MDK users - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I'm just curious, how many users are on MDK.
I'm one of them ? .i don't know if there are more on MDK than MK2..

Mdk here

I think I'm MDK or at one time was MDK. I can flash aosp roms but the baseband version listed in my phone is MI1, so which am I?

Baseband is your modem.
If you can flash any AOSP ROMs you're on MDK

Well I'm not 100% on flashing a phone to page plus. All I can say is maybe update your recovery to Philz latest and look for a rom that allows you to put Page Plus apns in. But if you're using Philz.. you're still on MDK and I'd have to guess someone here can show you how to get it going.
Also sounds like the kernel your trying to run isn't Loki'd. So look into that.

I'm new to the s4 but not new to flashing roms, flashing to different carriers etc.... I figured all aosp roms had to be loki'd?..... Or else they wouldn't work to begin with? and to modify apns for different carriers, it's as simple as file explorer, find system/etc/apns-conf.xml and modify or replace that.

Yea well you have more experience than I do in that department lol only Verizon and ATT S4's use Loki. Philz latest has auto Loki... Maybe update that and see where it takes you.
If you flash say a TMobile S4 rom onto your phone without Lokifying it...it won't work.

I'd say then update your Philz then try again. There's really no reason you shouldn't be able to flash whatever Verizon rom and be good.
I'd suggest trying Liquid Smooth 4.4 for JFLTE . Since you say the apns aren't an issue. . What version of philz are you on? Some of them had issues with Loki. Like I said the latest works great

[IDEA] Port international firmware/ROM's to Verizon Note 2?

Considering the similarities between the domestic variants of the Note 2 and their international counterparts, would anyone be willing to test some of the success that the folks over in the AT&T forum have had with porting the international N7100/N7105 firmware/ROM's over to the Verizon Note 2
Check out these two threads over in the AT&T forum and see what you all think:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2016575
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2018411
The basic gist of the procedure is to use a custom recovery like CWM or TWRP to flash a stock N7100/N7105 firmware, and then flash your carrier specific modem/kernel.
Why would anyone want to do this? Well, for starters, you would benefit from built-in stock-supported tethering, and a few other features that carriers disable (YMMV). But mainly this means that the domestic versions of the Note 2 can benefit from the development of the international versions! So, when the latest version of Android comes out for the rest of the world, we aren't stuck here waiting for our carrier to catch up to everyone else...
So what do you all think? Anyone willing to try?
ba-ba-ba-BUMP.
What about integrating carrier specific apps? The Verizon version has a data usage app that works without logging into my Verizon.
I do believe that is what scrosler was doing here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2055218 and he said this in the features " Verizon Patch files in a flashable zip can be found http://www.cleanroms.com/downloads/Note2/VZW Patch for 7105 Base.zip This will let the ROM think you are a VZW ROM! Good for the Play Store and APN settings! " But.... He did say he was unsure if it works on other roms in his second post. You possibly could try it. : )
Thanks. . But I'm already using his VZW rom

You risk a soft brick. Just make a nandroid backup first and you'll be fine.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda app-developers app
Just make sure you don't flash modems and keep a stock kernel on hand
Yeah since the hardware is nearly identical I think the most you would risk is a soft brick. The 7100 lacks LTE though so I'm not sureif you would have data on one of those roms. Tell us how it goes if you go through with it.

Anyone running the REVOLT ROM?

Just wondering if anyone knew that there was even a Revolt ROM for the VZW S4?
Been running Eclipse as my daily driver since I got my S4 back in July, but I just discovered the Revolt ROM and may have a new DD. TONS of customizations, pie controls, halo, 4.3, the works! I couldn't find a thread for is in the development section so I thought I'd see if anyone here knew it was even available for the VZW S4, because it in fact, is.
Here's the video review from The Droid Effect that made me look into Revolt:
http://thedroideffect.com/revolt-rom-review-the-new-4-3-aio-rom-king/
Here's the thread for the 4.2.2 version for the other S4's so you can kind of see the full specs (Don't download from there!):

Here's the DOWNLOAD page for the VZW S4:

[Q] question about the gs4

I have the note 3 now, and I'm really disapointed in it. I'm running 4.3 now and will be doing so until I get rid of it, which will be soon. Anyway, I'm going to get the gs4, and I'm a flashaholic, so my question is, if the gs4 I'm getting doesn't have the MDK baseband I'm basically screwed? I have to stick with safestrap for recovery? I change roms like changing socks. Having a locked bootloader on my note 3 sucks, big time. Anyway, thanks guys.

I love my S4. I actually got an MDK one off Swappa myself. I needed a custom recovery and ability to run AOSP ROMs.
And with more unified JFLTE builds coming out lately there are plenty of ROMs to flash. I like the Note 3 myself just it never came with a bootloader vulnerability like the S4 did.

Yea MK2 is still good, just if you're wanting to run any custom ROMs your going to be limited to Touchwiz ROMs only via SafeStrap recovery. Only the MDK build is able to run ROMs like CM . they're devs working on kexec support for SafeStrap so that custom kernel/ROMs can be ran.
The issue with all the builds after MDK is that the security was tightened up with each build. I'll get you a good link that explains a lot of these things...

MDK allowed for the Loki exploit which long story short... allows for your custom recovery and custom kernels/ROMs .
The bootloader isn't truly unlocked like on a Sprint or TMobile S4 but essentially Loki gets you the same end result .
Good luck! I'm sure you'll be able to find one on Swappa and they're cheaper now that the S5 is out.

Questions about s4 root and bootloader. Coming from an s3.

I've read a little bit but I just want to be sure. The s3 was rooted and I believe something was leaked allowing for an unlocked bootloader. I am getting an s4 today from a friend so I was hoping someone can give me a quick overview of where this phone stands.
Mainly I am looked for info on any builds or anything like that I should be careful with. Can every build be rooted and what's going on with the bootloader? Like I said I am pretty familiar with everything I just need a summary of sorts explaining what I should know about this phone coming from the s3. Thanks.

Any Verizon S4 on a build after MDK does NOT have a bootloader exploit ( Loki )
You can root and install SafeStrap on any build up to MK2.

Can someone go over the different build numbers..like which ones there are and in which order..or the security software versions..still confused on what actually matters for bootloader exploit and root.

Bootloader (Generally identical to Build) is what matters.
That is NC5, so you'll be able to do a partial downgrade to MK2, root, and return to NC5 if you want root. No non-TouchWiz roms.
Ahhh really? That's usually all I ran on my s3. I understand the bootloader isn't unlocked but I thought aosp ROMS were still possible with some kind of work around? I thought no bootloader unlock just meant no custom kernels. I remember it being like that back in the droid x days lol
So either way what are best options..revert back to the earlier build..root..then how do I get back to the newer build again to flash

There is no working AOSP for any Verizon S4 after *MDK. You're correct that it just means no custom kernels, but nobody has gotten a fully working AOSP to run under the stock kernels.
This thread has directions for downgrade/upgrade with root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2726868

You can tell it's not GPE by how horrifically ugly it is, and the TouchWiz thing on the left side of the screen.
To be sure he can run the phone info app and see what it says for bootloader: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vndnguyen.phoneinfo
Lol hey just making sure. I'm still on MDK and usually the Kot49h I see are GE ROMs. Might as well use that app and make sure that's all

KOT49H is Samsung's official build prefix for all Kitkat for our S4 (incl GPE and normal TW).
I agree though, no harm using the app to make sure.

Yea I'm assuming its all stock..he stopped rooting his phones a while ago. So essentially I have root and touch whiz Roms. Are the touch whiz Roms for this phone as customizable as if the bootloader was unlocked? If that's even related lol..on my s3 I've been running MOAR which is actually awesome.
Thanks for all the help..one more question..what's this whole safestrap thing?

info in safestrap thread...its a recovery for those who have a locked bootloader so you can run compatible custom roms
Been reading but haven't found a "clear" path..seems there are different options for going back to the old bulid..and then rooting and getting back to NC5..
A little confused on the order of everything regarding safestrap and rooting

If you want root, that's your only option. Partial downgrade to MK2, root, safestrap 3.72, and flash a pre-rooted NC5 in safestrap.

OK so I safestrap before going back to NC5...so is there ant advantage of going back to NC5? Compared to staying on MK2
