I've been having issues where I will make a call or receive a call and the other person can't hear me. It doesn't happen every call which is strange. The microphone works in Google Now and other apps.
I'm on the new firmware 4.13 and currently running Viper 4.0.0 though the issue started earlier when I was running Sin's Sense 5.5 rom. Before switching to Viper 4.0, I re-ran the firmware zips from Capt which wiped my internal sd and did a full wipe, but that didn't seem to help. I have not done the official HTC Ruu yet. I do not use PCs at home so I've not had access to a stable PC yet. That is the next thing on my list to try but I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar.
I've tried cleaning the microphone holes, both the one at the bottom and the one at the top. It happens some times and not others which makes it hard to track down.
Thanks for any help!
Your mic is probably beginning to fail. The same thing happened to my first Evo LTE that I purchased. The entire process took about 2-3 months. Eventually, it might stop working completely.
While I'm not saying that this is definitely the case for you, it is very likely, as I had the same experience. Reflashing your firmware should be the first step, then run a RUU if the firmware flash doesn't help. If not, you might need a new phone, buddy.
My main advice is to activate Sprint TEP insurance from now ($5 per month), if you dint have any. Depending on the problem, they replace your device for free. But you can't enter Sprint with the problem.

Thanks! As this problem has been happening more often in the past few weeks, I bit the bullet last night and ordered a M8. Darn, I just had to upgrade... hehe
But your comment does touch on another question I had. I guess Sprint still offers more than one level of insurance? I used to have the full TEP for $11 per month, but cancelled it after I was due for a new phone. I bought the M8 and added it back on, but with HTC's new screen replacement policy, I'm wondering if I should try to downgrade the full TEP to something smaller, and less $ per month. Is there still a lower tier?
I have the same issue on my Evo but I think mine is related to the bottom of the frame not being fully connected to the phone (brother dropped it a lot). Anyone think that could be the issue?

So, I guess I will be returning to Sprint today to exchage my photon yet again. This will be my 3rd time taking my phone back. I upgraded from an Evo that never gave me one problem and it was my rooting/flashing/hacking guinea pig.
My first phone had a screen glitch and would look fuzzy after it warmed up from normal use. This one has been shutting down on me after it sits idle for a few minutes. I will use it for a while and it fine. I set it down and come back a few minutes later and its off and wont boot. I have to pull the battery on this thing 10 times a day. However, if I have it docked or I am using it everything is fine. I have recently flashed the new update and rooted hoping that would help but it hasnt.
Crazy to think I have had 2 phones both with problems and my buddy hasnt had a single problem with his.
Sounds like a bad batch or one heck of a coincidence. Mabe try getting Sprint store to order you a new replacement instead of getting another one from their current inventory. When the Photon works properly it's a great phone. Regardless Sprint will make it right.
Yeah, I cant complain about Sprints service so far and I do like the phone regardless of the problems I have had. I just hope the bugs get worked out and it gets as much support as the Evo. I was so disappointed with the 3D, which is why I went with the Photon.
My sister had a similar problem with the Moment, she too had it replaced 3 times, the forth one worked fine. One of my EVO's 4G had the infamous charging port disconnect/breakage issue and had to be replaced as well. So far the Photon is okay except the call bug, but thats no longer a problem after doing the steps outlined in the development section. Hope you get a good replacement.
TS
Sounds like you need to go to another sprint store

Had the Photon for 29 days, installed the Maintenance Release 5 and continued to have the no audio on calls and random reboot issues. Based on the actions of the phone the last few days that I had it I came to a few conclusions.
When the no audio happened if I hit the mute button the audio would be there and I could hear the call just fine. I noticed that after a no audio call if I attempted to go into call history and click the person who just called and attempted to call the phone would always reboot. This lead me to conclude ( and I would appreciate it if someone who post some thoughts ) that no audio indicates the software has encountered problems and is no longer stable. The actions of the buttons are reversed and the system is on the verge of crashing. Any further action after the call will result in a system reboot. This leads me to believe the OS is prone to not being stable for whatever reason. Why this occurs is unknown.
I noticed that when the phone was flat on my desk, sometimes hooked up to power source, sometimes not, the phone would reboot on it's own. This indicated that even without user intervention the phone OS would become unstable, crash and reboot. What causes this is unknown.
I have since returned the phone to Sprint for a full refund with no restocking fee ( I suspect their technician was able to duplicate the no audio).
While the phone was fast, had a lot of storage space, great reception and great clarity the unstable OS caused me to return it.
Sounds like a hardware problem. I have yet to have a reboot and after the update, I have yet to get a muted call.

There are two problems at hand here, user error and malfunctioning hardware. You should know full well that if you are having issues such as rebooting upon laying the phone down with a charger that something isn't soldered properly in the phone. Swapping it would alleviate this issue. With the final build (CM5) being available in SBF form, along with two very stable and powerful roms, very few people are having any issues of updated properly. It's unfortunate to see another user put this phone down instead of working through the issues, but I guess android isn't for everyone.

User error? Really? Note I said I had the CM5 installed and still had the no audio issues. And since when does having the action of the mute button on a call being reversed happen as a result of something not being soldered properly? Note that the reboot happened when the phone was on the charger and when it was not. When it was laying flat and when I was holding it upright and looking through the contact list. I like Android just fine. Had an Evo for a year but upgraded because it lacked internal storage space. I plan on going to the Galaxy SII in a few weeks and last I read that's an Android phone.

What he means is that you didn't even bother to have sprint replace this phone for you. You settled, thinking it was a software problem. Which any user here would most likely come to the conclusion after reading your post that it wasn't. Random reboots like that would have sent me back directly to the sprint store demanding another phone. Companies make bad batches, and stores get those bad batches. The fact is you just settled for a phone that was working sub par. I have gone through 3 phones, all with different problems, but I don't settle. They give you that 30 days for a reason.
Would you do the same thing had you went to best buy and bought a computer from them that did the same thing? Random reboots, no sound, etc etc....
Mine as well as most others phones on here work perfect, maybe the random force close from an app or something, but I don't get any muted calls, random reboots, and if I did you better bet I wouldn't settle for it.
Good luck to you in Samsung land.

funny...Ive had no problems before or after the ota...the phone is stable as a rock...call quality is outstanding, no dropped calls like my old EVO..but im not sure the issues is random hardware problems per phone
This is killing me as I real think the photon hardware wise is one the all around best out...
Moto need to get off over their attuned about software... officially unlock the dam phone release the dam Kernel asap and let great independent software talent write and fix bugs for great hardware and so so code
Just do not think Moto puts the time in on thier code that then need too...
The only problem I've had with this phone was no audio a few times. After updating to 45.2.5, that problem has now been resolved. Photon is running like a champ.

I did get a replacement phone and I experienced the same symptoms on both of them.
I do have information that confirms that Motorola was aware of the reboots and that MR5 was supposed to fix this. I did have MR5 on here.
I had an atrix before having this and put Alien Build 4. I was floored by the battery life and the ROM and device was rock solid.
I have a brick at the moment. This became a brick after rebooting loop similar to not wiping the davlik cache before a boot. It was stock. I was going to unlock and root to see if it helped the battery life.
I had been more excited about this phone than almost any other one. I have been a beta tester of Motorola devices, but I believe this one may have been pushed out the door a little too early.
I am glad people have this working well and I am glad for them. I will still love this phone even though I have experienced issues. It easily could have been a bad batch that is triggered by certain circumstances.
After the update - my silent call issue was 100% fixed. Maybe you need to a do a factory reset? I do that after all major OS updates.

I never had anything I couldn't recover from ODIN even a partial flash(or even if it reset before it could finish flashing). I rooted both Epic 4G and Droid Charge with Odin. Just flashed a couple of Samsung Moments last week but they didn't require ODIN.
My phone will boot sometimes so it won't even stay booted. Doesn't matter what I do to it.
Djspinister - It will boot but not stay booted, it just reboots. I haven't ever had a bad flash that I couldn't recover from. I have flashed Windows Mobile devices, iOS devices that were eventually jailbroken. I have flashed several times right before going out to eat dinner only to have it fully recovered before the food came out. This just has to be a bad phone. It is a brick phone.

After reading on numerous other sites of people on their 3rd or 4th Photon and still suffering from the same problem I decided not to bother. As for Samsung, before the Evo I had two Samsung products that were absolute rocks for me. Solid with no issues and performed well. Using a Samsung Instinct right now.
My Photon is 100% trouble free. Calls are clear, battery lasts, etc.
Te only real issue is that I do not love the bluish tint on the LCD. Anyone know how to alter the gamma?

I upgraded from an EVO on Friday. My new Photon began crashing and doing the no audio on Saturday. I exchanged it at the Sprint store later that day and have had no issues with the second Photon. I really like the Photon much better than the EVO.
Has no one else been told in the Sprint store that you can only exchange once and then you're stuck with the device???? They told me they only allow future exchanges through warranty (i.e., Motorola will ship me a new one...no in-store exchanges).
Is this just wrong information?

Thats BS!!!! e-mail me at [email protected] and I will send YOU the e-mail I sent Sprint. Not only did I get my 3rd phone, my bill is cleared until October!!! The girls name and number will be in my e-mail!
This weekend I upgraded to the Photon 4G for $99 at Best Buy (gotta love Labour day weekend offers).
I'm moving from an HTC Evo 4G. The first problem is the worst. Since picking up the Photon 4G I have had to pull the battery 5 times as the phone refuses to wake... With the HTC if I had an issue I could reboot by holding down the power and volume button, but the Photon doesn't seem to have this feature, so I'm forced to remove the back cover and pull the battery...
I don't seem to be able to re-create the issue. Its just happens without notice... Anyone else having this issue? Is their an easier way to coax the phone back to life rather than pulling the battery?
The second issue is the screen. Every single review I have read has said that the screen is a Photon 4G strong point... I'm not convinced... Yes it is bright and vivid, but I seem to have an annoying grey criss cross pattern all over the screen. I'm not sure if its my eye's (the GF says she can see it too) but I was expecting the screen to look better than both my EVO and Xoom... This annoying grey criss cross gauze (especially visible on white backgrounds) is disappointing..
What do others think? Colour gradients also appear to band very easily, rather than being smooth.. I'm not sure if this is a result of compression in pictures tho...
Other than that, I am happy with the phone. Big improvement over the EVO 4G i had befor, just a screen I have to get used too, and this un-responsive issue to fix...
Oh, and having to get used to Motorola's Android button layout and Standard Android icon changes is a little painful at times...
Swap out for new one for wake problem. Turn brightness down to 30 percent and screen is fine. Had all top HTC phones and this beats all.....keep this phone....

I get that sometimes, but fail to replicate at the store. Store employees will only recommend to wipe the phone.
The pentiles pixelation is only noticeable when your face is extremely close to screen. Its a cell phone not a tv display lol, stop holding it so close and you'll be fine! Im on my first phone with no issues yet; just to be on the safe side i would swap for a new device.

Actually, the sale has been going on for close to 3 weeks now. Sorry you are having issues, have you tried a factory reset then not install any apps (or not many) for a couple days to see if it was one of them?
An opinion......
I try to avoid the Sprint stores as much as possible. There are some knowledgeable reps out there but it is a small percentage. Most of them don't know much about the devices. Call the Sprint support number first and try troubleshooting with them. In my experience, they are better at going the distance to make the customer happy than the peeps in the stores especially if you keep on them about it.
Sounds like a swap out is needed. Good luck.
Go back to BB and try to swap it out for another one. Had my photon for about 3 weeks now and never had this issue
I have to agree it sounds like a hardware issue and merits a swap. I've had the photon 2 1/2 weeks and have only had to pull the battery once.
Mine has been freezing and needing a battery pull every day. I went through Sprint VIA phone and they sent me to the store. The Technician actually researched it and it is a know software issue that will be fixed when the next OTA software update is released. I went from the silent call issues to my phone turning off/freezing and I don't even know that its not working. Not happy at all right now
I've just got back from Best buy after my phone refused to wake up again for the second time today.... I let them try and get it turned back on again which they couldn't do without pulling the battery... Either way they immediately confirmed they'd swap it out. Until she went to pull one and realised they are all out
My replacement arrives Friday when they get restocked.... Best Buy must have sold loads since Friday because their shelf was piled pretty high when i picked mine up...
So hopefully the new one will work properly, or maybe I'm just plagued until the next OTA...
As to everyone who gave me suggestions about the screen... you were right. Turning down the screen brightness pretty much solved the issue all together and I think I am officially used to it now...
Just wish i could get my EVO 3D ringtone , Alarm and notifications on the Motorola. I grew more attached to them, than I thought

OK, I did not think that it could be my SD card causing the issues with the phone freezing up and needing a battery pull to get it back on but the Technician asked me if it was a new card or from another phone. I said It was from two or three phones ago. They said that I should format the card because the files from the older phones can cause problems such as this, after copying my photos over to the computer to be able to put back on the card afterwards of course. They had left my SD card out of the phone. So to test things, I haven't put my SD card back in since two days ago. My phone has not restarted or frozen up once. I will give it some more time and report back, but in the mean time, until there is an OTA fix, if you are using an SD card from another (previous) phone, and your having the freezing/power down/restart issues, you may want to give formatting your SD card or removing it to test if it fixes the problem a shot. Good luck, so far so good.
I've not used an SD card at all since purchasing my Photon. On the Plus side, it has not stopped working at all so far today
Had the same problem when I bought my 2nd photon this time at best buy becuase of the $99 deal.
On the 1st one i got directly from a sprint corp store, no issues at all. But this one on the 1st day I got a reboot issue. second day got the SOD. went in they had some trouble getting it on. Had to tell them to take the batt out and it went on. My problem was that they had none available. so for 3 days I waited.
Funny thig is that I wasn't getting the SOD again. Just didn't want to chance it so got another one, yesterday. Happy today.
There were no motorola photon availble in my area. So they are selling.
Good luck with yours.
OK it's not the sd card causing the issues. It's back to freezing up 1-9 times per day and then I need to do a battery pull and restart the phone. Motorola wants the phone back to repair it. This should be a great Two weeks and if the phone is not fixed, I will lose it........ For sure

Ok, if this information is correct from Sprint, I know why I am having all these problems with mine freezing up and after having done several hard resets and many calls to Sprint and a visit to the service center with no fix. Apparently there was a batch of Photons that got shipped with corrupt firmware. When the phone uses that portion of the firmware, as a safe mode, it freezes. There is no fix other than replacement with a non effected phone. They ordered me a new one, that I will get on Tuesday. The only way they can correct it until there is an OTA patch is to send it back to Motorola. Wish me luck with this one
Update....
So here is the update....
5 Days of Ownership - A total of 9 shutdowns of the phone with the only way to get it turned back on again was by pulling the battery. On the 9th time, I went directly to Best Buy to show them. They agreed without question to replace it. Unfortunately they had sold out so I had to wait 2 more days for the next shipment. Gotta say Best Buy were excellent tho. I had 1 further shutdown before getting my brand new replacement.
3 Days of brand new replacement Photon 4G ownership - I am disappointed to say that I have had 1 shutdown so far and this was on the second day. Not sure if I want to Jinx myself but the shutdown rate is lower in the first 3 days than it was with my original.
But it's looking more and more like it's a bug in software than hardware. Either that or I get the DUD from two completely separate batches of phones.

Well, I got my brand new replacement yesterday at the Milton Massachusetts Sprint Repair Center and as of yet no shut-down, or freeze-ups. I have my fingers crossed here on this one. If not I will be reprogramming another new one soon. They did assure me that this is not affecting every Photon, but there was a large batch released with this corrupt firmware. Its like a waiting game to see if its a dud or not. I do love this phone, and I am getting tired of setting up these phones over and over again, but on a good note, I can completely customize my phone and all my apps in about thirty minutes from activation
I searched signal loss, and dropped signal but could not find a thread that matched my problem. I have found some people with similar problems through google search but I haven't seen any fixes.
Here we go...
I got my first atrix BRAND NEW in July. It ran perfect! Updated to GB, factory reset it and everything was working great. Couple weeks later it started doing random restarts. It got to the point where it would lock up at the M logo for 10-20 min or sometimes even constantly so I would have to pull the battery. It got so bad that I had to take it in for warranty. I had this phone for over a month with NO signal problems what so ever.
I get the 1st remanufactured Atrix and it is dropping signal left and right. I called up ATT and jumped through their hoops, turned it off, let them mess with it, factory reset it and NOTHING. Still had the same problem, would go from 3 bars to 4 bars then it will drop signal and the red circle will show up. probably happens about 5 times per minute.
They tell me to take it back, so I oblige. I go up to the warranty center and they give me a new sim card and say that should fix it.... NOPE, Still doing the same exact thing so I take it back up there again. The give me another(#2) remanufactured phone. I finish the setup and guess what... Still have a worthless signal and it is dropping out a lot.
For reference, signals on the first two replacement atrix's are running anywhere from 84dbm up to 120dbm and hangs most of the time around 96dbm.
I am now on my FOURTH remanufactured Atrix(5th overall) and still having the same problem. ATT are being total douche nozzles as they will not release me from my contract. I have spent over 30 hours dealing with them on this problem thus far and I am getting extremely tired of it.
Just for reference, my Wife has an I4 and she is not experiencing any of these problems. I also travel a lot and I experience the same problem in Dallas(home), Midlothian(hour south of Dallas), Washington DC, Tennessee, Virginia and Maryland among other places. I am pretty sure this is a software glitch since it happens wherever I am.
I have a home office and work from home. I told ATT that if this was happening with my original BRAND NEW Atrix that I would have taken it back in a heartbeat. There is not a chance I would deal with losing data and dropping signal for over a month with a brand new phone.
So, my question I guess is this. If this is a software problem, would it be best to try and root and see if that fixes it? Or will that not change a problem like this. The remanufactured phones came with 2.3 installed while my first one had 2.2 and I had to upgrade it myself. Is there a way I can remove 2.3 from this phone and reinstall it to see if that fixes it? I am completely open to suggestions as I have run out of options.
I know exactly what you mean. I also had 3-4 *new* atrixs right from att. (Around late July) Every time instead of addressing the problems, they just gave me a new device. Eventually I decided to root and unlock my bootloader. BEST decision that I could have made. As soon as I installed a different ROM it was as if I had a new device. I was about to exchange it for a different device and now I'm really glad that I didn't. For the signal issues I would try flashing a new radio to see if that helps at all.

My first atrix was like that and it was a refurbished one. On my 2nd, it is completely fine. I think you should tell them to send you NEW atrix instead of a refurb.
that sounds like really terrible luck. i a agree, i think it would help a lot if you rooted your phone and installed some custom rom. although there may be truth with what Semseddin and might actually still be something awry with the refurbs

Unfortunately I have tried to get them to send me a new phone but they will not do it. I tried several times, even talked to the managers about it and nothing.
What is ridiculous is that when my first phone crashed I was only like 14 days past the return period where I could have received a NEW Atrix. I tried explaining this too them and they would not do anything to help me. I have been with Cingular/ATT for over 10 years and they obviously didn't care.
I think i will just try a new rom and see how that goes.
Hmm..well if you've absolutely made up ur mind on rooting ur phone and installing custom roms then i would recommend u to use the DarkSide ROM since it seems to have most of the fixes u need (including the signal loss..See ChangeLog for more)
Also, if u've already tried Randomverll's idea of flashing a new radio and still it didn't help, it may be a hardware problem..anyway try flashing a new rom and see
Hi, I've scoured the forums here looking to see if anyone else had this problem. I found an old thread started back in May, but I am concerned with firmware 2.13.651.1 (the latest OTA). Since installing this update my phone now restarts 3-4 times per day, usually while idle sitting untouched on my desk. I hear a "buzz", look over and my phone is on the HTC startup screen. No rhyme or reason, just a completely random restart.
A little history, I had this problem OOB with version 1.13.651.1, it went away with OTA #1 - 1.22.651.3 (which had it's own problems, including lockup/overheating 3-4 times a day) and it returned with OTA #2 - 2.13.651.1. I am HTC Unlocked and have SuperSU/BusyBox installed, however I doubt those are my issue. Obviously I am running stock ROMs.
I've tested by doing a complete factory reset and letting the phone sit there idle on the startup wizard. Within hours it had restarted itself despite being untouched. I don't see a huge number of folks complaining about this issue here, so it must be hardware, yes? Do you think I got a bum unit?
I had this happen once today.. this is my second day on the new kernel.do not know if it was a fluke or related to your issue

That is definitely not normal. You may want to relock and take it into Sprint. I have never experienced a reboot and I've had my phone since launch week. Or try a custom roms like MeanRom and see if you have better luck. You're already upgraded to the new base so you can just download and flash it.

Yep. I'm on EVO LTE #5. Strange part 2 and 4 did not have reboots. 1,3 and 5 do. Drives me nuts and sprint techs are clueless. With the lastest update it gives you a log of exactly why it had the errors. Yesterday I brought the log to the sprint repair and he said it was meant for HTC, not them.
I'm otherwords, he had no clue on how to read the log.
I'm hoping they fix this crap soon..they will not replace the phone anymore yet they can't fix it. I hate Sprint
Edit. Mine is stock, have not had one working good, long enough to root

Well, I took it into Sprint and yes they were clueless. Best they could offer me was to flash me back one version to the one the had blank notifications and overheated. I declined and went to HTC. They immediately issued an RMA. While I am not excited to get a refurb unit, I certainly am fed up with the constant reboots. Good thing I kept my old EVO 3D just in case.
FYI, I sent it back to HTC unlocked (but not S-OFF). I like to live dangerously.
