Does the Knox e-fuse on the Note 3 affect Sprint's 'Total Equipment Protection' warranty in any way or is it just Samsung specific?

Nope, not even close.
There's a highly knowledgeable RC here that puts something to that effect in his signature line. He's even quoted from the document that supports his assertion that it has no impact on your TEP.

Thanks for the quick reply.
The phone is already rooted which is great all on its own, but seeing how beautiful pure android looks on Nexus 5's makes me a tad bit jealous. That and personally, i think touchwiz is getting a tad bland.

I have a Nexus 7 2013 and love pure Android. But this phone is a beast, and needs that bland looking crap to actualize it's full power.
Love it or hate it, TouchWiz is more than a skin or launcher, but is highly Integrated into the operating system your device. Might as well live with it, tame it to look the way you want (there are lots of roms and themes from which to choose).
Enjoy your phone and make it yours. But I personally see pure Android as sort of crippling this feature laden, beast of a device that was meant to have on it thar which the manufacturer, rightly or not, chose to include.

It doesn't even really bother me with the tedious simplicity of it. The problem is more or less the fact that Samsung is honestly godawful at matching colors. Going through the different views and menus of TouchWiz is similar to an episode of teletubbies on a 40" flat panel.
Just need to make this 1080p AMOLED shine with some amazing theming.

Hit the themes and apps thread. There are options, and they are growing.
There are also themed roms in the dev forum to address these issues.

That makes the most sense, though I'm struggling to find anyone who has sent the phone back to Sprint that has posted about it. Does anyone know what has actually happened for 0x1 people who sent their phone in?

I was in a Sprint Corporate Store today, upgrading an old flip phone I had. Showed the tech my rooted, one month old, Note 3. He said that he cannot touch a rooted phone. So, I said what happens if I unroot the phone? The tech said no problem, he can warranty it. Sprint doesn't care about KNOX. Samsung cares about KNOX, if you spent millions on a security system from the NSA and it failed or was hacked, well you get the idea!!!

That's what I figured, but these threads are filled with people speculating, and no one reporting what they actually did or what happened. I love XDA, but sometimes everyone here misses the really obvious ways they can help people. I did PM one person who said months ago that he was sending in his Knox 0x1 Note 3 to Sprint and crossing his fingers, and he responded to me that he got it back, unrooted, with no problem, so that's at least one person who was fine. I'm going to send mine back now and report here if I have any issues.

This is the way Sprint looks at it. If you bring in a rooted device, they by company policy won't touch it. If you unroot the phone, they will warranty the device. I know this is the way it works if you bring the phone to a corporate store, I did it, If you send in a unrooted device, I know they will warranty it. Trust me, I have a kids with rooted cell phones. If the device is rooted and you HARD BRICK the phone, or drop it in a lake while it is on. There is no way to tell if it is rooted. So, they at there choosing either install a fresh OS (if possible), or replace the device.

Just got my S 4 a few days ago. BestBuy guy fiddling with it updated it to the ME7 build of which I had no idea couldn't get boot loader unlocked for yet. If I had known that at the time, I wouldn't have been letting him mess with it so long. Anyway, I am on ME7 and rooted..thank goodness that's available at least. Any word on the unlocked boot loader? Est. time on how long it takes to crack these things? I'm coming up from the SIII which I loved flashing new ROMs and fell in love with CleanROM, Hyperdrive and Bonestock. It's kind of a bummer I got my S 4, which I love btw, but I can't put that awesomeness on it yet. Any info would be great! Thanks everyone and as always Android>iOS woooooooooo

Hello Friends,
Just bought a N3, and a current owner of an S4. Hope you're well. Quick questions:
1. What is the best/recommended way of rooting the N3. I heard Kingo or something like that works, flawlessly?
2. So I heard KNOX counter is ONLY tripped if a CUSTOM Recovery is flashed. I assume on the N3, we still need something like TWRP or CWM to flash Custom ROM, is that correct? If so, which one do you guys recommend? How do you flash it (Odin or Flashable ZIP {Link please?})? And will it void my warranty or up the KNOX count? If so, what exactly do I lose that way?
3. Where can I find the names of the Releases and Firmwares released for the Sprint N3? And what is the latest?
4. What ROM would you recommend that's polished AND highly customizable? (For S4 users, I am looking for something like "Sacs" for N3?
5. I noticed that the Development section is nearly dead for the Note 3. Especially for Sprint. AT&T didn't even have a single ROM, if I remember. Only the T-Mobile forum had a wide selection of ROMs for the Note 3. Anyone know, why and do we expect that to change around here?
Thank you in advance for helping me!

ok.. So CF root is the best way using odin. . I also came from the galaxy s4 and really never gave thought to Knox it doesn't bother me and if you search you will get different answers about Knox from everyone, yes your warranty is now voided but if you can figure out how to reset your Knox to its original state and put back the original recovery and ROM yes you can get service from sprint in the sprint store. . But they will not service it with after market recovery and a themed ROM..I think the latest firmware is mj5 but What is available or what everyone is using I should say is mj4.. CHECK OUT JELLYBOMB ROM.. For the N3. . The development is slow in my opinion and only mine because the phone is new and the phone is pretty pricey for someone that wants to do an upgrade and not the 1 up thing. . And last but not least the developer didn't get there phones yet from there wives and girlfriend for x mas yet. So I think things will pick up in January. .

Gentlemen, thank you very much for your very informative responses! Especially Monty on the extended response. Some follow ups come to mind:
1. So I could careless about service from Sprint. I bought mine from Craigslist and don't use the phone on Sprint, anyway. However, it seems like there is NO way to reverse the Knox counter, which means that I cannot get service from Samsung... is that true? (In case the Motherboard is fried or whatever?)
2. As Android owners, roaming the XDA, no less, I am sure you guys are like me, that is, you itch till you drop, until the phone's rooted and a Custom Recovery is on-board (am I right !?). If Custom Recoveries are needed for essentials like Custom ROMs and Nandroids, how are you guys making do WITHOUT those? I know Root + TitaniumBackup to remove Bloat, and Xposed Wanam will hold us over a bit. But how are you guys getting NEW, STOCK Rooted versions and not making Nandroids, with the Stock recoveries?
3. Agreed, and hoping that development picks up for these, otherwise it would be a shame. Still surprised to see how many ROMs they had over at T-Mobile and even Verizon forums !! Can any of those themes and or Mods be used with the Sprints?
4. So are we unanimous, JellyBomb is the closest to being the most customized(able) ROM available for Sprint Note 3s? If so, what exactly is that ROM? Is it TouchWiz or AOSP :-/?
5. For my S4 friends... is there a modification app like 3minit settings available that we can use with Stock, Rooted ROMs to change the COLOR of the Settings toggles?
Thanks again for getting the ball rolling on my questions, guys. I know they are a lot, but trying to learn as fast as possible !
If your motherboard is fried Samsung won't be able to turn the phone to see if Knox has been tripped. Best way in my opinion is to take all updates to MJ4 if you haven't yet, then root with kingo, your know should stay at 0. Then use Wanam exposed to make the mods you want. If you really want to make major changes you can always push the needed files via adb. Granted this isn't a complete ROM but it will get you close. I have been running stock with several tweaks applied by wanam and web and get great speed stability and battery.
Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for your response, bud. I am trying to root with Kingo, as we speak. Need some help from the forum for the following:
1. Can someone point me to a guide on how to remove Knox from the phone?
2. Can anyone help me get the 1x/3g mod on my phone?
3. I will also be using the phone flashed to another carrier. Any one of you guys doing that? And if so, how did you get rid of the No Sim error?
4. To de-bloat, can someone point me to a list of APKs, safe to remove for the Sprint variant. I want to keep all the cool features in the camera like Golf, Beauty, and etc?
Thank you again!
rooting WILL ALSO trip knox unless you do it in a way that does no (there is a thread on here about it and how to do it knox safe) I did not care I just rooted I am insured so the warranty is meaningless to me.

I used Kingo to root my phone with one click and no Knox trip.
Installing a Recovery trips the counter, but I realized that us... here in the Sprint Note 3 world don't really have great Custom ROMs to choose from... so why do it anyway? Maybe if I had the T - Mobile version or even Verizon ! That of course you miss out on Nandroids. I hope someone proves me wrong soon.
Just missing the 1x/3G Mod right now.. otherwise I'm all set with Rooted MJ4 and Xposed modules. Good luck...
Can anyone please point me to a list of "Safe to Remove" apps for the Sprint N3? Thanks!
I've noticed only a few ROMS available for the Sprint Note 3. I know Sprint is always a few months behind other carriers but I do greatly prefer Sprint over all other carriers. For their political beliefs there environmental outlook and quality of service. Though... One of my favorite things to do is flash ROMS and tweak my devices. So I'm now I'm in a position where my carrier is preventing me from doing one of the things I enjoy doing. I'm wondering if the ROM developers can start porting their ROMS for SM-N900P Sprint Note 3, or is there a moderately difficult process someone can point me to so I can port them myself. I can follow directions no matter how difficult but I cannot program.

We're in second place in overall threads and as far as the amount of posts, we're in 4th place, but still. While I know this doesn't represent ROMs, it does show activity, and we're not a ghost town. While I'm always for more roms, i like mine to be different enough from each other to be able to tell what i'm flashing.
i guess we could just get a bunch of very similar roms that way you could just flash a new one all day.
though i say with the ones we have, and at the rate they get updated, if yuo install them and play around with each one, by the time you were done there would be updates to the first ones to go back and start the whole series over.
that wasn't a run on sentence by the way.
porting roms is a whole can of worms...
starting with getting permissions from the original authors
to figuring out what needs to be changed to make it work.
can be painfree and simple
or can be worse than doing it from scratch.
though i have a prediction, not that i would have heard or anything, that we will see a few new roms shortly.
shhhhhhhhhhhh dont tell them i told you they wil AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Interesting did you have to do some tweaking or just flash and use. I didn't think Sprint could you other carriers ROMs.

I have to say I agree with shayne....The offset for lte is development which for the i527 will never go anywhere will Knox and all the att bootloader crap...If you can live without lte the i9205 is much faster and smoother than the att megas I've played with and you'll have at least ssome dev support.

i have 4 phones on my acct with AT&T, obviously 1 was for upgrade. i am on the Next program with this one and my 14 day trial ends today.
i have unlimited data grandfathered and wouldnt want to lose that.

I'm in the same boat with grandfathered unlimited data plan...honestly the mega is sick...and if you root your i527 and put setcpu on it you'll see a massive improvement. I think shayne is testing out the settings I run mine on with stock kernel. Just keep it and see how it goes. I'm a huge tinkerer and dev, working in a custom kernel for the mega and still run rooted stock that I themed with xposed and wanam, combined with max clock it's as near as a custom rom as you'd want, with all the stability and speed of a rom. If you just download xposed and wanam the amount of customizations are literally endless.

Also tinted status bar module is dope ...any color you want upon opening any app you want ...but I won't post 100 pics lol

Are you running the ATT version also?
I have often wondered in my 100's of flashes I have done, is it the custom rom that is necessary, or can I get all tge tweaks I really need just by using the Xposed Module.
I do like the phone alot, but I have held off on the root until I decided to keep and I feel I have read enough about it. As Shayne knows, I can really EFF things up if I want too.
In the past with Xposed, I have had reasonable success in modding, of course it could have been me or conflicting options on phone. Does it seem to be fully functional with rooted Mega?

Not with the mega...i have a note 3 n900a att...at least for me, I still try rom, and help some of my friends develop them but I pretty much stopped doing full devs of roms since all the tweaks you'd want can be done to stock with xposed and now wanam, plus stock rom stability. I really only build kernels and flash kernels and theme or tweak my own stock builds. Always heavily themed, sometimes I do some xml or build prop alterations...but since 4.2 I've run pretty much stock with tweaks as I've found it generally faster, smoother and more stable...Especially with certain kernels. And I have to say for a stock kernel the mega has a great one, and is really streamlined and efficient in the source code.
stick with your megas fellas trust me I have several devices l around and I always go back to my mega
(Even changed my xda handle lol)

---------- Post added at 03:50 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:41 PM ----------
And just for the sake of clarity...everything I do, or other devs do either can be done, or is actually done thru xposed and the subsequent modules...so yes you can do everything I woukd do building you a rom in xposed, minus say deodexing or other tweak, which these days with the new krait chips is really unnecessary tbh. The chips are so powerful and efficient in the mega and the quad version of it in the note 3 don't need or show really any noticeable gains by many of the old tricks anymore. So my 2 cents on it...keep the mega, it's the best all round device I own, and by far my favorite. Run xposed, and wanam and I can almost guarantee you won't be missing a single thing.
Mega
I haven't used Xposed, but I'm pretty darn happy with the Mega stock rom. I'm running 4.4 on my captivate and my asus tf300t. The 4.4 is nice and smooth and small! I'm sure we will see a 4.4 update eventually for the mega. Google's ART feature is still very experimental, once they get that matured and implemented in their 4.4 builds, I'm sure even light weight devices will see the performance benefits.
Having root and being able to remove bloat was a big bonus for me. If I like themed roms, I would most certainly play with Xposed. The battery life on this Mega is something wonderful! Worth keeping the phone just for that reason.
Actually, after rooting and removing ATT and Samsung bloat, I am pretty happy with stock. I alternate between Nova and everything.me launchers.
Believe me, I have been a flashing addict. I have tried every rom available for my 3yo Nook Color, Captivate, Infuse, Note 1 and Nexus 7. And I have tested roms for 4 different Devs.
I find it's refreshing for everything on my phone to work without having to use a third party app (although it is boring)!!! I'm keeping my Mega, but I will probably never use ATT again, unless all the other carriers start locking their phones also.

Im in the same page here.. if rooting works for me is more than enough. I have removed all the "junk" apps and im happy with the stability of the mega and software. Yes is nice to use different roms and have options but at the end of the road as long as there are ways to "personalization" of the mega software im happy. I might miss the kernel abilities.. specially overclocking...
I appreciate the feedback folks and I am in. Stability is the key and I have experience with multiple device. Trusted advice is a valuable thing to and I beleive that is what I am getting here.
I now only need to find the trusted files and instructions on rooting this thing. I think I found them last night, around p40 in the "bounty for root" thread. However, I have always been hesitant about going into build prop and making changes. So I guess I need to read more.
Thanks again folks, ill be around.

With root, exposed, wanam, and nova launcher, I am happier with this phone then I ever was with my note1 or 2. I will still push for a way to flash but funny thing is, I probably would stick with the setup I have now. I guess it's a matter of knowing I could flash if I wanted but No, I don't think I need it or would even use it. What's wrong with me, wanting something, I don't think I will ever use?

Kingoapp.com is the easiest method I have used....ever....bar none!!!!
I may have told you this before, but I went to manage apps and looked at every app....if it gives you the option to "turn off", then you should be able to delete without any problems. I've never had the balls to delete any thing else....
az probably has a complete list of what can be deleted.

This. Once we got root and I used Xposed I'm happy as hell. I just want to be able to flash **** that I'm never gonna use.
Go to kingo and download the app on your pc...its a one click root system for a myriad of devices including the mega i527. I used it on my note 3 n900a with locked bootloader without issue. Enjoy
Mega
We should make a comprehensive list of **** that we have turned off
And another of the mods that we have done
For me I always wanted the clock in the middle with wanam I have it, also changed the battery and some other icons as well so for now even though I can't flash I am sticking with the Mega

Well, not what I was hoping for. But, they say that about the G5.
All I know is that Sammy makes it hard as frick to root their phones, so I'll most likely stay with HTC.
^^^^^ while I agree with sticking with HTC, what, on earth, gives you the impression it's hard to get root on Sammy devices. My experience with GNex, and all I've read, shows sammys are the easiest to root.

Bro....
My brother has the GS4 through Verizon, and there are like 6 different versions.
Rooting wasn't the issue, as I rooted it for him easily. The issue was "bootstrap", "Safestrap", "modems", and other terminology.
Not what I'm used to. He's rooted, but you cannot flash AOSP ROM'S with their locked bootloaders. You can only flash stock ROMS, and you have to use "Safestrap", which apparently makes multiple partitions and you have to keep your original stock ROM.
And then there is Loki, and Odin, whatever the hell those are. I'm guessing for unlocked bootloaders, but I haven't got that far yet.
Friend of mine from work blames Verizon, saying they try to seriously lock down their phones.

I don't know about Samsung devices (on Sprint) but I know rooting my HTC wasn't too bad, but flashing it was a different story.
I'm not sure how much Truth is in that whole story. I mean, who can be THAT foolish? If it was me, I would make sure hat my kids don't even talk about it at school. Shoot...I might not even tell them.
Furthermore, whether this is true or not, this still provides HTC with premature feedback from users who want to see what the M8 will look like. While it is too late for them to make physical changes to the phone, at least they can try to make a few software changes to the phone. For example, I'm sure that someone is going to criticize the camera app. Based on the general consensus, they can make the needed modifications. This video has brought much attention to HTC, whether negative or positive, and there's nothing that good ol' Sammy can do about it.
Did I mention that this is FREE advertising? That's something that HTC never did very well with, and funding has a lot to do with it. I'm not saying that this story can't be true, but I certainly feel that there are more factors at play under the hood.
And to add to those who have said that Samsung is difficult to root, I beg to differ. Once I downloaded the correct files to the computer, it took me 2mins to root my wife's GS3 with an auto root tool. I had to do a lot more work to root my EVO. Mind you, I'm not saying that my EVO was difficult to rllt, but i also had to obtain S-Off in a separate process. You just have to root a Samsung and you're good to go.

I don't know who he got it from, but it wasn't one of his parents. Could be another relative, friend's parent, etc.
