a bunch of reviews, user input, user criticism, and even fanboy hatred.
One of the biggest criticism from both reviewers and consumers with the Nexus 10 is the lack of tablet-optimized apps. But before I get bashed, let me state that I do know that apps upscale to the screen because Android apps are resolution independent unlike Apple apps. I am also aware that they don't look so bad most of the time and are very usable compared to when the Retina iPad came out and made its existing apps atrocious. I am very aware that this isn't much of a problem for a lot of you. But it is a problem for a lot of you as well.
The main thing is that it doesn't hurt to get tablet-optimized apps. No one is going be angry that they now have apps that look beautiful on their tablets.
Now what I'm trying to propose is that the Nexus 10 owners make it understood that they are unsatisfied with these current upscaled apps regardless of whether you are or aren't. App developers won't be bothered to add a tablet interface into these apps if no one asks for it in the first place, but consumer dissatisfaction is one of the biggest fears of many developers because if no one likes their apps, who's going to download them? Who's going to buy their apps if it has a 1 or 2 star in the market? Certainly not me and certainly not you.
I am not proposing that we drop app ratings to 1 or 2 star (impossible). I am proposing that there should be a sudden influx of downvotes to make it clear that people aren't satisfied with how things are. Downvoting it every so often will get diluted in the other votes. Maybe even sending emails to the developer could be effective.
Anyway, this is a suggestion/opinion. I'm open to discussion and disagreement. It can sound childish but I can't think of any way to show dissatisfaction. Hopefully there isn't any bashing and thanks for the read
It depends how many tablet uses there are that complain. It will probably be drowned out by the phone users giving it good reviews.
Developers can see how many tablet devices download their app. If that amount increased by quite a bit it might give them a bigger incentive to optimize their apps.
Basically we need the N10 and all other Android tablets to sell well to really get the developers attention.

I think there will be a great amount of N10 owners but I could be wrong. Judging from how fast the N10 sold out, I feel like it's going to sell pretty damn well even if it doesn't make record high sales.
The thing I wanted to do was make a list of apps that absolutely need some kind of tablet optimization. This thread is to raise some awareness and see if people are willing to join in.

The N10 is a look at the future. Though it will never sell in the mass millions, it will influence the market. Next-gen 10" tablets from Samsung, Asus, etc will be 2560x1600 too, midrange will be 1080p, and 1280x800 will be reserved for the low end and 7" market.
So a wise developer might want to get on the "HD" train early, so the apps are there and waiting for the more mainstream users when they pick one of those new devices up at Best Buy or Tesco, etc.
Which is of course what Google is hoping for.

Want to promote app using only 10$ budget. Suggestions?

I want to promote my app but I only have a budget of 10$. I am not seeking to become flappy bird overnight, I just want to increase the number of users so my admob reaches its payout threshold earlier.
My app already has organic downloads with total installs being 1400, ads current installs being 170.
I have 2 options: Facebook and admob. I know that admob has a good reputation in the field but at the same time its cost for premium countries is around 1$ per click.
On the other hand, Facebook also seems pricey but it looks convincing due to the amount of users willing to (or tricked into) clicking on its ads, and I could also get organic downloads if I run the campaign right.
So what's your experience? Please share with me.
This is an area where many Developers struggle when it comes on to promoting their app. And there isn't really an easy answer.
There are many factors that runs with this; such as, the type of APP you are promoting, Target audience etc. But to answer your question blindly, is your Budget $10 per day or $10 overall ?, if it's overall, then I'd suggest using Google Adwords.. I tested them with a 19$ budget and I gained over 100 installs.
This is the app. All installs are organic.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appsbyusman.simplecolorwallpaper
Which app did you promote? 100 installs for 19$ seems like a really good deal. Also, could you please tell me which countries you targeted? I want to target premium countries so i'll eventually get premium cpc from in app ads. But then I think that if i am earning at high cpc rates then i'll also have to pay for high cpc as well.
My budget is 10$ overall.
Hi everyone, if you are a mobile App Developer/ owner but looking for the best and easiest network to monetize or promote your app and make the most out of it,then worry no more. The best Mobile App monetization and promotion network i came across so far which even pays you $120 sign up bonus, instant approval and you can request payout for your earning anytime. The network is a mobile ad and pay per install network. When you sign up Today and activate their ad in your mobile App you will receive the $120 bonus provided your APP has generated only 1000 ad impression after joining the network, but if you are an Advertiser and only want to promote your App, then you will need to Deposit $100 to get $200 in total to promote your App. You can get your App install through promotion for as low as $0.05 per install. You can join the Network here mbsy.co/fvLtT

I plan to buy a prototype of oppo find x,with mysterious specs!! is it a good deal?!

So, I want to buy a piece of find x from a local seller, he sent me the pictures below, and the least I can say is that the datasheet is a surprise! What do you think ?
I add that it is a particular seller, and he claims to have obtained the sample in France via a parent to him, it can help understand?
* another detail, which is not on the photos, with the CPU info application downloaded on the play store, in the hardware part I get an SDM630! and in the storage pane I have 4GB of memory used and 8GB of total memory, contrary to what the shortcuts "about the phone" indicates and contrary to what I receive with the application CPU Z info, whose results are On the photos
finally, on one of the photos there is a crack on the back of the phone, what will be the best price at which I can buy it?
thank you.

D/L the app AIDA 64 to get an even better idea of what the phone actually has inside.
It may lack some components that would make the phone less desirable to own.
Myself, I wouldn't spend any money on it at all. However, if you like to collect items/one-offs such as this, start out with an offer of 1/4 of retail & go from there....

I couldn't guess a price until after I was assured the phone has the same functionality as the one available to the general public.
If it's a store demo, more than likely the functionality is crippled.
Even with full functionality, I wouldn't offer any more than 25% of whatever retailers are selling it for in your area.....

I'll add this & I'm done:
At minimum, you're dealing with someone who sells counterfeit/knockoff phones.
But, if you're convinced this is a prototype , it's likely been stolen,no way in Hell Oppo would approve..... discussion of buying such a phone in the forums is certainly frowned upon by the Admin/Staff here @ XDA......

Accept the phone only if the seller will give it to you for nothing along with further compensating you in the form of hard cash; for wasting your time. Seriously, purchase only if you feel you must prove a sucker is born every minute.
What's wrong with this guy
Use logical reasoning and common sense my friend
hello guys, do not get upset, it's not my fault if I was lucky to find a piece of the flagship for almost nothing, the seller gave me the monster yesterday against a payment equivalent to $ 45, so I had the time to explore it and the results will surprise you even more than the price that it cost me I leave you with the pictures !

Please recommend a minimum 3GB 32GB Box that doesn't Overheat!!!

I've had various boxes over the years and virtually all of them have had heat issues that required some sort of modification to mitigate the heat they suffer from. One of the fundamental problems is poor design with no ventilation whatsoever, form over function so to speak.
I don't care what the damn thing looks like as long as it has some ventilation and doesn't OVERHEAT!!
My budget is anything below $100. Thanks in advance.
