very interesting, it will be released for the nexus 10 and 7 Thursday. I think Ubuntu looks extraordinary on a tablet. Only time will tell
I would love to have Ubuntu on my Prime!
Really hope it will be possible, if not I will consider another tablet!

I like the Ubuntu tablet UI, but wondering about minimum (preferred) memory capacity. On Ubuntu site they have 2GB and supports only 4 fingers. That really scares me

Indeed and it needs a Dual-core Cortex A15 too
http://www.ubuntu.com/devices/tablet/partner
Well it runs on the Nexus 7. Those requirements are for partners and because it probably won't be released before next year those needs to be hinges so it ain't released on elderly hardware.
well i was excited to see if we could hack it on to the prime but i bricked my tonight...
Is there any tablets with 4 GB Ram ?

Not yet. I think they are looking at specs for 2014-ish.
I can't wait to see if people manage to get Ubuntu Touch running on the Prime, I'd love to have it, looks so good. I'd definitely use my Prime a lot more regularly than I do at the moment
The prime out specs the nexus doesn't it? So it should be able to run Ubuntu touch provided someone ports it.

As far as I know, the Nexus 7 doesn't run Ubuntu touch, does it ? The tablet on their website is the Nexus 10.

As you can read on the previous link, Ubuntu Phablet is available for all the recent Nexus family: Nexus 4, 7 and 10, and the older Galaxy Nexus.
I have a TF201 anda recently bought Nexus 4... Test in on the Nexus 4 would be straight forward, but I want to see it running on my tablet. This weekend I will look at the source code of their tools for installing the image to the device (https://code.launchpad.net/~phablet-team/phablet-tools/trunk) and try to figure how to adapt it (if can be done) to the TF201...
Hope that other people overtakes me
EDIT: I take a minute for reading the phablet-tools scripts, and I foud that the images are flashed with adb/fastboot. The binary image files are retrieved from that URI: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-touch-preview/quantal/mwc-demo/
It looks like there are somewhere a Jenkins building the images, but I was unable to found it (maybe there is in a private network, I don't know).
I have Ubuntu installed on the prime according to this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=38106548#post38106548
Still some bugs, but the OS is really good
So it looks like if the device has CM10.1 (the Prime does) it's rather simple to port over. I can't wait to see it ported over. It'll probably only take a week or two with the current devs we have working on the Prime.
building Ubuntu
I know some of you come straight to the forums and miss some of the news items from the main site. But here is an article decribing the procedure to port Ubuntu Touch. http://www.xda-developers.com/android/porting-ubuntu-touch-is-as-simple-as-building-cm/
It doesn't appear to be a daily driver yet, in fact that demo video people are drooling over was a concept video. The icons are just PNG's. Essentially Ubuntu Touch is a fork of CM10.1 and since there are only a handful of unofficial CM ports and kangs to the tf201 I believe it will be a bit longer before we see the Ubuntu touch on the Prime. Surely and official CM10.1 port will come first.

There is already a port for tf101, tf700t and tf300t. This is the ubuntu page of the devices people are working on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Devices. Hopefully, someone will work on the Prime soon.

I've been trying to get it to boot today but no luck so far. I decided to start over because it looked like I was missing some libs but supposedly I was synced up to date. Will see what happens tomorrow. I was hoping someone else would have had this going by now.
edit: I was right, I hadn't let it get all the projects through bootstrap. having another go at it now.

I tried to get it running last week. Surfaceflinger kept segfaulting even though I used the same instructions as the TF300 and TF700. I kind of said "meh" and went back to my cm-10.1 since Ubuntu Touch isn't really ready for mass consumption quite yet. (Although this should change before December)
Maybe I'll give it another crack when I get a look at the new TF300 4.2 stock files. (I want to merge in the new kernel and see if there's any new nvidia blobs to play with.)

Would have been awesome if it was android. I was told that HP Touch pad II was in dev but was just dropped this week which WAS going to be ANdroid. It was going to be a much thinner version like iPad2.

This may make no sense to you but the prototype was just tested and dropped project.
WebOS is a perfectly ****ty OS imo. My friend in R&D told me about the KNOWN memory leak in the webOS browser and causes system instability and the scroll issue. Also how the kernel for the Touchpad does not function properly with Dual-cores but was still released.....
There are MANY bugs with this product. There is also a 7" version of the HP Touchpad I have here that was never released.

Completely useless info but R&D dept at HP is missing two Touchpad II tablets recently with Android build on them.... They were prototypes. Project recently canned.
Why would they consider anandroid tablet? Simple, webos was a complete and total failure they wasted over a billion dollars on. I'm not making a statement about the quality of the software. I'm personally less than impressed with it but that's not the point. Lets just assume its the most amazing OS ever made and makes both iOS and Android look like a Commodore Vic 20 in comparison. Honestly, its all opinion. Lets stick to facts. Best Buy ordered hundreds of thousands. They sold around 20,000 before the firesale. The facts are no one bought them and no one developed for them. With no apps,no userbase and a warehouse full of product,it was looking pretty grim. Maybe they could have made a go of it but more likely it wouldn't have been life support for a few years and then finally put out of its misery.
If HP still wants to be in the tablet market,Android would not be a bad way to go. In fact, dropping webos and releasing android for the touchpad would not have been too bad of idea rather than the firesale.

Good news for the Friends of the latest ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime, because from March will be a UMTS version hit the market, which is also equipped with a more powerful GPS module. ASUS is responding to the continuing complaints relating to the relatively weak performance of the receiver currently installed GPS.

It is the only direction to go, unless they release a prime with a x86 processor. Its not a choice but a fact of life.

Ill be honest. I don't understand the hype. Windows 8 for ARM is not compatible with the x86 varient so no apps will work unless it is specifically ported to work on the arm processor. Beyond that what is Microsoft bringing to te table that Android doesn't have? Office?

Compiling your x86 project to support ARM in Visual Studio will be VERY easy. Devs who care to support tablets can do so with almost no effort. It's a pretty big deal.

This is what I have heard as well. Legacy software won't work out the gate, but going forward it shouldn't be too hard for devs to make software work on both.
Obviously if this is the case, windows 8 will quickly become very hard to ignore in the tablet arena. Hell even if they get fully functioning office software on it (which hopefully will be one of the first things they port in), that alone will be a huge incentive for many people to switch.
I guess we all forgot about the switch apple made from ibm to intel!

It depends on the person and what they are looking for.
Your question can be applied to any piece of technology that has ever been made(or will be) since there will always be a "latest and greatest" product coming around the corner in 3 months.....6 months...9 months...etc.....especially in the tablet arena.
If a person held out for the next greatest thing they would never own want they desire.

When the transformer prime was first announced i thought it was a good time for me to come back to android as i was in the market for a laptop and i had just got a windows phone replacing me evo (moved out of sprint). And for $500 i can get a quad core laptop / tablet combo. Sounded like a sweet deal.
I am a web developer and i would of loved to be able to work on my websites on the road, or when ever iam away from my pc.
When i first got the prime it was the best thing since slice bread to me but after about a month reality hit yet again that even though it is a quad core, it has a keyboard dock, it. is. still. android.
Force close, lock up, force close. It is pretty much way too unstable to even attempt to code on. I've thought about rom-ing but nothing really has enticed me yet as all of them seem to have some kind of major issue (keyboard dock or what have you)
I've bought splashtop thd and this has been a great alternative, but there is always wifi issues if not with my home (or away) wifi or one of the devices acting up.
Will there ever been hope for possibly a windows 8 (i understand the serial numbers / illegal issues with it), ubuntu (or any linux distro), or even a chrome os on this thing?
or should i (i really love the primes form factor and cant find anything else like it) sell it and try and buy something like a zenbook?
too unstable to code..lol tell that to the several developers already making great things for prime. maybe you meed to be on latest release or flash a custom rom if you feel stock is sketchy. I'm on stock n had prime since 12/22 n been running great. overclocked to 1.6Ghz also.
as far as dual boot, eventually it'll come. we already have different versions or Linux you can put on Prime. plus several people using the prime to code and develop for the device itself. check out the development thread for ideas or to get a scoop of what's already possible n coming on the prime.

Sorry demandarin, but you have no idea what you are talking about here custom roms aren't "made" on the device itself
At OP: windows 8 is more unlikely just because of the legal issues and xda's point of view concerning this.
Linux is just a matter of time though.
I think microshits have confirmed win8 will be pretty much locked down to windows phones dont stop some people though. there is work being done on dual boot, cant remember what post i saw though (i read a lot) though there is some good work being done with Linux where they run alongside each other, so you get andriod apps within the linux client. Then through linux running powerpoint. All pretty cool stuff, fairly sure we will be turning our primes into something amazing one day. Not that they aren't all ready cool (when you get a working one.)
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using XDA Premium App
Prime has been more than stable enough for my development needs, give or take the crud WiFi where I work. What is lacking is tools for debugging web pages.
rom's aren't as unstable as you make them out to be.
windows 8 will be locked down and even if it is cracked, there are a slew of challenges following that. You're better off waiting for a windows 8 tablet.
Linux looks more promising - there are already dual boots for ubuntu on the tf101, it could use a lot of work but it's making progress.
Well for me the Nexus 7 is just too small on the storage and lack of connectivity through HDMI and micro SD so I am probably gonna stick with the Prime which has served me pretty well. Since ASUS made the Nexus 7, is it likely we will see them release JB on the rest of their android lineup?
As the hardware seems to be fairly identical this should be no problem...
I believe it has a mhl port though so there is hdmi
Well I guess, I really just wish though it had a micro SD card and some more storage.
I'm pretty sure it will. I mean... come on, it debuted just six months ago in the US, even later in Europe... And no updates already? It would be crazy.
Since the Nexus 7 is also a Tegra 3 and they had the chance to work with JellyBean for a while now I would expect an update not to far away.
I'm just curious if the UI of the Nexus 7 is a new tablet UI of JB or they just did it to push the Store a bit more into the front on the Nexus 7.

Yes, it seems a little interesting that they used the phone sort of Android 4 for the 7" tablet. Most 7" tablets I know of use the tablet version of the OS.

Of course they will. The TF101 got ICS after... a year or so?
They would be CRAZY to dump the 201.
I think they will
I think they will release Jellybean for the Prime and the reason is simple, they seem to not want to dedicate too much time to fix the issues on Prime with ICS, and maybe the experience is smoother with Jellybean, and since hey are already developping for Jellybean it will be more cost effective to work on one OS since the Nexus have about the same hardware as Prime.
i think they will, but im really doubting if asus is ever gonna be able to fix issues with prime

Thought about the same. And I bet we are going to get JB before all other Android devices besides Nexus series.
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using xda premium
The Prime will get JB at some point. The real question is whether it will be perform any better than the Prime performs w/ ICS. I doubt it, considering how incompetent Asus has proved to be.
the ICS issues are fixed with androwook
Simple answer - hell yes
Even if not from Asus, which I bet they will, from the dev community for sure. No doubt in my mind.
If I were Asus, I would just bail out on any more ICS efforts... what's the point now that JB is available throw your resources at that and forget ICS for the TF201.
Yes it will come to prime and probably to tf101 too.
Asus actually mentioned this some months ago , they want to be the first again. unfortunally i cant remember where.
Since we have almost the same hardware it will be piece of cake for asus to get it to the prime.
Hopefully a better base!
Didn't had much problems with my prime so far.
We also shouldn't forget that the Google Staff is using the Prime as well for their weekly App & Game review shows. As far as I've read the Nexus 7 doesn't support MHL adapter for HDMI out so they might stay with the Prime for their show and I doubt they want so use old ICS
So far I'm happy with the updates ASUS is giving us. Sure, I had the screen flickering issue for a long time and it took them a while, but at least they give us updates and try to fix the problems which not many companies in the current tablet market do.

Well, if the current problems are related to software, as in ASUS can't get ICS to work properly on the hardware (T3 SoC), there is now a very good working copy of JB on the same hardware.
One would think it would be far easier for ASUS to take that software, add some ASUS stuff but leave the inner workings the same (and working properly).

i think they will, but im really doubting if asus is ever gonna be able to fix issues with prime

Yeah.. It's weird because even that i have a few issues with my Prime i will still say it's the best product i ever touched!
Biggest issue is that sometimes my keyboard dock wont work.. I have to use the tablet without the dock for like 5-10 min. and then connect it to the dock again to get it working

Saying that the Nexus 7 has about the same hardware is not that true, the processor, for example, is not the same : our prime has a T30 the nexus a T30L with lower CPU and GPU clock and problably a slower RAM (DDR2) ... http://www.anandtech.com/show/6054/google-nexus-7-mini-review
Whatever the hardware are similar, the prime is not just a 10 inch Nexus 7 : there is a dock, microSD/SD and USB port and probably more we don't know ....
Since our Tegra 3 is better than the nexus 7 one, I think JellyBean will be amazing in our Prime
Hello!
Do you guys Ubuntu for Android project will be forgotten and left behind? Because it seems like one of the best concepts EVER

Ubuntu Phone/Touch does currently not support X11, which excludes most Ubuntu desktop applications. Not sure, what the future plans for supporting desktop on an attached screen are though.
Currently it is optimized for phones, tablets are next. The desktop support is probably a little further down the road.

yeah it does.. but it still doesn't support android apps that can be used on Unity GUI on external screen
I hope they will focus ob the important things. I Tried to use ubuntu with the complete Linux installer but everytime i get a grey screen with an x as the mouse pointer and everything i tried dont work. Xstartup file and so on. I really like to use my phone as a desktop replacement but this will take ages... Phones are getting stronger & stronger and all we geht are these phone OS... My current laptop is a single core 1.6 GHz asus eeepc. I could clock my phone to 1.6 GHz and it has 4 cores. Unleash the power for a full experience devs!!!
i9300 / Cyanogenmod 10.2 stabile / boeffla 2.1
I don't think they support Ubuntu for Android anymore.
They focus on bringing Ubuntu to smartphones though. I've been running it as my main OS on my phone for almost two months now and I love it.
Canonical plans to start developing Unity 8 for the desktop after the release of Ubuntu 14.04 in April. According to a video by Canonical, they hope to add basic desktop support this year.
As soon as they get Unity 8 running on the desktop, it shouldn't be that difficult to offer the desktop mode on phones when you connect them to a bigger screen.
So I'm eagerly waiting for that.
The Linux on android project is currently working on something almost just like Ubuntu for android. They think canonical dropped the ball and had a crowdsource campaign to fund hiring full time devs for it.
Direct frame buffer access is coming among other awesome stuff.
I'm a new user so I had to add spaces to the link
http ://linuxonandroid. org/indiegogo-campaign-time-to-build-convergence/
I would love to see it finished. It would save me dev time xD

Can Ubuntu be used in Moto G?
Hello.
Can Ubuntu be used in Moto G ?
Why so late?
Sadly, Cannonical failed to meet their 32 milion $ goal with Ubuntu Edge crowdfunding campaign, but it seems that 2014 will be the year of Ubuntu Touch, the first fully functional OS release, but again, why so late?

Why so late? It was never late. There's a lot of work that Cannonical has on their shoulders. Honestly, this year is going to boom for Android. So much has jumped out in the few months, it's crazy!

Yeah, I guess you mean this one: http://youtu.be/VHHwHM8__Q4
Keep in mind though that it is the tablet UI running on a laptop. The desktop UI will be implemented after the release of 14.04, which will be in a few days.
Yeahright that's the one I saw!
thx 4 explanation, wasn't aware of the difference.
17th of April is the release date
