So, was browsing the Internet, when I found this..
Canonical has started releasing its own, ARM optimised Ubuntu versions for Android devices...
It runs alongside Android and has access to almost all its apps like Phone, Contacts, User apps etc..
It seems to be basically meant for Dual-Cores and when combined with a docking station, you have a full-fledged Ubuntu running on a Dual-Core chipset which you can view in full screen size on your TV Screen n stuff..
Read more here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/devices/android
http://mobile.theverge.com/2012/2/21/2812424/ubuntu-for-android-hands-on
PS: Don't you, in your wildest dream, think of running it on our lil screens with a Single core, 600mhz processor...

Wow, exciting! Too bad there's nothing concrete for users to try right now (unless I missed something).
It's sad how they say "In every dual-core phone, there’s a PC trying to get out."
But hey, who needs ubuntu when you have ice cream sandwich (not that I ever bought my phone with the thought of using it as a desktop)
Not At All MEANT for us....
If you read the full articles, it makes quite a lot of sense for a person who moves around a lot. Also the processing power in high-end phones should be enough for the OS to offer a decent experience.
One more reason to hold on to our beloved P500 for one more year and save the upgrade money for a multi-core phone . At least this way, when you upgrade you will be able to really feel the difference.
Thank you!
Greets!
Why not work on p500? Win7 runs on on 1GHz single core... 600MHz for an optimized version of ubuntu should work...
Sent from my LG-P500
I think... just because it needs one core to run Ubuntu, and another for android, so that dual-core phones are required
---a fairly silly guess really lol---

There is no mobile device that can run 2 OSs in the same boot... you need a lot of ram and tons of cpu... my 2.8GHz can't handle the android emulator...

But whats the use, even if we *Highly* optimise it, we dont have a docking station nor an HDMI out...
What will you do with a desktop OS on such a small screen??
My suggestion: wait a few years, earn nuff money and buy the best mobile around that can run Android+Chrome OS+Ubuntu+MeeGo+(Windows )+ what not...
Untill then, stick to this sh!t, we got enough development goin here already...

Seeing that video makes it obvious that this solution, at this point, is never going to replace a good desktop/laptop. The lag is there and is obvious, but at leat it promises to give you a chance to leave the big hardware at home if you choose to do so.

Where are they now?? Gone ryt??
Similarly, give ubuntu some time, it will run better...
N dont forget, that video uses a phone running 1ghz dual core thats not OC'd...
So give it sometime, it will be up and running just the way it does on PC...

The future is already here
There are already lightweight linux distros for embedded systems.
ArchLinuxARM for example runs on devices not much more powerful than our P500s
Pogoplug - 800Mhz ARMv5te 128 MB RAM & NAND
h t t p://archlinuxarm .org/platforms/armv5/pogoplug-series-4
You wouldn't run X on them. That's just eye candy.
But add a external USB hard drive, they become perfect
low power servers for media streaming, automated BT,
automated data backups, small webservers.
h t t p://archlinuxarm .org/support/guides/applications
Anyhoots, once a smartphone is EOL, it might be a good
project to repurpose them for the above tasks.
Oh yah, take a look at the $25 - $35 Raspberry Pi at wikipedia
hey guys, first post in a while, but here goes.
Im in the market for a new mobile phone. I dont mind what network I get the phone on, as I can have it unlocked for a fee, but if it is on o2 to begin with or unlocked it makes things much easier.
so my budget is £250 max, I was looking at getting a brand new phone for a change rather than a used device. i like watching movies on my phone (travel often, and study AS levels at school where i have 11 free periods a week )
what do you recommend? I need a good screen, 4"+, full touchscreen, a good camera, and a large amount of ram to keep up with app switching etc.
My first thought was the Motorola Atrix, I love the fingerprint reader, I think it is a great feature that I will use. plus, the phone is 229 from play.com with 10 quid cashback through quidco.
can you guys think of anything better? must be dual core too by the way, over 1ghz if possible, the atrix is 1ghz dual core with tegra 2 graphics, which is great.
Preferably something with an upcoming ICS update, which the atrix lacks
thanks in advance.

Atrix is a good phone, you won't have any problems with it
You have limited options since you had a budget and for that price, I think you're doing ok
hope this helps
While we wait for the Xperia U to have its own forum, we can do like the P guys and burglarize the Xperia S thread for a while.
The phone has picked some serious steam in Spain, because one carrier has launched a very aggressive campaign of phone subsidies which actually makes this phone free if you pay a 24 month contract which amounts to 10 dollars per month. With that subsidy, the subsidized phone costs actually less in the long run than the sim-unlocked one. Given that it totally destroys the likes of Oprimus L3, Galaxy Ace and other low end phones, it's flying from the shelves. In my case, I'm trading my Sensation with one of those phones. It's a pity, as I won't be able to run custom firmware or anything, but I think the trade off is acceptable.
I've read in a Chinese forum that the way to get in Flash mode is by keeping pressed VolDown while connecting the device to the computer. The latest Flashtool seems to recognize it. Once I get the phone I'll try to make an FTF file with whatever comes out of SEUS.
Is there anyone else with the phone who wishes to speak their wisdom?

My opinion
Had a play with both the P and U the other day and can safely say I made right choice with the S. Yes fastboot or flash mode is either hold vol up or down. The u looks ok and is a nice size ( looks like a mobile disco ) but the lag is horrid, why Sony did you use nova. And the P is so close to the S (size, looks) but yet so far away from the standard and specs (like getting the car you want but getting the cheapest package without aircon or electric windows). All I can say is good luck and hope you don't miss your Xperia play to much @logseman

Is this a joke or the xperia U has 4GB storage with no memory card?????????
We should not moan about the specs of the U, it's a low end device meant for people who want just a messaging phone with access to applications.
Not everyone has the need for the high end speced out phones you know.
Gingerbread is the only real drawback of the phone. It's tired and needs to be retired.

While the MWC videos are not as dramatic as you're portraying, lag is not a huge issue for me anymore, as I won't be playing many games on this fellow.
Thanks for the good wishes. I hope I'll be able to contribute a little bit here as I did in the Play forum
The phone does have 4 GB of accessible storage. It's the way Sony has to tell you "Buy the P". I'm not too bothered as we have a roomy system partition unlike in the Xperia Play.

The U will be getting ICS. The videos I've seen were convincing for me, and people have not complained about lag where I'm reading reports. It's true that GB is a let down, and I hope ICS will unleash the phone's real power.
You see, I just am not comfortable with the Sensation, it's nice but it heats way too much and the battery life is crud. This little feller should hold the line a wee bit longer.

Actually the xperia U just goes to show that sony has lost any business sense. Why would someone who wants a messaging phone with access to applications buy a dual core phone anyways? A single core phone with a bigger screen would actually be a better phone for that purpose.
Imagine people buying this phone without looking up it's specs, it's gonna happen and it's only gonna hurt the sony brand. And quite frankly cant blame people for that, I really wouldnt ever expect such a ridiculous limitation in a phone like this.
@ALL: It's actually 8GB, with at least (sic!) 4GB available to the user.

Poor marketing choice indeed. I am personally a Sony fan now but can't help noticing that the Japanese don't really have a good business sense. 16GB is also a limitation but only some people will be irked by that and the rest of the public will be fine with it. 8GB is unacceptable but 4GB is simply intolerable. Everyone who has a decent music collection will run out of space too quick. I am personally in favour of making the phone thicker and giving a bit more additional internal storage space, removable battery and a microSD card slot
Even my x8 got memory slot...
Wow Sony u begin to s8ck...

I don't see why not. Mali 400 MP GPU on the XU is plenty powerful. Almost as powerful as the Adreno 220 on our XS Plus it has to deal with a lower screen resolution (FWVGA)

I've had a chance to play with a demo unit yesterday. Runs nice, no UI lag, really fast and 6GB of storage. For the price it's one hell of a phone.
well im a proud owner of one
good camera, decent quality...perfect for a quick snap....
great video recording...very nice 720p videos...
no lags what so ever....ui is fine...
VERY GOOD 3d performance..... both psx emulators and n64 emulators work at a steady 50-60fps on both with graphics intensive roms...(spiderman, mario 64,revolt)
gta 3 runs flawlessly with zero lags...
quadrant scores it above the galaxy nexus.
good sound quality, decently loud speakers.
battery lasts 1.5 days with some 3d gaming and browsing and music.
u can get an xperia s battery for it (same battery model)...even 1900mah batteries are available one ebay.com (model: ba600)
total 8gb internal storage. 4gb user-accessable, 2gb for android, 2gb for apps.
usb otg works great...tried my joystick on it
looks sexy!
i thinks its perfect in every way...for its price range atleast.
only thing is storage. but i plan to keep my music and movies in a pendrive, and carry it with me...and plug it in when i need to...sounds convenient actualy
other than that it blows its competitors out of the water!
trust me worth buying...
the only thing it needs is root....anyone willing to help me root it?

It's a great phone, only paid £130 sim-free for mine in the UK; but the memory is small (512Mb). I just upgraded to ICS and rooted, and despite spending a couple of days fiddling around to reduce ram-hungry apps and processes, the dialer will occasionally crash when I try and use it, due to lack of available RAM. I am going to have to strip down even more apps and widgets to make it reliable. On Gingerbread I had the same number of apps and widgets and there were less problems. So if you are going to hang on to your next phone for a while, I would suggest waiting for a phone with 1Gb+ of memory.
I dont have any but any problems from day one,no.crashes.and wifi tetherimg always.worked, using my country costomized rom heres after 24 h phone usage ram,no killing or whatever.

there are specific set of people which would be even more than happy with Xperia U. these are the normal, general, non-power users upgrading from a dumbphone, or even smartphone owners before 2011.
from their old unit, they can now experience android and the apps it offers. with even better than usable single cores out there, they even get dual core CPU power, to browse the net, take and view pictures, internet messaging via whatsapp/imo, skype video calls, socialize in facebook/twitter, watch youtube, email, create short notes on notes applications, and many other useful tasks... all rendered in a bravia screen with high density of pixels which is very sharp and beautiful. the transparent color changing bar is another attractive feature which sets it apart from other phones which generally, all look alike.
the only thing not possible here would be the things that require storage, like local movie watching and to some extent music collection playing.
any other else, its as good as whatever phones out there.
with the expertise of the devs here in xda, who knows what more it can do.
thanks darth5zaft, I've tried that before but then gave it another shot after reading your post - but I still get lags and freezes when I have an app open and a call, or an sms comes through, everything slows down. So I've gone back now to using Auto Memory Manager off the Play Store, which might be doing the same sort of thing but I haven't had any slow-downs or lags over the last 24 hours, everything is zippy and I can't see the battery draining any faster
I agree, this phone does most of what a more expensive phone would do - I originally bought it just to replace the Nexus S I had which crapped out, with the plan being to upgrade at the end of that two year contract next March, but I will probably keep it a bit longer now that its set up nicely, there's little else I'm missing really.
Go for xperia u
U will luv it
Nice looks
Dual core
Plays hd games smoothly
Decent battery ( after. 54 fw )
And superb pricing
And regarding lagging
Almost all phones on stock fw lags
Even my father's galaxy note lags sometimes
So if u want to buy a decent budget android smartphone wid power bt limited space go for xperia u

A couple of people I know have an explorer. It's not the ideal phone considering the internal memory is less so you won't be able to install many apps or games on it.
I would recommend you go in for a brand like micromax which had better hardware at the same price points.
Send me a pm if you want more Info.

Well there aren't many roms for micromax and also most of em are crappy and they can't handle games for tegra 3 like dead trigger , etc very nicely and they hav lag almost everywhere including the home screen so it's $#!T any other option? Btw I can partition the ss card and use app2sd enabler and fix the internal space problem so it's ok
