The 4G radion in my Droid DNA recently started to malfunction. It will show full 4G connectivity but remain incapable of sending/receiving any data. 3G is totally fine, for the moments it drops down and before getting back to 4G I have my normal 3G connectivity.
Wifi also works fine.
At first I wondered if there some software related issue, so I put on a custom ROM, which greatly enhanced the phone but did nothing for the 4G radio.
At this point I noticed if I tap the phone around the rear camera while attempting to open a web page that the phone is able to load normally.
This connectivity seems to last for a short duration and then go away again, meanwhile the 4G indicator doesn't change.
Anyone have any thoughts on this? I am almost sure its a hardware issue at this point so I am wondering if opening the phone would allow me any additional insight into why my 4G is unable to connect.

My suggestion would be to try doing what I suggested here: LINK
If that doesn't work, get a new Sim card from Verizon and if need be, put a small piece of electrical tape on the backside of it, to increase the pressure on the sim contacts when inserted.
(probably not highly advised, though I've heard from others where it has helped.
I honestly feel if you do as I suggested in the link I mentioned, you should be fine though. (aside from maybe needing a new sim)
Best of luck! :good:

Well so far I've flashed a stock based ROM 3 times and flashed recovery once, wiped all data twice, with no change.
I tried sticking a thin piece of paper (couldn't find any tape at work) in with the SIM card this morning and its working better than ever
I guess it makes since with the fact that any kind of jaring motion effects the radio lol
Thanks for the help!

I am admittedly a noob when it comes to Android phones. I have had my i777 for a few months now and have successfully bricked it more than once. Having said that, I have found that the answers to my questions have always been on the board somewhere. I am having troubles figuring out where to go with this portion of the issue though. Having tried several different ROMs for my phone, I keep having the same issue. With any ROM, other than stock, I miss phone calls or text messages when my phone is locked and on Wi-Fi at home. If I'm out and about with my phone in my pocket and locked, it works normally. But, if I'm at home working at my desk and the phone is locked, I will not get text messages or phone calls. Notifications from apps like CNN continue, but nothing from the mobile network. I have followed the guide to return to stock and built my own jig that worked to reset my flash counter as I flashed before I read when I got the phone. (Former iPhone user that just assumed it was as easy as a jailbreak, really really dumb on my part)
I am a tech geek. I follow instructions well. I am sure the problem is with my phone and not the ROMs. My question for the forum, is where to begin troubleshooting the issue. I want to be able to use these ROMs.
Some info that may be helpful:
Baseband: I777UCKH7
Kernel: 2.6.35.7
I have tried the following in no particular order:
UCKK6-SHOstockV1.9.2noWipe
Serendipity_8.2
update-unnamed-v2.2.1-full
ICScrewD_2.1
TurkbeyRom-v33
Each has individual issues that I can deal with and learn to fix, but the phone issue I, obviously, cannot get past.

No I have not. Does the wifi connection prevent the cell network from connecting?
cell network shouldn't disconnect at all if it is, swap it out could be bad phone. Also what is your signal level at your desk at home? Low signal normally causes missing of messages.

No, it doesn't.
Do you use any 3rd party apps like tasker?
When did this issue start? Perhaps there is an issue with the tower that serves your home. How strong is your cellular signal at home? I believe text messages (except MMS) are sent over the cellular network. Your being on wifi shouldn't matter (does being at home with wifi off and the phone locked still cause issues?).
I can't imagine other ROMs causing issues, though. If anything, they would mess up your data network only if they had the wrong APN settings for your area (for example, for a while, people using Unnamed didn't have data issues, except for a few like me who lived in certain areas with Cingular towers). Or maybe the stock modem files are better for you than the ones provided by the ROMs?
Maybe you have an old sim card that somehow has issues? You should be able to get a free one from at&t. Do you have another phone that you can test it with?

I keep a minimum of 3 bars and live near the center of a large city. As stated in the op, this is only happening on added ROMs never on stock. I have again reverted to stock (+root), since the op, and confirm that I am getting messages and calls at my desk at home with the phone locked.
****************************Edit for SoCaliTrojan post********************************************
I do not have any additional task managers installed, I've just always used the one built in. As for the SIM card, I am using the one that I got with the i777 at upgrade and get the 4G network when not on wifi, so I think I can rule it out. My wife has a Note that I have been drooling over, guess I will have to "borrow" it for "testing" when she gets home from work.
Also, I notice I am on baseband KH7 with Android version 2.3.4. I see mention of KK6 and 2.3.6 on the forums. I have avoided flashing the baseband, when possible, to keep from possibly bricking the unit. Is it possible that upgrading these could resolve the issue?
That is a very weird problem. Only thing I can suggest is compare the APN settings in root with a custom rom's settings. They should be identical, but check anyway.

Then it isn't connecting to 4G networks.
It's labeled as "4g" but really just multiple 3g connections to give you a faster overall speed. But you might want to just try getting a new sim card at your AT&T store, if that doesn't work, try a different modem (like KK6) the whole list/downloads are in the development section.

I made AT&T upgrade me to a n LTE sim card. Our phone disent have LTE but the newer sim cards supposedly will make your speeds faster when LTE does come to your area due to it pushing HSPA+ faster than enhanced backhaul.
You said you live in the center of a big city maybe being surrounded by a lot of tall buildings could be causing havoc on your cell reception.I know at my work I can send and receive messages and calls everywhere except our breakroom but everyone else's phone works fine in the breakroom.

My DNA just has the Voice service after connecting to WiFi over night. The first thing I need to do after leaving home is flight mode on and off to get the phone back on the carrier's network data. It is annoying, Am I the only one here?

Have you tried in gsm only mode? I have same problem and preparing SIM card issue doesn't come up in 2g mode. I was reading this kind of issue is produced most likely by a faulty 3g antenna.

I experience this problem frequently too. Not sure if there really is a fix for it. Toggling between airplane mode works for some people, reseating the SIM card, gently erasing the back of the sim card, applying 2 layers of tape to the sim card tray to keep the card seated appropriately, exchanging for a new SIM, putting phone into airplane phone and removing sim than replacing sim card, remove sim card than boot into recovery and clear cache and dalvik, etc.. yes I've tried most of these but to no avail. The OTA update may have helped a little I am not sure. Most believe it is a hardware issue that really can't be permanently fixed. If anything else is found let us know. Such an annoying problem that totally ruins this amazing phone.
There's different issues being discussed here. It sounds like you're having the issue where you need to toggle airplane or network sometimes when switching between networks or from WiFi to mobile data.
It's not device specific, there's some decent articles on it and in the early days we thought it was a Verizon issue. But it's actually a Sprint problem too I learned on accident when I was trolling their forums.
When the network is activated, on a device with a SIM card on Verizons network, the preparing SIM notification is actually describing a process very similar to *228 back in the olden days before LTE that was done when first activating a device on the CDMA network. The LTE network is different in that everytime it connects to the network is does that SIM activation process.
I know on my networks here, there's a changeover in one place it happens about 50 percent of the time.
If that's what is happening to you and toggling airplane fixes it, I think it's an LTE/network symptom and not due to a faulty device.
However I have a device I'm about to warranty with a hardware failure I'm thinking. It gets data great but absolutely no voice ever, never had an incoming call or anything. Or made an outgoing call in the month I've had it. It doesn't bother me I didn't buy this thing to talk on, but I'm donating the device so I'm going to have it fixed.
Anyway, from all the OP has posted so far, I'm not feeling like it's a hardware or device issue, however as more info develops that opinion may evolve.

U r the man Charlie. I am having an identical issue as op. And based on occurrences relevant to location it seems that this is only an issue when under 4g service-atleast for me-. Toggling airplane mode reactivates SIM as u said and restores full functionality. However, I have noticed the time needed to pass for said issue to reoccur is significantly shorter unless a full restart is preformed. If fastboot is enabled the issue persists. My question is this; if this is a network issue -which I'm sure it is at least in part- what software wise -if anything- could be going on a full restart fixes?
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
I'm a gsm user and I'm having the issue in a non 4g lte network. I have preparing SIM card every couple of minutes. If I toggle to gsm only mode everything is perfect, not even a single issue. Looking to the logcat, when the error comes up, it shows a message about ICCID number doesn't match stored one and then invalid radio technology. Is this software or hardware? I'm really confused. I've already tried everything from software side, kernels, radios, roms, RUU to stock.

I had this HTC Amaze for over a year on T-mobile and worked great.
I have dropped it few times before and never any issue.
Last week, it just slid down from my knee to carpet and then it lost network.
All signal bars are grayed out and there is an x next to it.
Sim card or no sim card, it's still x on the bar.
No networks found when checked.
Also tried airplane mode on/off.
Tried changing GSM and GSM/CDMA auto etc...
Reset to factory.
Still same thing. Now I have a small tablet instead of a phone.
I used SIM in different phone and works fine.
I opened the back but everything looks good. Nothing loose or broken.
Is it done now or any hope left?
Thanks
i think you should probably have it repaired by those guys at the service center or anyone you know who does this kind of work
otherwise.....i don't think you can do anything about it.....and better try to keep your tablet safe ,or you'll even damage that!!!!
Hello,
I got an LG G3 from Verizon back in October and need help resolving some issues I've come across.
ISSUE 1:
When using google maps, it sometimes has trouble locating my position. A couple times it thought I was halfway across the world, in another country!? I've turned the GPS signal on and off multiple times but it didn't resolve the problem
ISSUE 2:
Related to the first issue, the built-in navigation doesn't work at all. My phone just says searching for GPS signal. Once in a while, it will find my location and when I think it's finally working, it fails to update my location/give directions while i'm driving. I've actually pulled over on the highway a few times to try and fix it without any luck. I'd cancel the navigation, reopen the maps app and try to find my position. The maps app would eventually update and show me positioned on some side road way off the highway. I rely on my phones GPS/Navigation a lot and haven't had one successful attempt using it. I need this fixed asap.
ISSUE 3:
My phone looses its data connection quite frequently. The internet will completely stop working even though my phone shows I have multiple 3G/4G bars. It's very annoying, especially when trying to listen to pandora while i'm driving. Pandora cuts out and stutters frequently.
I have no idea if anyone else has had these problems or if my phones defective? The reason I got a new phone was because the data connection on my Droid DNA suddenly stopped working and the phone overheated. Other than that I never had any problems with gps/navigation on my DNA.
The strange part is the DNA suddenly started loosing it's data connection and the LG G3 has been doing the same thing since day 1. I was given a new sim card when I got the G3 so I know it's not a related sim card issue. Could there be an issue with my actual Verizon account? Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm hesitant to go to Verizon because their notorious for factory resetting phones when troubleshooting problems.
I'm having the same issue with GPS navigation and is driving me nuts

I thought I was the only one. I scoured the internet looking for a solution but couldn't find one. Over the wknd I went to Verizon because I couldn't take it anymore. The first employee I talked to told me that my brand new phone was defective and that they would have to mail me a refurb one. Luckily, for me, I wasn't an account manager so the guy couldn't initiate the process of sending me another phone so I left. The next day I set myself up as an account manager and went back to Verizon. This time I spoke with a different employee who, within 2 seconds, told me my new sim card was bad. I didn't believe him. I thought it couldn't be that simple of a fix. It took about 20mins for my phone to fully recognize the new sim card but it did solve all my problems. My battery life has also improved too because my phones not constantly search for signal.
have the same gps issue
I have the same gps issue, tried to compare it with another phone with "gps test" application and lg g3 was the worst between iphone 5s, lg g2 pro, and samsung galaxy grand. Does anyone know whether it was hardware or software issue ?
A new sim card solved my issue. GPS worked flawlessly afterwards.
Same issue I had with the LG G2. The GPS on that device was horrible and it looks as if the G3 suffers from the same short coming. And from everything that I learned from the Verizon G2, it was hardware and not software related. I haven't opened this phone up yet but I know with the G2, it had something to do with the gold pins not making a good connection to the back plate pins.
Hello all,
I am having an intermittent but a strange signal problem with my wife's OnePlus X and I suspect that this is some sort of software issue with the modem firmware and not a hardware fault.
Basically if you reboot the phone, 9 times out of 10 there will be absolutely no signal whatsoever on the 3 UK network, the phone will just state emergency calls only. This happens on both 3G and 4G, but we usually have 4G turned off as there are not many areas within our region that support 4G yet. If you search Available Networks 3 doesn't show up.
Usually leaving the phone for hours the signal will come back, but sometimes it can be fixed by going into the Test Menu by putting *#*#4636#*#* into the dialer and going to Phone Information -> Toggling the Radio off and On a few times, but this doesn’t work every time. My phone is also on the Three network, so I have tried putting both SIMS's in the OnePlus X at the same time and the same issue occurs in both SIM Slots. If I put a Vodafone SIM in as well as the Three SIM, the Vodafone SIM works absolutely fine, regardless of the SIM slot it goes in, but it maintains a signal each time. The problem isn’t signal in the area as we have full signal in our house. If I put my wife's SIM into my LG G4 it works absolutely fine 100% of the time.
Three will not help us as the phone isn’t supplied by them, this is getting to the point now where this phone is becoming unreliable to use because if you have to reboot, chances are you won't have any signal for hours on end.
This happens on OOS and CM13 and has done for months.
Has anyone come across this issue before?
Just wondered if anyone else has experienced this?

My wife ended up getting rid of the phone a few months ago, she couldnt put up with it any longer as it was just the same. I don't think it was a hardware fault with the phone as it worked fine on any other network but Three. The phone supported all the frequencies that Three offers, so I have no idea why it didnt work right but certainly something wasn't right.

When I had recently visited the UK, I had trouble connecting to the Three as well(through my home SIM as International Roaming). It didn't work so I ended up buying an O2 SIM that worked just fine.
I fixed it by putting some scotch tape over the back of the sim card, My OPX is almost 2 years old and the sim card is not in good contact with the phone inside I think.
