A no cost fix for the hiss noise problem - HTC Desire X

Got myself a DX, fell in love but due to the hiss I had to break up with it and returned it. Got myself a DXD (dual sim) hoping that the hiss noise would be solved, and fell in love once more, but sadly the hiss noise level was not noticeable improved.
Then all of a sudden I was struck with an idea. How would the noise be affected if I'd just applied some simple office scotch over the phone speaker? In theory higher frequencies should be more reduced by this than lower.
With little enthusiasm I applied some office tape covering the small holes + the bigger rectangular hole and called...
Guess what? The noise was almost not noticeable any more. I didn't believe my ears. I'm not surprised if you wont believe me, but try it, it wont cost you anything.
Offcourse You will loose some of the audio level, and also some of the higher frequencies, but I'd say it will not affect the frequencies of speech to any noticeable level.
So, there it is, a no cost fix for the most annoying shortcoming of this brilliant little phone.
Take a piece of tape, put it on a clean glossy surface such as glass. Use a scalpel to cut a suitable size and apply it. Press firmly. It will be almost unnoticeable. Just briefly use some alcohol and lint free cloth to remove the adhesive from the edges of the tape so it wont pick up dirt and it will last nice for quite long.
I've never been deeper in love, with a phone that is. I wonder if alcohol has anything to do with it.
In times where apps solves almost every problems, I feel very self-righteous regarding this hands on solution.
Any donations to support my audio quality development of the DX are much welcome.
Over'n out.
Cheers

Thank you for the wonderfull read haha
Might try this, although I am more bothered by the hiss over headphones... and this "fix" wont quiet work there I fear.

Two quick hardware questions about Aria for other owners

Received my Aria from Amazon this week. $339 for this thing is pretty sweet for a no-contract phone. This is my first Android phone and I really like it. Two items are bugging me. If everyone else has the same issues then I'm not going to worry about it.
1. Headphone jack seems a little hissy/staticy on podcasts and music with decent quality earbuds. More noticable on podcasts though. Probably just spoiled by my Zune and my Nokia 5800 as these devices make headphone output a top priority. Is this par for the course?
2. Flipping the phone over in a dark room there is a light leak around the right rear bottom screw hole showing through the cover. There is a little gap that is not there around the other holes. There is no light showing anywhere else. Almost looks like the hole for the cover was just cut slightly too large so it left a little gap. Nothing major, but just wanted to see if it was just my unit. I could definitely photograph it.
1. Audio quality for me seems decent. Then again I'm not an audiophile and have never had a Zine.
2. I have it too. Dann! Cannot unsee!

I have also noticed the hiss problem. It is readily apparent to me in listening to podcasts, but not music (except in parts containing silence).
The second part I am unsure of as I never bothered to look at the back of my phone in darkness. I'll do so later tonight and edit this post if I remember.
Edit: I just went into the bathroom with the lights off and the bottom right corner does show light through the screw hole. Maybe it allows you to orient the phone when looking at the back in complete darkness?

Hiss
after reading the posts on the Hiss on the HTC Aria. I searched Google-HTC aria hiss and came up with several major phone reviewers writing about hearing the hiss sounds on calls. they didnt mention if the hiss was coming from the earbud but this will change my mind about purchasing the ARia.
with music you wont hear it but my ears cant stand hiss on phone calls as they are many slient spots in conversation.
With decent headphones there is most definitely hiss coming from the headphone out. I've tried it with several different compression formats. It's not horrible, but there is more than exists on a DAP. It's unfortunate if you care about quality at all, but the phone will still work as a backup player I guess.

Issue with headphones and sound

Hello,
I'm experiencing sound issues on an I9300, which I bought used. The phone indicates that there are headphones inserted, which leads to no sound from the loud speaker or the earpiece. Using Soundabout I can get them both back, which leads to hardware problem and means I cannot use any headphones.
I have cleaned the 3.5mm jack using a match and duct tape, also with a cotton swab, moistened with alcohol. Didn't help me with the issue so I've decided to buy a whole new loud speaker module. After testing it I found out that the problem isn't actually caused by the jack. When I disassembled the phone I have found some spots. The phone has likely been moistened. The spots looked caused by muddy water or probably cola, because some parts were stuck. Then I got pretty convinced that the issue is with the motherboard.
On the Internet I have found a motherboard treatment with isopropyl alcohol. I've bathed the MB for 10 minutes in that liquid, then let it dry but didn't work either.
Buying another MB would probably solve the problem, but I'm looking for alternative options. I gave $80 for the phone and a new MB costs $30. I'd just get rid of the phone instead, but I just don't feel like buying a low-end phone, either spending all my savings on a high-end one because the Archidroid experience, thanks to JustArchi, is pretty much all what I'm looking for.
Spoiler
Sorry for my English, I'm trying my best.

Not-so-decent build quality?

So I don't know if any of you feel the same, but I'm sort of skeptical of the build quality on this phone. Ever since I got it its felt sort of on the cheap/flimsy side to me. Maybe that's just coming from the fact that my previous phone (Moto x pure edition) was extremely thick and heavy. Does anyone else feel this way?
Plus I keep hearing about bending issues (I know youve probably seen way too much about that) which seems to reaffirm my observation that the phones on the fragile side. I'm afraid to take it out of my case because the case might bend the frame!
This is probably the worst place to ask this question, but the build quality of this phone certainly isn't the best out there. It's not the worst either. The build quality is more perceived than reality.
The bend issue has been well documented... Not just here but on the net overall (reddit, etc.). There have also been other issues posted such as color tinted screens, uneven color screens, screen not flush to the frame, paint coming off the color variants, camera visor cracking or coming apart, loose buttons, speaker grill falling off, bottom piece on the back discoloring or not being flush, among some other small things.
With all of that being said, every phones has some of these issues pop up from time to time. It just seems the 6P has some more nagging ones.
But I'm not here to say your device will exhibit any of these. With proper care it might be ok. It seems like there might be some luck involved too. Either way, good luck!

I'm an idiot... What's the small hole at the top of the V30?

asd
The small top hole is one of the microphones. There's an identical one on the bottom of the phone. So, you can make stereo recordings.
https://goo.gl/images/VqxsYw
The earpiece actually turns into a 3rd microphone for high decibel environments, like live concerts.
But that top one is one of the two "regular" microphones.
Thanks, I thought so. Is it only for recording, or for noise reduction too? Recording I don't care about. Also, should I plug it with glue?

On autopilot I was going to put in a SIM card in my brand new phone and pressed where the hole was on my previous phone. Bad mistake, I guess... I probably put it right through something vital. Because I used the small hole at the top of the phone. Not the side. The light wasn't all that good, so I didn't notice that there was no SIM holder there. My guess is that it is a mike of some sorts, but I tried to record sound and had no problems with that. And it seems like there's a mike at the bottom of the thing too. So what did I mess up this time?
Edit: And does this mean that the phone isn't water resistant anymore? Can I stuff a bit of black silicone glue (the type used in bathroooms) in there with the pointy tool to make it water resistant again?
Edit 2: Oh, please drop the idiot jokes. I know it! Googling I have seen that I am far from the only one that has done that, I just would like to know exactly what it is on this phone, and if I should plug the hole to keep i waterproof. That's rather important for me, because I am an avid hobby crawfish and crab fisher and will probably get water splashing over this.

Aren't there barometer measuring apps for that ?
I read that by checking on pressure you can find out if your phone is still water resistant

If you don't want to tackle it, cell phone repair shop can.
That top mic is probably used for noise reduction during phone calls (since it's the top mic and you would speak into the bottom one), but used for recording stereo when actually recording? I'm sort of guessing on this.
If someone who is audio has better answer, jump in.
zacharias.maladroit, I have also read that. But I have read that it doesn't work as well, since the holes "breathe", they are mes of goretex or similar material. But I'll try anyway, thanks.
ChazzMatt, Interesting, thanks! Looking at that video at around 4:55 it may seem like the pin must have penetrated to the side of the microphone! I think I see the pinhole to the right of where the actual microphone is. As for fixing it, I am far to clumsy. But using a shop is of course an option, the only thing is that the phone is brand new and I'm guessing I'll loose the warranty for that. But I think I will first of all find out if the microphone isn't damaged, and then I will see what happens when I cover the hole. If it doesn't change the call qualty I will probably choose (at least for now) to glue shut that pinhole. If it is a problem for call quality I can maybe live with that using a silicone case and a piece of electrical tape over the pinhole when I go out to fish.

Yeah, 4:55 - 5:30 on that video shows taking out the old mic and putting in the new, for anyone else who needs to do it.

Super easy fix for rattling vibrator motor

open up your phone (check youtube on how to do that) and put some soft 1 millimeter thick sticky electrical tape on top of the round vibrating motor on the right side besides the USB-C connector.
I used this tape: https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B01DUI4CF2/ref=oh_aui_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 It is 0,75mm thick self sealing electrical tape that is sticky on both sides.
The problem seems to be that the metal housing of the motor needs to be isolated from the metal back plate of the phone. metal on metal = rattling noise. No need to pull any cables. I left the fingerprint reader connection on while doing this fix.
Don't put to much tape on it though because it hardens with too much pressure on the back plate of the phone and the isolating properties are gone (rattles again)
Hope this helps someone who is looking for a solution for this. I could not find any real fix for this. The rattling noise was driving me nuts.
Thanks for this. I'll try it when I get the chance. It appears a small section of us have this problem, as I don't see many people complaining about it. The only fix I had ever used so far, was to flash a custom kernel with vibration intensity control and reducing it to around 70-ish strength.

I am totally happy with my very stable B10 + LOS15.1 and I really did not want to go through another clusterf--- of flashery again. It is differently a bad design choice. The vibration motor almost touches the "roof", the aluminum chassis. they placed a tiny round "sponge" on the roof where it touches with the motor. I bet it just looses it's elasticity over time and the motor starts slightly touching the roof.
