My phone was a bit oily at the back glass and I decided to wash it with soap, can it be done?
Of course you can i did it multiple times.. But be aware though, that you don't apply it too much, just make it bubbly with your hand and scrub it with your hand. Plus be aware that oleophobic layer might get removed because of the soap.. But for the phone jtself, it will survive

I wouldn't take to your device with soap. Also salt is bad news too...
The membrane is semi-permeable. Meaning there are microscopic holes in the water proof covering. soap and salt will make the holes larger, meaning water will get through.
yup, as per their site, the IP certification is valid only for fresh water submersion!
just be careful and you can try some lens cleaning solutions too

Unfortunately lately some scuffs have started to show up on my i777's screen. They look like scuffs from my pant pockets. I've tried micro fiber cloths with just a little bit of water with no luck. Any ideas? I'm a bit bummed at the moment.

Before long time when we used CDs and when it was having a lot scratches he used wool and tooth paste polishing it 10-15min and no problem after that..
If you are sure that you want to try this method on cellphone. If you don't believe me try with CD first
You could try plastic polish, it can be found easily in any car parts store. You apply it with a micro fiber and remove it the same way just like wax. Its not too abrasive since its meant for plastic gauges and such.. should help.
I've heard of the toothpaste and wool trick, but I'm never sure if someone is just trolling to get me to smear toothpaste on my phone. Does it matter what kind of toothpaste? Gel? Classic paste? Mint?

Well a CD surface and phone screen are different surfaces aren't they? Don't know if I'd use the same technique but that's just me..
I'll try to find some plastic polish. I'm in Spain for the next two months so it may be difficult.

Seriously. There's no way that a pants pocket should be scratching/scuffing that screen absent some other contributing factor (keys, coins, etc.).
I've had this phone for less than a month, and I keep it in a case/holster, but my prior phone also had Gorilla Glass and endured two years of pants pocket indignities thrown at it, with nary a scratch.

So it is gorilla glass? 2 people at att told me Its a hardened type plastic screen. My phone too has a faint scratch that I can't remove but it wasnt just from jeans like you mentioned.

It is gorilla glass. Sand generally with scratch it easy, but otherwise its really good. I have had mine since October, never a case or screen protector. I have one small 1/4" scratch.
The problem I am seeing is that it seems I have worn off the oliophobic coating in an area about 1" square. I always use my phone one handed with my thumb. You can basically see the vertical and horizontal path I swipe, if I get any oil on the screen, like from food.

I've used tooth paste to remove scratches from cds. it has polishers in it for your teeth. i wouldnt use steel wool though. use the softest cotton shirt.

Some toothpaste brands are more abrasive than others... In the Army, we used regular Crest to polish our bits of brass, because it is abrasive. (I guess gel-types would not be as much, but that might be a good thing for glass...)
You will also want to be careful of rubbing off the anti fingerprint coating (actually you will have to), but only do it in the area of the scratch. don't go crazy all over the phone.
Glass = much harder than the calcite abrasives in toothpaste, plastic polish etc.
You'll have to use a zirc, diamond, or aluminium oxide/silicate polish like those used for polishing hard metals. And not only would you rub off any coatings, but the screen is already very thin and polishing it will make it thinner and weaker...

I may be getting the N3 Dev Edition and I have a Mime USA tempered glass screen protector on my current Note 3 and I was just wondering if I could remove it and put in on my new note without any loss of quality or bubbles. Has anyone done this?

Sounds plausible. Just gotta make sure you're in a dust free area. Some people suggest going into the bathroom and running the shower. Their theory is that the steam will stick to the dust and cause the dust to be too heavy to float in the air. I found a razor blade to be the best tool to remove a screen protector.
I think its risky if you exposed your phone in a steam. Im using a needle in removing or sticking a film. Its useful that it can easily remove a tiny speck of dust that your film caught while applying.

Steam won't damage it, humidity levels here for example in Qatar reach the high 80's or more, you literally have drops of water forming on the phone, it's manufactured to operate at that range.
Direct water jets exposure or submersion is the problem.
I was cleaning my phone (weekly cleaning routine) and I swept my camera lens with a microfiber cloth. Guess what? I scratched it! AFAIK it doesn't impact the pictures taken, but It's annoying as ****.

my verizon version did the same thing lol i mustve had a rough piece of dust on that cloth or something. ridiculous.
There's a thread on this.
Weird. I wipe mine off with my t-shirts all the time and and I don't have any scratches at all.

also no issues here

Have a couple micro scratches here. All chance icro what type of dust particles was there. Sapphire lens sure, non bonded ar coating on top... defeats the former purpose a bit imo...
Has every one here remembered to take off the plastic film around the camera, over the volume buttons, and the lense?
I don't have a single visable scratch on mine. It's the Verizon model, been kept in my pants pocket, and I've cleaned the lense with my shirt and still no scratches.

Same here. I use my clothes and a microfiber cloth to clean mine and no scratches at all. If you have the plastic still, that will easily get scratched.
Same here verizon model always in pants it is in a tpu case but other then that never had issue yet

I'm sorry I was widely misunderstood here. There was absolutely no issue till I intentionally wiped my camera. It's so hard to see, actually so hard that if the light isn't right, you can't see it. But when it's in the rifhr light angle, it appears as a green or violet line. It's extremely thin and it doesn't bother my OCD. And yes, the protective cover is removed. but it's annoying as duck that you mess **** up when cleaning the phone. If I was tossing it around and sitting on it, I would understand

Thanks for the alert.
I think we should just use the same precaution as cleaning DSLR camera lens.
Make sure we dust off any dirt or foreign particle before wiping.
Any silicon particle on the surface will be abrasive, even for sapphire.
Good day guys.
I just wash my XZU screen, put some soap and rinse it. After drying it with towel I notice some dark shade in the upper part of my screen and I knew it was water inside my screen After I noticed it i put my phone inside a sealable plastic then put some desiccant silica gel bag inside.. I notice that the darker part (lower part of the screen) was shrinking but very slow, while the upper did not change. :crying:
As of now, it is 9 hours there inside the bag.. WIll it remove the water??? And how long should I it take? BTW the screen is working , the phone was turned off and flaps are close. :crying: Any suggestions???

unfortunately water got inside the phone, more precisely inside the lcd module, between 2 of the polarizing films beneath the actual lcd panel. once there it will dry up over time (maybe a week or more) but in most cases it will still leave some marks - spots or gray dots because of the fact that plain water contains impurities that get stuck between the polarizing films and cannot be removed.
the shatter prof film is applied over the digitizer module, therefore over the entire lcd module, removing it won't have any effect in solving this.
back when i was servicing cell phones, the only way to fix this was to disassemble the phone, remove the lcd module, disassemble it and manually clean the polarizing films/light diffusers. it can't be done for all phones and some of them have fused screen assemblies that cannot be opened.
in any case, there is only a small chance (let's say 10%) that the water will dry out and not leave any contaminants inside the lcd module. however some sort of improvement could be seen over time, even if, most probably, the screen won't recover to it's initial performance.
interesting however... why water got inside a phone advertised as practically waterproof? were all flaps closed? any marks on the water damage stickers under the flaps?

I really don't know the exact reason why it got inside but im guessing it enters from the top speaker. And yes all my flaps are close, and no traces of water inside the flaps, sticker is still white.
I was really dissapointed actually, i didn't even submerge it on water! i was just WASHING my screen.
Anyways, water inside was all dried up, but i notice my screen got darker just a little bit. Good things was, it was the entire screen got darken. So no spots...

Never use soap on a waterproof phone as it usually eats through the membrane that prevents water from going through the speaker/microphone.
They even tell you not to use soap or any other chemicals in the user manual.
IP58 certification is supposed to be valid for Fresh water, not water laced with other products (not even salt water in fact), it also does not protect your phone against mid to high pressure jets of water (such as the one going straight from your tap). Next time you will be more careful when handling a waterproof device I hope.
Hi guys,
I think rain x is for glass, but will it be okay to apply it on xperia z ultra anti shatter film?
I don't want to remove the film as i like the sony logo and added protection.
I just want to apply on the front.
Thanks a lot!
if u decide to go with "rain x" or whatever that is...sound like a stereotype american brand...anyway u might want to get a bottle of rain x for plastic instead if you wont remove the asf

How do you find the front ASF on z Ultra? How does it handle fingerprints? In summer my hands are really sweaty.

The asf scratch easily, the oliofobic wore off in like three months and at about 2/3 down the screen there was a horizontal dull and almost har d to see through line where my fingers had been swiping in many apps. So I took it off about a year ago.
Without its a nightmare. Its completely dull. There is no finish to the glass due to that the asf needed the rough surface to bond to. I have been using Gtechnic kit and it does very well. Its a product most used in sports cars and airplanes but it can be used to anything you like as long as it sticks to the surface.
..But not enough. Probably the best solution would be to have proper buffing equipment and buff the surface until its smooth as crystal glass.
Anyhow I tried a set off those hardened glass protector and thats what im using at the moment. The phone is now two years old so I dont really care much about it. If it dents it dents, if the glass cracks it cracks. Im not spending money on it any longer.

Edit: Oh yeah I forgot to mention the mocolo glass panels also add a bit of ...or very much to make the phone much more rigid! The z ultra is very easy to bend in half but with them mounted its much much more rigid and harder to bend. It feels more like a premium device.

its a common question. As I understand the touch sensitivity is not an issue when applying screen protector onto the asf. So you should be fine.
And Yes typicly rainx should work. But the oleophobic wont wear of the glass screen protector.. not what I have noticed at least.
