hello guys.. okay I will make this quick to the point...
before we begin, I'm a poweruser with hundreds of apps installed and for honest I'm using all of them.. included the Xposed Modules.
After time to time I recognized this JB based ROM ARTMOD (which is still based on Official Moto ROM) kinda not reliable anymore, boot time is insanely more than 5 minutes even I removed some useless from startup entry.
Rarely to soft reboot and I have to execute Greenify very often to free up some RAM when I wanna use my app or the RAZR getting slow.
One problem I found with my RAZR is the SystemUI process kinda eat up my RAM like crazy (the highest is about 290MB), because of this I wanna look some alternative custom ROM in priority to Kit Kat ROM. As I know Kit Kat ROM is light on RAM consumption so I can load bunch of apps I need in RAZR's 1 GB RAM.
Also since ICS, RAZR is getting short freezed after installing/updating apps from APK files or from Google Play Store, and still occured until now in my ARTMOD ROM. Anyhow what caused..?
recently for the last week I've been crazy hunting Kit Kat custom ROM for my RAZR MAXX, and my choosen one is Liquid Smooth, most of Xposed Modules I used already integrated in Liquid Smooth.
I've been tested this Liquid Smooth for about 5 days with regular basis in BMM slot 2, but I haven't test it for heavy usage with all of my apps installed. So I'm still worried if I restore all of the apps and data with Nandroid Manager the ROM won't hold. Because I've been tested with MIUI (ICS based) last year and end up with launcher crashed and endless loop, still didn't know what will happen with Liquid Smooth.
Fpr the last resort about my problem maybe I will planning to buy a new phone, because is all about hardware resource which is RAZR getting it's limit, my target is the Xperia Z2 which is just announced in MWC but in my country still about 2-3 months for it's availability.
So for the time being, I just wanna my RAZR is getting hold up before Xperia Z2 arrived. Any advice guys..? Feel free to ask anything...
Thanks before and sorry if my English is bad.

Already but I haven't tested in regular basis, in personal I prefer Liquid Smooth for now...
Any hot features for daliy basis..? I haven't look around inside and only tested it 1 time less than 10 minutes.
And Mokee ROM slot in BMM already erased cause there's something I dislike inside it (and horribly I totally forget it)
Try a combo of Slimkat + JBX kernel. The rom itself goes pretty light on memory and cpu load and the custom kernel has some pretty neat features if you need some extra power (eg. overclocking, tuning memory management etc.).

Any hot features for daily basis...? I kinda interest for bunch of built-in features in Liquid Smooth taken from Xposed Modules.
For flashing custom kernel, I kinda very new here and honestly never done it. Is it easy as flashing zip file..?

Well there's quite a lot of bundled tweaks and options which you can fiddle with. But first of all - it's really stable and smooth.Oh, and flashing a custom kexec kernel (and all kit kat roms use it) is as easy as flashing a rom or gapps - just a zip file in BMM.

Already tried Slimkat but the built-in features is not much as Liquid Smooth.. And I didn't know if if I'm wrong... Liquid Smooth is better than SlimKat in responsive regular UI navigation... Haven't tested it for long enought, maybe I try again later...
A decent build is more than enought for daily basis, as I know every build published we need re-flash the ROM or if lucky there's ROM updater built-in trought OTA..
Well if you prefer LiquidSmooth, you can try JBX kernel with it.

Already tried and hey... kinda better in my opinion... still going around with Liquid Smooth as the candidate for my RAZR...
Even I already know the HDMI will never work (damn you Motorola) after flashed Kit Kat but I prefer the significant performance improvement after this.. So guys, is there any advice before I begin to replace my JB..?
---------
This is may the future steps I will take if 100% going to Liquid Smooth (tell me if I missing something)
- I flash and factory reset (do I need factory reset or just dirty flash..?) with GApps (any modular version is okay I guess)
- If I take factory reset then install Nandroid Manager Pro to restore Android ID for license and other needs (like LINE Messenger restoration)
- Restore ALL of my application from nandroid backup file, for the details I have 290 apps and once again I'm using all of them until now, and this step make me worried most because kinda afraid after restoration or reboot the ROM won't hold all of my apps. Still I don't know what will happens after hundreds of apps restored. I will take my chance.
- Next step is double-check all of my apps if they working fine in Kit Kat ROM, still dunno what will happen here, hundreds of apps and not all of them Kit Kat ready.
- If all of the apps working fine then I will going for the first day of daily basis with Kit Kat ROM. Hopefully everything will hold until my new phone available.
------------
About the hundreds of apps in my RAZR, if you guys wanna ask what I'm doing with all of them... well I'm a professional user but not a professional developer.. just a user hahaha.. I will download an application which is has a great or killer function or alternative app which is better than the official app. For example, Cloudii which is all-in-one cloud storage management but still I install the DropBox, Drive and OneDrive independently for 2nd chance in case Cloudii got some problem. Fast for Facebook for quick viewing but Facebook official app for Code Generator when I login in my notebook. Well, that's some of it...
That's why I always do a total backup for my apps so I can restore it with the data included and continue using it without re-login or register again. For example, LINE Messenger, after we migrate to another device the chat history will be deleted in old device but NOT migrated to new device and for me truly dislike it. I never delete any message history even my SMS messages is about 19,800 records saved since I'm using Galaxy Gio as my first Android phone 3 years ago.
Even now I worried when I got Xperia Z2 how can I restore all of my apps if root (safe root) not available. Time will talk I guess hahahaa..
Well, one problem you might have with your apps is that you're migrating between Android versions. Theoretically they're all compatible but results may vary For example I restore apps only in roms of the same Android version - prior to installing KitKat I had some apps backed up from 4.2.2 which I was on before, but preferred to do a clean install. They usually run smoother and better this way.
I do this as well. Keep backups for each ROM.

Well I will do that way but maybe gonna use some filter to some apps, for LINE Messenger which is I need the chat history and the other apps...
For standalone apps or cloud based apps like Dropbox or Facebook I take clean restore, maybe safe this way for some time..
Still wondering around inside Liquid Smooth today... still...... 80% hahahaha...

I always backup each day after install/update apps for safety with my records and data inside each apps..
Okey... this may the answer for all of this big woops.. hahaha..
at 7.00 PM (my local time), already brave enought to flash Liquid Smooth in my RAZR MAXX, Factory Reset and data wipe...
And then do the restoration with Nandroid Manager, okey this is the deal breaker... after 5 hours of restoration I've encountered 10 loops with some apps while in restoration process.. force restart each loops and so on... After 11 loops.. I'm done... stop the restoration and back to the Jelly Bean ARTMOD.. only in 10 minutes done with BMM restoration, continue work with ARTMOD..
FYI, from 290 apps only 40 has been restored in that 5 hours... okay that is insane..!!!
Kit Kat Upgrade Plan Aborted... hahaha..
I guess, I have to hold down until Xperia Z2 arrive in my country...
Thanks guys for the advice and others.. sorry to dissapoint.. not upgrading to Kit Kat..
And sorry if my English is bad.. Thanks again..
--------------------
Maybe some of you will think why I didn't wait for it even take a long time or something else..
Well, as you know from my posts before this, I'm a professional user and yes shop many apps included the paid apps. My workplace as tutor in campus need a smartphone which is can handle anything without bug. In my opinion, I loved to use a custom ROM and really loved the customization, especially Recent UI in Liquid Smooth just like in the Windows Phone (I'm not talking that crap fruitphone).
5 hours in migration progress already make me worried what I must to do next if some of apps will not running nicely in Kit Kat. So I cancel all of the plans and back to ARTMOD, restored from BMM.
But despite loved the custom ROM, I really want the realibility in everyday usage basis. Because I'm not a person which is always monitoring the development progress in XDA forum. Yes I loved customization but until now Xposed Framework already make me satisified in every corners even deep customization may not available.
So for now, I will stick with the ARTMOD which is based in Official Moto JB (bloatwareless Moto JB). Performance is so-so but acceptable and realibility will hold up.

please, somebody please help me get a useable phone again. I'm not sure if it's how I'm flashing, the roms I'm using, or if it's just what I have to deal with. things have sucked ever since the first jb Rom I've tried.
I've had the awful non-responsive home button issue across all roms. constant random reboots, and fcs constantly. messaging, email, system ui.. everything. battery barely gets me through work. a phone should not work like this, and this stuff didn't used to happen with ics.
I'm using twrp2 and I've tried many cm10 releases, PA, liquid smooth. some work well for a few hours, none of them have been good.
please help if you can.

Sent from one bad ass, highly modified, Samsung Galaxy Note running Novena A3 using the BEST in mobile apps, XDA-Developers!
I've run several very good, stable ROMs. ICS: BlackStarVII, VIII, IX and X.
JB: Eclipse 2.0 and currently running CM10 Stable.
All of these run flawlessly for me. I flashed all with CMW.
There are plenty of stable roms out there. BlackStarX Is very stable. It is stock with the ability to tweak and customize. you would need to give more details of how your installing
swyped on my huge phone
For the home button issue, if you flash one of the "alternate" kernel's, it fix's the home button issue (or at least, it did for me).
As for a rom, I use FJ's JethroBubba w/o issue, have had 200hrs~ uptime on my phone and would have had longer if I wasnt such a flash-o-hollic and flashed the updates for it nearly the next day...
Its not for everyone, but its solid as a rock for me.

I am so ****ing fed up with this phone. please someone help me out... after loving it for months I'm so close to selling it. just problem after problem on any Rom I try. right now I can't even use my phone to make calls. it rings on the other end but there is silence on my end. I tried clearing phone data in apps, tried fixing permissions, rebooting several times. I've had this issue on each Rom on and off. right now on cm10.. forget the exact nightly but I think the one after stable.
I just don't understand. it has to be something I'm doing or not doing since everyone else is having luck getting reliability. could using cwm instead of twrp somehow make for a more reliable flash? what else could I possibly try? maybe someone could list exact steps of how they're flashing, and what they're using to do so. I would be so grateful.

are you flashing them correctly?
Wipe data/cache/dalvik
using twrp2.. I factory reset, wipe data/cash, and dalvik. flash Rom. flash gapps. fix permissions. boot. it seems sometimes the Rom auto restores my apps. if not I restore apps with tibu.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app
Your not restoring the data for apps on tibu are up? And jellybean for the note is a wip we do not have an official kernel source so its gonna be wonky sometimes. Some ROMs are better than others but they all fail every now and then jellybean ones anyways. Have u tried novena? Its a very nice and fast ICS ROM.
Family alliance
maybe I'll try going back to ics. disappointing since jb had some nice features. I've tried restoring just apps and apps plus data. but I've also flashed roms where I didn't need tibu and still same issues. but so many people are claiming reliability on these jb roms. not sure if mine is different or they just have lower expectations

Deep Breath....then pause, and think about this for a minute...
It is "VERY" likely that your problems are user related...(not to sound mean or insulting, because I do "NOT" intend to be..) But...
Roms coming to us are for the most part...clean. A factory build with mild tweaks, and certainly stable for every day use.
The problems come when users dont "clean" the device properly on a fresh flash, or they restore bits of previous rom data from non-compatible builds.
Now I make screw up's too, after nearly 10 years of android hacking. I'll forget a wipe function, or restore an app with TIBU that should "NOT" get put back without a clean app install.
Long story short, the roms here are solid in the ICS realm, and are very good in the JB side too....
I suggest Blackstar as a top pick, also the UCLF6 ICS build #5 from flappjaxxx....
Both are rock solid, and if you exhibit any problems beyond the normal android hickups, then it is likely a user/device issue, and not the rom itself....g
To follow Sarge, try a clean install of all apps from the market. Its a pain to reenter data, etc. but it sounds like you're already in pain.
Its really not that difficult. I will agree that some roms are more stable than others. Most of the JB roms do have some random issues. Here is the thing though. When you start flashing custom roms, you need to accept that you might encounter minor issues. If you are not willing to live with those issues or find work arounds, then you need to flash back to stock and be happy.
Keep in mind that devs have source code to work with ICS roms. Since Samsung hasn't dropped JellyBean source for this device, the current builds are all based on the google opensource code, without many of the device specific drivers.
Others have mentioned and I agree 100%, reinstall all of your user apps out of the play store. I don't trust any of the app backups from TiBU or any other tool. I also do a complete wipe and format everything between roms. You have to have some level of patience to dabble in the custom rom world, and it sounds like you might be missing that. See what you got after an initial install, don't overclock or change any performance settings...Install just the basic apps, from the play store and see how things work for a day or so. If things seem smooth, then add some more apps. Many people try and do too much at one time, which make isolating the problem nearly impossible.
ok, right now I'm on novena... I really hate ics after using jb, but it appears to be quite good so far at least. been on it for a few days and not really any issues. this time I also installed using cwm instead of twrp. apps were restored automatically with play store. sometimes that doesn't happen.. is there any way to install through play store if it doesn't do it automatically?

Hi everybody,
I have been trying roms for months. I donate some of them, I reported bugs, I really gave lotst of times for this work. I just wanted to have a rom that newer Android... I am really tired of trying... I realize that; this is wasting time. I could not find a rom that works perfect or without issue. People say, "Stable/great/perfect rom, you should try" but when we try, it have lots of problems.
Finally, Am I going to have a newer really stable Android, without problem or lag?
Addition:
Finally
I found this rom
Mokee http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2596176
It is just what was i looking for...
Addition 2:
After 1 week, Mokee get laggy specially while incoming call. Phone ringing but caller screen came 4-5 seconds later.
Changed rom to SlimKat Beta 2.3
I have been using SlimKat more than 3 weeks.
Just one problem: Can not install some apps like xda app (error about sd card)
No more problem.
I suggest SlimKat.
no proper drivers for custom kexec kernel means... never ... sad but true ... get nexus device as i will... shame for moto and their bootloader lock such good device wasted...
Listen you maybe just wasting time but u also need to see that a majority of the users are having a good stable for most things. Sometime you have issues that could be that you have you caused it. Just my opinion my xt912 is running fine on cm11

I had that too but to be fair I must say that my Stock ROM wasn't 100% stable either.
The good thing about this is: it's all voluntarily, so everybody can choose the personal best solution

I mean, roms are good, maybe working faster thank stock, but device freezing, sd mount problem, hdmi, camera problems, apps crashing, gps problems, visual problems, and other problems we have lot.
For example, I tried

Artmod
Gummy
Eclipse
Miui
Some unoffical roms,
And i can say that, i tried to flash all of them bmm and also safestrap times and times. But all of them have problem that does not available to use daily.
If you ask that; what hell are you looking for?

To sum it up, there is an app for everything (almost) the only work-a-round I have not been able to accomplish or find here would be HDMI as I have to switch back to stock if I would like to use my phone with my TV and or computer but I am definitely not complaining this is for sure. I have been running stock on my Razr Maxx (XT912) for over a year but it got bloated and VERY slow so I wanted to ROM this phone finally (I had messed around with my prior Droid X phone alot ).
Unfortunately ROMs always failed when I tried them. Unable to open zip in safestrap (updated to 3.65). I couldn't find a good answer to this problem so factory reset and tried again....no go...still failing. Verified the downloads. They are good. Rage/ Slim ROMs, CM 10 and 11...nothing works. I finally try to reflash my phone with the utility, but I used the wrong/ old one...phone no longer boots....uh oh!
Found the proper utility (updated batarang one) and ran it and I am able to boot again....but I'm still stock.
Reinstall Safestrap 3.65 and retry ROMing this thing. CM 11 (12-27) takes. Flash gapps and kernal. All is well. Double wiped cache/ dalvic between each step.
Been 24 hours now and I have had a couple crashes. Had to reinstall, then uninstall and reinstall dolphin browser to get it to work.
Just tried a pic and it worked fine...Gallery from phone crashed but opened fine separately.
The only problem I have with it so far is that PDAnet does not work. So I'll have to swap over to stock for net access that way.
I still have to learn the in and outs of the experience (?) launcher, but it is working pretty well for something that is still experimental. This is my one and only phone...my daily driver ... so I can't do with a lot of bugs. But of course my expectations are tempered by the fact I know I am not using a fully released ROM. I can say that my phone is running better than before and I get to have the fun of learning the new ways to use the phone with the improvements/ changes of the latest android.
I have read quite a few posts of people being upset that the ROMS aren't perfect. Read the posts about your particular ROM. Be sure you can deal with the bugs they list (usually on the first page/ post) and if not, don't use it. Also do a clean install the first time. Also follow the directions and read before you leap.

I have to say, MIUI has been the most consistent in performance. Only problem is that I've got an XT912 and I had no data while I used it. I only used it for two weeks, but during those two weeks it performed beautifully.
I am having the same issues as the OP. After about a month of use the ROM starts freezing and rebooting from time to time and overall feeling VERY sluggish. A fresh install always fixes this. I'm currently running CM10 and it as worked well for the longest by far, but is now awful. Stock is also subpar after a month of use.

are these newer android phones giving more reasons to stay stock? I have found with the G2 that I have no want (or need) right now to root/ROM this phone. Usually when I get a new phone the first thing I do is root it, clear all that carrier crap out, or simply flash CM for that stock android experience; I just have not found that need with the G2.
So, what is the point of this thread?
I want to know everyone's thoughts about this. Are you rooted...are you stock....and why you are or are not?
If you are rooted, I would also like to know what ROM/Kernel/etc you are running.
Thanks!
I am rooted but on stock everything else.
I mainly rooted for Titanium Backup and other root enabled apps like AdBlock and Greenify. Beyond that, stock is sufficient for me.
Stock unrooted. Since greenify is avaliable without root I kinda found no real reason to root. The only thing I really want is the dual window option from LG g flex. Maybe also to try out dorimanx kernel for undervolting and messing around a bit.

The main reason I usually root/rom is for speed and battery life....as we all know the G2 doesnt lack anything in either. I use the greenify beta as well and have noticed a huge difference in my battery life. The only thing tempting me to root is Titanium Backup but I have been fighting it because I'm so damn happy with the phone as it sits.

Link for adblock? Or at least point me in right direction
Root + Flex rom + Custom kernel
Why?
I like stock rom (UI and feature) but flex rom is better (Black UI + more feature)
I'm rooted and stock. Stock rocks. I'm also running g2 xposed. With this you have all the customizations on aosp but on stock Rom

if there was a Flex rom for the Sprint variant, I would probably reconsider. Althoughhhh I am running the LG Flex theme thru LG's theme manager which gives me a somewhat similar look to the Flex.
I like the stock ROM with xposed, but now I'm on AOSP, because micro stuttering on stock started to bug me, even if it was barely noticeable.
thoughts....
Flashing is so played out for me. A new feature gets added and something else breaks and needs to be fixed...repeat.
.....At this point just root and do your own thing(s).
But I have not did anything to this phone, it works just fine.
I'm stuck but rooted with a few xposed modules, adblock and of course the camera mod. Now it's perfect! Never been this happy with a device. I played with AOSP kk and that was fun for awhile. I came from a gnex previously, which I loved despite the shortcomings.

I have 3x VS980s. Two are happy with being 100% stock.
I rooted mine from day1, but stayed with stock-based ROM for a month as I was happy with stockLG (I can satisfy my flashing urges with
my N7) ... Then I decided to explore the latest/greatest of Android on this phone... I would never go back to stock and don't even care when/if LG
would release a stock 4.4.x (OK, maybe we need the new OEM kernel source).
ROM+gapps are normally ~200MB instead of a huge download.
I get to try so many features out .. I can switch to other ROM (or even my Stock) Backups in a few minutes, if my mood changes.
Not that I fully need those features ... just the feeling of doing things freely.
I'm currently staying with Mahdi ... lean, fast, so-many-features, no issues (I had some freezes/reboots on early releases, still no biggies then).
DirtyUnicorns is great too, but may need some little time to smooth out the little bugs
Played around like 3 days with roms, i turned into a flashaholic, flex, non flex, tried so many roms and at the end of this, im on stock rooted now. i bought G2 Xposed (0,70 € - definitely worth!) and now it looks cool, its fast, stable, what else do i need? Darker UI? For what exactly? I actually using apps and not the starving at the settings and think "wow cool, its dark". no need, really. im pretty happy currently with full stock rooted. the next days i will customize my homescreen a bit and then its ready. just wait for 4.4
YOLO
Stock, rooted, debloated, xposed to get rid of GPS and dual wifi/lte notifications.
I'm coming from the HTC Rezound. I usually go for CM, but am very impressed with the LG interface. I have been tempted to try a flex Rom, but am happy having a phone that everything works, and has amazing battery life.

After flashing my Galaxy Nexus several times a week, and sometimes a few times in a day, for two years, I fully expected that I'd be doing the same with the G2. But I've been very pleasantly surprised at the speed, smoothness, features and battery life with stock. Stock has also been incredibly stable for me, No FC's, no lockups.
The stocks apps are much better than I expected -- the functionality has been excellent. I'm keeping an eye on the various sub-forums here for the G2, and may wind up flashing something new, but so far, I don't see anything more appealing than stock, and I'm not ready to give up the stock features. I may wind up with Flex, but I'm also guessing that there will be an update for the G2 sometime in the next 2 or 3 months, and my guess is that it may have some of the extra feature's we're seeing today in the Flex ROM. For now - I'm happy to remain stock, experiment with themes for the stock launcher and simply enjoy this fantastic phone. Still feels weird, as this is the first phone I've had where I'm really happy with stock.
^^Same exact situation for me,I'm loving the g2,just need to get rid of some of the bloat. But something deep inside really wants to start flashing away, but it's just too good as is, I stopped after root and recovery.

I rooted first to get rid of all the status bar icons. Overkill lol I don't need to know NFC or WiFi is on. And with xposed tweaks, its all I need. I have zero interested in an asop ROM. Using flex and love it

I have been jumping between a few ROMs for a period of time now and finally decided to stick with one which I think is stable, fast and gives the best battery life by far. I admit I haven't tried all of the ROMs out there, also people have different set ups and use their phone differently. So please take what I say as a recommendation only, and I mainly wish to share some of my experience as I know how frustrating it can be to choose a ROM out of so many choices. At the end I also want to share the MODs I have been using and how I have personalized my device, hopefully will help someone out there.
Note: I didn't use the same MOD for all ROMs! See more explanation below.
ROM
Just to make it clear, I wipe all before flashing a new ROM. I don't use any kind of backup software, yes that is right I don't, call me insane But the result of poor battery life or restart/FC should not be caused by these factors. I also install about the same app back (give a take a couple which I don't use often) after a flash. I also use the same set up for all my ROMs e.g. Auto brightness, screen on time and etc.
STOCK
I have been on stock LG G2 ROM for about 5 months I think, there are some nice features and I have to say it is probably the most stable ROM out there.
But for me, I experienced a bit of lag here and there.
I think many out there will agree with me, when I say the ROM doesn't have the best UI design. I would recommend installing Xposed Installer (xda) and G2 Xposed (play store) and make some modifications yourself.
The battery is ok, last a day for me and ends up with 30% on a good day (often below 15%).
The biggest feature for me is the knock code to unlock device, I do miss it.
I didn't compare but the Camera app is better than Google Camera (opinion, didn't test).
CloudyG3 v1.3
Used this ROM for about a month, stable enough for daily driver.
Some lags when using the phone in general. Animation slow down is the main reason I decided to go with another ROM.
UI looks much nicer than G2 since it is based on G3.
Can use G3 TweaksBox to tweak UI like you can with G2 Xposed, but most features will require you to pay. Which I did, but don't think it is worth the money. Most changes require you to reboot to see effect and it is buggy.
Again knock code is a plus, better than stock ROM I think.
Slightly better battery than Stock but not much better, I would say about the same. Been using the same MODs since.
Camera is also pretty good, on par with STOCK (opinion, didn't test).
Mahdi-ROM 09/20
This is a very popular recommendation, rated the most stable ROM. But it is the opposite for me, phone would restart and FC.
Some bugs listed on ROM page. This doesn't affect me, but may affect some of you.
Very similar to CM11, a lot of options to tweak, too much in my opinion.
Battery life about same as stock, again the ROM wasn't stable enough for me so can't possibly have amazing battery life. Same MODs as I have now.
No knock code.
ParanoidAndroid 06/28
This is my current ROM, glad I decided to try it.
Very stable, haven't had a single FC or restart yet and I have been on it for weeks.
This is the fastest ROM, I don't notice any animation slow down at all. Ok a few times with the keyboard I am using but pretty sure it is the keyboard app.
Amazing battery life. e.g. 10 hours since unplugged, 2 hour screen on, 76% left.
Has double tab to wake, but no Knock code
Good amount of built-in customization
MODs + app suggestions
Twilight app (or something similar), for less harsh light on the eye when reading at night.
Google Now Launcher + Xposed GEL Settings, I like the Google Now being included in the launcher itself.
LiOn Tamer (AKA Unbounded) to stop wake-locks, just install and then done no set up require.
Silence app, which turns phone silent for those who work at from 9am - 5pm.
Calendar + Calendar Mute app which turn phone silent for those who are at University with odd lecture times.

Unfortunately I haven't tried all the ROMs, so can't give you any suggestion on them.
As for custom kernels and ART, I have been using whatever comes with the ROMs. The result on PA is so good (7.5 hours screen on time with 22% battery left), I never found myself in the situation of needing to tweak anything. Kernel is generally my last choice, because it is a lot of trial and error. The last I tried ART was when it was still in beta, I should really give it a go now it is more stable.
Can you provide a link to the 26/8 PA rom? Can't seem to find it in the PA thread cos there are only other dated roms. Sorry for being a noob cos I've never flashed aosp on my g2. Or which release did you use or would recommend?
Dont you miss the Qslide apps on stock roms? or the Qremote? (I use it all the time)
and thanks for sharing the expirience... I myself decided only to root the phone in the case that it won't be getting Android 5.0

I tried Qslide on stock, then never used it again. For me spliting the screen in half means i can't see much of anything. I think it might be useful when you get used to it, but I never really got used to it.

Nice write up! I used Mahdi, PA and CloudyG3 and agree with your comments. I'm currently running cloudyg3 and would like to add a few notes to those who are interested. Disabling all the animations does speed things up for me and the dev made the G3 Tweakbox features all free. PA is my second favorite ROM, super smooth and stable. If camera was better on PA, it would be my daily driver.

I'm really interested in trying the G3 rom. I've been using stock on this phone since I got it and I really love the built in features and stability. I've come from a long line of Nexus ownership and have a Nexus 7 2013 for AOSP support + latest updates.
I was really worried about the stability of the G3 port but feel a little more confident reading your review compared to other roms. Paranoid Android was always fun too, I just never tried it on my G2.

Yeah G3 Rom are very stable only some hiccups when you have too many apps open, apart from that everything is pretty good. Camera is normally the main selling point for most
Also I think going from stock -> G3 ROMs -> AOSP is a pretty good way going about it.

Hello,
After a year or so after buying a SGS III, I started experiencing slowdowns. Six months later I installed Android 4.3 as it was available with OTA. I run official ROM, nothing fancy. Now, I experience serious performance slowdowns during new screens loading, switching applications, any action in fact can be slow; when I listen to music (standard player) sometimes I get 10 cuts in a song.
I have like 60 apps installed. My average RAM load is 750 MB / 831 MB.
I have never reset to Factory defaults. I just tried deleting all my text msgs to improve loading, it dit not change anything.
I imagine the current services load is too heavy for a pretty old phone. Is this the reason for huge performance slowdowns (sometimes 5 secs delays)?
I also fear the development of the Samsung layer is pretty bad. When you take into account, the poor dev capabilities Samsung demonstrated with Kies, or with PC interface (I struggle uploading files to the device, it gets deconnected all the time). I think Samsung is good at electronics, but bad at software; this would be a personal "feeling". I aslo experienced huge performance drops with SGS1.
What do you think of the reasons for performance issues with SGSIII ?
You are on unmodified stock, that is the reason.

No troll please, it s too easy
one more thing
There is one more think I wanted to add: I wonder if Samsung does not use "programmed obsolescence" (don't know if it is the correct term)...
No, I wasn't trolling. Unmodified stock has over sixty processes and services running all the time while most users only need four or five.
Over time and use the system will slow even further as firmware updates and third party apps interfere.
The phone hardware is well up to running 4.3, just not sixty things at once.
Your first step is to backup your personal data then factory reset and format the internal storage. This will improve things immediately but until you switch to a custom firmware, even one with a stock base, you will not solve the problem.
Even on stock firmware you can disable 80% of the junk Samsung installed.
Very honest opinion.. Just flash your phone with Cyanogen or another custom ROM.. This should be the best bet for you!
You should get KitKat 4.4.4 as of now.

Thanks for your explanations, they are helpful.
I experienced huge performance drops one year or so after installing Darky ROM on my SGS1; I had to switch back to stock ROM. That's why I'm not eager to try the "custom ROM experience" again; it takes too much time.
I still have two questions to you, you seem to know well this Android subject:
1. Does the factory reset changes the ROM installed, or just wipes the user data?
2. How do I disable some stock services? Is there a good app? (I could not find anything useful by forum search)
AOSP Custom rom is for the enthusiast only, as they all come with drawbacks like shorter battery life or hardware issues. Custom rom based on stock is suitable for daily use, as they are just debloated.
Factory reset only wipes user data.
App manager, click on the service or app then disable button. Caution that some are essential to things you might need, search and read here on xda for guides on what is pure bloat.
Bro! I'm using the same phone. Had loads of problems with Samsung's TouchWiz. Your phone is absolutely fine. Use Cyanogen CM11 it is way better. I have been using Cyanogen for almost 6-7 months and honestly I have had problems but XDA is always full of solutions.
Go to "get.cm" and use the automatic installer to install cyanogen into your phone without you having to do anything such as rooting and flashing.. Cyanogen Installer does it automatically for you. If you are not satisfied you can always manually install cm
" https://www.google.co.in/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&ei=AiF_VOnCFNO3uQSw1YEY&url=http://m.ibtimes.co.in/how-install-cyanogenmod-android-4-4-4-kitkat-cm11-m9-custom-rom-samsung-galaxy-s3-i9300-tutorial-606129&ved=0CBoQFjAA&usg=AFQjCNHiKLLDngZKWM8lvfSa15QTXRRzdA&sig2=VZslZMxWssAwAyjfm0F8WQ"

2. USB
3. A PC
4. INTERNET

Thanks for the hints. I found this thread witch can be helpful: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/themes-apps/applications-safe-to-remove-t1069924
I think I will use Titanium Back Up App to remove unused services. Crap, I'll have to root the phone! I ll wait till I get a new phone, I'm looking for a good LTE-A no QHD (just FullHD) candidate.
Returning to the thread point, does all brands have this kind of performance problems or are there some more stock optimized phones? I'm hesitating getting away from Samsung, even if the OLED screen are really great (excepted the color saturated ones like the Alpha's). I was told HTC was more optimizing its layer, but I don't know if it is really true...
ROOTING your phone will unlock endless possibilities!
Regarding HTC, their flagship devices are very good.. Always first with updates right after google launches for their nexus devices very good sound and faster than other same priced smart phones.
Even Nexus devices are really a great deal giving you stock android with great performance and .01% lag.
Samsung is a more feature based smart phone with over used RAM and disabling the system apps causes the system to crash every now and then. I too love Samsung devices but prefer to use the stock android or even a custom ROM instead of TouchWiz.

Eventually, I rooted my phone, as it has no more warranty anyway. I've unistalled some forced system apps, frozen some RAM resilient apps/services. Now I have an average of 200 MB free RAM and the screens loading in TouchWiz are fast as at the beginning
So, thanks to your help, I can answer my own question about performance loss: too many resilient services for a 1GB RAM phone; it's about time I get a new phone
I hesitated to root the phone because I will give it to my girlfriend and she is the type of user clicking on every OK button when she gets a dialog. How she said she will not take the phone because I tinkered with it! Ah women ...
