[Q] Pop3 Email being deleted bug? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Recently I set up my work POP3 email address on my Nexus 5 on 4.4.2 in the stock email app. I set it to never delete email from the server, as I use Thunderbird at work and want ALL my email there. This seem to work fine until I went away for a few days. I received emails on the phone just fine. When I got back to work I opened Thunderbird and it found no new email on the server. I thought this was strange. On checking my phone, those emails I had received over the few days had disappeared - not in inbox where I left the, not in trash folder. I double checked my POP3 server again - not there either. Somehow I had lost all these emails without ever deleting them on my phone, or receiving them into Thunderbird (which is set to delete emails from the server on receiving them). Last week I went away again, and received lots of emails through the week on my phone, most I did not read and left in my inbox - there were probably 40 or so emails on my phone. This morning I come in, open Thunderbird expecting all my emails from the week to come in and nothing - just two emails from yesterday. Open my phone - NOTHING, just the same two emails from yesterday. An entire weeks worth of email has disappeared from my phone and the server (even though the phone has been set to NEVER delete from server).
Anyone got any idea what is causing this? I have now turned off sync because I can't afford to lose mass emails like this, driving me crazy.
TIA,
Ben

[Q] Strange email issue - Downloads "all" emails from Yahoo server

I have configured my Yahoo acct to download emails from last 30 days. It does fine for few hours/days. All of a sudden, I would have 1000+ emails in my email view and still downloading. The phone starts downloading "all" my messages from Yahoo server by itself and goes unresponsive until it has downloaded all the emails.
Then, I use 'Clear Yahoo' option to delete all the emails (this option deletes all Yahoo emails from the phone ONLY and not from the server). After few minutes, when the phone syncs with the Yahoo server, it then downloads only emails of last 30 days. But that's only until it starts to download your entire inbox, which may be in few hours or days.
Has anyone else encountered this?
It is annoying and any help/fix for this issue is appreciated.
ROM - I have the version offered by T-mobile 2 months ago.
Thanks.

Emails not showing up

Anyone have any idea what might be the cause of this?
I Use Gmail and My University email, both sync to my notebook and my phone. Never had a problem with either before or after the 2.1 update until about a week or so ago. I use the stock X10 mail program (not the Gmail app) and all of the settings were not changed. The emails sync fine to my notebook so the mail providers are fine. I have it set to notify and check every 5 mins. I will get emails on my notebook and for hours it wont sync with my phone, until I actually go into the mail program.

[Q]Continues Email Notifications

I have a weird problem. I have setup my gmail account with the Samsung Email app. Everything is fine. I updated to KE7 and now there is this weird thing that is happening. Every now and again I keep getting email notifications and they dont stop even though there are no new emails. It seems to only happen on my GMAIL account. I have my hotmail and my office email configured as well.
Also this only happens on the Samsung email client, I do not get notifications from the standard GMAIL application. The only remedy that works is to delete the account and re-add it again.
Anyone has an idea why this is happening or anyone else experienced this before?
Happened to me too! As you said, I deleted the account and re-inserted it after! it worked!
I also disabled automatic sync when in wifi through the email app settings
Anyways, I don't know either!
OK must be a bug then. Weird but annoying as happened to me again moments ago, left my phone and came back, 38 New Email notifications when there was none lol

old emails reloading as unread

Is anyone else having this problem?
Using the samsung email app .In the email settings for the account I have set the "Recent Messages" to 25 (the same thing happens if I set it to any other number except "total").* When I receive a new email & delete it, the 26th email moves back up to 25th & the mail app brings it in as a new unread email again. My htc desire allowed me to set it by number of days old, but I don't see this as an option on the S3.**I really don't want to set it to "Total" & have every email that I've ever received but haven't deleted show up on my*phone.
It's driving me nuts.
Thanks
It's happening on my mate's s3 too. Anyone else?
Is it deleted on your email account as well? I had this issue when I got my S3, too.
There's an option within the mail app, where you can toggle to delete those mails from your email account, when you delete them inside the app.
The default setting on my S3 was, that it's only deleted inside the app, but not from my mail.
I hope this helps.
Settings>App manager>email app>clear cache
Or go to recovery and wipe cache/fix permissions

S4 Old Emails Return, Sync
Hello,
I have seen that many, many folks are having problems with this. Posts all over the place on android central and many other places.
I have had this problem intermittently over time and have tried different things.
In the past, I just deleted the old emails and typically no more problem for some time.
Recently the problem returned.
Deleting the old emails did not get rid of them. Essentially, you see emails pop up as new at the bottom of your S4 android email box. They are old emails.
I tried the following.
Deleting old emails, older emails just show up as new, unread.
Deleting the actual emails in your box is not good if you want to keep them. If you use this method you'd have to delete them all. I don't want this.
Delete all emails from your pop3 email and set your android mail to delete from server. I don't want this. I want to keep them on the server. I should be able to.
Set the android email to 25, didn't help. Set the android email to total and then delete or move them to trash, didn't help.
Delete and reconfigure the email box. Didn't work.
I am currently trying a fix for my comcast email I have always used pop3 style setup on the stock android email setup. Today I deleted my email box and reconfigured it as IMAP and set the security as SSL. It seems to work, but I will repost if it doesn't . Setting to TSL, the mail wouldn't load. Setting to no security with IMAP, wouldn't load an email. SSL seems to be the only way.
Good luck!

[Q] IMAP Email Gone?

Greets all,
Was wondering if anyone might have this issue. I setup my phone to grab my emails, I set it up as an IMAP so that this way I could get the emails but keep it on the server, so this way I can download it on my computer into outlook later on. Up until the One max, I never had an issue and always set it up the same way, I recently just noticed that after I read a email and if I delete it from the phone it seems to delete it off the server as well. I tested this out by sending myself an email and then deleting it, then going into outlook to receive the email but it wasnt there. If I got into the server its in the deleted folder and not in the inbox as it should be.
Anyone else notice this?
Well I just tried something else, I just set it up as a POP account, and it works as IMAP, Hmmm I wonder if they messed up and named them wrong, where Imap is suppose to be pop and pop is suppose to be IMAP.
Still curious to see others responses.
When i click Add account, it shows Other(POP/IMAP)
Screen shot attached for your reference, what do you get?
Same thing except I dont have Gmail or Yahoo in the list, just the other three, but thats not where the problem is, its after you pick Other/pop3. Long story short: I have my own email, I set it up through aol a long time ago when they were giving away domain names for free, then they dropped it and I had to get it registered through another place to keep it, but I still can use aol's mail settings in outlook to get me mail. The problem is I can see the email on aol's site, and download it to my outlook, but the first way I set it up on the phone I would see it on the phone and then delete it, when I go into outlook it would say no mail, but if I went to aol's site and looked in the trash it was in there where its not suppose to be, its suppose to be in the inbox to be downloaded to my outlook. But when I changed the setting to pop setting, it is working as Imap should.

Ah okay, i got your problem... i don't know why imagined that you PC was missing IMAP, but was that not the IMAP was supposed to work..., 2 way communication = IMAP
POP vs IMAP
If you're trying to decide between using POP and IMAP, we encourage you to use IMAP.
Unlike POP, IMAP offers two-way communication between your web Gmail and your email client. This means when you log in to Gmail using a web browser, actions you perform on email clients and mobile devices (ex: putting mail in a 'work' folder) will instantly and automatically appear in Gmail (ex: it will already have a 'work' label on that email the next time you sign in).
IMAP also provides a better method to access your mail from multiple devices. If you check your email at work, on your mobile phone, and again at home, IMAP ensures that new mail is accessible from any device at any given time.
Finally, IMAP offers a more stable experience overall. Whereas POP is prone to losing messages or downloading the same messages multiple times, IMAP avoids this through two-way syncing capabilities between your mail clients and your web Gmail.

Okay you missed the whole point here. When I chose IMAP with my email on my phone, and then delete it from the inbox (select and hit trash can) its suppose to delete from the phone inbox, but should show up as new in my outlook 2010 on my pc as new. It doesnt show up at all. If I go to a web browser and login into my email, its in my trash folder and not in my inbox as it should be.
Now if I change the setting on the phone FROM IMAP to POP, THEN is works correctly as IMAP.
they way i have always thought of imap to work is , as the other poster mentioned: 2 way communication.
if i delete mail on the phone (imap), then on my web based email, that same email will be deleted there.
if i move an email from , say, inbox to some other folder on my phone, then on the server it too will get moved there.
this is how imap is supposed to work? at least that is how it has worked for me over the years...
i have 4 email accounts on my own email server. i use gmail to fetch that mail and i also use my web based interface to access it. the mail is synced everywhere its supposed to be.
i have the all set to imap, not pop.

me too... yes that's how IMAP works, i am guessing OP has some little confusion on it..
I do understand this, but coming from a samsung galaxy note, this wasnt the case. On computers it did work this way, but every phone I've had and including the Note did not work this way, this is the first time its functioning this way, which I thought was odd.
