Hi everyone! I'm new here so please don't eat me alive!
I recently got a ZU and it has come to my attention that X-reality Engine isn't that great after all the hype I've seen all over the internet. Perhaps it's just me, but coming from a person that deals with images on a computer screen on a daily basis (graphic designer) the processing by this so called "engine" really doesn't do video any justice. For me, even with the brightness low at 60% there is so much grain from the over sharpening and contrast increase that it's unbearable and in effect find the default "off" engine so much more superior. Is the Bravia 2 engine any better? I was under the impression that X-reality was an update from Bravia 2's shortcomings? Does anyone else agree with me on this stance that X-reality engine is a pointless ploy for sony to combat Samsung's over-saturation of screen graphics?
To me X-Reality really shines with high-resolution contents (i.e., at least 720p, preferrably 1080p). If you try viewing 1080p videos on YouTube there is a good chance that you will like having it enabled. For lower-res contents the over-sharpening does make it much much worse compared to simple bilinear filtering though.
Yup, I'll have to agree. It looks good on HD stuff (like the Smurfs trailer), but it looks absolutely dreadful if you decide to watch some SD Seinfeld episodes with it enabled.

I've never rooted before, but pretty scared that I'lll brick it or something! Plus I have a Mac, and from some minor research I've done it seems that all the rooting programs are made for windoze.
And by the way, which mods are you talking about?

Haha! I actually tried watching a 4K video on the phone with X-reality on, was decent and definitely sharper but perhaps it's just me but I don't like too high of a contrast let alone high sharpening on videos I'm viewing.

It's pretty hard to hard brick a Sony phone, so don't be scared. I can't really see why you should go through with rooting though. You're willing to do it so you can try some other video/photo "enhancements", that might actually make you "regret" it all? (not that rooting is bad or anything, but you may end up in situations that you don't want to be in). I wouldn't root unless there are some other stuff you'd like to do with your Ultra.
Questions.
- Have you rooted anything before?
- Do you know what rooting is?
- Are there any software stuff you'd like to change?
I'm sorry if these questions seem a little silly, but i have no idea what level you're at with only 3 posts. You might know a lot, and you've been lurking around here for years, or you came straight in here last week knowing nothing. I don't know The reason i ask is, i and a lot of people around here don't want to be tech support in case anything goes to hell, or you have no idea what you're doing next week and you delete some system files I don't want to be here when that happens

In all honesty, I have never rooted anything before. I came from a samsung mega which I wanted to root because I found out that I could not get rid of the bloatware unless rooted, and moreover I wanted to install Cyanogenmod- as I hate the samsung UI. On my ZU I would like to have the power to install apps/ move apps to SD, and also I have Limpus Battery (I think it's called) which needs to have root access to enable some power optimisation when battery is low or something.
I have a fair idea what rooting is and forgive me but isn't it like jailbreaking because you're accessing parts of your phone that isn't ready accessible to the general consumer? Pardon my crass differentiation but to me it's similar- could be totally wrong though! Haha! I've jailbroken my iPhones before so I'm pretty sure I'm capable of doing it.
I think I will leave it be. I've just set the setting for X-reality off when watching low/standard def videos and usually turn it on when watching HD, but weirdly enough I always find myself switching over to default off- perhaps it's just my preference?

Rooting is the same as jailbreaking, both achieve administrator access the the system portion of the os. If you do want to root, it's straightforward but make sure you read all the stickies before doing anything.
There's an app called tasker in which you can automate pretty much anything based on location, time and various other criteria, so for instance you could automate X-reality being turned on at a certain time or wifi to turn on when at home. I believe it will work for most things without root, and worth a look.
There isn't all that much you really need root for on a Z ultra so perhaps list your needs, you may find you don't even need root.
Sent from my C6833 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I haven't touched Windows since the 90's and I manage to root OK! FlashTool and the SDK are all you need and are available for Mac. "Linux" commands also usually work unaltered.
PS - get a Samba app for your Xperia and it will show up on your home network like any other computer. Great way of syncing over folders on your Mac.
In my opinion X-reality should be shut off at all times. It's only extra processing that should have been taken care of on the original source anyway. Why add extra processing that destroys the authors vision when creating it. Granted some amateur stuff could probably benefit some from it at times. But still it's only a software gimmick. You won't see the true source as intended. It's like heavily equalizing the sound on music. And no I don't use any of the sound "enhancements" either.

The xperia 10 mini is a neat little device but the rom developed by S/E sucks, which is not unexpected: my target users basically hate the design of mobiles with the emphasis on apps, games, wireless ("expensive") broadband, social media etc. I get the "I just want a phone" litany all the time. So I''m sketching up screen mock ups to slim the *entire* ui down to fundamentals - telephony, sms, contacts, notifications, etc. and fairly unadorned access to the other hardware goodies: gps, camera, whatever else it has. High contrast high legibility for the smaller screen and big thumbs, older eyes, sunlight, polarizing shades, movement, distance viewing. All just common sense stuff of NO INTEREST to mass markets. But it is great that Android at last throws up the possibility of getting exactly the phone you want, and no more.
Anyway, design is one thing, partially-rewriting and recompiling a rom another ... does anyone know of rom developers that would take on a ui-spec project? THis is not just about commenting functionality out or skinning; the whole look and feel changes. I saw cyanogen's reading list elsewhere and wilted. It'd take me a year, someone brighter could do it in a month (guessing...hoping...or is this stuff all so new I should just make it my hobby and tinker away for a year??).
Sorry if this request for info is in the wrong place. Cheers.

why people are so concerned about download & cpu speeds on their SGS2?
5mbps or 8mbps or 3mbps... all those posts "I can't get over 4mbps, what to do?"... "what APN to use"... I bet while doing average browsing, it's un-noticeable, whether site loads in 2sec or 2.5sec. Even when streaming video online, I never had interruptions. why people so concerned about speed then?
Or CPU overclocking - what kinda apps/tasks are out there that make SGS2 sluggish on default clock?
Am I missing something?
</grouchy>
The quest to make your phone the best it can be.
The biggest reason people buy new things: to be better, faster, do cooler things.
Take mpg in a car as an example. Many people assume it is what it is (majority of smartphone users, and iPhone users)
But then there's the people that want the most they can get. Regularly check the filters, make sure the tires are at the 'ideal' psi, compare different brands of oil. Even change how they drive.
Is it to save money? Sure. But the ones that really stick to doing all those things, do it because they really love their car and only want the best for it.
It becomes more than a way to be a responsible driver, it becomes a hobby. For some a passion.
And that's the main reason xda-developers.com even started.

Hey app devs out there,
I just looked for a simple but powerfull calculator via the android market. Found nothing but the "old school" ones.
Yeah, there are tons of calculators out there, one has more abilities than the other. But thats not what I am looking for!
I am WORKING with my windows7 laptop, word2010 and microsoft's math4. Give it a try and you will see why I love this combination that damn much!
I am studying machanical engineering, so I need some features more than others, but the biggest thing is it must be as written on paper, that is what word2010+math4 gives me!
I write the fractions just as I would write them on paper, right after x^4/y^2 and space it is shown to me not in that freaky oldschool style, like excel still does.
So, why not have such an calculator on android? That would give many high mathematic working people a chance to get rid of windows, get an tablet (for me still an GalaxyAce) with android and a powerfull but easy to handle calculator.
As I have no clue about programming, it would take me months just to get the first lines, but this job realy needs enthusiasts to get it the way I mind it.
So, if any of you here knows where to place this request, please help me out. There must be sitting some super brains waiting for another challange, this would be a huge one!

I also came across the same need. It is pretty strange that on google play there is no such scientific calculator app available. I mean, the "natural display" feature would really be usefull, particulary on big screen devices. Anyone knows if such an app has been developer since DaBigFreak opened this thread?

Hahahaha I definitely didn't expect to get a response from a 3 year old thread That's great to hear. You guys were actually part of the reason why we decided to develop this app - I ran into the same problem and was amazed at how there were zero natural display scientific calculators on the store, while the Apple Store had tons. We're continually updating the app at the moment and just added programmable constants! If you could leave a review that would mean a lot to me :fingers-crossed:

Before that, I'd love to see integrals, sum and matrizes. Then you can essentially do anything you want or that could be done.
Next big thing would be to make variables calculating available. Not storing a certain number as A, B, or C, but let the calculator solve an non-number equation to a specific variable.
Right behind that, setting up variables with a value, so you can define A:=5.0, B:=2*A and the equation only has A and B, the calculator gives the results.

All the things you've asked for are being worked on at the moment, but understandably it will be months before they're actually implemented. At the moment we really need traction to increase the visibility of our app, otherwise there's really no incentive for us to continue developing if it's going to be buried underneath thousands of crappy calculator apps on the Play Store That's why reviews and ratings are so important to us. We do take into account the many features that our users request, they'll all sitting in a document, slowly being ticked off one by one
Should I switch my 5s to and s5? I mean the iPhone is great and all. The apps, UI, everything seems reliable and quick. Especially the apps, its more functional than android. I understand because its easier creating apps for iPhone. Developers don't have to worry about tons of sizes, version of OS... So i get it. But android feels more fun and you can do many things that iPhone alone cant. iPhone feels like jail, and it just doesn't entertain me. So should i switch?

Well naturally we all here believe android is the way to go...but whether s5 is the right phone to switch over to is another story. S5 is a great phone but I suggest you wait a couple months..there are a some additional android phones in the pipeline for the very near future (s5 prime, m8 prime, G3, note 4) along with iphone 6 coming out ...so I suggest you wait a little bit for those to compare.
Been flashing since 2008. The Samsung S5 is the first device that I just might never even bother rooting. The battery life is unreal. The new touchwiz is fresh and cleaner looking. Th3 phone itself (at least for me) is snappy as hell. The camera is absolutely gorgeous. Also sending video, 1080p movies and photos to my Samsung tv is priceless.

I would. I don't agree with your iOS apps are better than android apps statement though. They used to be, but now there really isn't a difference. Yeah, some apps look terrible because the dev is too lazy to follow android standards, but the most popular apps are all the same now.
Anyway, my s5 has no issues at all. It's fast, the fingerprint sensor works over 90% of the time with one hand, and no signal issues.
I've tried both and I find Android to be much less intrusive. It doesn't want to be my friend, doesn't want my personal info, and so on. Otherwise I agree with Mr. Brown above. Mine doesn't need any tweaking at all.

When I was doing Apple I had to put in an email, bank card, sexual preference, yadda yadda way more times than I was comfortable with. Seems like everything costs and everything required personal information. With Android I use my gmail account (minimum data) and can get into Pandora, Youtube, and a bunch of other service and products for no charge and no repeated follow up.

True and that does't bother me as much as getting asked for it repeatedly. There IS not personal data on the net or in electronics, I just don't want to be bothered.
There is a thread in the stickies to talk about upgrading. Please use that.

What do you think? Since MM Doze never really officially worked, Nougat's "enhanced" Doze barely works.
I'm wondering what happend to Google? They release half working internal official releases. Has the Developers been there too long? Too tired to care make something great? Or is Google just hiring Developers that want to get their foot in the door with no experience?
Just something to think about as I'm seeing a fall in android which is very disappointing, I mean after 5 previews and an offical release you really cannot fix the Android System bug thats using same % as screen? Pretty embarrassing on Google if you ask me.
Been android quite awhile it was doing great but they just cant get it together anymore?

On a serious note though, I disagree with pretty much everything you said.
Doze is working completely fine, and so is everything else.
There is no such "fall" in Android. As far as I know, pretty much everything is rising.

There is already a general Android discussion section.
This thread reminds me of a galaxy Black Hole!
Google's not perfect but they allow indie developers freedom. Steve Jobs wanted the ipad to be an extension of the user but then he had specific ideas for how that user should behave. Apple says we know whats best for you, while Google says "go ahead and get that tatoo. We might think its a poor decision but its your body!"
Ill stop rambling here. I like freedom and SOMETIMES that means things wont always go smooth.
Back to the topic--never had issues with doze either.

google sucks they treat their user base as a bunch of alpha testers
they never fix anything , they are a bunch of cheap money grubbers who will not spend money to hire people from the first world none of their developers can even be toilet trained how do you expect them to be able to be trained to develop software?
of course the low level 3rd world developers are not even nearly as bad at the higher ups who are supposed to be managing and designing
nothing they do makes any sense they are all a bunch of severely autistic retarded sperglords with zero real world social skills or experience
besides them leaving critical things broken for months to years like FRP and google maps navigation
they just are very poor at design in general and lack any common sense
everything they do is @SS backwards AF
most basic common sense features are not even included , whenever they do do something right they decide to make change for the sake of change and break it again

so just because i am not a android fanboy i must be an IOS fanboy
uh no, i give criticism where it is due, and there is plenty due for both
IOS is more polished and they do not put out releases in an alpha state though
and both of these companies are getting suckier and suckier by the minute
removing features instead of adding more and screwing over consumers and their user bases
and the fan boys on both sides just beg for more abuse , oh yes remove my SD slot , my removable battery , my IR blaster, my headphone jack ,my front facing stereo speakers, a ton of useful software features,
just take my money you can do no wrong
i like IOS but i hate having to use itunes it really is the "software equivalent of cancer" tim cook spoke about
IOS sucks too, memory is full, ok i'll just delete some videos and free up space . NOPE, backup and restore with itunes , it will work if you are lucky
android is awful too
broken security a 2yo could get past ,not fixed in almost a year now
broken google maps navigation not fixed in years
backwards user account system with more broken security
lacking even the most basic common sense convince features
many default settings set to where they will cause annoyance and problems for users
i can honestly say i hate them both ,and there is really no excuse for either one of them both of these comapnies have more money than god yet continue to produce garbage and be cheap F***s when it comes to R&D
they both love to employ bottom of the barrel 3rd world labor to pinch every penny but google is worse in that respect
choosing between IOS and android is like being asked to chose between cancer and aids

Please edit your post and remove the comment about Cancer and Aids. That line was completely uncalled for and extremely inappropriate. Also please edit out the cuss words you have in your post that you masked from the editor. It's against XDA policy as we have kids that come on here. If you want to cuss, please use the * symbol on your keyboard.
While I understand your strong feelings towards Google, may I ask why such strong feelings? Were you passed up on being hired by them? It's just that it's not every day you get to see someone post such strong words against a company that they merely purchased or didn't purchase products from. Seems like there's some personal stuff going on there.

You seem to have a good understanding of how these things should work.
So when can we expect to see gdroid666 OS on our smartphones?

Nothing like completely biased, unsubstantiated, blanket claims. You can easily like or dislike anything about Google or Android, but to just say they know nothing about design demonstrates your absolute ignorance on digital design or how it is accomplished.

probably never
people who can code have no common sense and people with common sense can't code
or it is just bad upper level management
i can give specific examples of glaringly obvious bad design mistakes ,but of course they will never be fixed
googles multi user account system implemented in lolipop is just awful
here is why
there is no way to hand off ownership account status to another user ,you have to wipe and factory restore the device, i found this out when setting up a tablet for a parent with my account and having to start over
but why? this makes no sense what so ever , all they had to do is just make an option to transfer ownership account status to another user account on the device, log in under primary owner account go to settings, select pass ownership status to another user select user, there done would that have been so hard?
also multi user relies on lock screen passwords instead of just prompting for the google user account password to switch between users on the device, forcing everyone using the device to use a lock screen password and to enter it every time the device goes to sleep, this is very annoying especially when using a tablet which the multi user account was ostensibly designed to be used for since typically you do not share a phone, it just makes no sense at all
also smart lock trusted devices is another mess
i figured i would just use my mi band to unlock the tablet then, but even when you set up a trusted device to use smartlock it just disables itself after "inactivity" so after few hour you have to reset it again ,no option to keep it the way you set it, turned on
it's just common sense things like this that get really annoying
also no inversion of volume rocker buttons when in landscape mode
little common sense things like this
a company with unlimited funds and unlimited resourced should not be making ridiculously obvious design mistakes like these
nor should they be leaving such major things broken for years like google maps navigation and FRP security

how am i biased when i just said IOS is just as bad, i said the whole industry is headed in a bad direction
samsung, HTC, apple, all of them are making bad decisions
Doze is outstanding in Nougat. I got 5+ hours of SoT over a 38 hour period so yes, obviously, Nougat is total crap and Doze doesn't do anything...
^^^sarcasm^^^
...I do find it amazing that I can get endurance like that with no, as in zero, attempt to optimize battery drain (WiFi on, GPS on high, adaptive display on, BT on, bone stock, no root, etc.) while others are reporting problems. Regardless, all I can go by is that my 6P is not only just the best phone I ever had (last one was Note 5 that go worse with MM), it got even better with Nougat!
