If I open Odin with my device plugged in, the yellow box appears and all as if I were in Download Mode.
Just interested - would it actually be possible to do flashes from here?
Too scared to try myself - I've already hard-bricked my phone once because of a corrupt ROM.

No. You must boot into download mode.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
If i remember it correctly, it will stuck at setup connection.
Trying to flash a ROM while the device is booted will be about as successful as trying to perform a triple bypass on yourself. You must be in download mode to use Odin because the ROM cannot be loaded and replaced simultaneously.

I doubt you bricked your phone unless it had to get repaired via JTAG or mobo replaced. There is no such thing as a soft/hard brick no matter what anybody on here tells you, your device is either "bricked" or it isnt. You more then likely just did bad flash and couldn't work out how to re-flash correctly, its extremly common for newbies to "think" they have bricked tehir phone when in fact all they have done is screw system up.
Anyway to answer your question no you cant flash rom over current rom while the current rom is already loaded/booted, thats just common sense and a bit of a silly question really.
However there is a mobile version of ODIN called "Mobile Odin" which is available from market which will enable you to flash files like Odin does but via your phone. You load the program up choose files and it reboots into its own recovery and flashed that way.
Mobile Odin is available in Google Play.
NO,you hv to boot in to download mode first

I know about Mobile Odin - the only reason I asked was because I was intrigued. I thought clicking Start would reboot in Download Mode and do the flash, but obviously not
I did brick my phone (it would not boot up, only got a little hot, jig didn't work, three button combo didn't work) so I sent it off to Samsung and they repaired it.
Hello,
Yesterday I've checked my Galaxy S3 only to find it stuck on the logo screen, which was weird since it was working fine minutes prior to that moment. I've tried booting it into recovery mode, but the same thing appears, only this time it flashes the logo, then goes black again, then flashes it again, and so on. It can, however, go into download mode. So I've tried connecting it to Kies, and doing the firmware upgrade, but it won't recognize my phone and it fails. I've tried re-flashing the ROM via Odin, several versions of it, but it says that the partition information is missing, or something along the lines of that. I've tried re-partitioning it with the .pit file, but it failed. So then I downloaded the Galaxy S3 unified toolkit, uninstalled Kies, installed the drivers from there, but the phone doesn't get recognized in the list of devices. I've tried several other USB ports and other cables, no change. It doesn't show up as an Android device in Device manager. Perhaps the device drivers are missing, so if I can get them for the device, it might get recognized, but I'd like to get some more insight and help on this while I'm trying out other options.
Some google searching has led me to find that this is a known issue and called a bootloop and is apparently fixable, but I'm stuck for two days now, and I'd really need to get it fixed ASAP. Any help at all is appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Had the same issue. Had to download & flash *.bin file through ODIN which did the trick and enabled me to boot into recovery. I can tell you the *.bin file name when I get home later today.

As a matter of fact it is. What does that entail?
Here's what the download mode says:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME:
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: No
CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official
SYSTEM STATUS: Custom
It was running 4.1.2. before the incident happened, I forgot to mention that.
It means your emmc chip is damaged and you cannot fix it with software.
If you have any remaining warranty then I suggest you contact samsung, this problem is known as partial sds.

hey,
i got the same problem. i can only get into download mode. normal boot ends in white screen with grey lines.
but my product name is still there. can anybody give a fix for that problem? i am frustrated...have searched for a long while but i am from germany so its much harder too find something helpful
thanks you!!!
Hopefully, Someone can help me with my problem. I've been searching the internet for about a month now trying to find a solution. Obviously, I can't figure it out. Anyways, from what I remember, I rooted my note 2 with Kingroot and then afterwards, I tried to flash a custom rom with odin. After I tried, it wouldn't load. No problems there. I was about to get back onto stock. Upon doing more research, I tried to flash a new recovery onto my Note 2. This is where all my problems started. Odin failed during the flashing process and now I can't get into my recovery menu. I'm stuck on the screen that says "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in kies and try again." I tried connecting my phone to Kies but it won't recognize my phone. I know I have the drivers installed because I was using odin before all this happened. Anyways, I've seen threads where people say flash a stock rom using odin. But this doesn't do anything for me because odin doesn't pick up my phone anymore. I will also note that I've tried 7 different USB cables with odin as I know that is a common problem with odin not recognizing devices.
Yesterday, I was doing more research and I learned that I needed to unlock my bootloader before flashing anything and this is the source of all my problems with this phone. Now if only the tutorial I was using had mentioned this, that would have been great.
Please someone tell me that there is a solution to this problem and I don't have a fully bricked phone.
I should also note that I'm able to get into Odin Mode on my phone. Here is all the information it gives me.
Product Name: SCH-I605
Current Binary: Samsung Official
System Status: Custom
RP SWREV: A3

You just need to flash a stock firmware rom, either 4.1.2 or 4.2.2 via odin to restore your phone back to normal if you can get into download mode. For odin to recognize your device, plug in your phone, open device manager and delete the Android usb phone connection, unplug and re-plug back in so the drivers can install again. Odin has a problem of recognizing the phone the second time of using it, i am not sure why tho, that is a repeated step if your using odin multiple times (maybe a windows 7 thing, i dn).
S6 edge stuck on opening logo of "Samsung galaxy S6 edge" - it's not mine, so I can't know the history that caused it - but I think it's related to a bad try of rooting.
when trying to flash a new stock firmware from Sammobile getting the same problem - even after wipe and wipe cache.
on recovery getting this messege on the bottom:
dm-verity vertification failed... need to check DRK first...
this is what I tried to do to fix it:
1) flashed newest stock - still no do.
2) tried to flash with smart switch - it did flash - but it didn't help - phone still in bootloop.
3) flashed S6-UniKernel_v6-0001-ODIN or S6-UniBase_BOG8_v2 - it did helped, the phone worked, but I lost the IMEI and needed a certificate to fix the IMEI, I did it and the phone works fine..... BUT I can't left it with a custom rom 'cause I want the original updates and the original stock rom.
4) tried to flash the repair firmware G925FXXU1AOCV (comes with 4 files CSC, AP, MODEM and BOOTLOADER) which is 5.0.1, so it fails (tried also with pit file) - didn't do.
5) last thing I'm willing to try - is to split a new firmware to CSC MODEM BOOTLOADER and AP by myself... the only problem is - I don't actually know how to do it.
another thing I've noticed on the download mode it is written:
Current Binary: samsung Official and System status: custom
I was wonder if someone can give me a clue what to do, and how to fix this problem.
thanks!
What country are you from? Are you sure the phone isn't on 5.1.1??
Download the firmware from sammobile of your own country or the nearest country/countries, put the device in Odin mode and try to flash that one through Odin "AP" Okay "IF IT FAILS" (copy the Odin log and paste it on this thread. If it succeeds LET US KNOW PLEASE.
Be sure of the Android version.. If that's impossible my safe bet is to flash it with a rom for 5.1.1
You shouldn't mess with the PIT files!

hey,
first of all, thanks for the replay!
If I flashed with smartswitch - then it should flash the newest rom and the one who fits for the device.
what I flashed in odin is: G925FXXU3COJ1_G925FOJK3COJ3_G925FXXU3COJ6_HOME.tar
which is Israeli firmware and 5.1.1

Please give me all info you have about your device and the current condition of the device (please be clear about what you can do with the device now and how you get to a certain menu such as Recovery/OdiDLmode/Smartswitch/Bootloop*kind of bootloop.)
Hope to be of good help.

Hi thanks,
have no idea about unikernel and have not tried anything with unikernel,
read someting about this somewhere else too,, something about the kernel not even loading cud be a problem?
phone is a galaxy s6 edge SM-G925F
was working fine and apparently on hungarian XEH firmware but not sure if it was on 5.02 or 5.1.1 when 16 year old kid did something or the other with it to put into bricked state.
have no idea of its previous info or condition as it was handed to me in a bricked state
only thing i can do with device is get into download mode and flash via odin...
have never ever been able to get it into recovery mode ever !!!! not even after any successful flashing
I can flash many stock files either the single tar files or either the 4 part multifirmware files
Can do flash and emergency recovery firmware through samsung smartswitch
but no matter what flash if its odin stock firmware flash or samsung smartswitch flash have never seen recovery and always can never get past the white samsung galaxy edge 6 with powered by android in white at bottom too
after succesful flashes in odin cant get out of download mode if auto reboot is ticked, only way out is to hold vol down and power. or get back into download mode then vol down to cancel/restart,
phone just never gets past that white message screen, sometimes that message will splash across screen continuouly like its turning on and off...like some sort of bootloop.... depending how i try to power/boot the phone back up again
and then sometimes it will just stay on the screen forever lit up and frozen/hanging...
strange thing that is happening now if you look at the last few attempts of flashing the 4 part multi firmware file and ticking re-partition to fix the pit files...
once i turn phone off out of download mode.... i cant power the phone/boot it up using just the power on button.
normally i assume to start the phone or turn phone on all u would need to do is hold power button.
so if phone is powered down or turned off after flash, power button alone will not turn it back on, have to go back into download mode and restart from there
i hope any of all that makes any sense at all
Here is a question for you.
When the device is OFF and you plug it into your computer, does the device then jump to the Smart Switch screen?
Btw IMPORTANT when you say that you "flash" the device through odin are you referring to the pictures on your thread where the logg states that it failed on "nand write" and once on "hidden.img" or did it actually pass after the complete flashing of all the files "hidden.img" included?
Firstly need to try this; when the device is stuck in the bootloop you have to do this.
It shows you this type of screen (1st)
http://www.pocketpc.ch/attachments/...49759183-s6-edge-bootloop-20151210_155028.jpg
(does it say kernel isn't seandroid enforced?)
Then this 2nd screen shows up
http://zidroid.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Galaxy-S5-Boot-Animation.png
RIGHT after the 2nd screen SAMSUNG LOGO disappears press volume UP, HOME and POWER you need to be VERY FAST.
Then once the (1st) screen pops up again, release the POWER then volume UP and HOME buttons.
Maybe it's possible that it'll jump into recovery, even if it does this is not the solution just a way to diagnose.
Don't worry we'll fix it!

If you have to flash it in any way to get it in a bootloop then the test isn't required! Don't do it.

This is what i gathered for you guys as a possible fix, it would work 100% if you guys didn't mess with EVERYTHING IN ODIN!
Because i have tested it myself several times.
READ EVERYTHING CLEARLY
4# When you mess with an s6 to the point that it does not turn on anymore and it only reacts until you plug it into a computer then it shows a screen "error occurred during update use Smart Switch..."
Well by that point Smart Switch mode partially takes over and you can only flash the device successfully in Smart Switch mode using Odin on the computer NOT Smart Switch.
(this knowledge will be useful later)
!!! PART 1 !!!
Here we go, follow this in detail.
STEP 1. You need to download the original Odin 3.10.6 from XDA here below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3109599&d=1420980613
STEP 2. Download the Kernel below:
http://mirror31.downloadandroidrom....nibase/S6-UniBase_BOG8_v2.tar?token=514002462
STEP 3. Open Odin on your computer as administrator.
STEP 4. Now connect your device to your computer.
STEP 5. Put your device/phone in Odin mode.
(volume down, home and power)
STEP 6. Make sure Odin has detected the device.
STEP 7. Load the Kernel in "AP" and wait 1 minute, then click START.
It should say PASS! However if it does not succeed, reboot the device and try it again in Smart Switch mode.
(It should actually pass the first try if these simple instructions are followed properly)

STEP 1. Download this Firmware below:

STEP 2. Open Odin as administrator.

STEP 4. Put your device/phone into Odin mode.
(volume down, home, power)
STEP 5. Make sure Odin has detected your device.
STEP 6. Load the Firmware in Odin "AP" and WAIT a few minutes UNTIL Odin is done reading the file. THEN CLICK on START and install the Firmware!
!!! IMPORTANT !!!
1st Possibility, if Odin shows "FAIL" "hidden.img" then that's a GOOD THING!
your phone is allmost fixed.
(Let me know if that happens.)
2nd Possibility, if Odin stops at "Nand Write" you must start over, unplug your device make sure it's OFF, then plug it back into the computer in order to boot the DEVICE into SMART SWITCH MODE and then follow the "STEPS 2,3,5,6" again!
DO NOT FOLLOW "STEP 4" Leave the device in SMART SWITCH MODE. (read above "4#")
HOWEVER
If Odin shows "PASS" then DO NOT UNPLUG the DEVICE! Go get yourself a coffee your device should be perfectly fixed!
Just unplug it AFTER A FEW MINUTES and try to switch it on, if it doesn't boot up? All you need to do is replug it into the computer and see if it boots up by itself (this does occur sometimes).

only problem is - the device stuck on the first logo (powered by android).
and on download mode it shows:
Current Binary: samsung Official
System status: custom
and on recovery it shows:
dm-verity vertification failed... need to check DRK first...
I did some research also
http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f77...drk-device-root-key-not-shoving-imei-1991601/
and
http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f684/dm-verity-verification-failed-1974767/
I'm not sure what is this rootkey issue, someone said that it is damaged, therefore it shows the dm verity vertification failure.

I also got the "dm verity vertification failure" today, but with me it happened because I was dumb enough to flash a G920I modem and bootloader on my G925F...
So it also bootlooped and everything, and then just like what you had, it asked me for Smart Switch. But then when I used Smart Switch on it, I got firmware from a totally different country than my own (think it was from Mexico or something), as I live in the Netherlands. And it even asked me for my phone's serial number before Smart Switch went on and flashed that firmware.
So I guess they only look at the CSC or something? Anyway, after that I got it into download mode and immediately flashed the newest correct firmware, and am happily flashing ROM's again Just download your own country's 5.1.1 firmware and you'll be alright, as long as you can get into download mode

yeah... already flashed the newest for my country.. it flashes well but still stuck on logo after.
from some reason after flashing, on DL mode it shows :
Current Binary: samsung Official
System status: custom
so the system status refuses to become official. even after using the smartswitch software.
I think maybe some of the partitions in the eMMC are corrupted.

I think that's because you've tripped knox (hence custom), but you do have official samsung firmware, (hence official).
Edit: Have you checked your kernel?
Btw IMPORTANT when you say that you "flash" the device through odin are you referring to the pictures on your thread where the logg states that it failed on "nand write" and once on "hidden.img" or did it actually pass after the complete flashing of all the files "hidden.img" included?
succesful flashes i mean passes, i can get many many stock files to flash and pass no problem now as wasnt the case when i first got the phone
It shows you this type of screen (1st)
http://www.pocketpc.ch/attachments/s...210_155028.jpg
thats the first screen i can never ever get past
(does it say kernel isn't seandroid enforced?) it doesnt say that... but previously when i was flashing twrp and booted tried booting the phone up it woud say recovery isnat seandroid enforcing, i dont get that no more as i am flashing stock firmwares

I did flash that UniBase kernel and because of this I've lost the Imei number... I had to use Jtag box to recover the Imei.
so Beware when flashing this kernel.
I will try to flash the stock rom from sammobile... Hope it will help.

Greetings all,
I am a real noob and have recently taken to playing with my android devices.
Unfortunately I am in a predicament with my old S3 I9300.
I really screwed up and failed to make a Nandroid back up when using TWRP to flash Cynagenmod 13, after following the correct procedure on my other I9300 and successfully flashing it I became cocky and made the fatal error of not having a back up. A bit of back story but perhaps unrelated it was also suffering the old "Failed to Mount EFS" message which I have recently learnt to fix on my Old Old I9100 S2 using ADB.
After flasing It was in a Cynagenmod boot loop and was not able to be recognized by my pc via download mode or recovery, so was unable to use Odin, Kies or even ADB.
After experiencing USB issues with Cynagenmod 13 on my other I9300 when the flash was successful, I decided that perhaps it would be better to flash Android Revolution as the USB connections just seem to work better. After the flash seemed to be successful and the Samsung Logo just hung around and never booted.
I played with it all day, trying to get Kies, ADB and Odin to recognize it to no avail, (I tried every little trick on Google, reinstall drivers, restart pc , restart device, plug unplug, play with the buttons and the battery etc.....) the thing is, is that Odin would recognize it in bootloop.
After growing tired of this not working, for some stupid reason I decided to flash CWM over TWRP via MicroSD, i just thought maybe I could get ADB to work or something. Anyway the flash worked and I continued to try ADB, KIES and ODIN but nothing.
To make matters worse currently when I try to go to Recovery CWM is now looping (I'm hoping its a passing phase), so with recovery gone my phone is restricted to Download mode. I really think my last chance is to get download mode communicating with Kies to get the Firmware.
Feeling frustrated and about throw my phone on the recycling heap after googling and reading so many XDA threads I decided to reach out and ask for any help or suggestions in finding a way to get my phone recognized in Download Mode.
I thank you for your time in reading this post and look forward to hearing any advice.
Cheers.

Hey Mate,
Firstly we all are noobs here helping each other, secondly from my experience of S3, it is such a device that under any condition, if your hardware is intact, you can recover your phone from almost anything, so yeah you might have a solution to your problem.
Coming to the problem at hand, i had the same thing happen to my S3, (only twrp logo showed, couldn't access recovery, no ROM, only download mode available) the way i fixed it was using odin, now i know you say that odin is not recognizing your device, the thing is firstly Kies is useless in this situation acc. to me, it only works stock ROM and that too with difficulty, what i would say is go here - http://developer.samsung.com/technical-doc/view.do?v=T000000117
and then install the drivers to your PC, next up download the official firmware from sammobile or any other site (careful of the version you are using), now put the phone in download mod, start odin and then connect your phone. Now, hopefully odin will recognize your phone and you can flash the official firmware, also i would recommend to stay on the official firmware for like a week before returning to flashing again as i have noticed that constant flashing and wiping leads to not only errors like "unable to mount EFS" but also serious errors like "Unable to mount /system" or "Unable to mount /Data" ,which clearly sucks
Please try the method and tell me if it worked , if not we'l try something else but we sure as hell will get your device working again
If still not recognized then here is a suggestion :
Exit/uninstall from nokia/ovi suit.
Exit/uninstall bluestack. (if u r using it)
Update your drivers(phone specific)
Use correct odin version acc to ur phone
Sent from my Micromax E352 using XDA-Developers mobile app
I'm just gonna throw my 2 cents in too. I didn't read your whole thread as I'm in a slight rush right now.
But basically -
Can your PC recognise your phone when it's plugged into USB in Download Mode? If so, use ODIN to flash any stock firmware and you're back to square one (working, but stock) phone. Then go from there. Obviously try to flash the right firmware or you'll end up no further forward.
If it can't recognise it, try reinstalling the drivers, uninstalling the programs mentioned above and using another USB cable. My experience with my own S3 has shown potential wear with the USB port on the bottom of the phone presumably due to it's age and as a result it doesn't recognise many USB cables.
