[Q] Before I activate VZN GN2? OTA, Teather, Exchange - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Hi all,
I still have unlimited data and I'd like to make the most of it, so I'm hoping to find out if/how about a few things before I activate my VZN GN2
* Can I block ota update to prevent new limitations?
* Can I sync with MS Exchange server without buying the corporate data?
* Tethering options?... I'd love to drop my cable ISP.
I'd really love to avoid rooting if I possible, so I'm asking for stock options and apps. If I need to root just say so. I can dig around for mods myself... don't want to waste anyone's time. (Off the shelf solutions may be helpful to other noobs)
Thanks for the good work

Greetings
You'll need to have your device rooted to shut off the OTA updater...http://forums.androidcentral.com/ve...nently-prevent-note-2-ota-updating-4-3-a.html
If you wish to tether, FoxFi/PDANET is an option....http://pdanet.co/
As for the MS Exchange, I have no idea.
I know you said you'd rather not root your device, but by doing so, you can flash any number of custom ROMs that have OTA blocking and tethering baked in.

Thanks for the reply and the resources.
I've seen a few people post that the updates disable wifi tether, but that usb and bluetooth tether still work.
Also that a factory reset will restore the original os, so I could roll back if I want to root or if I need the warranty.
Thoughts on either?
Here's another Orwell quote for your troubles:
"The further a society drifts from truth, the more it will hate those that speak it."

Wireless Tether no root required!!!!

I am only reposting this because I know a lot of people have been talking about wanting this feature. Here is the link to the thread.

If I am "Late to the party" or you want to post the funny fail pictures, that is fine! I just felt this was worth posting. I did not know about it and I am sure others may not as well.
Basically the link talks about using a program called PDAnet Tablet edition. I was familiar with PDAnet but not a wifi version!
We need to stay way under the radar with this, guys.
I'm sure their not crazy about HTC unlocking the bootloader because of this.
Sprint is cracking down....monitoring data use and even sites visited.
Abuse here could be a big factor if Sprint throws up their hands and decides to cap data...which would S U C K.
I've had Bluetooth tether via PDAnet since my Treo 650 many years ago. Maybe I'm the only one but on all the phones I've had since then, I have ALWAYS found Bluetooth tether to be very tricky to set up, cumbersome and unreliable compared to the WiFi tether I FINALLY have on the EVO 4G. I presume the same would apply to the 3D. This is the main reason I haven't made the 4G --> 3D upgrade yet. So for me personally the Bluetooth tether option isn't that grand.
Hijack: does anyone else find it confusing that the 3D phone is newer than the 4G? I have to keep reminding myself...

It's the people who want to download blu ray movies through their phones connection and large files that bog down the network that Sprint doesn't like. You use 30GB+ a month or more and you are certainly going to have some kind of attention. I only use around 4GB and that was with root access on my previous phone. Though I didn't have 4g to tether from on my Epic. I would have much rather used my home network. Saving money is great, but it really affects others so negatively that Sprint may take action at some point if people don't start thinking more about the greater good than their must have for the newest MKV movie from btjunkie. Though I could be wrong.
True this...exactly. regardless...we're still circumventing their hotspot service. Knowing how much my AT&T friends are truly shackled by the cap...I'd consider paying sprint for tethering again!

[Q] (Q) Root on the Pantech Breakout?

So I know I most likely have to wait awhile for the breakout to be rooted. I was just wondering if any of the developers on this site where actually looking at doing it as we speak? I have tried using other methods currently out there to see and no luck so far.
Just got mine. Looking to root too.
I have also tried many different root methods none of which have proved successful. I recently had to upgrade from a droid incredible.i also have the Asus transformer which is the financial reason I had to settle with the Pantech. With the upgrade I lost my free tethering ability, I am now back to the Incredible until I can figure out how to root the Pantech. If anybody has some knight please let me know thanks.
not sure if this will help but I posted the breakout system dump here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18211013#post18211013
I also found how to get into recovery by powerng off then holding power and the search button while powering on. However I am still unable to root. Maybe I am not understanding what the system dump is.
A system dump is when a dev gets the phone to copy the entire Android OS to the computer sort of like a dump truck dumping it's content into a hole you made (in layman's terms). This allows the devs unfettered and unrestricted access to the core of the phone's software components which they use to find a flaw in the system that allows the phone to be rooted. That's step one.
Step 2 is after the phone's OS has been rooted is to use that to gain access to the phone's boot loader and install a 3rd party recovery (like clockwork) that will show up when you press the power button + the search button. Right now you only get the stock Pantech bootloader area which does nothing unless you have the Pantech stock firmware and a special software verification key. You have neither.
Step 3 is then using the stock firmware dump to create custom, flashable ROM's which you can then flash using the 3rd party recovery software.
We're well into step one with the system dump. I'm gonna grab it and see what exactly they did to stop Gingerbreak.
Thanks for the information D.. I am going crazy I had just bought my Asus transformer so did not have enough money to buy the Bionic. Verizon initially told me i would be able to use the Pantech for unlimited tethering since I had a grandfathered plan now they told me it would be 30$ for 2gb a month. I am in desperate need to root the Breakout if anybody has any insight it would be much appreciated
[Q] How to root a pantech breakout
Is there a way to root a pantech breakout yet? I have tried superonclick, gingerbreak, and z4mod with no luck & I am running android os v 2.3.3 gingerbreaed.
Not yet, from what I've seen. And I'm with ya, tried all the current rooters. But looks like Google patched something in the 2.3.3 release that blocks the current methods. Hopefully someone will find something soon (wish I knew enough about programming). This is an awesome little phone, and with a little root and customization, will be amazing.

have you tried the wifi hotspot app on market? It works for the breakout and u don't neeed to signup for mobile hotspot.
I am unable to find any apps that support wifi tethering on the Breakout. I have tried many including barnacle, pdanet, and more all to no avail. The only way I am able to use the Breakout as a hotspot is by using the preinstalled verizon app. I am currently on an ulimited everything plan and have been given a month free tethering. however, I am being told that I have a 2gb monthly limit and will be charged for any overages even with the "free" month. It was my understanding that having an unlimited data/web plan that tethering would follow suite, guess not. If anybody can offer some advice it would be greatly appreciated.
getting my breakout tomorrow...hopefully someone figures out how to root this thing!
tethering app
I found the tethering app that works for the Pantech Breakout. It works as a widget instead of an actual app but it goes off your unlimited data plan and it doesnn't require root. It is called tethering widget by HI-DEVELOP XD
Is there any way to upgrade ma os version to 2.3 .......???

Would any developer be interested in rooting this crap (breakout) for some money?

People are saying that because it has a locked bootloader, but that hasn't stopped Devs on other phones, so I am holding out hope for our Pantechs!
it's pretty unrootable(at the moment)
i had my breakout since it was released and have tried various methods to root it.
I even bricked mine while trying a method i was pretty sure would unlock the bootloader.so (for now) it is not rootable.

[Q] Tethering possible w/o root?

I know this is a stupid question. But, I have to ask just in case there is something out there that I might not know about.
I also know by now that root after the OTA is not possible (I will not play with JTAG).
I still have the unlimited data plan, and I'd like to take advantage of it. If anyone knows of a software, paid or not, that will allow me to tether, hotspot, I'd greatly appreciate.
Thanks. :cyclops:
Its usb tether only (not WiFi) but easy tether doesn't require root....its a bit expensive but its what I use
Had to buy it awhile back when I was stuck s-on with my inc2
There's also PDAnet (tether only, not Wi-Fi)... I'm using it currently since my replacement phone came with the OTA and I'm stuck being a commoner lol

Clockwork Tether. USB only, cost $5 for unlimited use or has a few hundred MB daily limit. You will be breaking your TOS if you care about such things.

+1 on stuck being a commoner. lolllllllllll epic post. lol
I'm still lost on how my toyota is doing wireless tether on stock rom. It has to be a previously granted permission from verizon to toyota.
So, USB is the only way for now eh?
Ok. I guess that will have to do.
So, if I was to make it to a hotspot, I now have to connect to my laptop (via USB) and then make my laptop to ad hoc?
Hmmm... this would be problematic since my tablet does not do ad hoc, unless I root it also...
Any input would be appreciated.

FoxFi works great! They recently updated it to work on the OTA DNA and I use it everyday. There are caveats, you will have to use a passcode because of the certificate and I can't use a widget to turn it but both are acceptable to me. Let me know if you have any questions.
FoxFi seems to do the trick!

I was actually just coming in to let everyone know about this also! It seems like the free download working well, although the cap on the MB usage on the free one is very tiny - watch a YouTube for 15 min, you're capped.
It also seems like it really works the phone, the battery level drops very fast and the phone gets hot. I know i should expect this, but a bit too much to not wonder if it's not detrimental to the phone.

I don't know what this means. your Toyota connects to your phone via Bluetooth. Unless you are saying that you are surfing the web with your Toyota, please clarify.
Foxfi initializes the stock tethering app without root. It requires you to install a security certificate that requires you to have a lock screen password.

[Q] ROOTED and lost

:good: Hi XDA Community. First I want to say thank you to all the devs, programmers, technical people, and anyone that helps out with XDA. It's a real treasure for Android users. I am a noob pretty much regarding Android however I pick up fast. Recently I rooted my phone and it just isnt what I expected, I guess I imagined my device turning into a super-cellphone or something. Anyway I've picked up some rooted apps (Tuners, Titanium, etc) however I really don't know enough about Android to go around playing. I have a few questions maybe someone would take the time to answer. Thanks.
1. I play a social game on my phone and it has a really clumsy way of switching between accounts. I'd like to have two instances of the game instead of one, where each instance launches a different account. Is this possible?
2. Is there any widget or button where I could manually switch my processor from underclock to maximum power without delving into a program? Also a switch between max screen brightness and minimum screen brightness would be nice.
3. How can I find out more about Android and various apps services and processes? I can't sort through them to disable them if I dont know what they are. I would like to delete any bloatware from my carrier. I favor a very lite load on my phone that conserves battery because all I really do is make calls, text, and play few games at this moment.
4. Last one ... I have to pay $5 or $10 a month to enable 4g hotspot capability on my phone. Is there any difference between software that make the hotspot because I'm playing a FPS over wi-fi and sometimes I catch some crazy lag. I am using Samsung or MetroPCS version of hotspot software. Also now that I am rooted can I stop paying the $5 or $10 a month and still make a usable hotspot for my PS3 gaming?
Thanks so much for anyone willing to take the time to answer.

I may not be entirely correct, however I am doind my best to help:
1. I think this is possible with Android 4.2.2 onwards with the Users feature, however I cannot confirm this because I am on 4.1.2.
2. I think Voltage Control will work for this. Find it in Play Store.
3. This can be done, but the process is really hit and miss. Generally you shouldn't touch any package that has "com." at the start of its name. Also all Google apps. For the rest, all you need is common sense.
4. T-Mobile, as far as I know, has disabled free tethering on Samsung devices recently. However, I have also heard that your tethering will still work if you tether to other Android devices. Use a user-agent switcher plugin for your PC browser to mask your PC as an Android device if you are tethering to PC. You can also try FoxFi.
Other devs or users, if you are reading this, please confirm if what I have said is true.
I hope I helped

Thanks for setting me in the right direction aureljared. I feel stupid because I don't see a thank button but I will keep looking for it. I am also on 4.1.2 so if anyone knows of a way to do #1 with my version of Android please let me know. OK, I will check out Voltage Control. My phone is terrible on battery. If I am doing something for like 10 minutes I will drain like 10% battery! About number 3, how can you tell if something is an ad or snooper process coming from installing another app? #4 Yes T-Mobile and MetroPCS have disabled free tethering and charge us now for it. They are basically the same service. And I will check out FoxFi. Thanks alot!!
Also, if anyone needs help rooting Samsung Galaxy Exhibit (SGH599N) I know how to do it. Post here and I will help you.

Easiest way to Hotspot?

Hello,
I've just about pulled my hair out over this. What is the easiest way to get wifi tethering unlocked and unrestricted? I've tried hacks, mods, flashing ROMs with this mod baked in yet when i check my tethering usage it's still ticking upwards rapidly.
Please, can anyone help me with this? Thank you very much
Bump. Anyone?
I find that using pdanet+ to usb tether is the most effective way of data tethering at this point. Tmobile have really cracked down on unauthorized wifi tether, at least down here in TX. I'm constantly being throttled as soon as I turn on WiFi tether. User agent doesn't help either.
Sent from my SM-G900T using XDA Free mobile app
I use EasyTether+
The free version is pretty good, but restricts you from using https secured websites (like Gmail.com). For $10 you can get the full version; unfortunately it's only for PC, since the host is USB or Bluetooth only, and they only have a PC client.
I bought it with Play store credits via the Google Opinion Rewards app (so, for free), but it may be worth considering if you want to sidestep tethering restrictions and are linking with a PC. At least try the free version first to see if you like it; it seems to work for me pretty well, and doesn't make my phone get too hot.
Disclaimer: My GS5 is still in the mail (don't have it yet; just browsing the forums to get my bearings). My experience with EasyTether+ is on a LG G2, but it's still T-mobile so I doubt anything network-wise is different.
Bump, did you get the s5 yet? Does it work?
Anyone knows any fixes?
