So Basically - If stock 4.3 this phone is garbage? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

So I used to have my phone unlocked. I figured the stock 4.3 OTA would be a good idea so I flashed it back to stock via Odin because I am prepared to get a new phone. So with that said...
If you have 4.3 Stock, is the only thing you can do now to just sit miserably with a crappy phone that:
1) Has to remain on 4.3 TouchWiz Roms via a beta safestrap program that appears the developer has stopped developing for
2) Can accept the 4.4 OTA (when it comes) update but then lose root indefinitely so no more free tether etc
Because I really miss being able to do what I wanted with my device I paid hundreds of dollars for....
I swear there's got to be some kind of way to sue to get access to my device I own....

Pretty much. There are Roms to flash but not many it seems. TouchWiz really sucks. Locked bootloader sucks. Kind of really regretting the upgrade to the Note 2 to be honest. Should have done research before buying the phone and updating to 4.3 JB.
At the moment though I'm running SRemix v4 and it's pretty cool. Basically all stock with Wifi Tether hack built in. Good stuff.

i dont get your complaint. you said you were getting a new phone. you clearly do not like TW. so since you are buying a new phone anyways, buy one that you like. IMO the note 2 is the best phone ive ever owned. its your own fault that you unrooted and took OTA. I was warning people before 4.3 was even released that they should root and unlock then if they wanted to. we knew with the release of the S4 that rooting and unlocking bootloader was going to be unlikely moving fwd
---------- Post added at 05:04 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:02 PM ----------
not to mention there was a rooted 4.3 TW rom before you took the OTA

Thanks for your quality response

I have no problem with touch wiz.
As much as I like custom ROMs I could live with a locked bootloader as long as I had root.
I like busybox for Unix commands and I like xposed mods for theming and such. So I would have to have root but could live with a locked bootloader.

Yeah I've no use for the unlocked bootloader per say, but I want 4.4.X and root, which apparently anything post 4.3 locked bootloader, will have a jacked up no-root system because they will need a 3 part root (Rom, Recovery and Kernel). Just ruins the 4.4.X update that will be stock locked bootloader. Might as well throw this thing away hah.
I need root. I can't live without that.

Never accept OTA's without research if you value being unlocked and with root.

Q: Do I goto 4.3 ?

All:
I have my note II rooted, and its running 4.1.2
I received the OTA today, and I chose not to download it. Just curious on what folks are doing ?
I dont run any custom rom on my Note II, I just use it for rooting purposes....
if I do want to upgrade to 4.3 what is the suggested path of action ?
I thought I could use wugfresh I guess not though ?
Thanks

Once you upgrade to 4.3 OTA, your bootloader is locked and root is gone, along with the generally unwelcome addition of Samsung's KNOX technology. No bootloader exploit currently exists. If you upgrade by flashing one of the ROM's here on XDA or the non-OTA update to 4.3 (check the Android Development forum), you get the latest software and keep an unlocked bootloader & root.

Wife gave me my Christmas present yesterday...(a Note 2 she bought used...lovely phone). It started an update when I fired it up, (has been so long since I rooted my Bionic, I completely forgot about OTA's) It now has 4.3, and the only sort of tethering I can mange with it is usb pdanet, which merely qualifies as 'better than nothing', as it often drops out. Might have to put the damn thing in a drawer and fire up the Bionic until the tech gods here work it out. Am downloading a zip from another thread mentioned by Tfly12 that purports to get around the entitlement check...will see

Can't flash that zip though can ya? Trust me. Loosing tethering is the biggest thing that ticks me off about 4.3.
Hate having to have an nonroot phone for work.

not sure yet, my last experience with this was the Bionic....and after I got it doing what I wanted it to do.....never bothered with it again. Seems like I should wait then... It tried to download and install last night but it failed, so it just rebooted and i am good... probably because i have recovery on... not sure....
I prefer to honestly just go back to stock, and then maybe goto 4.3 once there is a good root out there....

I made the same move after my speaker started going on my BIONIC, fortunately for me I made the move to the N2 a few months ago. If you are lucky and someone is able to get the bootloader unlocked on 4.3, you should find this device much easier to work with then using Safestrap and all that other jazz. Odin is sort of like using HOB except I have only had to use it twice and not constantly. Once to unlock the bootloader initially and just recently to update the modem and wifi parameters when I made the move to 4.3
Hopefully someone can help you get set up to use the N2 the way you need it.

stock 4.3 may be unlocked &rooted with jtag!?!

I just bought a note 2 off of swappa that is completely stock and on 4.3. Since reading many post about Knox and how this bootloader is completely locked down now I contacted mobile tech videos to see if they could unlock, root, and put custom recovery on this phone with the knox 4.3 update... They replied YES!!! Their guy emailed me back saying that they do have a service for downgrading, rooting, and cutom recovery install...I'm not sure about people with the knox already flagged or other circumstances. You would have to email and check...but for 30$ in my stock 4.3 locked situation this seems like my only option to install custom rooms and recovery. I haven't done it yet. I will be within a couple days. But I have used their service before on a droid dna unlock with no issues. We shall see. Just though some of you might like to have the info to contact them for yourselves.
Please update us on the results when you do get it back. I'd take a fee if I could get it unlocked.

Yes I will update...not sure if they are going to downgrade then unlock it or if they have the ability to unlock 4.3. but the guy said they have what it takes to unlock, root, install custom recovery, and custom rom different samsung phones on the 4.3 knoxed bootloader. I get the phone this week and will be shipping it when I get it straight to mobile tech videos

I just emailed them as well and here's the reply. " I do indeed have the ability to revert the Knox bootloader back to the 4.1.2 bootloader." looks like I'll have to try them.
Color me skeptical. Optimistic, but skeptical.
What is Mobile Tech Videos' reputation? And is this something generally possible with JTAG?

SUCCESS!!!!!!!
so i just got my phone back and it was a Success. MobileTech was able to downgrade my stock 4.3 note2 back to 4.1.2 stock, unlock it, install cmw,and root the phone.(no knox tripped or unofficial software flags shown). when i turned the phone on it wanted to download the 4.3 ota again so i freaked out, because usually my rooted phones dont try to ota update. so i odined it with the kies 4.1.2+ pit. took it back to locked stock 4.1.2, and then ran casual to reunlock/root/recovery-Success again...(meaning we can go back to clean stock if need be). It wanted to ota again so i just froze the SDM 1.0 apk with titanium back up. Josh from mobile tech said this will be a new service for our phones and will be charging 60-80$ for the service. email them/him if you have any ????s....He also warned me that even after jtagging if we take the 4.3 ota its back to locked with knox. But I am back to installing roms again and very pleased.

I know this wasn't my issues, but just to recommend Mobile Tech and their great and fast service. I hard bricked my phone and had to send it in to get jtag and they were nice, answered questions and quick with their service. Its nice because they are located about a 1 hour away from me. If they say they can do it I would believe them.
Had anybody else been able to confirm this? It seems that there are a lot of threads about people being bummed about their phones that have 4.3 them. This could be their solution.

This is a repost because I saw someone preaching about the MobileTechVideos again. I have spent a vast amount of research and hands on technical work on downgrading
From: VRUEMJ9 4.3
To: VRALJB 4.1.1
And it possible. The problem isn't downgrading the ROM, it's the bootloader, it consistently stays at a 4.3 Bootloader while the ROM is at 4.1.1. Your post looks more like a promotion/advertisement, therefore I ask you Steurer1, can MobileTechVideos:
1) Downgrade the bootloader
2) Unlock the bootloader
3) Load a custom recovery (CWM, Philz, TWRP).......
4) Furthermore installing a custom rom?
From your post, you acknowledged this, so assuming MobileTechVideos can accomplish all this, then these guys are gurus and I will happily send them my phone, tuck my tail between my legs, and hats off to them! Taking it a step further, this is what fellow techies really want: If we could please get a technical post by MobileTechVideos here on XDA describing the process that they used to perform the four requirements above. This would be the most beneficial post that the rest of the Note II SCH-I605 4.3 community could really appreciate. Awaiting a follow up Steurer1.

Well, looking at their site, you can see they are not going to do steps 2-4. That is up to you when you get your phone back. They are only going to downgrade the bootloader from the non-unlockable 4.3 version to the unlockable 4.1.2.
And I have no vested interest in the company and have never used their services, but by all indications that are a reputable business. Their name comes up constantly for unbricking devices.
Also, given that they currently have the market cornered on the service, I truly can't imagine they would release all the technical details on how they are doing it. They have a monetary interest to not let it get out, in fact. Just my two cents.

I have a galaxy note 2 gt-n7105 and running 4.3 with knox tripped at 0X1. everybody telling me you cant downgrade. I can only downgrade to 4.1.2 using a backup using clockworkmod. but the funny thing is using odin I can flash 4.1.1 I don't have a clue why no other older firmware cant be flushed using odin but I can flash 4.1.1 so Sguitari your telling me I am running 4.1.1 but still using the 4.3 locked bootloader ????????? CAN SOMEBODY SHED SOME LIGHT ON THIS. THANKS
worked for me
I didnt have the Knox issue but I did have a hard bricked NOTE 2. My jig didnt work and there was no life to the phone at all, but then I saw mobile tech videos site and sent in my device. My NOTE 2 was returned with in the stated time frame (I did not request rush service as this is not my primary device) and in perfect working condition. They are very easy to work with and have an excellent level of communication. An additional USB cable that I ordered was not in the return envelope but upon sending a polite email to Josh it was sent to me the next day. I would highly recommend mobile tech for any problem that you are not able to fix yourself.

[Q] activate or root first ?

Just got a Verizon s4 I would like to root so I can use tethering and maybe custom Roms. Should I activate then root. Root then activate or does it matter? This is new phone and new sim card? If the phone is behind on ota would it be better to not let any ota get applied then root etc? Any other things I should be aware of? I have read the posts on things to know on the various builds on this phone.

A post like this would go in troubleshooting/q+a section.
However....rooting after activation or before makes no difference. Just delay the ota if you activate first. What build are you on? That will determine your root method.
I always activate first then root. I have activated and will root it next week. Is your provider Verizon? If it is you should be fine updating as long as the update is NOT 4.4 kit Kat. If you ota update to 4.4, I've heard that Verizon trips something so the know if you have rooted your phone and void the warranty.

Warranty voiding only matters if you have to send it back to Samsung (and even then Sammy a lot of times will still fix it). If you are paying for insurance through VZW (it should be Assuron) they don't care at all if you have rooted, installed Custom ROMs, tripped Knox. They just swap the phone out for you period. So only if you would have to send the phone to Samsung does that matter, and only sometimes at that.
All true, thanks for clarifying. I bought my s4 without a contract and have insurance thru securanty so I don't really care about Verizon

Hum just found out that securanty doesn't cover software issues of you have rooted your phone. Guess if better make sure I get it rooted before a 4.4 ota update

I am on verizion not sure what the build is, as I'm still waiting for the phone to arrive. I did not purchase the phone threw verizion. As I have the unlimited data and plan on keeping it.
I like the cm roms but from what I read unless i'm on cetain build (mdk) I can't use cm, has to be rom that supports safestrap. So if I want cm i should not let ota happen.
Hence my question on if I should not let the phone ota once activated, or activate first then root etc.
Will an ota strip root ?
Thanks for the info

You can activate the phone just do not perform the update. I literally just got the S4 yesterday, brand new, through amazon. It was on the MJ7 build.
I didn't put the sim in until after I did the root and rom installation, that was just my method. It does not mean I could not have done the same after activating it. Check out my thread where I asked a similar question. The links in there will up you root and install the correct roms according to your build.

common census of those of us that root and run custom ROMS is not to take OTA . Good chance root will be forever lost as 4.4 android is more securely locked down than 4.3.

No need for task killers anymore!!! <3

So I'm currently back on Stock ZV6 waiting patiently for the Lollipop update (will return to root once lollipop is rooted) because I want lollipop as soon as it's released OTA. Since I don't have root anymore, I am unable to delete stock apps that potentially slow the phone down. Since I am not on root, I no longer use Greenify as it is not the same without root. My phone has been draining throughout the day even with normal use (texting, snapchat, facebook, clash of clans, etc.) and it would be around 20-30% at the end of the day (11-12pm-ish). I never had that bad of battery life on root.
I was able to look in the developer settings in the settings app and turn on "Do not keep activities". I have found that turning that on basically turns off multitasking and kills every app (stops it from running like Greenify or task killer apps do) after you exit.
My battery has been so much better and I no longer think I will ever use Greenify or any task killer in the future (with or without root) because of this stock feature.
I'd thought I'd share <3
Thanks for the info. Just curious, but does it keep apps like gmail from notifying of new content when you're not in gmail?

You do realize that it will likely be a very long time, if ever, before a root exploit for Lollipop on the G3 is found. Right now it seems to be impossible to root Lollipop on a phone with a locked bootloader. If you really want rooted stock lollipop, the best (and maybe only) approach is probably to use Flashtool to revert to ZV4, root, and wait for a pre-rooted lollipop ROM to come along.

I do realize that, heehee. I don't mind waiting. My mindset is to just see how I like the lollipop update asap (once it comes ota) and if I like or don't like, i'll root back to zv6 or aosp (in hopes of better functionability with lollipop radio, etc.)
thanks though!

But what if the restore tool doesn't work like that on the new 5.0 OTA? What if it won't let you downgrade to ZV4 in order to root and bump? The other thing is OTAs are usually captured and posted here in the forums for flashing pretty quickly after they are released so I highly doubt you'd be waiting for anything longer than a few days for it to get posted. There's a strong possibility that we may not see root on the stock 5.0 because of the way lollipop changes things (not having an unlocked bootloader is the main issue here). I have a friend with a G3 on AT&T and I've been telling him this same thing: It's a huge risk waiting if you are at some point in the near future going to want to use custom roms, especially when LG is going to make it neigh impossible after this next OTA. If you have little desire to flash custom roms or have root permissions, no hurry lol. AOSP is sooooooo smooth on this phone and I would never want anybody to miss out on the opportunity to try it because LG wants to crack down on the exploits.

Yeah thanks man. As we speak, I am flashing back to stock zv4 and will root back to stock rooted zv6. I just hate to do it when we could get the update any day from now.
Thanks though!

I would recommend using BarRin unless you intend on using the included LG Health features and stuff (BarRin keeps the remote, camera, and other essential pieces, only removing the health stuff and other unnecessary nonsense... I believe there's a means to install these back into the ROM in the BarRin forum but it's been a while since I've been there). Yeah, I totally get what you mean. It's a tad inconvenient, I'll admit it, but nothing sucks work than being stuck on stock and not being able to modify it when desired. And like I said, I'm sure once it's out in the wild we'll get it posted on the forums within the span of a few days. No thanks needed; just looking to be helpful!

I do realize that, heehee. I don't mind waiting. My mindset is to just see how I like the lollipop update asap (once it comes ota) and if I like or don't like, i'll root back to zv6 or aosp (in hopes of better functionability with lollipop radio, etc.)
thanks though![/Qhundred

Just to reiterate a bit on what meyerweb and outofluck already said, I just wanna help clarify, if you decide you don't like the LP OTA, there is about a hundred to one chance that with the LP OTA you will NOT be able to downgrade to zv4 to get root back. Anti rollback is almost always included in OTAs. And as meyerweb said, there is no root far an OTA LP yet. And as was already said, if you keep root and custom recovery, the devs here will have the OTA ready in zip file and probably rooted in less than 2 days. You don't like the LG LP, then you can roll back. But if you take official LP OTA I almost guarantee you will not be rolling back, and will no longer have options as to which OS you want to use.
You'll get it here just as fast, AND you'll have ability to roll back (most likely).

Which Rom's can be flashed with safestrap?

Hello, not new to rooting and such but I'm a little confused. Just got this Note 2 after breaking my G2. I'm on ND7, managed to root and install safestrap. I've made a stock back up and flashed over my stock as there is no rom slot support yet. I've flashed Alliance 30 and it worked well. My question is, can I flash other Rom's like Wilson's CM12? My bootloader is still locked. Is there a safe way to unlock it? I've searched and found that if you have a locked bootloader you can't flash kernels. I think? Not trying to be annoying. Just confused. I haven't used safestrap since my old Razr days, lol. Any help would be awesome. Thanks in advance. ..

I think you can flash any rom using safestrap. The only ones I tried so far are DN3 and Alliancerom. They flashed with no problems. I would like to add on to this question though, Can I flash any mods using safestrap?
Right. Or kernels for that matter? It's strange because there's some people with unlocked bootloader's, some with safe strap, and some just plain old stock rooted (which was a pain in it's self).

Did a little more digging into the thread, basically if your bootloader is locked, the only Rom's that you can flash are those with the same build and kernel that you are currently on. So you were right. As far as flashing mods with safestrap, still unsure. ???

No other ROMs besides the above mentioned? Seems almost worth sending it to that company to downgrade

Installed Mocha DrIzzle, liking it so far except the network speed mod
If I couldnt stand to be without telelphone....

I'd be on the "Send it Off" wagon.
I've seen destructions for using ODIN to flash a KIES image in, and then go about fixing it that way but many many more posts saying this is impossible.
What I'd like to know, if I have to go with the same darn kernel etc, is how the everloving **** to get rid of ALL and I mean *ALL* of the crapware/verizonware/amazonware/etc and completely strip the touchwhiz down to just what I need....
This phone thing is a nasty addiction....:cyclops:

Anyone know if there is a list? I was just given this phone. I rooted it, but also stuck with the locked boot loader. I did install Safestrap and did a back up, and was able to create a ROM slot, but that is all I've done so far.
Since I'm "developmentally chsllenged" (I can follow instructions, but I can't do any development work or anything) I try to just go with trusted info, which has worked so far. I just came from a RAZR Maxx HD with CM12 and am not happy with the way this phone runs.
I'm in the same boat as you guys, and I believe you can only flash 4.4.2 ROMs. That's what I gathered from the Safestrap thread. However, you can (and should) backup your stock ROM in Safestrap and flash other ROMs over that.
I'm currently using Alliance, and it's decent. Nowhere near the amount of modifications as CyanideL, which is really what I want, but can't install because it's currently on Android 5.x.
Ridiculous what Samsung has done to this phone. Glad it was relatively cheap though, good lesson to avoid any manufacturer who locks the bootloader in the future.
Does anyone know if we can just flash an older version of the stock ROM? Couldn't we odin, or something, down to 4.1.x and go from there?

I have SS and did a back up, but I thought I read about people running into problems and then bricking? I think they got them back after doing some stuff but since I am no where as talented with this stuff I try to be cautious. I've rooted and SS' ed a Bionic and ran several ROM's on that one until replacing it with a RAZR Maxx HD that I rooted (and was able to take advantage of the exploit before they pushed a patch and unlocked the bootloader).
If I can just flash over the stock ROM safely, then I'll get flashing right away
I read the issues with bricking as well, but I think those people were trying to flash 5.x ROMs. I agree about wanting to avoid it though. I have a HTC One S that I saved from being bricked a few times, but I don't even wanna have to go through the process of that for the Note 2. Here's the Safestrap thread, if you're a little wary and would like to read more about it.
As far as I can tell, you should be good with flashing 4.4.2 ROMs, since that's what I did and we seem to have the same config (4.4.2 Note 2, Safestrap 3.72). The only thing I wonder is what TWRP you have. I have the latest 2.7.0.x. If that's what you have, you should be just fine with flashing a 4.4.2 ROM over the stock ROM.
