The LG G2, ROOT and you... - G2 General

A brief history of KitKat and ROOT
Nexus devices and all other devices with unlockable bootloaders have root, because those devices can have custom recoveries and flashing superuser.zip is possible.
The Moto X has root on 4.4 because 4.2.2 was rootable and JCase figured out how to keep that exploit through an OTA to 4.4. This method is broken on 4.4.2 rolling out now.
The G2 has root on 4.2 AND a work around the locked bootloader with LOKI.
It was discovered that you could keep root on 4.4.2 on the G2 by using the 4.2.2 bootloader AND a custom kernel. The stock kitkat kernel will NOT boot unless the 4.4.2 bootloader is present. G2 variants with released kernel sources have root thanks to this discovery.
The method involves rooting 4.2.2, using the loki exploit to install recovery, then flashing the rooted 4.4.2 stock rom FOR YOUR VARIANT.
As soon as source code is released by LG for your variant, a custom kernel which will work with the 4.2.2 bootloader can be built.
This is where we are today.
KitKat has been out for several months and an exploit for root has not been found.
Edit....
Autoprime has rooted KitKat. Ioroot works.

Any word yet for the d801 from T-Mobile?

Do you know if SuperSU would be able to retain root w/ the 4.4.2 OTA and Survival mode enabled?

I believe I am right in saying that it can but it's uses will be very limited as you will be unable to flash a custom recovery. Depends what you require from your rooted device.

SuperSU survival mode didn't work from JB to KK via OTA, for what it's worth. I just want to run a couple of root apps + xposed, so it would have been ideal.

Didn't survive root for me either. T-Mobile D801.

You said that after several months an exploit for root has nor been found.
So should we expect a solution and nor a workaround for the bootloader in one month or more?
Or should we expect to not see a solution at all?

The point of my thread is to say where we are. There is no way to speculate about when/if root gets found for kitkat.

I understand so for the moment we have nothing !

I just saw an article in android news on flipboard that chainfire has already rooted the galaxy s5 and its not even out yet.
Hopefully we can get something soon.

Samsung must not have patched the Odin exploit. Chainfire's Samsung roots involve flashing a rooted image if I recall.

This rather sucks, as I got another G2 and it came with 4.4.2 already installed. I think I'm screwed until an actual exploit comes along. I want my root, but not enough to downgrade > upgrade > potentially find out it didn't survive. Bleh. And who knows, they might even have patched the bootloader for all I know.
Having said all that, where might one find a JB image for a D800?

To answer my own question... there's a thread here that describes going back to JellyBean, with links to several other threads with additional options, such as mixed firmware and other things.
FWIW, I want to revert to JB for two reasons. One, I don't see a great deal of improvement with KK (for my purposes at least). Second, of course, is to have root -- primarily so I can block ads without having to run Spotflux.
Of course, flashing a ROM backwards like this necessitates wiping the phone, which is a pain in the ass I'm not sure I need right now. It would be a lot better to just have root for KitKat, obviously.

An exploit has been found, and it works fine on the D800 4 4.2 as tested by me. I now have root. Just follow this link, it called IOROOT25: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=51506801

[Q] Updated to 4.3. Is it too late to root?

So I had plugged my device in to my computer, and it updated to 4.3. I did a factory reset, but it is too late. Does this mean my bootloader is now locked without a way to unlock at the moment? For the moment, yes. Attempting to return to a previous stock ROM, even via ODIN, will fail - I tried this myself last night. ODIN hangs on trying to install the last part of the ROM (the bootloader, if I remember right). If you do try to use ODIN to restore a stock ROM, you will need to run a repair install of the 4.3 ROM (you'll lose all data on the phone). Fun stuff.
So in short, we're locked & unrooted if we update using the official update via Verizon's update software.

You can try to root with kingo (google it, xda won't allow links to it) but you may be out of luck on unlocking the bootloader again unless someone finds another exploit.

Aren't both the S4 and N3 4.3 builds rooted? Maybe you're thinking bootloader unlocking???
After OTA my n2 lost root.
I can also confirm, that Kingo roots the N2 after taking the Verizon OTA, but the bootloader remains locked. For me acquiring root again was great, because I use the Xposed framework a lot and many other apps that need root. As for the bootloader, I'm sure that sooner or later, one of the great devs will kick butt and get it unlocked. For those guys that challenge is like an itch.

Wouldn't bet on it. S4 and Note 3 are both locked and will likely remain that way. Never say never but the likelihood is slim.

Q: Do I goto 4.3 ?

All:
I have my note II rooted, and its running 4.1.2
I received the OTA today, and I chose not to download it. Just curious on what folks are doing ?
I dont run any custom rom on my Note II, I just use it for rooting purposes....
if I do want to upgrade to 4.3 what is the suggested path of action ?
I thought I could use wugfresh I guess not though ?
Thanks

Once you upgrade to 4.3 OTA, your bootloader is locked and root is gone, along with the generally unwelcome addition of Samsung's KNOX technology. No bootloader exploit currently exists. If you upgrade by flashing one of the ROM's here on XDA or the non-OTA update to 4.3 (check the Android Development forum), you get the latest software and keep an unlocked bootloader & root.

Wife gave me my Christmas present yesterday...(a Note 2 she bought used...lovely phone). It started an update when I fired it up, (has been so long since I rooted my Bionic, I completely forgot about OTA's) It now has 4.3, and the only sort of tethering I can mange with it is usb pdanet, which merely qualifies as 'better than nothing', as it often drops out. Might have to put the damn thing in a drawer and fire up the Bionic until the tech gods here work it out. I made the same move after my speaker started going on my BIONIC, fortunately for me I made the move to the N2 a few months ago. If you are lucky and someone is able to get the bootloader unlocked on 4.3, you should find this device much easier to work with then using Safestrap and all that other jazz. Odin is sort of like using HOB except I have only had to use it twice and not constantly. Once to unlock the bootloader initially and just recently to update the modem and wifi parameters when I made the move to 4.3
Hopefully someone can help you get set up to use the N2 the way you need it.

And also Verizon is the largest carrier for military and commercial contracts...to keep them and get more the phones have to be as secure as possible.
Anyone try to see if Towelroot works with this build?
I think they need to find another root method. Towelroot only works on kernels june 3 and below. I have no idea if it will work if you used it
I'm not upgrading. All flashaholics like me will DEFINITELY just wait for a possible exploit for NC5 than hope for the almost nonexistent chance there will be an unlock in the new firmware. Just my $0.02

We have been able to use towelroot on the latest updates for the att S4, S5, and Vz S5 by flashing back the previous kernel, rooting, then reflashing the new unexploitable kernel. Vz S4 users will likely be able to do the same on NG6.

Towelroot is guaranteed not to work. A better option is to grab the update from your cache/fota folder and post so that we can make a workaround to keep root.

It's confirmed that towelroot doesn't work. The version is still 4.4.2. The first thing I noticed was the GPS toggle in the notification area is now a Location toggle.
Any method of rooting?
Now that Towelroot is out, is there any way of rooting on the latest version? Downgrading, flashing an image in Odin, etc? Or are we pretty much screwed until a work around is found?

There is a very good chance that the kernel swap method will work on this latest build.
Someone just needs to grab the ota from their device. We'll take the kernel from the new update and package it into an Odin flashable .tar. You'll then flash the old NC5 kernel after taking the update, re-boot and root using towelroot, then reflash the new kernel. No guarantees but this method has been working on all of the latest Sammy updates.

I could give you guys the OTA if you tell me how to do it. I'm by no means an expert at rooting, but I've had a few years experience. So basically you'll modify the new kernel to allow downgrading to NC5, root, then update again? I had Towelroot before I updated, had OTA survival mode enabled in SuperSU, and had it installed as a system app, but I still lost root on this latest update. :crying:

[Q]: TW 5.0.1 and SafeStrap

Yesterday Verizon posted information about the lollipop update 5.0.1.
I'm assuming that the current 5.73 SafeStrap will not work with the stock 5.0.1 firmware. Do any devs have an idea how to load Roms onto the s4 after the update? Or do we assume that anyone not running an MDK bootloader is stuck in 4.4.x based or with the stock 5.0.1 TW?

I would say wait and see. I have been seeing other updates to 5.0 also updating the bootloader. Maybe a new exploit in there? I would wait to take the update until either A: It is confirmed that SS will/will not work or B: they find a new exploit to use.
Currently, there is no new exploits for lollipop, and there is no rooting method to lollipop. If you REALLY want lollipop, I suggest you flash NC5 and then use software update to update all the way to lollipop.

Wait?
There are guides out there to upgrade and keep root.i would advise using one of those.
If you upgrade to the OTA OC1 you will be on another locked boot loader with no way to downgrade back to Kitkat if you don't like it.
Currently as it stands, there's no root for OTA OC1. There's also no Safestrap that will work with it and no way to Odin back to nc5 once you do the OTA upgrade.

Current Verizon LG G3 (its 99 cents on sale, I have some questions)

Its time for an upgrade and I am eyeing the G3. Its currently $.99 on upgrade, and the price is playing a big part in my decision as money is tight right now and my older S3 is falling apart.
The thing that draws me to this phone is its unlocked bootloader. I have tried to research on my own, and what I have found is that you can get a custom recovery and ROM on a G3 from most stock OOB configs.
However, I cant find any super recent talk of it. That doesnt mean there isnt, it just means I havent found it on this forum or elsewhere and my Search-Fu is probably weak.. I believe I read that the G3 was recently updated OTA to lolipop, and my question is does the CURRENT, brand new G3 from verizon still have the capability to install custom roms? I am no smartphone expert, ive rooted and custom rom'd an old tablet and I am confident in my technical skills, and I just want to make sure that the phone (which i probably will go pick up from the VZW store tomorrow) is still viable because if its not, ill probably get a different phone. I will go deeper into research mode once I know for sure, I am worried though that the bootloader has been locked as this happened to the S3 later in its life after the Kitkat upgrade.
TLDR is a new G3 from verizon still ROM'able and such?
Thank you for your help, this is a pretty awesome site/forum and I hate to bother you all with noobish questions!

Plan on kdz'ing or tot'ing back to the stock firmware (10B), and then root, unlock, and install TWRP (custom recovery), and you'll be good to go to install custom roms! All OOB firmwares from Verizon can be kdz'ed or tot'ed back to the stock firmware, so yes that's a HUGE plus.

If the phone ships with the latest 24B update you can root with my script but TWRP will not work yet.

My root script will root 24B. Autorec works with 23C and only 23C. So 24B = Root only but 23C = Root + TWRP. Check out my toolkit which will do all of this for you. bit.ly/VZWG3Toolkit

Thanks! I'll check it out. I really don't want a new Rom anyway. Just interested in the battery saving apps

That's correct. And whether or not you want a custom ROM, I would still root AND unlock, that way you can install TWRP, take nandroid backups, etc. and thereby make it easier on yourself if you ever jacked up the phone doing something with root. I figure if you're gonna go to the trouble of rooting, might as well unlock too. Just my 2 cents

Technically, it's not unlocked. There is an exploit that allows you to flash custom ROMs and kernels as if the bootloader was unlocked. On the surface, yes. You could say it's unlocked, but it it were truly unlocked, you could flash TWRP without having to be rooted. But you can't replace the recovery correctly without being rooted first. Hence, it's an exploit that skirts around the locked bootloader. It's still locked, but an exploit allows you to flash TWRP after you are rooted.
Here's what I know:
The first thing you must do is root the phone. You can root 24B as stated earlier by an earlier post.
Once rooted, you can flash TWRP but only if you are not on 24B. If you are on the latest OTA (24b), you can still flash TWRP, but it requires some extra steps. However, there is an app for this that you can install and run and it will prep your phone for TWRP and then install TWRP. It's basically a one-click TWRP install. You can get it in the Google Play store at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=b007.autorecvs985. Saves a lot of headaches.
So, I can one-click root my phone. Then install the LG G3 AutoRec-LP app to flash TWRP for me and I'm done!
You're bootloader is not unlocked, but TWRP is a "bumped" version. Bumping is the term they use for taking advantage of the exploit. But, you can't just flash any ROM out there for the G3. ROMs are specific to the model of the phone you have. For instance, you cannot take a D855 version (UK version of G3 I believe) of a ROM and flash it on your VS985 version. You'll brick it. ROMs have to also be "bumped" in order to work and be flashed, hence that is why the ROMs are specific to each model of the G3.
So if the AT&T version of the g3 has a ROM but the Verizon doesn't have that particular ROM, it's because the dev hasn't bumped their ROM for VS985. So, you can only flash those ROMs that are bumped for VS985.
But, the bumped version of TWRP and the ROMs act the same as if you had an unlocked bootloader, but it's an exploit that could be patched in the future. For whatever reason, LG and Verzion have not done that. Not sure why. But, caution on blindly taking any future OTAs. I would wait until you hear whether you can either revert back to a previous version to exploit and still root and bump on that previous version or not. Otherwise, you will be SOL.
As for unlocking the bootloader, that has only been allowed for overseas variants of the G3, but there is one issue that many might now like. When you truly unlock the bootloader with LG's unlocking tool, DRM is removed (which many would love), but then that means, some movie streaming services you use might not work any more because of the DRM removal. So, my feeling right now is, bumping is the best way to go.
Here's LG's description of what happens when you unlock it officially using their tool (mind you, as I stated, this is only for overseas variants of the G3):
