Hello!
Do you guys Ubuntu for Android project will be forgotten and left behind? Because it seems like one of the best concepts EVER
I'm talking about this:

Ubuntu Phone/Touch does currently not support X11, which excludes most Ubuntu desktop applications. Not sure, what the future plans for supporting desktop on an attached screen are though.
Currently it is optimized for phones, tablets are next. The desktop support is probably a little further down the road.

yeah it does.. but it still doesn't support android apps that can be used on Unity GUI on external screen
I hope they will focus ob the important things. I Tried to use ubuntu with the complete Linux installer but everytime i get a grey screen with an x as the mouse pointer and everything i tried dont work. Xstartup file and so on. I really like to use my phone as a desktop replacement but this will take ages... Phones are getting stronger & stronger and all we geht are these phone OS... My current laptop is a single core 1.6 GHz asus eeepc. I could clock my phone to 1.6 GHz and it has 4 cores. Unleash the power for a full experience devs!!!
i9300 / Cyanogenmod 10.2 stabile / boeffla 2.1
I don't think they support Ubuntu for Android anymore.
They focus on bringing Ubuntu to smartphones though. I've been running it as my main OS on my phone for almost two months now and I love it.
Canonical plans to start developing Unity 8 for the desktop after the release of Ubuntu 14.04 in April. According to a video by Canonical, they hope to add basic desktop support this year.
As soon as they get Unity 8 running on the desktop, it shouldn't be that difficult to offer the desktop mode on phones when you connect them to a bigger screen.
So I'm eagerly waiting for that.
The Linux on android project is currently working on something almost just like Ubuntu for android. They think canonical dropped the ball and had a crowdsource campaign to fund hiring full time devs for it.
Direct frame buffer access is coming among other awesome stuff.
I'm a new user so I had to add spaces to the link
http ://linuxonandroid. org/indiegogo-campaign-time-to-build-convergence/
I would love to see it finished. It would save me dev time xD

Hello.
Can Ubuntu be used in Moto G ?
Why so late?
Sadly, Cannonical failed to meet their 32 milion $ goal with Ubuntu Edge crowdfunding campaign, but it seems that 2014 will be the year of Ubuntu Touch, the first fully functional OS release, but again, why so late?

Why so late? It was never late. There's a lot of work that Cannonical has on their shoulders. Honestly, this year is going to boom for Android. So much has jumped out in the few months, it's crazy!

Very good news for both OSes : CM dev would be faster with sources and webOS might be improved by community knowledge.
Happier and much more having bought a TP
I was thinking of getting rid of my touchpad since android progress was slow and there are so many nicer tablets coming out. But now guess I will wait a little longer.
I really would love to see WebOS take off. I like it better then Android in some ways. It would be cool if Android apps could run on webOS. Now maybe it could happen.
Why not

That's what I do not understand.
IPhone, Android, and WebOS are all Linux.
Why aren't all the apps interchangeable?
What is really different about an IPK or an APK?

Yes, Android, iOS, and WebOS are all based on Linux kernels. The difference between them is that each has a different "framework" to access the kernel features. The "framework" is basically an API (Application Programming Interface) that interacts with the Linux kernel that is basically controlling the hardware.
Hence, an application that emulates one OS while running another is simply doing a translation from a program written for a particular API into the native OS API. The problems with emulators are of course, first and formost performance, and second it may not be possible to translate all actions from one API to the other.
I remember the days when the argument for Linux was that it is portable from platform to platform... just recompile and off you go.
just because they are releasing the source for webos does not mean they are releasing any touchpad specific source. Our version of webos may never be open sourced. it's a possibility.
Good news for the Friends of the latest ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime, because from March will be a UMTS version hit the market, which is also equipped with a more powerful GPS module. It is the only direction to go, unless they release a prime with a x86 processor. Its not a choice but a fact of life.

Ill be honest. I don't understand the hype. Windows 8 for ARM is not compatible with the x86 varient so no apps will work unless it is specifically ported to work on the arm processor. Beyond that what is Microsoft bringing to te table that Android doesn't have? Office?

Compiling your x86 project to support ARM in Visual Studio will be VERY easy. Devs who care to support tablets can do so with almost no effort. It's a pretty big deal.

This is what I have heard as well. Legacy software won't work out the gate, but going forward it shouldn't be too hard for devs to make software work on both.
Obviously if this is the case, windows 8 will quickly become very hard to ignore in the tablet arena. Hell even if they get fully functioning office software on it (which hopefully will be one of the first things they port in), that alone will be a huge incentive for many people to switch.
I guess we all forgot about the switch apple made from ibm to intel!

It depends on the person and what they are looking for.
Your question can be applied to any piece of technology that has ever been made(or will be) since there will always be a "latest and greatest" product coming around the corner in 3 months.....6 months...9 months...etc.....especially in the tablet arena.
If a person held out for the next greatest thing they would never own want they desire.

I imagine someone could MAYBE...edit that requirement? If it was a simple enough check and installation, but it takes that much for the system itself, then nevermind. I imagine, however, that someone will get it working with a simple browser and some office apps (so a stripped version that might boot?).

You misunderstood Ubuntu isn't trying to say that you need at least 32gb of storage to install ubuntu. The future high-end ubuntu pre-installed phones will be at provide at least 32gb and the entry-level ubuntu pre-installed phones will be at least 4-8gb.
As you can see it says "Operator and OEM partners"
And If you read the rest of the page you'll see those informations are for manufacturers and operators.
And no operation system except windows has such thing(there may be an another one, but who cares). Mac OS 10.7 is same on every mac. AOSP 4.1 is same on every android. iOS 6 is almost same on every supported device except Apple's marketing cuts

Thank you SO much for clearing that up, I was beginning to get anxious with thoughts like "my Nexus 4 is already so obsolete that it can't run a recently made mobile OS?!" which really troubled me and I'd love to see Ubuntu Mobile on the Nexus 4 - after all Galaxy Nexus users can't have ALL the fun
For the record, I wasn't saying that Ubuntu couldn't be installed on the Nexus 4. The way I had read it, there were two editions of Ubuntu Mobile: one with desktop docking mode and one without, the former having steeper system requirements. I was saying that Ubuntu could still be installed on the Nexus 4, but only with the edition that lacked desktop docking mode.
Hopefully leventccc is correct and those are guidelines for what future phones will have, rather than the minimum system requirements of the OS. That's probably right, considering Ubuntu on the PC only needs 5GB of storage.
Do you think we'll be able to easily dual boot JB/Ubuntu or will we have to pick one over the other. I could live with 8gb Android / 8gb Ubuntu partitions. However if Ubuntu requires too much space that'd be a tight squeeze.

If my nexus 7 can do it with ubuntu (not even mobile), n4 can do it too.
Here
Even though the "Nexus" thing is a huge point, my gut says that we MIGHT not get Ubuntu unlike G-Nex. Ubuntu might have been working on this before the Nexus 4 would have launched and so used the Galaxy Nexus as it would be cheap + open. Now that the Nexus 4 is out but as hard as hell to get it and then make the OS work on it from scratch would be pretty hard. Thus I fell we might not get it. But I hope that this is wrong.
Well one day to go before the major Ubuntu announcements at CES.

There will most definately not be an official image for the Nexus 4 in the coming months. Why should Cannonical waste resources on porting Ubuntu OS to other phones when the OS isn't even feature complete. They want to get an image out so people can start testing and develop apps for it. The Galaxy Nexus is dirt cheap, most developers have a GNexus anyway. So if they do that, they reached their goal.
It's not like they are trying to gain market share by getting the 2% of Android Users who root their phones to install Ubuntu Phone OS on their device. They won't come very far this way. The main path to the market is through handset manufactures and Ubuntu Phones in stores.
The image you will get for you Nexus 4 at some point will be community driven.

Face it the vast majority of smartphone users are NOT geeks. The average user wants Facebook, WhatsApp and [insert popular Android Game here]. You'd be surprised how many smartphone users don't even know what Android is. They think they are buying "A Droid" like it is a piece of hardware. The "warrenty issue" will put most people off and given that they don't really benefit from having a rooted phone they simply will not do it. The people on XDA aren' t by any strech of the imagination remotely representative of the normal Android user.
There are only 3.7 million installs of Cyanogenmod (http://stats.cyanogenmod.com/) and the DAILY activation rate of Android phones is somewhere between 700.000 and 900.000
http://www.informationweek.com/mobi...id-reaches-900000-daily-activations/240001809 based on that you can estimate that there are over 250 million devices being used right now. http://www.asymco.com/2011/12/21/how-many-android-phones-have-been-activated/
Now let's just double or even triple the number of installations of the most popular android rom by far to account of other rooted Android devices and put that in perspective... Still think it' s going to be some two digit number?

CyanogenMod is the most popular rom by far.
Compare the number of downloads of CM to any other ROM.
http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager
There isn't any other ROM that has downloads that are in the millions.
MIUI and AOKP are doing OK but the rest is just not worth mentioning.
Not even on the PC, where it is much easier and pretty much riskfree, people bother to change their OS.
Otherwise the Linux Desktop marketshare wouldn't be about 2-5%.
The average consumer simply uses what he gets from the store.

As you can read on the previous link, Ubuntu Phablet is available for all the recent Nexus family: Nexus 4, 7 and 10, and the older Galaxy Nexus.
I have a TF201 anda recently bought Nexus 4... Test in on the Nexus 4 would be straight forward, but I want to see it running on my tablet. This weekend I will look at the source code of their tools for installing the image to the device (https://code.launchpad.net/~phablet-team/phablet-tools/trunk) and try to figure how to adapt it (if can be done) to the TF201...
Hope that other people overtakes me
EDIT: I take a minute for reading the phablet-tools scripts, and I foud that the images are flashed with adb/fastboot. The binary image files are retrieved from that URI: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-touch-preview/quantal/mwc-demo/
It looks like there are somewhere a Jenkins building the images, but I was unable to found it (maybe there is in a private network, I don't know).
I have Ubuntu installed on the prime according to this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=38106548#post38106548
Still some bugs, but the OS is really good
So it looks like if the device has CM10.1 (the Prime does) it's rather simple to port over. I can't wait to see it ported over. It'll probably only take a week or two with the current devs we have working on the Prime.

I know some of you come straight to the forums and miss some of the news items from the main site. But here is an article decribing the procedure to port Ubuntu Touch. http://www.xda-developers.com/android/porting-ubuntu-touch-is-as-simple-as-building-cm/
It doesn't appear to be a daily driver yet, in fact that demo video people are drooling over was a concept video. The icons are just PNG's. Essentially Ubuntu Touch is a fork of CM10.1 and since there are only a handful of unofficial CM ports and kangs to the tf201 I believe it will be a bit longer before we see the Ubuntu touch on the Prime. Surely and official CM10.1 port will come first.

There is already a port for tf101, tf700t and tf300t. This is the ubuntu page of the devices people are working on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Devices. Hopefully, someone will work on the Prime soon.

I've been trying to get it to boot today but no luck so far. I decided to start over because it looked like I was missing some libs but supposedly I was synced up to date. Will see what happens tomorrow. I was hoping someone else would have had this going by now.
edit: I was right, I hadn't let it get all the projects through bootstrap. having another go at it now.

I tried to get it running last week. Surfaceflinger kept segfaulting even though I used the same instructions as the TF300 and TF700. I kind of said "meh" and went back to my cm-10.1 since Ubuntu Touch isn't really ready for mass consumption quite yet. (Although this should change before December)
Maybe I'll give it another crack when I get a look at the new TF300 4.2 stock files. (I want to merge in the new kernel and see if there's any new nvidia blobs to play with.)

@Thisu - I think what Codeweavers is doing is pretty cool and look forward to trying out their Technology Preview of Crossover for Android when it's available to try.

Congratz!!
While I admire the idea, we got WineHQ already and it installs program like normal windows one.
In comparison, crossover opens a windows window -so u got like a system in a system in a window where one can install stuff.
So isn't it better to use WineHQ instead lol...
Is this project even active? Will play around with it alongside with WineHQ on my Remix OS.
