wow thats pretty amazing. very tempting too. but with all the progress on kitkat its hard to go back. plus 30 bucks on sale when i only paid 99 to begin with is a bit steep never mind 40 if you dont get it on special. i will watch it though and see how it progresses. :good:
I actually just bought it for 19. My tablet needs to be formatted and webos reinstall but I think I like webos with some android apps. I'll try it for a month and keep reporting

Still playing with ACL. Some applications run smooth but the biggest problem im finding is there is no internet connection for some applications like facebook.

I find this surprising, I liked Webos but I thought it had been discontinued.
Webos is discontinued. Acl for webos is a software that allows you to run android apps in webos.

So what is your impression of ACL so far? I really want to buy it because I love how long the battery lasts in Webos, but I'm afraid of it being incredibly buggy and broken. I wish they had some sort of demo version to try.
Bunch of questions about apps for you;
1)Are Android browsers quick with great touch sensitivity? My biggest gripe with Webos is the browser speed. Android's is so much faster.
2)By any chance do you play Clash of Clans? Wondering if that runs well too.
3)Have you run into any major hurdles? Like were you able to install ACL and have everything work pretty well out of the box or is running Android still that much better. Be honest.
Sorry for the late reply, I haven't used it in the last week or so. For 19 bucks it's not to terrible of a purchase but just installing android is the way to go. It's somewhat laggy, the android version must be ice cream sandwich and most of the apps you might want you will have to look online and find the apk. Some apks won't even work and some of the ones that do don't have an Internet connection. It's more of a hassle.

If they update it and make it a bit faster and fix the Internet it could work well beside webos

Seriously thank you so much for your input!! I was about to buy it, but their website gave me an error on that one day, so instead I uninstalled whatever version of Android I had on my TP and updated it to the latest along with reflashing the A6 firmware and I'm quite happy with it and battery drain is very very minimal.
I want to like ACL so much, but from what I've been reading everywhere it's not going to be like it is in my mind.
I've got a secondary TouchPad I might drop the cash and try this out. I too like WebOS, but am very happy with my CM11 device running 4.4 with the 3.4 kernel.
Tempting to say the least.

ACL Activation
Sir myself Tejinder and i am doing dental DDS.
I cant afford to buy license for activation ..
Can somebody please share activation key foe ACL Touchpad.
I shall be very thankful to U .
I got an email for a 7 day trial. But I lost interest after installing cyanogenmod and then buying a Nexus 7.
So, it's not worth the money?
I'm using CM10 and it's working well, but I still prefer Webos over Android, except for certain apps (specially adobe reader... in Webos are some pdf that don't open correctly and are going well with "PDF Reader" in Android)
Thanks!

Same here! It was fine for a while after I disabled the ripple effect. But starts slowing down again. Its one of the main reasons I keep getting back to android. WebOS has nice interface.

Yea but until wifi issues are fixed (unless I didn't read enough) on cm7 I may hold off bbefore putting android on it. Web os is sweet but its plain left out when it comes to apps. I feel ripped off actually lol.

Wi fi is not perfect on cm7 but is working well enough to not have to use web os. You are missing out since Android is working great even in an alpha stage. There is no reason to not give it a try since there is no risk in doing so.
HTC Vision(G2)/meXdroidmod
Ghost Chili AIO
No problems on WebOS keyboard; I kind of like it better than the stock android keyboards.
As for CM7 Android, it's definitely still an alpha product; it is great if you don't have any problems, but if you do, you are just out of luck. I had no problems with Alpha 2 with Xron's great package 1.37, but alpha 3 with Xron's 3.3 package gives me wifi nightmares. I've seen a few posts with problems like mine - the wifi has to be re-enabled after every boot - also, my wifi drops the connection after 3 or 4 minutes. Kills me because otherwise it is so great. I'd recommend trying it - maybe you'll be like most people and won't have any of the wifi problems.
iirc the breif reading i did so far its a dual boot? so i dont really lose webos at all and can boot into either OS?

Correct. You do not lose web os if you install cm7. That is the beauty of the touchpad. Two operating systems available in one tablet. You have a choice on which to use on demand.

One of the things I like about the webOS keyboard is the accuracy of it, but there is indeed some lag when typing in some forms.
Also, Shift + Enter actually works on the webOS keyboard unlike all Android soft keyboards it's useful for the facebook site or entering a new line
And the webOS browser renders full pages better than most Android browsers as well
I've noticed that android keyboard works ligtyears better for me and typing and zero lag.
Typing seems good for me on WebOS. Sometimes taps seem a little off, but I'm not sure if it's me or not. Anywho, you may want to check out some of the patches in preware. There are some to address scrolling speed and you can disable the ripple effect on clicks.
Personally, I really like WebOS and haven't bothered with the CM7 alpha's yet (I do have two other Android devices in the house though -- one a Nook running CM7, so I know what's out there).
Hey guys so i just got a shipment notification so I'll be picking up my touchpad tonight.
Where should i start?
Install Android? I'm very comfortable with Android.
install another operating system?
Good apps? Games?
Looking for a good browser.
Basically any recommendations for a touchpad noob I'd appreciate.
Thanks a lot
Congrats!
Honestly, I would try out WebOS for a while. I was surprised how much I liked it. I haven't bothered to install Android (this coming from an Android phone and Nook Color with CM7). For starters, do a system update to get the latest WebOS version. Then, make sure everything works (ie. don't go and void your warranty right away ). There are some free apps you may as well peruse and download in the HP App Catalog.
It's not really necessary anymore since the latest OS update brought a lot of performance improvements, but you may want to check out the Preware patches once you're satisfied with the hardware.
I don't think there are too many other OS options yet aside from CM7. However, ICS, Ubuntu, and Windows 8 are all good possibilities in the future.
FWIW, the stock WebOS browser is so-so. There are a few patches to add some features, but it's still a sore spot compared to all of the options on Android (why can't WebOS get Opera or Dolphin?!). That said, it does handle most pages very well.
Thanks for all the good info!
System updates, are those done via computer or ota?
I assume most software changes such as adding cm7 can be undone for warranty purposes?
I have cm7 on my desire hd so i should be able to use wifi hotspot on my phone and pick it up on the touchpad?
Usually i like to do a bit more research on a device but i got caught up in a $99 black Friday sale so i panicked and bought
The system updates can be done OTA. I believe you can do them through the computer too though if it's easier, or you run into any issues. There is an app/settings pane in the menu to do it.
For the most part -- yeah you should be able to revert to stock if you need to. I'm not sure what breadcrumbs all the patches and CM7, etc, leave behind, but it should be possible. There's something called WebOS Doctor that should be able to restore as well. That said, HP's support has so far seemed incredible for a discontinued product, so it might not even be a problem unless the mods really did break it.
I think wifi tethering should be ok, but I can't say for sure. I think there is a thread somewhere around here about that or ad-hoc networking.
Lol... I know what you mean. I bought mine during the fire sale weekend with barely an idea of what I would do with it.
So i got my new toy last night. Everything is working good. Did the system update on webos ota. Seems like a pretty cool OS. I did find it slightly laggy though while scrolling, surfing, loading programs. I also installed cm7, only took about 10 mins and it's an OS I'm more comfortable working in (plus i needed dolphin browser for proper tabs, i wanted to pull my hair after surfing with the Web OS "tabs"). For being in alpha stages i must say it's very usable.
What are some reasonable expectations on battery life? Webos or Android, standby or "heavy" use?
All in I'm quite happy with my initial testing, especially for the price!

Is it possible to totally remove webos from the touchpad and install Android only? Would be nice to have the maximum storage space available. Thanks all.
I wouldn't want to remove webOS. I've been an Android user for a pretty long time, but find that I like webOS better.
In Cyanogen's original post, introducing their android port, they address this and say that webOS should be left on the tablet.
Actually it's pretty neat having dualboot, you get the best of both worlds. But to each their own. I haven't run across any posts that address this, but if I do, I'll post the link.
They wouldn't nuke webos because the android OS is still in alpha, so if anything should happen you'd be left with a dumb tablet.
Sent from my LG-P925
Definitely like the dual boot, prefer it that way!!
I wish I could ditch WebOS, waste of space on my tab, not booted into it since the day Alpha 1 was released and have no intention of ever booting into WebOS again.
Not a good idea to nuke webOS just yet as we do not have a stable release of any Android distribution yet.

Another thing to think about is that portions of webos are necessary right now for booting cm7. Removing webos completely would result in a brick. Just sayin......

I tried CM7 and Xron's take on it. I didn't think I was going to because I have a 4.3" android phone, no desire to see that experience scaled and stretched. I immediately saw I was right. Gingerbread does not lend itself to tablets well, IMO.
The first thing I did in android? Googled "moboot default webOS." I will leave it on there in the event I absolutely want to watch netflix or something. I just feel that the cards, and multi-tasking gestures in webOS is so much more intuitive.
I would try a Honeycomb build or ICS, but I just don't find a buggy phone OS a good fit for a tablet. Not that I'm complaining, its an alpha build, but even smooth and stable, I would not want 2.3 on here.

afaik CM-Release states that WebOS hardly takes up any space so it would be dumb to ditch it just for space issues?
Don't plan on removing web os. The more I learn the more I think I can wait on a stable Android Port to live along side web os.

yep thats my point too. great developement. stable and responsive alpha. but it still feels like a stretched phone os. webos feels so much more tablet optimized.
Well, we understand that it is just Alpha builds. However, going on about how you do not want to wipe WebOS because of Alpha/Beta/Not Tablet Roms, doesn't help. It is just a personal opinion there. I would love to wipe out the WebOS part as well, if nothing than to free up more space. However, I do understand that it is an essential part to the Mods to work and I would not. If the day comes and the Mods are independent, I would wipe it.
As far as warranty is involved, did you not just void the warranty by installing the CM on the touchpad?
Not to say webos is bad, but I just would rather dual booting Ubuntu-native and CM9 alpha 2.

I have the 16GB Touchpad. Currently running Android ICS (the CN version). Prior to that, I had Gingerbread... probably installed it back in October? My point is that I have not booted into webOS at all since October. I don't even remember what webOS looks like anymore.
My Touchpad is used daily and I have been happy 99% of the time. No real reason for me to keep webOS on it. On other other hand, how much storage space can I gain if I "nuke" webOS out of my Touchpad? Is it 2GB, 3GB, or perhaps more?
Thanks!
Firstly, lthe Android team doesn't have any way to do this. It is so till necessary on occasion to have WebOS on here, because the underlying firmware (below the kernel) requires it.
Secondly, even if you did completely remove all the other partitions from WebOS, yo would only gain yourself approximately one gig of space. 1056 MB to be exact. Then you need your /boot which is 30, so you gain 1024. Not a significant amount of space, so why bother, especially since you still need the WebOS in case something goes terribly wrong and out have to reform pat or reinstall anything.

i think the better question should be: "when can we get a stable ICS on the HP Touchpad?"
it will be nice to be able to run just a "stable" ICS on the hp touchpad. i will never wipe out webos for any alpha or beta OS, even when i can.
Well not sure what exactly happened bc to my knowledge gameloft hasnt yet updated it, but however flashing jermaines newest rom i confirmed on the cornerstone and reg aokp roms that order and chaos is indeed running perfect with no mods at all, and throw in motleys new kernel its better than WoW. Roms tested:
Jermaine AOKP-(source of the backup I'm using to restore on other roms)
Jermaine AKOP cornerstone alpha
CM9 nightly (used data backup from TB and game runs good)
yeah, its working !!! and downloading data as well what about gameplay experiences ?

Sounds like good news. I use to play this religiously on my Ipad. I might stay away from this. It was too much of a time consumer..lol.
I really wish they would finally just merge the Android and IOS servers together. If they did, I'd hop back online in a heartbeat. Then I would build my guild back up on IOS whispering island server called "HELLRAISERZ" . We were the official villain guild. Ah, the Memories of pvp wars in Vega before dungeons came around and ruined everything. All people wanted to do was dungeons and no one like to fight anymore..lmfao. Beware of me if I do hop back on this game, I'm a beast..lol. does buying the game for prime still give you 3 free months like on IOS?

Very simple, start by reading my posts....all of them i mention Jermaine and his amazing AOKP Rom, so far i have been testing all the prime roms out there and his is the only one that works flawlessly or at all for that matter....dont know what makes it different but ive tested it many times on his 1.12 and 1.2 Aokp roms and also his Cornerstone alpha even runs the dang game LOL. go figure
Just unlocked my prime for this. Will install AOKP then, although I just had a problem with the wifi. Will report back later!
Edit: With AOKP the app closes after verifying the app license. Not quite sure how to get this to work. My TF201 is German.

Yeah there isn't a tf101 mod for this game that doesn't crash at the character select screen.
And demandarin, it is THAT serious. I loved playing this game in my car during lunch while blasting music. I extended my data plan w/ T-mobile for my phone just to wifi tether to my prime for this game.

Could this have something to do with the different versions of the TF201?

I have a question for all those guys that make a big deal about having their phone upgraded to ICS or JB. I would like to know what is the big difference or a feature that would make my phone Atrix that's stuck on GB so special? I mean, I can run any browser I want except maybe chrome, I can run any email app and watch and listen to music just like on upgraded phone... oh and lets not forget I can still make phone calls. Well firstly, ICS/JB is soo much smoother and much more asthetically pleasing. Many more people prefer ICS/JB and they are entitled to their own opinions.
Also, many people are angry at MotoFail because they promised us ICS and did not deliver. This is what has caused most of the outrage.
Well, yes I'm mad myself that they did not upgrade my $600 phone. BTW I'm using GO Launcher so my phone still looks pretty good and I can't complain about not being smooth. If this is it, it ain't that bad.

Yes, for now most applications support GB, but as percentage of ICS/JB will grow, more and more application developers will dump GB support. There are some bugs in GB that are not fixed and probably won't be ever fixed, so some developers make workaround for them, some don't, so you can stumble upon one of those if you are 'lucky'. Most of new applications are primarily targeting new ICS interface with Action Bar, so they support GB with third party Action Bar library which also has a lot of bugs, some application features could be disabled because it is hard or impossible to implement them in GB. And things will get worse...

I agree, these two things may seem small, but going back from CM10.1 to CM7 makes it feel like my phone is very slow (although I'm sure this is more of a perception than a real difference).
ICS and JB bring UI enhancements. More importantly, there are apps that only work on ICS and above and will never be backported, Which apps are important to users, depends on the user. For instance, Brighthouse and TWC have cable apps that only work on ICS and above. And as time goes by, you'll find more and more newer apps will require ICS and later, especially since ICS itself was released 16 months ago.
But you're right, you can still make phone calls and you can still use 2 year old apps. But if all you care about is using just a phone, you can get one without paying for a smartphone plan for a hell of a lot less money. And while it's unrealistic to have the latest greatest software at all times for the term of the contract, the device at least should not be obsolete before the ink dries on that contract. While the device still mostly works as it did when it was new, the actual resale value has plummeted since the ICS update cancellation announcement, so much so that a decent protective case costs more than what the device is currently worth.
So when it comes to why people make such a fuss about ICS, aside from the cancelled update, and aside from all the marketing hype that went into the device that got people to buy it in the first place, and aside from the fact that ICS and JB are that much better or they wouldn't be considered updates/upgrades, some people like to at least be a little current. After all, why go buy a new computer when people will give you an old one running windows 3.11 for free? Who knows, maybe you can find an old Univac somewhere. While we're at it, why use anything new at all when we can go back to wearing animal hides and banging rocks together to make tools.
I should tell you about the security vulnerabilities as well, but I'm not going to. Sometimes the lesson becomes more valuable when the person learns on their own, even if it's with some rogue dialer hooking you up with one of those $100/minute pay per call lines like back in the days of dialup.

Go Launcher is smooth only after first one or two clicks. It has many advantages like foldering but for the smoothness, i dont think so.
What pisses me off about GB is notification bar pull-down. Sometimes it gets damn so laggy and slow.
Google Now, Multiple GTalk logins, stable push connection, data counter/limiter, better app support, interface that's easier to use and navigate, faster, and many other improvements.
Stable push connection is the one that really made me not want to go back. When I'm on mobile data on GB it would disconnect every 4-5 minutes, and then wait for a few minutes before reconnecting, and then disconnect again after another 4-5 minutes, ad infinitum. I can't tell you how many times I've been frustrated seeing gray status bar icons instead of green ones. And the fact that GB's push mail & market is dependent on the gtalk service doesn't help.
Gray icons? No gtalk messages, no mail, no downloading from the market.
Signed out of gtalk? No mail, no downloading from the market.
It was frustrating...
I don't care about staying in gb, imo the problem is that there are apps made only for 4.x+ and in a close future gb will be definitely dead.

The digitizer doesn't mean much to them. The device is 2 years old and they stopped caring long ago.

I think you guys are exaggerating a little bit. I mean I went to the store and played with phones that run JB and my old Atrix is pretty much just as smooth. I can play Youtube videos in 1080p no problem. And Google Now... do I really need it? I mean I don't live in my phone or on facebook like some of you hard core cell phone users. Balintmaci what did you notice that was so special when browsing on JB OS? Im using Opera browser and it runs pretty fast.

smoothness, many apps, YouTube in 720p for instance. hardware acceleration makes it WAY faster. you can not compare the browsing experience... Google now. that's just what I can think of in a few seconds... i believe that's more than enough.

Less reboots/stability
My stock FY/GB Atrix rebooted randomly a lot. It's the whole reason I looked into roots and ROMs in the first place.
I rooted...unlocked...and put epinters CM10 on my Atrix cuz Motorola said I couldn't!
Haha... good for you mister. Now I'm a total newbe so pardon the stupid question. When you guys flash roms to CMx... ie ICS or JB does this allow you to download and install apps that require that OS from play store?

Same. Got the device in September of 2011 from local AT&T store, in October it started randomly rebooting, even after several factory resets. Between that and the unified messenger spam, I was not impressed.

Yes...and I can flash back to a GB rom anytime I want. I prefer the JB rom without all the bloatware and epinters rom is very good.
