I can send messages and calls but I can't receive. I'm running cyanogen mod 11. This happened once before and I had to flash back to tw and then reflash cyanogen. It seems like I can't update my scms number (not sure if that's the exact acronym.) any way to fix without wiping and reflashing?

I think your answer resides in the OP, though I'm not too familiar with AOSP roms, I do know that a lot of updates have hit, and the firmware registers with the towers.
Likely have to update on TouchWiz to the latest.
Perhaps someone else that uses those roms can chime in.

This thread should give you a starting-point. You may also try the AOSP threads. Remember, this is a starting point; I have no idea what base you were on prior to flashing your AOSP rom (MJ4, NAB, NC5), but this was someone using AOSP CM11 and started with MJ4. Please tread with caution.
Good luck!

Im currently on ME7 / Safestrap on Bean's Build 7.
I know lots of folks are all over the board on ME7, MI1, and MJ7.
I know MJ7 isnt compatible with safestrap yet, so I dont think thats correct. Is the update to MI1 worth going through? IIRC its compatible with safestrap, what ROM is best for MI1? I've read that Eclipse is nice.
Also, I havent dabbled in kernels with this phone yet. Is there a way to to kernels in SS?

My advice is to stay on me7 a little while longer. Right now all the roms for touch wiz are built on it. I believe you can flash the different radios in safestrap but read that thread to be sure. The links for the radios are in general.

Thanks for the reply. Ill stick with ME7. I didnt really want to work on flashing anything else tonight anyway.
Are the bootloaders the same throughout the basebands? If different, would one be potentially unlocked before later ones?
And lastly, do you know what nonhlos is? I don't. I probably dont need it, but I would like to be enlightened. Google turned up nothing when I searched for it. Well, not nothing. But I couldnt find what I was looking for.

Well the baseband is different from the bootloader. Baseband is just the radio. As to one being more likely to be unlocked? I suspect if the crack one the same exploit will work on the others. But maybe not.
I'm not sure about nonhlos either. I be seen no definitive answer. Surge might be able to answer. He seems to know the answer but have not seen him share it. Maybe he'll see this and do it. Oh and seen your questions about kernels. Right now in SS you can't flash any custom kernels. Waiting for a kexec exploit.
Well there is this about non hlos.

Thanks again. Baseband=radio. Got it. Now why are the roms "built" according to their names? Is it just referring to the TW build that was in the OTA with that radio?
Sorry, I have a lot to learn. Spent some time on iPhones and a lot of time on AOSP where I didn't pay much attention to these things.

I've searched forums and seen a few ppl ask but haven't seen an answer yet. I'm wondering how clean the OTA update to Hyperdrive rls13 is with safestrap? I have a Verizon S4 with MK2 and safestrap 3.71.
Thanks in advance for the help!
How clean? It's clean of course. Details can be found in the ROM's thread.

So I've searched the ROM's thread, the safestrap thread, and the general forums. Like I said, I've seen multiple people ask about it, but no one has replied. While I appreciate expecting people to have done a forum search, I have done this. I know safestrap is a little bit different than a S4 MDK bootloader.
What I have seen is replies from people who have done the upgrade from scratch and clearing their ROM slots first. I'm sure this works fine. I'm asking about something a bit different.

The rom itself is very smooth no issues for me at all... I installed to a previously used slot via sstrap3.71 after clearing data cache etc. Are you wanting to know if you can lack of better terms dirty flash personally I just back up, wipe then istall.
My question is, I guess, if you can do the OTA upgrade in one step? Is that just a download of the ROM then u need to flash it yourself? Or does it simply upgrade to RLS13 and keep your data and work smoothly with that method. Most people it seems do a clean ROM install for the upgrade as opposed to OTA.

to me, this is the only way ever to install any ROM. Download to computer, verify MD5 of the DL and copy over to extsd card. Reduces the risk of a bad install........just saying, there are reasons some of us NEVER have an installation issue on any ROM
Hi guys,

The stock kernel doesn't allow it. You can only use the stock kernel with Safestrap. So, no over/under clocking.

I believe those settings only work for a phone with an unlocked bootloader. Those are settings best left alone unless you know what you're doing.
You can mess with some settings on the stock kernel but you shouldn't, Samsung uses a special hotplugging governor dependent on a lot more factors then your usual custom kernel, so unless you really know kernels inside and out then you'll only hinder your kernel. The app will also show you that you changed settings in the stock kernel that really can't be changed.

It's been my experience that any developer worth his salt is using a kernel as customized for his ROM as he can make it. He might not get it exactly right the first time or two out the door, but he will get it right.

Unfortunately, several people seem to think that Safestrap allows them to flash custom kernels.
Well, in one sense, that's true. You can flash a custom kernel on a MK2/MJ7 phone. When the flash completes, you've bricked your phone and set the warranty void flag. But it did flash, right?

Once I knew that... and they were able to root the Jelly Bean updates... I jumped in and did the deed myself.
Maybe if they were to sticky a "what you need to know, read this first" thread at the very top of each of the forums, it might cut down on the redundant questions.

HI all anyone can help me with my phone freezing every 5 mins and then i have to pull the battery or hold the power down to reset it. this started after i installed kitkat and i followed the installation to the letter T and my basband still has MJ4 in it as well and Software Version i am unsure if this has anything to do with it. I have taken steps from which i thought were the problem and have not been successful at all i have installed three different versions of kitkat and still get the same results as well as the Baseband and the Software version does not change even with me installing a kitkat boot loader and all kitkat components that are available at the moment. does anyone know where i can find kitkat modem/firmware i see the firmware but no modem.
I would go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2657447 and flash that thru Odin so it gives you everything firmware....etc then root if you are wanting to be rooted
Did you have any luck fixing the freezing? Im having the same issue.

No, I just called sprint and complained that I did a update and now my phone freezes randomly and I was not going to sit in a sprint store for 2 hours and that I had better things to do so don't waste my time telling me to go to the sprint store . So she sent me another note3.. With kitkat pre installed. .

I think it's great that @rlmiller provides instructions, but I kindly ask that you avoid linking to instructions that are tethered to one specific rom. These Q&A threads are from folks whom need tailored help, and I highly encourage providing that help.
Linking a user whose aim is to upgrade to TouchWiz KitKat to one specific rom draws the user towards one something in lieu of many possibilities.
I've written at least 3 such instructions in the last 2 nights, equally detailed, and specific to the user.
I'd think it better for all development if the question were answered or linked to same, unfettered by a specific rom.

What is build is your bootloader? Flash the corresponding non-hlos modem and see if that helps. If not then probably either try a different ROM or a No Wipe Odin image.
