[Q] APN issues on CM11 - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Looks like CM11 is having APN issues related to MMS after the 3/3 nightly build. I am unable to send MMS with the stock messenger. 8sms does send MMS but returns the error: "No APN specified on the device"
Has anyone found a work around for this?

Yeah my fix was to go back to a Samsung build. I'm tired of this crap.

You are experiencing what appears to be a rather widespread issue with the newly released AOSP roms. Apparantly there is an issue with SMS not sending for some users and MMS not sending for many users. I posted the following in the Pac-Rom thread in an attempt to aggregate the information I gathered in one location:
fujimoh said:
I posted previously that I was having an issue with SMS messages not sending. I can usually send one or two messages when I first boot up the phone, but after that the message just hangs on "SENDING..." and then gives an error that it was not sent. I posted this problem in the general troubleshooting section http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2672724 and received the following response: "Known Verizon issue. Call them or hang tight. This is not a rom issue. If you need texting until it's fixed go back to TW."
Additionally, many people with this problem seem to be located in the Central PA area, as is indicated in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2662658 and discussed on the Verizon Community Support forums. I am not located in PA but my area code is central PA since I never changed it when I moved.
I spoke with a Verizon rep via their Live Chat feature and the rep stated the following:
Verizon Rep: Interesting, ok thank you for that information [SMS not sending]. I checked with Sasmung [sic] and confirmed it's not a known issue but we definitely want your phone to work as it should.
Verizon Rep: Ok, I did see that report [issues with SMS in Central PA area] on the forum as well. With Samsung not reporting it all it means is it's not a widespread issue. Nonetheless, with you doing the reset already we'll want to look at replacing the unit.
I am not really interested in purchasing a new phone, so I politely declined that alternative. However it would appear that the Verizon network is working normally, and the responses show that this issue is isolated to AOSP roms as the above user stated they had no issue on a TW rom. The SMS/MMS issue is also discussed in the CM11 nighly thread, with people stating they are having similar problems. I am not really interested in flashing a TW rom and going through the set-up process just to flash back to PAC and redo the setup process once this issue is corrected. So, I'll just be monitoring this and other threads for a new nightlie or a fix.

I received this rather snarky reply from another user who claims to know what is going on.
DreamFX said:
It is a known Verizon network issue. There is people way above the front line staff working on it. They don't tell the front line staff this because since it's just limited to aosp and they only support stock, unrooted phones they tell people there is no issue. They could send you ten replacements phones and they all will do the same thing. It's not the phone, it's not the AOSP rom, and it's not your sim card. It's a bizzare issue that makes all aosp roms ever made not work in certain areas, mostly central pa but others as well. There is no need to post on multiple threads about an issue that you had already been given an answer for. It's being worked on. There is nothing the pac team can do for this. There is another xda user working directly with the engineers providing me updates. I will let you know when we find out a resolution.

It's likely not the answer your looking for, but hopefully it provides some insight for you into the issue and saves you time having to pour through search results. It appears that TW roms are not having any issues, so for now the 'fix' would appear to be using one of them.

I just use the 3-2-14 build myself. I have had a lot of problems from all of the other CM11 builds.

The 3/3 build still worked for me. Also 8SMS is a workaround for the APN issue for the time being.
I have considered going back to a TW rom in order to get MHL_or_ Miracast / Wi-Fi Direct working. These just don't seem to work in CM11.

I will definitely try some TW 4.4 ROM's. I don't know that I will try any until then. I definitely will not move off of this 3-2 build until this mess is fixed.

The latest nightly seems to have fixed the APN issue. No to wait for the Wi-Fi Direct and Miracast to get fixed.

New ROM Pluses and Minuses

OK now that we've had about a week to digest the new Sprint ROM, I thought I would compile my own list of what is good and what are some issues with the new ROM update. It's been a dizzying week trying to keep up with all the updates and issues. Honestly I'm doing this thread for myself so I can EASILY keep track of some the current issues/threads that are being discussed about the new ROM. But if people want to chime in, I'll certainly keep on updating this thread. (Again, this is just a list for reference and NOT a thread to discuss specific issues).
Carrier: Sprint
DCD 3.0.0 ROM
The Good:
1. GPS Functionality (no brainer). The update seems to be lock faster than the leaked ROM. There has been many success stories.
GPS FAQ: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=363431
2. EVDO Rev. A Speeds. It varies in your area but it seems like the majority are getting it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=376616
3. Some minor updates.
Some Issues (these are the ones I've been following)
1. Slow IE
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=376746
FIXED (Thanks Ranger 093 - See Post #2)
2. Some Battery Issues: (although my battery life seems about the same). There are quite a few threads on this one. Didn't really find one that encompasses everything or found any specific cause.
3. No Bluetooth DUN - (actually read about this on PPC geeks). ICS and WMWifiRouter seems to work OK.
Seems to be a solution but I haven't tried it yet:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=377525
4. Audio adapter Issues: Looks like there is a fix but it required modification of your adapter.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=376623
Check out Post #14 for a diagram
5. SMS problems - I don't use this but if someone wants to chime in I can update it.
6. No GPS lock after Mogul goes to sleep: No solution yet but keeping my eye on it.
7. WM5Storage not compatible with Mogul
Evidently there is a hacked fix for it. Haven't had time to test it out yet. (see post #19)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=376133
Overall, for me the advantages outweigh the disadvantages but I will still be following them closely, hoping that there will be fixes for all this issues.
Scratch the Slow IE I provided a file that fixes it off of the kaiser forums. Check the second page of this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=376746
The only bug I'm having is that some of my calls have no audio when I pick up. It takes a reboot to get audio back on incoming calls.

[Q] Android and Group MMS

Let me preface this post by saying that I've been dealing with and looking for a solution for this for about a year. Basically, ever since I moved from iOS to Android, and I've not found a suitable solution to it yet. I've searched this forum diligently, googled for it and really just found a bunch of nonsense posts and unanswered questions or suggestion to install handcent or sms go pro. I'll say up front that I don't really want to do that. I like to style and smoothness of the stock messaging app.
Now, to the issue. What I constantly have issues with, across multiple roms and Android versions, is the ability to handle group mms, specifically from group mms where iOS initiates the group mms (if that has anything to do with it or not, that's the observation) or an iOS person is in the reply. Basically what happens is either the group mms ends up having download issues, where the initial mms or replied mms from a user in the group doesn't download and gets stuck downloading and never completes. I've had these issues with gingerbread, ics and now jb as well as across cyanogenmod, aokp, aosp and now aocp roms. I've tried flashing several modems as well as updating my apn settings several times, according to this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1576199 The thing is, once I update my apn settings to that, I can send and receive mms message, picture and video just fine. It's only ever group mms that causes the issues.
None of them seem to work well with group mms, and I'm beginning to think this is just an android thing. Now I don't want to get into an iOS/Android thing here, but basically what I'm wanting is group mms capability to just work on Android. I don't want to have to deal with the downloading messages, messages not coming through, or having to sit there with the mms open for 5 minutes while it downloads and finally gets around to displaying it.
Are there just known issues with android and group mms? Is group mms just a thing that apple and at&t have some trickery with? (me not knowing anything about group mms other than it just works in iphones) I just want some kind of answer like, "no, it doesn't work well on Android phones and others are having the same issue." Or perhaps, "no, you're just crazy and doing something wrong because group mms works flawlessly on my sgs2." Either way would give me a sold answer!
Lastly, I will add that I have used go pro sms and it did seem to handle group mms much better. However, I prefer the look at feel of the stock app much better, hence why I prefaced this thread with that comment about not wanting to switch. I do realize that if there is a limitation of the stock app, I might be stuck, but to me go pro just feels clunky and cluttered. Thanks in advance for all the suggestions.
I feel the same way about go sms pro, it's clunky. What I've done for now is use a theme that's as close to stock holo as possible. Someday I'll get around to creating a theme that mimics the stock app. The popup notifications are pretty ugly to me in go sms pro, so I use "sms popup" for notifications - it uses the holo theme and is nice and slick.
Don't forget to set mms to auto-retrieve in the stock app. It does hang for sometimes, and sometimes may not download too. Also, the notification doesn't actually popup for mms messages, but it's there in the popup queue the next time I get a normal sms.
Kind of a convoluted setup and i wish it was just built in, but for its all we've got to deal with.
Sent from my SGH-I777
Thanks for the info. I might consider trying it again and seeing if there is a theme out that that looks nice, but from what I remember, all of the convoluted settings was another thing that put me off. I didn't like having to dig through settings to find a fix for something. Honestly, I'd just like the stock app to work, and I wasn't for sure if people were having my same experience or not, or if I was possibly doing something wrong. I'd appreciate some more opinions if possible.
I thought I'd post back here with a few results. I recently reinstalled Go Pro and tried it again. I still find the UI to be somewhat clunky but have used a theme that minimal and it's bearable. I have, however, had NO with mms messages since switching to it. It really has been pretty flawless. Furthermore, I upgraded to the newest version of AOKP which reset my APN settings. On the stock app, I'd always have to go back in and reset them to the ATT PHONE and ATT MMS settings per the thread I referenced earlier. I wouldn't be able to do anything with mms without settings that. Well, I didn't do that this time using Go Pro and I've had no issues with any mms messages. This just kind of confirms to me this has something to do with the stock messaging app, which is disappointing. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi guys,
This is Viber's rep.
@jettlee29 - It sounds like the typical Custom ROM issue - some custom ROMs alter the microphone definitions of your phone, causing Viber not to recognize the phone's microphone properly. That is the reason that Viber cannot transmit your sound to the other side. We discussed this issue in detail with our users in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25865775#post25865775
Please note that in that thread, a workaround was suggested *by a user* (and not officially by us) that seemed to have solved the problem for Galaxy S+S2 users.
Let us know if you have any issues.

the fixes in that other thread dont do anything unfortunately.

Please note that at this stage we don't officially support custom ROMs with Viber. Running Viber on a custom ROM results in various side effects (sometimes total lack of functionality), but we can't afford to support all custom ROMs out there
We are continuously working to adapt Viber to more and more ROMS, but meanwhile - you might want to contact the ROM developer for further support - they may be able to resolve this issue. In addition, it would be a good idea to test Viber on Stock ROM on that same phone, in order to see if that indeed is the source of the problem.
i am currently using a custom rom (padawan 8) and it works fine, worked fine on stock ATT rom too, just wanted it workin on CM10.1, i am going to try it on my nexus 7 to see if it works there on cm10.1 to see if its just note it wont work on
i figured since CM was one of the biggest if not biggest custom roms, viber would support it
appreciate your help anyways though!

As we said, from time to time we try to adapt to some ROMs, but unfortunately it is not a 'strict policy' and as a whole, we don't officially support ROMs
We will wait for news from your testings with the different ROMs, hopefully good news
yeah, same for me, tried all the fixes and different kernels but nothing seems to work.
Can't run 4.1.2 ROMS as they have so many issues but on 4.2.2 Viber just doesn't work.

Viber is an application for smart phones which gives an instant messaging platform to the users and is developed by Viber Media. Besides text messaging and images, it also allows users to exchange audio and video messages. It works on both Wi- Fi and 3G networks. It was initially launched only for IPhone in order to give competition to Skype. But now it is also available for Blackberry, Android, Symbian, Windows Phone and many other devices. Its functionality varies for different platforms with Android and iOS being the first to receive all the new features on other viber review
@adeelhayat90 -
Viber currently does not integrate with Android's native contact list unfortunately. In future versions we hope to bring back this feature, and once we have news we'll let you know.
We apologize for the temporary inconvenience.

Root Tether

I realize there are multiple threads on this. But unless I'm blind - which I may be - I can't find a final solution.
I can not tether on my rooted DNA. WiFi Tether does not work. I have tried multiple versions. I don't know if it makes a difference, but the MSSClamping option is not available. Even still, it won't start.
I've tried 1-Click - that says it requires a subscription.
I've tried FoxFi. That sets up some VPN tunnel then doesn't start.
Any leads for a successful solution?
I have several rooted Roms posted with native tethering enabled, since most 3rd party apps no longer work on kit Kat.
So, the best solution, which works, is to run a Rom with native tethering enabled for all users or modify the Rom you're running to do the same.

Thank you. Unfortunately I'm in an area cursed with the Verizon Trolling of custom ROMs. Anything other than Stock Root results in SMS sending issues.
I'm not a programmer by any stretch, but have been modifying phones for a while based on all of you wizards' work. Is modifying the current ROM a "simple" task?
A little research has shown there is an "entitlement hack" for other phones. Does that hack exist for the DNA?
Still searching...

Thanks a bunch. You may find a thread of mine buried deep on here somewhere about this problem back in Feb/March. I had just gotten my DNA and ended up with the issue of not being able to send. It became a general consensus that VZW was testing some sort of blacklisting of custom ROMs in certain areas. I've not heard of a solution yet. I've tried multiple ROMs, all with the same outcome.
I look forward to your thread and whatever brainstorming comes from it.
Thanks!

Has anyone tried calling 911 with custom ROM

This may be a silly question to ask but an important one. Awhile ago I called 911 and noticed it had a special display picture. This was on my stock android and I was curious what cyanogenmod would look like so I google searched it. By chance I found some articles claiming 911 does not work on some phones running CM. Can anyone confirm they have successfully called 911 using custom ROMs like CM?
Example complaint.
