Hi all, i recently scoured these forums searching for the most simple way to achieve recovery on the Xperia S. Of course to no avail to a newbie like myself. My device is rooted and with ICS, with an unlocked bootloader. I initially tried to achieve CWM by using the application on the market (Prior to obtaining root but with unlocked bootloader & ICS). I recently tried to achieve CWM using the CWM - Xperia on the market and success it worked! Simply click the "Reboot into recovery mode" within the application and it will install CWM into the system partition so you can use recovery! I am unsure whether this has been posted recently but i avoided posting it elsewhere due to restrictions and the like, i hope this hasn't been discovered yet and im not just being ignorant to the forum i literally could not find any news of this elsewhere!
If needs be, i will make a guide on how to achieve this including the rooting and flashing steps i took.

Here you go...
Download the attachment!
Unzip using WinRar
Connect your phone in normal mode
Go to the folder you extracted earlyer
Double click on "Install.bat"
Restart your phone
While turning on,at the Sony Boot Logo simply tap a few times the screen!
Now you should have CWM Recovery on your phone!
Simple as that
Hope helps you...
CWM 5 supports the touch screen buttons on the bottom of the phone also. its very easy to use!
Beats audio installed via this method.
On what firmware is that available? This is just a one click method after achieving root.

CWM is some kind like the Bios from your pc...except does not have the same functions
it`s a recovery, where you can backup your rom and restore if something goes wrong with your phone!
with it you can install some custom ROM`s
you can clear cache...dalvik cache....and a lot more to do!
but really the mos usefull function of it is the backup-restore and the flash of different modules rom`s and kernels!
it`s better to have cwn just in case

install Sony PC Comanion first
second check the usb debugging box from {}developer options
then just plug your phone into the usb
after that double click on install.bat
i am on unlocked bootloader
i don`t know if it works with locked bootloader
it should work
another way to install CWM is to flash a kernel wich already have CWM on it!
to do that you must install fastboot driver an connect your phone in fastboot mode to your pc(with the phone shut off pres and keep volume up key and plug into USB untill the blue led is on)
than go to the extracted folder(in the attachment) and pres and hold shift key + right click
select from menu open command window here
in the cmd window type " fastboot flash boot kernel.elf" without the comma`s
it will install the Xperia SSpedd OC @ 1,67 MHZ and you will get CWM olso on your device!
After installing that to enter CWM pres volume up when booting the phone while the blue led and light stripe is on!
this is olso for unlocked bootloader,i don`t know if it works for locked bootloader since my phone is with unlocked bootloader from the day 1!
Again simply installing this APK from the market seems to be less daunting.

Ares,
I think the op was talking about this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pvy.CWMinstaler which was the purpose of his post. The easiest way for new people to install CWM is with this apk from the market.
Correct me if I'm wrong OP.

Hello,
I am unable to post in the Developement threads at the moment due to the post limit but thought I would ask here and hopefully someone can help me.
Firstly, I have a Locked BootLoader that cannot be unlocked, I have rooted my XS and it is running ICS, I pretty much have it the way I want it but would like to try the MIUI ROM from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1768057 which works for all BootLoaders.
Secondly, I need to know if I will lose Root access by flashing the above ROM and also if I will lose all my personal Data. I have CWM installed and have backed up everything it will alow me to back up. But I am just concerned about losing root access and personal data.
For those of you who have flashed the ROM, can you tell me if root access is removed and if personal data is also wiped?
Thank you in advance and I appreciate all answers.
Personal data like pics, music and movie will not be lost if they are on the ext sd card.
Root should stay, but all apps that you install will be wiped so you need to download again from play store and make a backup for contacts and sms.

Would backing up via CWM not be advisable, just backup using the Sony PC Companion or the Backup and Restore utility on the phone itself, should I just use them all to be sure?
Thank you for the reply, much appreciated.
Allow me to add, all Media files are on the additional storage of the phone, the 32gb, I am just worried about SMS, Contacts and so on.
Also, with the above mentioned ROM, are there any limitations as to what apps would run, for instance, ICS compatible apps I previously purchased should have no issue?
Forgive my ignorance, I am not so familiar with Android.

Any chance you could point me in the right direction?
I originally used the method outlined by Sharaz22 to root my XS, downgrading to GB and flashing several things, but that is the only thing I have read on the subject of rooting a locked bootloader and to get it up to ICS rooted, I have not read about any special method for MIUI to maintain root access, even in the thread I linked above I could not see a work around, unless I am going blind.
Again, thank you and your help is appreciated.

You will never lose root if you install roms with cwm,you will lose it only if the rom are buggy but not in case of miui.

Okay, this is making sense to me now, so I just need to place the files into the suggested directory and reboot into CWM and flash MIUI throught there. Obviously following the instructions in the original thread and all should be fine, root access will not be lost and I can restore backed up content such as SMS and contacts without any fuss?
Thanks guys, that is great. :good:

I lost both when I flashed MIUI. I still had root, but not CWM. For locked bootloaders, the CWM is installed in the /system partition. When you flash MIUI, all of the files in that partition are changed, so you lose it. You can either reflash CWM like you did the first time or you can use this method (I forgot I had the link): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1787532

Sorry GM, one final question.
What is the difference between the one you linked and the one in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1793432
I notice Sharaz22 states he removed the Kernel so it would work with the stock Kernel, now I have the stock Kernel since I installed a stock ICS so what problems would I face if I went with the official one and not the one Sharaz22 "edited"?

Nope. Flash ROM with CWM, wipe what you have to wipe, and before rebooting, flash the CWM package (no need for the Superuser one)
Guys, I suffered some mishap yesterday trying to flash MIUI on my phone.
After the flashing process with CWM, the phone would not boot, no response other than a single flash of the green LED and a vibration, it would not boot and i tried for over an hour. In the end I had to use Flashtools and get ICS back on the phone.
Since that, I cannot root my phone again, I have tried and tried, the first time I did it, it was easy and straight forward, downgrading to GB and using the batch files and so on, but now, each and every time I try to do it and follow the guides, of which I have found two, it does not work. That is because the process states that the "Device is not detected" and it cannot locate anything related to ADB. I have checked the drivers, installed several, reinstalled flashtools and each time I go through the guide I am left with an unrooted phone and nothing seems to work. Even in flashtools it struggles to flash the ROM every now and then and the phone just seems to randomly disconnect even though it remains plugged in.
Any help, I am struggling to get anything done on this phone and I would rather just have Root and CWM than MIUI.

I managed to get Root and CWM back on with ICS and Flashed MIUI, I was disappointed by MIUI and thankfully I had created a CWM backup a day earlier of my phone the way I wanted it, so I restored that and have everything I was missing and back how the phone was before I started messing around with MIUI.

Hi, I've spent literally 5 hours today just trying to figure out what flashing is, rooting is, and how to install ADB/SDK drivers, but still no idea what flashing and rooting are (trying to unlock my phone). I've looked at so many guides, but I came across this one that seemed to work for me to install ADB/SDK tool http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2199526. What I'm trying to do is basically root my phone which is a samsung galaxy s2 GT-i9100 4.1.2, I have no idea what Ice cream sandwich or that jelly bean thing is, this is pretty much my first smartphone, i've never really needed a phone. Now I'm trying to root with this guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1994544 since I have no SD card, but here's the thing, even when I go to recovery mode, and then apply update from ADB, I then open up the ADB cmd and type adb devices, nothing comes up, I don't understand why my phone won't show up? I still try the sideload command but it says cannot read CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip. So what I'm trying to say is, I am a complete noob at what everyone here is specialized in lol, so can anyone explain it to me?
Also, yes I have read the newbies Q&A threads and the other introduction threads, but I mean, this is the help section, so I should be able to get help right?
First of buy an sd card "there cheap" then put philz kernel on it and then update that zip in recovery. "Root done and cwm installed " search philz thread for right kernel. Look for what you have installed. You say its 4.1.2 that's jellybean. Now look in settings, about phone and look for something like lsw or lss and such and flash kernel that fits your details. If not sure post your details. main thing is to read lots and lots and lots about what mite go wrong. All well thinking yay I can root but what happens if it gos wrong? Study lots about what your going to do. Reading is easy fixing is not.

Thanks for the reply, but I understand that doing this come's with a lot of risks, I've already encountered a problem lol (everytime I turn on phone color is inverted). Right now I don't have an sd card available that's why I'm trying the ADB solution. I'll post my details since I'm not sure what step to take from here.
What I've done:
Installed ADB
On phone, checked USB debugging
(I've also tried using exynosabuse, but that didn't work)
What's wrong:
From what I think, I havent applied ADB updates (I think thats what they are) to my phone, because I connect my phone to my pc and it does not show up in devices manager with a yellow exclamation mark. So this doesn't let ADB detect my phone which isn't letting me apply the CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip. in stock recovery.
My details:
Kernel version 3.0.31-889555
[email protected] #3
SMP PREEMPT
Build number JZO54k.I9100XWLSM
Baseband version I9100BVLS4
Edit: I just found out that when I place my phone in download mode, and then connect it to the pc, I check device manager and I finally get the yellow exclamation mark. Now I'm really not sure what step to take, do I update the device with a yellow exclamation mark? If so with what drivers? I also know about odin now, but I need to be able to have odin recognize my phone, and then know which kernel is right for me.

What you have done is a lot risk involved get an SD card. Check with app on play store cuz I think you have rooted it. Dose it boot to recovery now? Did you install cwm recovery? Do as I said and all will be good. Flash lsw philz kernel. What is it you want to do with your phone? Flash custom ROM??

I checked with the GalaxSim Unlock app and my phone isn't rooted, and from what I think I have done, I haven't rooted at all. From the beginning it already was able to boot to recovery, by recovery you mean holding vol up + menu + power. I do not remember installing cwm recovery at any point. All I want to do with my phone is root it, so that I can unlock it.
You can use Odin?. Flash philz tar kernel lsw. Why hadn't you read how to do this? Its so simple to do I don't get it.

I already said! When I open up Odin, it does not detect my phone! I don't know why.
An observation; you've made this process so much more difficult for yourself than you need to. Trying to use ADB to do what you're attempting to do is like killing a solitary microbe with Tsar Bomba (Google it).
Buy an SD card like I said. There like £2 for a 2gb card now!! Done helping now cuz your not helping your self. Seriously buy an SD card and you rooted in max ten mins. Risk is pretty much nil.

Alright, lol thanks man i'll get one. Quick question though, my phone is automatically making the color inverted when i turn it on after a couple of seconds, i'm not pressing the home button 4 times or anything, it just automatically does it. Anyway i can fix this? or will it fix itself when i root the phone since i'll be changing the kernel? Also what kernel do I get?
Philz kernel lsw . inverted colours I have no clue about what's going on there but rooting it won't fix that. Check in settings. What have you changed/installed?

All I installed since I started this is GalaxSim Unlock, ExynosAbuse, checked USB debugging, went into stock recovery but didn't do anything so turned off phone, went into download mode but didn't do anything so turned off phone. That's pretty much it. Will resetting my phone fix this? I really don't need anything on the phone, I can just reset it, but i'll do it if you say its safe.

Alright awesome thank you so much for your help.
Andrew, you said to get the lsw philz kernel, so I searched it up in the forums, and found this:
<< 03.06.2013 - PhilZ-cwm6 v5.06.1 with CWM 6.0.3.2 based recovery >>
DVLSH (i9100T) - XWLSS - XWLST - XWLSW - DXLSD - XXLSQ (i9100P) - ZSLSJ (fixed for bootloop)
http://d-h.st/users/philz_touch/?fld_id=16062#files
Should I download that? That was the only download that has LSW in the name in the list of kernels.
Yes lsw. Get signed zip put on ext SD or tar for Odin.if you have SD now put philz on ext SD card "a must" go to recovery and just update it. Reboot and your rooted. If boot loop factory reset then reboot. If your going with Odin get tar and flash away.

Am doing great! Results have come, and I've got admission in a good college for my post graduation in Oral Medicine & Radiology!! :good:
Good to see you guys again!
Thanks @[NUT] for finding the way of rooting 4.3 with locked BL. Since nobody makes one for Z Ultra, I will do it.
This is a flashable ROM extracted from stock 14.2.A.0.290 without ANY modification.
The only 2 things added are FULL ROOT and XZDualRecovery.
This method is copied and modified from @[NUT] 's Z1 ROM
Requirements:
Flashtool 0.9.13 by @Androxyde
XZDualRecovery 2.7.71 BETA or newer.
Current rooted FW version: 14.1.B.1.532 OR 14.1.B.2.257 (rooted).
note: 257 is not tested on Z Ultra yet.
In the following guide I suggest you use an external SDCard but that's just good practice, you can use your internal storage or even an USB OTG storage device in TWRP if you like to install, that's no problem!... If you are modding and the likes, best is to have an external sdcard, just for safeties sake.
C6802: How to update to 14.2.A.0.290:
This should work for C6833, too. But you will lose 4G.
WARNING:
As the 'update' part of this ROM package does not work yet:
THIS GUIDE WILL DESTROY ALL USERDATA!
For C6802: Download C6802_14.2.A.0.290.jackie099.flashable.zip (C6833_14.2.A.0.290.jackie099.flashable.zip if u have C6803)and C6802_14.2.A.0.290_Stripped.ftf, save them somewhere you remember;
Put 'C6802_14.2.A.0.290.jackie099.flashable.zip' on (the external) SDcard1;
Put 'C6802_14.2.A.0.290_Stripped.ftf' inside the Flashtool/firmwares folder;
Create a backup of your phone in CWM or TWRP and don't forget to backup the contents of 'SDCard0';
To prevent bootloops:
Flash XL39h-C6802_4.2.2-14.1.B.1.532.ftf firmware, please use the newest flashtool, or brick.
root it with Vroot, and install Supersu to replace vroot's permission manager.
Flash XZDualRecovery 2.7.71 (from PC)
In TWRP -> Wipe -> advanced Wipe Tick/Check:
Dalvik-Cache
System
Cache
Data
Internal Storage
Swipe to Right to do the factory reset
After that Click Format Data -> type yes
Flash 'C6802_14.2.A.0.290.jackie099.flashable.zip' or 'C6833_14.2.A.0.290.jackie099.flashable.zip' in TWRP
NOTE: do not reboot but go back to the main menu, then go to reboot->power off;
Flash everything in 'C6802_14.2.A.0.290_Stripped.ftf';
Now reboot to system.
Check Supersu, and u are rooted!
Hit Thanks or donate me if you think my work is useful for you!
Thank you for this! Much appreciated!
Just to let you know - both of your link (C6802_14.2.A.0.290_Stripped.ftf,) points to the wrong file.
I have been using NUT's 4.3 root guide for other Z-devices, but when trying with my Z Ultra it wouldn't work. I tried going from a rooted generic .532 to generic .290 created according to NUT's guide. I had success on Tablet Z and Z1 but not Z Ultra. I have a C6833.

Thank you, but I unlocked my bootloader so I am okay now.
If I have time this weekend I can try to make the files for C6833 and share them here.
Good work, but can you remove vRoot from the post and use Kingo or Bin4ary's root tools as vRoot may be harvesting imei no's

After looking at XZDualRecovery 2.7.71 I think this will work
DONT TRY THIS AT HOME KIDS
1/ flash either my BE Rom or DoggRom
2/ DON'T reboot yet, go to advanced/ power off (CWM) [or back to the main menu, then go to reboot->power off (TWRP)]
3/ start flash tool / select Flash / Flashmode
4/ select .290 ftf
5/ deselect wipes (done on install or Rom), exclude everything but kernel and then flash
6/ Reboot
7/ run XZDualRecovery 2.7.71 from pc
Will this work @hamdogg, @jackie099 ???

maybe that should have read:
5/ deselect wipes (done on install of Rom) [Top Box]
5a/ exclude everything but kernel [Middle Box]
5c/ and then flash
at that stage it should boot on a locked bootloader with partial root access, then running XZDualRecovery would give full root and recoveries - It's my belief that our roms wont boot on a locked bootloader as is?

Hello all, I have a rather difficult problem due to lack of knowledge I have on the device.
I have my old Z2 which I have recovered after someone I lent it to (not me, I promise) attempted to 'fix' the root on the device. The last time I saw the device it had PhilZ recovery and a custom ROM on the device.
I got the device back again after about a year apart. First thing is first, I factory reset the device from the bootloader. Oops, now it doesn't boot into rom correctly...
Well time to flash a new rom right? I use recovery to "wipe to prepare for new rom". I attempted to flash 'ressurection remix' rom or something similar for the Z2 via sideload. Only, the bootloader refused to sideload flash because "this zip is for [insert list of z2 devices, one of which I know this phone is], but this device is a leo". Huh? Quick bit of googling and I find a thread where apparently leo means the phone thinks it is a z3? Not great.
Well maybe since we are here I should try to get the device to be running TWRP which I am more familiar with. Now I'm not exactly sure what I did here, but the Z2 really didnt like it. I think I went into fastboot/flashboot (im not sure on the difference, which is probably why it is kill), and attempted to use adb/fastboot to flash a boot.img, as well as a recovery.img, in whatever order. Nothing seemed to happen at all.
TL;DR: So onto the present situation. I am no longer able to boot into recovery. The light will flash green for a tenth of a second and then phone will die. I can however hold volume up+power+USBcablein to make the device go into bootloader?/fastboot?/flashmode? Not sure which, but my computer beeps for a connection and the Z2 has a constant blue light, with no screen. adb does not see the device, nor does fastboot, although I am updating my drivers to see if this helps.
What should I do from here? I'm not sure what flashtool is, but I think this is my next step (although every google result says something different...). I'm not sure where to download this from because all available sites look dodgy.
Device info:
It is a UK device that used the carrier ORANGE in 2015.
It was running PhilZ recovery
It was running KK ROM

The first thing you had to do before you did all that craziness, was to back to stock using flashtool. There are guides here, guides on Google, and guides on YouTube about how to using flashtool. It's very more easy than flashing a custom ROM and all that stuff. Just download the FTF KK firmware, then root, then recovery, and then download FTF of Marshmallow and you will be done.
It's been 3 days ago that you posted this. I hope you solved the problem. This is my little contribution.
Excuse my English, it's not the best.

Hi Snevil,
I havent fixed the issue yet because I really had no idea where to go from where I put myself. Do you know of a good place to download Flashtool, each link I find is either expired or seems really dodgy.?
Thanks for helping out
