Subject says it all. Is this possible with the evo 4g lte? I want to use it as a GPS in my car and just have it power on with the car. I've done a lot of searching and it looks like some samsungs can do this but the functionality is in the boot loader or hardware? So my question is can the evo do this out of the box? if no, can it do it with TWRP or CWM? and/or does cyanogenmod add this functionality? thanks a lot.
Now, when you say "power on," are referring to the screen that is off while the phone is sleeping, or do you mean completely off?
AOSP roms do have the option to turn on the fly screen when you plug it in. Also, as of the new firmware release from HTC that came with Sense 5.0, or phones now turn the screen on when you plug in the charger (at least mine does...I never asked around to confirm this). But in both conditions, the device is powered on, but sleeping.

no I'm talking fully powered off. I guess I assumed a screen off sleep wouldn't last for like 3-4 days. Do you think that is possible? airplane mode enabled except wifi(no cell/BT) and screen off sleep. will that last 3 days? so that would be 3 days till power is resumed to charge it to full?
thanks for the feedback.

I think my phone might be using batter power even when i turn it off! I dont use my phone much im using a stock rom. Ok ive realized lately that if i dont use my phone for like a day and its off I was at 60% battery power when i turned it off then when i went back the next day to turn it on the power button wouldnt turn it on i had to take the battery out and put it back in then press the power button and it came out with only 10% battery power im wondering in anyone else has had this problem? O and its usually in my backpack.
It probably got turned back on in your backpack
unless you put it in flight mode, the phone doesn't actually ever turn off, only the screen. Also in low signal situations the battery will run down much faster.
hope this helps.

Doesn't flight mode only turn off the radio? No, just as before the phone remains on, but at best in a low power state such as standby.
We can turn our phones off. If I hold the power button down I then get a window:
"Power will be turned off, and you may lose data if you have not saved them. Do you want to continue?"
After powered off, then next time I power it on the phone reboots.
I've got a HTC TyTN (hermes) and i get the same problem: my battery wears off in maximum 3 hours after i fully charge it. all the connections are turned off, except for the phone function. also, while it's charging, no matter if it's charging through the usb or the AC charger, the battery gets very hot. PLEASE can anyone help
(i have the black satin normal rom, with the 1.43.00.00 radio version installed)

This is a ppc6800 mogul not a 6700 moguls can actually turn off it still does it even if i take the battery out and put it back in.
Sounds like you weakened your battery. Question, do you constantly have your phone plugged into the charger? Same thing happened to me, I used to have my phone plugged in 90% of the day and I noticed that the times that I didn't have it plugged in, the battery life was drastically reduced. Overcharging can weaken a rechargeable battery.
I use to charge it every night then take it off every morning and sometimes since my sis stole my charger id use a motorala on my dad has its output is 5.0v and input is 100-240v is this the right voltage for my mogul? Now i almost never charge it cause its usually off. And im not sure if this has to do anything but my water damage stickers ARE NOT TRIPPED
Maybe I just haven't found the answer, but has anyone else had the problem with the phone being dead the next day even though it had power when turning it off? I've been getting great battery life but the other night when powering down I had 30-something percent only to not be able to turn it on this morning. I plugged it in via usb to charge for 10 minutes and after turning on it said 31, so it wasn't dead. Same thing happened last time I needed to charge but it happened before using batterminder and the system-battery level showed 1/4 charge left.
Since I'm using batterminder to determine percentage I was wondering if the levels are being misreported. Yesterday I ran the phone dead and batterminder counted all the way down so I don't think its misreporting.
Any ideas?
Holding the power button down long enough? And is fast boot enabled
Bussin Caps n 3D
Yep. Turn off fast boot should fix it. Your phone doesn't turn completely off with that option enabled.

im sure with the phone off EVEN in fastboot that it cant be using that much battery at all
i mean, its not like the phone is sleeping(where as if you have data sync on it'll still use 3g/wifi to get data at intervals with the screen off)
even if you use fastboot the phone is OFF,as in doing completely nothing
so what exactly is the phone doing while its off to use battery? i assume its like the sleep function on a computer, but even so, it should draw VERY little power
I turned off fastboot to see if anything changes, but with the phone being completely turned off I don't see why the battery would drain. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion, I'll report back my results.
I'm not finding any other posts about this, so please forgive me if this is well known.
I have installed Superclean, with the KGB kernel, and I'm using Pimp My CPU to overclock/underclock. While unplugged everything seems to work great, but when I plug in the charger, at some point the phone powers OFF. (I've seen complaints about the phone staying ON while charging but this is the opposite.) It's kind of a big deal since I use my phone as my alarm clock, and typically overnight is when I have it on the charger. So I can't afford for it to be spontaneously powering off while charging it.
So, any ideas about this? Is there a setting I'm missing somewhere? Let me know if there is more information I can give about this issue. Thanks!
Is it actually shutting down or just the screen shutting off? Check in applications then development and see if stay awake while charging is checked.
I'm running SC with latest KGB 12/12 and have not had this happen. Just a suggestion hope it helps.
While plugged in I get the large green battery on the screen when I press power. When I unplug the charger, it boots just as from a powered-off state (boot animations, etc.). The "stay awake" option is NOT set, but I thought that option was just regarding the screen on/off, not the device power on/off. I guess I could try having that option on, and set the screen really dim -- at least then I could use the alarm clock feature while charging.

Are you using sleep profiles in pimp CPU?
"the relentless pursuit of the perfect rom"
I only had a Default and Screen Off profile. Notice I say had because I actually noticed that I started having some instability on top of the power-off issue, so I reverted back to the kernel that came with the ROM, and uninstalled Pimp. This addressed the stability issues (I didn't have time to experiment with voltages, etc. to figure out what works with my device).
As for the powering off while charging: apparently setting the "stay awake" option did address this issue, although I am still puzzled as to why. I always assumed this setting was for devs who were testing apps and didn't want to have to keep unlocking their phone. I didn't think it would have any effect on preventing the phone from going into a powered-off state, but whether by coincidence or design, this did prevent the power off while charging that I had encountered. So thank you for the suggestion!
Thanks for the replies sfobrien and laureanop!
Xperia S powers off while charging
I'm having the exact same problem. I have a brand new Xperia S (OK, a bout 1 week old) and last night plugged in the mains charger. I then set the alarm to 7:30am and dimmed the screen display. The handset stayed on for at least 10 minutes. I fell asleep. The alarm did not wake me at 7:30! When I woke at 7:45am I found the phone had switched itself off completely and although the power cable was still plugged in, the handset did not appear to have charged the phone (47% battery remaining). So 2 issues: why did the mains charger fail to continue charging the phone throughout the night; and why did the phone power down completely. I would only expect the phone to automatically power down when the battery was nearing zero %.

So This happened about a month ago.. Ironically same night of the week (Saturday night) So I got lucky i didn't have work the next morning so my Alarm didn't need to go off.
I was originally HTC Unlocked, Now I am S-OFF. The first time this happened is when I was HTC Unlocked, the 2nd time, S-OFF.
Phone was not turned off. Phone was at good battery life (~90%). I hit the power button, screen would not turn on. I plug it into charge, light does not come on. I have to hold down the Volume Down+Power for a while, then eventually it resets itself.
Now, I do not think this is ROM or Baseband+Radio Specific because I'm on completetly different ROM/Baseband then I was earlier. And also, this is the 2nd time it happened since I had the phone.
I'm running 1.05.11.0606 Baseband, 2.45_003 PRI, MeanRom ICS. However... I'm almost certain it's not a ROM specific issue because I was running a totally different one.
It *COULD* be an app. However I am very picky and make sure almost nothing is running in the background of my phone (just the internet browser).
Does anyone have any idea why my phone would go into this sort of... "Deep Sleep" in the middle of the night, and not wake out of it? Where it's happened only on a Saturday Night so far. There is also NO way I can think of replicating it. If I install Logcat, Will I even be able to monitor something like this?
Edit: I must note, both times it was NOT plugged in charging. Usually I have my phone charging overnight. I'm going to start charging my phone before going to sleep to keep it unplugged while sleeping to see what happens
Thanks..
Mark
Bump...
So I was at work today and was using my phone with no problem, Came back to it when I was leaving, hit the power button to turn on the screen and nothing...
Needed to hold the power + volume down button for about 20 seconds for it to boot up again.
I can't seem to narrow it down if it's a hardware, software, or kernel issue. It seems like it's hard locking up while sleeping (can't charge it at this point either). I am going to do a full wipe, reinstall apps one more time, and see what happens.
What Rom are you running?

This sounds like a hardware panic, that would need specific diagnostics run, in order to identify potential root-cause issues. That might mean taking your battery out and hooking it up to a tester, etc.

After it happened and you rebooted the phone, you need to get last_kmsg and send it to developer of the rom you are on. He might be able to figure out the problem.

Last night in bed i turned the N9 flashlight on to find my power cord and then shut down my tablet (like I usually do when charging). Before the tablet had completely powered off I had plugged in the power cord. I noticed the flash light never turned off, and stayed on even after unplugging the tablet. I had to turn it back on for the flashlight to finally turn off.
Is that normal?

Since the flash is for the camera it probably isn't meant to stay on. It's part of the system so when you plugged it in it just kept the light active. Apps control whether it's on or off, and since you never turned it off it just stayed on. So I guess I'd recommend either turning the flashlight off or waiting until it's completely off to plug it in.
sounds like a bug, uncommon use case that got overlooked, I'd submit the bug. nothing more than a check of the system to shut down all hardware devices on halt. see if you can repeat the issue, then submit it with what you did.

Isn't it logical that if you want a flashlight then you aren't looking at the display and you don't want the flashlight to turn off when the tablet wants to sleep?
