[Q] Weak GPS signal : hardware fix ? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello there,
I'm facing some troubles using my GPS (i9100P). I think it's a hardware issue since I already tested different kernels / ROM and tried multiple GPS tools without big changes. I just successfully improved the quickness of the fix.
For now, fix is just awesome : 10 satellites fixed in 3-4s. The issue is related to the weakness of the signal. It can be lost when driving near a truck, a bridge or small buildings. Using "GPS test" software outdoor in a clear view, SNR is about 25-30 for the best satellites. I think it's weak !
Do you think it's a hardware issue (probably my GPS module ending its life) ? Which part should I change ? I think it's the module including speaker but I'm not sure :
http://i01.i.aliimg.com/img/pb/148/330/446/446330148_718.jpg
Hope someone can help me to fix that issue ! Thanks

Clean install made using Odin : repartition / full wipe, XXKI3/XXLPX install, but same issue with GPS. I really think it's a hardware issue.

I don't have service center near home / work :-s.
If my S2 needs to be repaired, I will probably do it myself. That's why I need to know what part to change. Since phone's value is near 100€, I don't want to repair it if that costs more than 20-30€.
Anyone knows which part of the phone integrate GPS module ?

You need the service manuals; they've been posted here from time to time - do an XDA search (or a Google search with XDA appended to your search terms), or a Google search should find them easily enough on other sites.
You could also take it to any local mobile repair shop, it doesn't have to be a Samsung service centre who does the repair.

Got it ! Thanks
I learned that speaker part integrates antenna, and GPS receiver is fixed on motherboard ! It seems to be hard to change GPS receiver without equipment (and experience !).
Will check if speaker part seems good (removing / cleaning it), then checking / cleaning GPS receiver part. Hope this will solve my issue.
I found a local mobile repair shop near my home. I asked it how much it will cost... waiting for the answer

Yeah it can be tricky to replace parts like that if you don't have experience. Good luck, let us know how you get on in this thread.

This week-end, I cleaned my i9100p hardware but nothing changed ! I noticed that without HP/antenna part, I can't fix GSM nor GPS signal. This part seems to be the heart of the signal reception. I plan to change it as soon as possible. This morning, I ordered HP/antenna part :
http://www.htcn.fr/pieces-detachees...ut-parleur-dock-galaxy-s2-i9100-sonnerie.html
I don't know if this will solve my issue, but I really hope for it !
Someone in a french forum explained me a way to improve GPS signal. This seems to be really easy to do. I will try it tonight and test it tomorrow
http://galaxys-team.fr/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=41110&p=634046#p634044
More news tomorrow !

Keep posting your progress, this thread is going to be a really useful reference for people in future once you've fixed it

I have tested the hardware fix linked in my previous post. Unfortunately, that doesn't solve my issue. Maybe because it's a i9100P (NFC version), with a special battery cover. Moreover, I made this fix quickly. Will try again later.
I'm now waiting for my new HP/antenna part, that will probably be received this week-end !
Edit : HP/antenna part has been sent by HTCN. I will received part thurday or friday. More news soon

HP/antenna part changed. Unfortunately, issue not solved
For now, I don't know what to do... It seems that the guilty is the GPS receiver (fixed on motherboard), but it's a bit hard to change. I will check again /root/etc/gps, sirfgps.conf and gps.conf, but I'm not optimist ! Phone only costs about 100€ here : ask a center to repair it is not a good idea, in my opinion.
If anyone has an idea, please post here ! It seems that I have to buy a S3 4G soon :-s

Yeah unfortunately replacing individual components on the board is really really difficult to do unless you absolutely know what you're doing - a fiddly job, very easy to damage the board itself or other components beyond repair if you mess up. And you'd have to source a 2nd hand board to get the components to replace anyway, so you might as well just swap the whole board. Samsung service centres don't replace individual components on the board because it's easier for them to just swap the whole board and they charge a lot for labour.
If you want to keep the phone, replace the whole motherboard; source a 2nd hand one online, and either swap yourself or pay a local mobile repair shop (not Samsung service centre) to swap. But you could also buy a fairly good phone for not much more than that (or even the same amount if you bought a 2nd hand phone).
So given what you've already tried (and you have tried everything), I'd probably be looking at a new phone if I was in your situation.

[Q] Bad WIFI reception, driver or hardware issue?

Hey guys,
I do got some issues with the WIFI reception on my gtab. The signal is always very low and weak. I tried every rom, even did an NVFlash to go stock but that didnt help either. I did put carbon stickers on the whole device though, can that have any impact? Are there more people with this problem and if so have you got stickers on the device? Please let me know, thanks in adance!!
Peace!
After submitting this post my connection dropped which it also does more often.
Anyone has a clue?
3sade,
I actually had this same problem about 2 weeks ago. I would be directly over my WiFi AP and had a weak signal (2bars) no matter what ROM I used. I called up GTab support (310) 228-4000 and opened a RMA with them. Despite what's I've read in other posts, support was very nice and willing to help for me. They will tell you that you'll have to remove the carbon stick from the device and restore it to the stock ROM. That part sucks but when I got my gtab back (14 business day wait), it is in better working condition then when I sent it to them (the screen is more responsive, seems less sluggish with the stock ROM).
I don't know if this is what you were hoping to hear, but I thought I would pass it along.
I'm sorry to reply to an old thread but I've just recieved a hannspad sn10t1 which I believe has similar if not the same hardware as the GTab. I'm having the same issue with wifi connection, if I actually touch it to the router then I might get 3 bars! I definately cant leave the room and still be connected.
Have I got a faulty unit or is there a software or settings fix? By the sound of this its a hardware fault but I'd rather try and find a fix first.

Most definitely a hardware issue. It sound like your antenna is not even connected at all. I would contact the manufacture for a RMA. If not crack it open and find the antenna

Asus contact - there is a hardware fix available

Asus just contacted me regarding my RMA I just received today. It does work better then my last tablet, but soon as I start streaming bluetooth the wifi just drops right out. Anyway, they indicated THERE IS a hardware fix and I'm going to have to send my tablet BACK to them again. I have no idea what this hardware fix is or what it implies. I'm trying to get back in touch with support so I can get ANOTHER RMA to send the tablet back out again for this "hardware fix".
Your tab is just racking up those flyer miles. Hopefully it gets fixed this time.
I got the same email today saying that they had a hardware fix. They said that it will be a couple weeks before its ready so they suggested that I wait for 2 weeks other wise my tablet will just sit there. Its encouraging for sure.

The real big problem with this is by the time they actually get to service everyone there will be perfectly high end tablets out on the market already. Asus really bombed on this one.

Heck, if they have a fix for the wifi range I'll be ecstatic. You mean I won't have to tape tinfoil to the front of my Prime anymore? If that's true, life will be great.
Of course, ASUS may as well just do a general recall b/c as soon as it hits the fan and people find out there is a wifi fix, they're probably going to get 50% returns anyway. I think a ton of people are putting up with wifi right now because it's adequate but they know it's really not as good as it could or should be.
Prime + properly working WiFi = ABSOLUTELY AWESOME user experience.
EDIT: Also, I think they should make the fix available through their authorized service providers nationwide and not force everyone to send back to the only repair center in the country that appears to be working on these right now.
Well that is encouraging that they have a hardware fix. I agree a mass recall should be done for those who want it. Ship us new ones so we are not waiting for them to get repaired when the mass influx hits. They can use the techs to just fix all the current models we ship back without having rush jobs causing scratches on the cases/glass. Sell them as refurbished and people will still snap them up in a heart beat.

Yes, I heard this as well. Gary from Asus stated this in his last interview with CNET. http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-57373634-94/putting-the-transformer-prime-in-perspective/
"The second area of concern with users is the performance of the unit with Wi-Fi and BT enabled at the same time. For a very small minority of users, this combination resulted in signal dropouts or severely degraded wireless performance. We are still investigating the root cause of this problem with returned units, but it appears to be a random manufacturing process issue with properly attaching an antenna.
At this time we have been reworking or replacing units for customers who have reported this problem. In addition, we will start a standardized repair process shortly to ensure any units that still suffer from the problem are properly fixed and offer the same level of Wi-Fi performance as the current shipping units."
The broadcom combo chip is what controls the WIFI/GPS/Bluetooth. Look at BOLD statement above. Not sure what he is talking about atm. I thought WIFI/Bluetooth was ran out of same antenna. I have the WIFI/Bluetooth fallout as well. I modded my prime and have external antenna directly from pogo pin locations. So..... I think it must be something else HARDWARE related. Maybe a resistor or something else coming from the chip that is not right? I been thinking about this ever since I heard that statement.

I think all Primes have this issue, it's just only a small amount of Prime owners are streaming audio over Bluetooth. That is why the hardware fix won't be ready for about 2 weeks, and I am not sure how long before the production Primes will come off the line with the fix included.

I agree. Gary is quoted saying "a very small minority of users" have this issue. I haven't heard of anyone yet that owns a prime that doesn't have this issue.
The big ? is.. What is this hardware fix? I would love to open a prime that has the WIFI/BT issue fixed by Asus. See what they have done to it. I highly doubt it is the broadcom chip itself. Must be a smaller component flawed on mobo to cause this issue.
This could also be a fix for weak wifi in general. A couple of people have posted that "insider sources" other than Gary said there was some sort of hardware antenna fix in the works, probably within 30 days. Could be related to these emails.

Yes. They keep referring to "Antenna fix." My factory WIFI/GPS antenna are removed. I have antenna directly to mobo pogos via SMA connectors. I still have the WIFI/BT fallout issue. That is why I keep thinking its something on the primes mobo that is not right. Hmmmmm maybe something to do with the shielding and the broadcom chip?
Anywho... yes it would be cool to see what they do since they tell us that it IS a Hardware issue.
Hardware fix
The hint is the combo chip were they share the B/T and Wi-Fi I believe they are separating them and the antennas.
Would be great if we could get this verified and made into an official ASUS sticky thread. I know we are all very interested in the outcome.
Edit: If the new hardware fixes wifi range, that is. I am aware that an official sticky thread exists for the BT fallout issue.

Yes. I am going to pull the broadcom #'s on the combo chip tonight if I get a chance. Then find out what pinouts control the WIFI/BT combo. I do know that WIFI and BT both operate at 2.4ghz. And I thought share the same antenna. I didn't think they could seperate it. Hey maybe I will learn something. Always fun!
Anyone else have some ideas on this whole issue?

I think i have one of those with no problems.
I compared wifi signal reading with signal reading on my laptop to same acceespoint , its only couple db lower.
Today i went for a drive with gps test on. 90% of the time i had gps lock. I had up to 12 sats.

1. I think Gary was referring to the Bluetooth dropout issue.
2. My Prime gets almost exactly the same signal as my HTC phone but the data throughput drops off a lot more at the same distance.
3. Those who want GPS for navigation would say that losing your lock 10% of the time is a problem. (especially in cities where you need to make a number of quick turns in short distances)
Not saying that you should be discontent. Just observing the counterpoint.

[Q] Have weak signal after repairing SOLVED

hello to comunity,
i have the samsung galaxy s 2 gt-u9100 mobile phone and everything was perfect untill i opened the phone, the phone has problem at the back housing so i ordered a new one and replaced it, i made everything with caution and slowly. while i changed the back housing i opened the phone and everything was good untill i saw that there was no signal. i did it 2g and i see that there is onlu on raw ar the signal and sometimes none.
i opened the phone again and checked everything but saw nothing wrong. as i searched i saw that the GSM is this part and the cable that connects the antenna is this one . both of them are perfect.
i lost all my day trying with that , at start i had SlimRom 2 then i put the stock one via Odin but it didnt boot, stocked in the boot image (didnt wanted to search why ) so i flashed kernel again and then NeatRom, still no signal and then i went back to SlimRom. but the problem as i saw is not from the rom .
if anyone knows about that thing and tell me what to do i would be gladfull .
That bit is the antenna c/w speaker. There is a thread related to this about usb replacement.People mention about similar problems when they remove the antenna cable.
Heres a pic of spares I have, and look at the gold contacts on the antenna,as they need to be in good contact with the ones on the usb board.Maybe its that,or maybe new antenna is faulty.Try your old one in to eliminate that though. It could even be the antenna cable.
The thread is by someone whos name is Dugud,or similar

thanks a lot for your reply my friend, my problem is not with the usb think i thing, it must be with the cable or i dunno. i had verry good signal and everything was working, now just the signal got verry low.
exept from buying repair part you say there is no fix right?

maybe take it to a shop with someone who knows what they are doing. I just had to do this with mine, I considered trying to get parts cheap and diy then I considered how much time and stress it could cause me = not worth it. It cost me £25 to have usb replaced, second thing I checked was the signal as I see many having problems with this - outcome is my phone is working sweet again and it only took a couple of hours of my time :cyclops:
Best of luck
Did you read that thread?.I seen a post on here once where someone said they removed that white antenna cable, then refitted it,and lost signal. Then they bought a new cable, which solved the problem.
Also, you dont know the condition of the part you changed, and theoretically you are meant to use anti static wristband and mat when your touching sensitive electronic components......lol

GPS suddenly bad

Hi there,
Suddenly, out of nowhere, the GPS on my Desire X is experiencing poor signal. Even if outside I can barely see any satelites (according to "GPS Status"). Previously, I could lock on satelites even from within my house.
I've tried rebooting, but no luck.
Does any of you know if the GPS antenna can disconnect inside the device? I have indeed dropped the device (but that's more a rule than an exception)

Maybe possible. You can check by opening your device according to this video on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzRsLDahWVg
But, do you are still on stock ROM or did you install a custom ROM / kernel recently?

@dansou901, good idea. But it would be nice if anyone could tell on beforehand before cranking the device apart
(I'm on myONEdx 2.0, and as you can see, that's an old one)
Thanks
Then maybe try to update to recent version (RC 4.0) and do a factory reset before that, may help.

Maybe - that will be my "last" attempt. I'll rather take it apart - I think that is time better invested based on the theory that an antenna may have disconnected... I may end up doing both

And so I did. And I believe that I found and solved the problem... Under the plate surrounding the camera are connectors that connect to what I believe are antennas in that very same plate (did that make sense?). One of them fell out when disassembling, so I soldered it on, assembled again, and at least gps is working again.
(I reckon a hard concentrated punch in the vicinity of the camera can break these connectors, either breaking wifi or gps, so be careful)

Bluetooth settings fault Eonon G5153F + Malaysk ROM

Im running the Malaysk ROM for RK3188 on my Eonon GA5153F
Since flashing the Malaysk ROM my bluetooth settings keep reverting to default, carkit device name etc.
Even if I manage to change them and even hold the settings for a coupe of boots on rare occasions they always revert to carkit and the default pin.
This problem has repeated over 2 versions of the ROM and posting in the Malaysk RK3188 thread brought nothing useful in the way of info.
Anyone have any ideas or suggestions how to sort this out, its very annoying and I desperately need bluetooth handsfree back for work purposes.
Dont know if its relevant - I also have the GA5153F and although everything was fine with Malaysks 4.4. ROM - when i updated to his 5.1 version - bluetooth did not work until I changed the bluetooth adapter in Factory Settings to the non "b" version (same model number) since then it works great.
Yep, youll get nothing with the wrong adapter set.
Unfortunately this is a different fault.
Anybody?
I know others have suffered this problem, doesnt anyone have any other suggestions?

Im sure it is, but it doesnt help solve the real fault with the kit Ive already purchased, fitted, and seriously need to function as I regularly need to take calls when driving, Im a courier.
Frankly I didnt have any call quality issues when it was working, its the total lack of function thats a bit of an issue!
Is this a hardware fault? Is it a Rom fault? IS it a media board fault? IS it as simple as a file somewhere being over written or with bad permissions?
Non b worked for me but now I have no wifi

It is essentially a manufacturer (software) issue. Malaysk has mentioned somewhere that Chinese developers messed up the BT stack. You must understand that these units use a plethora of BT boards from various suppliers AND in various HW revisions. Nobody will work on a universal BT service that accommodates all these boards. Your best bet, if you want to use the on-board BT, is to find a ROM that works, through trial and error, and stay with that one.

Thanks I am aware of the hardware diversity. It is frustrating that these companies have a weak attitude to stability. However the original rom had functional Bluetooth, and the Malaysk rom is supposed to be based upon it, thats what is also frustrating.
I tried posting in the Malaysk thread but it was largely ignored, scoffed at and lost in all the noise.
Anyone else?
