[Q] activate or root first ? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Just got a Verizon s4 I would like to root so I can use tethering and maybe custom Roms. Should I activate then root. Root then activate or does it matter? This is new phone and new sim card? If the phone is behind on ota would it be better to not let any ota get applied then root etc? Any other things I should be aware of? I have read the posts on things to know on the various builds on this phone.

A post like this would go in troubleshooting/q+a section.
However....rooting after activation or before makes no difference. Just delay the ota if you activate first. What build are you on? That will determine your root method.

I always activate first then root. I have activated and will root it next week. Is your provider Verizon? If it is you should be fine updating as long as the update is NOT 4.4 kit Kat. If you ota update to 4.4, I've heard that Verizon trips something so the know if you have rooted your phone and void the warranty.

Warranty voiding only matters if you have to send it back to Samsung (and even then Sammy a lot of times will still fix it). If you are paying for insurance through VZW (it should be Assuron) they don't care at all if you have rooted, installed Custom ROMs, tripped Knox. They just swap the phone out for you period. So only if you would have to send the phone to Samsung does that matter, and only sometimes at that.

All true, thanks for clarifying. I bought my s4 without a contract and have insurance thru securanty so I don't really care about Verizon

Hum just found out that securanty doesn't cover software issues of you have rooted your phone. Guess if better make sure I get it rooted before a 4.4 ota update

My bad on wrong forum
I am on verizion not sure what the build is, as I'm still waiting for the phone to arrive. I did not purchase the phone threw verizion. As I have the unlimited data and plan on keeping it.
I like the cm roms but from what I read unless i'm on cetain build (mdk) I can't use cm, has to be rom that supports safestrap. So if I want cm i should not let ota happen.
Hence my question on if I should not let the phone ota once activated, or activate first then root etc.
Will an ota strip root ?
Thanks for the info

You can activate the phone just do not perform the update. I literally just got the S4 yesterday, brand new, through amazon. It was on the MJ7 build.
I didn't put the sim in until after I did the root and rom installation, that was just my method. It does not mean I could not have done the same after activating it. Check out my thread where I asked a similar question. The links in there will up you root and install the correct roms according to your build.

common census of those of us that root and run custom ROMS is not to take OTA . Good chance root will be forever lost as 4.4 android is more securely locked down than 4.3.

[Q] Noob with a Verizon S4 and root question

I have a rooted Nook tablet so not a complete noob, but how safe is the root process for a verizon Galaxy s4? I'd like to root it so I can get rid of some of the junk apps and install others I want, but I void my two yr warranty...thoughts from the experts? just want to feel comfortable moving forward and if so, is there a set of clear instructions somewhere?
Thanks to all

I have also rooted verizon schi545 cm10'd I did not see aps to sd so now I went back to stock mdk 4.2.2 so now what take update or is there another rom that has aps to sd ?

Instead of an asinine comment that does you no go, here's some info.
Yes, rooting will void the warranty. However, you can always Odin to go back to stock should you have an issue that requires returning your phone to VZW.
I've rooted both my old S3 and my current S4. I JUST started rooting on the S3, so I'm relatively new as well but have learned a lot. My S3 was stock rooted, but I took the plunge with my S4 and am running HyperDrive ROM which is HOLY MOLY sweetness.
It's up to you, but if you're going to root, perhaps look at the ROMs that are available and flash one. I'm not sorry that I started flashing Roms. Not one bit

How old is your S4? The reason that I ask is that there was an OTA update the broke root. Currently there are Dev's looking into how to root with the new firmware.
Have you installed the OTA update?
Phone is about a month old...I have made no changes to the existing phone so I don.t know about the OTA update (although the VW software that came with it appears to update the phones software when plugged into laptop)

No.....there is no way to uninstall the update. Patience, young rooting grasshopper! A new method will be out shortly, I would imagine. Doesn't usually take too long,
Much appreciated...and lastly can you point me to how I would reinstall what you refer to as Odin should I screw up a future root process?

[Q] Update to MI1 from VRUAMDK

I'm currently rooted on VRUAMDK with (what I believe to be anyway) the first method from when the phone was released. I didn't have much time to bother with it when ME7 came out so I just froze SDM in TiBu and ignored it until now.
Today I saw the info about the MI1 update and decided to give it a shot updating. I saw that it was already rooted so I figured I'd just go for it and do an OTA after unfreezing SDM. However, when I tried that the install restarted the phone into Team Win Recovery and didn't complete. I assume this was because TWR blocks the install to avoid you losing root or something like that.
What I'm wondering is if there's a way to update to MI1 through TWR or some other alternative to the Verizon OTA so I don't lose root at all? I would like to know if there's a similar method for rooted phones with ME7 (since my girlfriends phone is rooted on that.).
Thanks in advance.
Don't take the OTA. Just get an MI1 stock deodex ROM. For the love of God keep your bootloader intact. The newer ones are not exploitable.

Okay, I thought that might be the right course of action but wasn't sure that the ROMs were equivalent of an OTA or just a custom rebuild of the old version.
As for my Girlfriend whose phone came with ME7? Should she just take the OTA and then Root again?
The MI1 OTA, from what I've gathered, enables a custom software counter. So unless she's planning on staying fully stock I would avoid the update. MI1 didn't really change enough to justify anyone to update as far as I know.
By custom software counter, I mean that if you were to tinker with your phone too much, it would blow a permanent qfuse that would let Samsung know not to grant your warranty when the time comes.

Neither update offers anything of real value that the custom rom's aren't bringing to the table. Hell there are flashable radios even. Apps to SD for me7 might be the only useful feature. But there are custom me7 roms. Wait on the devs to update you.

No real value over the MDK release. It just locks things down.
Get one of the ROMs based on MI1.
Move along,,,, Nothing to see....

If I am still on MDK, can I use any rom (4.3/4.4) or only roms for 4.2.2 MDK?
Things were much simpler on my GNex

You can flash any rom you want. The only way you'll lock yourself down is if you take an official update.

Hey folks...... :highfive: I'm currently working on my Ex Wifes phone SCH-I545. I've not updated or done anything to her phone since I rooted and installed Beanstown. Quite some time ago. Any way, Her Android version is 4.2.2/VRUAMDK. :good: TWRP for recovery, not sure the version. My question is, Can I just flash any of the latest ROMs to her phone? I just want to make sure I don't screw her phone up. @Crawshayi, I see your answer right there. I just want to double check and know that I won't lock her phone down.
I really appreciate you guys. Without you and XDA, I'd be completely lost.
Sincerely
David C
Edit: Thanks guys. Everything worked perfect. My phones are running flawless.

Q: Do I goto 4.3 ?

All:
I have my note II rooted, and its running 4.1.2
I received the OTA today, and I chose not to download it. Just curious on what folks are doing ?
I dont run any custom rom on my Note II, I just use it for rooting purposes....
if I do want to upgrade to 4.3 what is the suggested path of action ?
I thought I could use wugfresh I guess not though ?
Thanks

Once you upgrade to 4.3 OTA, your bootloader is locked and root is gone, along with the generally unwelcome addition of Samsung's KNOX technology. No bootloader exploit currently exists. If you upgrade by flashing one of the ROM's here on XDA or the non-OTA update to 4.3 (check the Android Development forum), you get the latest software and keep an unlocked bootloader & root.

Wife gave me my Christmas present yesterday...(a Note 2 she bought used...lovely phone). It started an update when I fired it up, (has been so long since I rooted my Bionic, I completely forgot about OTA's) It now has 4.3, and the only sort of tethering I can mange with it is usb pdanet, which merely qualifies as 'better than nothing', as it often drops out. Might have to put the damn thing in a drawer and fire up the Bionic until the tech gods here work it out. Am downloading a zip from another thread mentioned by Tfly12 that purports to get around the entitlement check...will see

I made the same move after my speaker started going on my BIONIC, fortunately for me I made the move to the N2 a few months ago. If you are lucky and someone is able to get the bootloader unlocked on 4.3, you should find this device much easier to work with then using Safestrap and all that other jazz. Odin is sort of like using HOB except I have only had to use it twice and not constantly. Once to unlock the bootloader initially and just recently to update the modem and wifi parameters when I made the move to 4.3
Hopefully someone can help you get set up to use the N2 the way you need it.

So Basically - If stock 4.3 this phone is garbage?

So I used to have my phone unlocked. I figured the stock 4.3 OTA would be a good idea so I flashed it back to stock via Odin because I am prepared to get a new phone. So with that said...
If you have 4.3 Stock, is the only thing you can do now to just sit miserably with a crappy phone that:
1) Has to remain on 4.3 TouchWiz Roms via a beta safestrap program that appears the developer has stopped developing for
2) Can accept the 4.4 OTA (when it comes) update but then lose root indefinitely so no more free tether etc
Because I really miss being able to do what I wanted with my device I paid hundreds of dollars for....
I swear there's got to be some kind of way to sue to get access to my device I own....
Pretty much. There are Roms to flash but not many it seems. TouchWiz really sucks. Locked bootloader sucks. Kind of really regretting the upgrade to the Note 2 to be honest. Should have done research before buying the phone and updating to 4.3 JB.
At the moment though I'm running SRemix v4 and it's pretty cool. Basically all stock with Wifi Tether hack built in. Good stuff.

i dont get your complaint. you said you were getting a new phone. you clearly do not like TW. so since you are buying a new phone anyways, buy one that you like. IMO the note 2 is the best phone ive ever owned. its your own fault that you unrooted and took OTA. I was warning people before 4.3 was even released that they should root and unlock then if they wanted to. we knew with the release of the S4 that rooting and unlocking bootloader was going to be unlikely moving fwd

I have no problem with touch wiz.
As much as I like custom ROMs I could live with a locked bootloader as long as I had root.
I like busybox for Unix commands and I like xposed mods for theming and such. So I would have to have root but could live with a locked bootloader.

Yeah I've no use for the unlocked bootloader per say, but I want 4.4.X and root, which apparently anything post 4.3 locked bootloader, will have a jacked up no-root system because they will need a 3 part root (Rom, Recovery and Kernel). Just ruins the 4.4.X update that will be stock locked bootloader. Might as well throw this thing away hah.
I need root. I can't live without that.

Current Verizon LG G3 (its 99 cents on sale, I have some questions)

Its time for an upgrade and I am eyeing the G3. Its currently $.99 on upgrade, and the price is playing a big part in my decision as money is tight right now and my older S3 is falling apart.
The thing that draws me to this phone is its unlocked bootloader. I have tried to research on my own, and what I have found is that you can get a custom recovery and ROM on a G3 from most stock OOB configs.
However, I cant find any super recent talk of it. That doesnt mean there isnt, it just means I havent found it on this forum or elsewhere and my Search-Fu is probably weak.. I believe I read that the G3 was recently updated OTA to lolipop, and my question is does the CURRENT, brand new G3 from verizon still have the capability to install custom roms? I am no smartphone expert, ive rooted and custom rom'd an old tablet and I am confident in my technical skills, and I just want to make sure that the phone (which i probably will go pick up from the VZW store tomorrow) is still viable because if its not, ill probably get a different phone. I will go deeper into research mode once I know for sure, I am worried though that the bootloader has been locked as this happened to the S3 later in its life after the Kitkat upgrade.
TLDR is a new G3 from verizon still ROM'able and such?
Thank you for your help, this is a pretty awesome site/forum and I hate to bother you all with noobish questions!

Plan on kdz'ing or tot'ing back to the stock firmware (10B), and then root, unlock, and install TWRP (custom recovery), and you'll be good to go to install custom roms! All OOB firmwares from Verizon can be kdz'ed or tot'ed back to the stock firmware, so yes that's a HUGE plus.

My root script will root 24B. Autorec works with 23C and only 23C. So 24B = Root only but 23C = Root + TWRP. Check out my toolkit which will do all of this for you. bit.ly/VZWG3Toolkit

Thanks! I'll check it out. I really don't want a new Rom anyway. Just interested in the battery saving apps

So just to clarify you are saying is that all G3's regardless of stock firmware, even the latest VZW version G3, can be rooted, unlocked and custom rom installed, it just make take a little extra work on some of them?

That's correct. And whether or not you want a custom ROM, I would still root AND unlock, that way you can install TWRP, take nandroid backups, etc. and thereby make it easier on yourself if you ever jacked up the phone doing something with root. I figure if you're gonna go to the trouble of rooting, might as well unlock too. Just my 2 cents
hello, I tried using your method but it tells me " cannot stat "busyboy" no such file or directory" and I tried using the other method you said to use incase that happened and I tried both the root.bat and send command option but still no success! please tell me what to do! I'm on 5.0.1 24B

Technically, it's not unlocked. There is an exploit that allows you to flash custom ROMs and kernels as if the bootloader was unlocked. On the surface, yes. You could say it's unlocked, but it it were truly unlocked, you could flash TWRP without having to be rooted. But you can't replace the recovery correctly without being rooted first. Hence, it's an exploit that skirts around the locked bootloader. It's still locked, but an exploit allows you to flash TWRP after you are rooted.
Here's what I know:
The first thing you must do is root the phone. You can root 24B as stated earlier by an earlier post.
Once rooted, you can flash TWRP but only if you are not on 24B. If you are on the latest OTA (24b), you can still flash TWRP, but it requires some extra steps. However, there is an app for this that you can install and run and it will prep your phone for TWRP and then install TWRP. It's basically a one-click TWRP install. You can get it in the Google Play store at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=b007.autorecvs985. Saves a lot of headaches.
So, I can one-click root my phone. Then install the LG G3 AutoRec-LP app to flash TWRP for me and I'm done!
You're bootloader is not unlocked, but TWRP is a "bumped" version. Bumping is the term they use for taking advantage of the exploit. But, you can't just flash any ROM out there for the G3. ROMs are specific to the model of the phone you have. For instance, you cannot take a D855 version (UK version of G3 I believe) of a ROM and flash it on your VS985 version. You'll brick it. ROMs have to also be "bumped" in order to work and be flashed, hence that is why the ROMs are specific to each model of the G3.
So if the AT&T version of the g3 has a ROM but the Verizon doesn't have that particular ROM, it's because the dev hasn't bumped their ROM for VS985. So, you can only flash those ROMs that are bumped for VS985.
But, the bumped version of TWRP and the ROMs act the same as if you had an unlocked bootloader, but it's an exploit that could be patched in the future. For whatever reason, LG and Verzion have not done that. Not sure why. But, caution on blindly taking any future OTAs. I would wait until you hear whether you can either revert back to a previous version to exploit and still root and bump on that previous version or not. Otherwise, you will be SOL.
As for unlocking the bootloader, that has only been allowed for overseas variants of the G3, but there is one issue that many might now like. When you truly unlock the bootloader with LG's unlocking tool, DRM is removed (which many would love), but then that means, some movie streaming services you use might not work any more because of the DRM removal. So, my feeling right now is, bumping is the best way to go.
Here's LG's description of what happens when you unlock it officially using their tool (mind you, as I stated, this is only for overseas variants of the G3):
