HELP!!! - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

A friend of mine is having a serious problem. His family has had all of their cell phones and computers including tablets and tv dvr box hacked. The hackers have gained complete control over everything. .. text messaging, cameras, information and even the accounts themselves. The original phones were through tmobile and the account was closed and all new iphones phones were literally destroyed. He opened a brand new account through att buying all new samsung s4's and within days hacked again. Out of frustration, he took a hammer to the phones. These hackers are theatening their lives. They have even accessed other peoples phones through theres! The police pretty much won't do crap. These people are not tech smart! I am somewhat tech smart. So my question is this: is there something I can do to figure out how they are doing it and is there a way too prevent them from doing this?? Any help is GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!

These are not new to me. They can even copy your simcard without your knowing and do the phone call with your number. They can do these by scanning your phone frequency while you're using your phone and not too far from you.

Exactly!!! This is what I've learned recently. The big question now is how can people prevent this from happening?? What measures can they take??
Sent from my Galaxy Note 3 using Tapatalk

Have they spoke to the phone company? It seems as if this is a highly personal attack on your friend and his family. Personal attacks are usually not done by strangers, which would mean your friend should know who is doing it. If he has proof of threats on their lives, the police have to take that seriously. If not the best route might be to take that hammer to the offenders face, not the poor phones.

They did speak to the phone company which was useless. They do know who is doing this and the police pretty much acted like they have better things to do even with actual proof and they know exactly who is doing it. Fortunately we now have someone involved who is taking care of the police end of it. It'd just be nice to know what kind of preventive measures people can take to keep this from happening. I agree they shouldn't of taken the hammer to the phones!! Poor phones!! They were all brand new too!

This is what we call conspiracy. The way to prevent it is using another technology which we don't have. Try to subscribe with someone else's name with another new phone. If these methods still fail, I don't have any idea then.

Hmm
Maybe the hacked device is the pc! Each and evry device you connect to ur pc gets compromised!
To resolve this problem search for unknown applications installed on the pc! And uninstall them!
And before uninstalling turn on your firewall! Maybe that application resist to uninstall which may cause breaking ur pc completely!
And after doing all this! Only solution for recovering mobiles is to factory reset them!
Hit thanks if i helped you!

If FemtoCell is the actual tool then its the neighbours as it only works from within a 15-40 FT radius. Walk over to the neighbours house and ask them to locate the device then smash it with a bat.
By any chance do these neighbours work for any cell phone company? As what they are doing with vendor equipment is illegal and can even get the vendor in hot water (ie Verizon, aTT, TMob being the vendor here). These are usually given out as cell phone signal boosters for rural areas, and if thats the case ... phone the provider and tell them the adress of the neighbour with the FemToCell and see the vans show up fast.

Im sure FemToCell is used worldwide. I just assume USA/Canadian as that what I am and normally deal with. Either way its malicious.

This issue sounds to be a WiFi attack. More than likely they have had their routers encryption cracked and the hacker used that to gain access to each device.

Agreed. I don't see the problem with it. Heck if I could make it into a side business I would. As others have said, they aren't selling the work that others have made, they're charging for their time, knowledge, gas (in a lot of cases they will travel to you) and convenience to root/hack/mod a phone that the owner doesn't want to do themselves. Yeah they can read some forums and do it themselves, but if they're willing to pay for it, it means they're either lazy and don't care or aren't technically inclined.
Some phones really aren't as simple as you would think to root and simply install wifi tether, for example. Downloading drivers, reading the root process for that device, downloading the scripts and tools, copying files to and from the phone, rebooting and the wait adds up into a lot of time and sometimes frustration. A lot of people don't want to deal with it, and if I'm going to learn all of that and sacrifice my time for someone I don't know, I want to be compensated.
I worked for Data Doctors (computer repair business) and while our prices (not set by me) were a little expensive, people gladly paid it because they didn't know how nor could they be bothered to fix the system themselves. That's business.
it took my around 5 hours the other day to figure out how to root, s-off and flash a custom rom on the Amaze. If I had already started my new job I would definitiv have paid the $15 to save me 5 hours of time.

I think it's f*ed up that you flagged just because you're an XDA member who "supposedly" knows better.
He's trying to make some money off of his knowledge.
I mean, just because the information is here doesn't mean everyone who reads it understands it or could implement it.
Some people are not technology inclined.
YouTube has videos on how to do almost everything but just because you watch doesn't mean you'll be able to do it.
What was wrong with him trying to make money from the time and effort he invested into understanding the rooting and unlocking process of a phone?

The Death of a Great Note 2 Relationship!

Hi All!
Sorry to say that this is the end of a great relationship that my Note 2 and I have had. It's not Samsung's fault and it's not my fault the only people that can be blamed is Verizon themselves. When Verizon released the Android 4.1.2 update a couple of weeks ago the update installed smoothly and restarted the phone which was totally expected. What wasn't expected was for the display not to light up after the phone came back on. After fighting with Verizon support for over an hour on the phone, they sent me a replacement. Well supposedly they run the replacements through a 100+ point check before they send them out to people. Boy have I proved Verizon wrong on that with the phones that I had both the Note 2 and the Samsung Stratosphere(don't get me started on the Stratosphere). Well I get the replacement in the mail don't download the Android update or any apps other than the updates for those that Verizon and Samsung put on the phone. Within 20 minutes time the phone shut itself off 3 different times, and it got so hot that I could not physically bear to touch it. Which says a lot for the temperature because after working for McDonalds as long as I have I almost lost all feeling of heat in my hands so it takes a lot for me to be holding something and say that it's hot. I called Verizon and had them force feed me the bull**** that it had to be something that I downloaded causing this. After fighting with them for another 2 hours I had them sending me another phone and a replacement battery. Well the following Monday comes(2 days after getting the first replacement phone) and FedEx drops off the phone and battery. I open it up and activate the phone and no matter what I did I could not get the phone to connect to any wi-fi network. I spent 2 hours on the phone with Samsung, an hour on the phone with Belkin, and another hour on the phone with my Internet Service Provider all trying to troubleshoot the issue so that when I called Verizon I couldn't have them say that it was my internet service provider, wireless router, or something that Samsung had to help me with. I even went to every Wi-Fi Hotspot within a 15 mile radius of my house and tried connecting there with no luck. Well I call Verizon and fight with them some more and get force fed more lies and they send me out another phone. Well a day later when I get this phone it has the same exact problem of the phone that it replaced with the added issue that the power jack on the phone is so freaking loose that you can take the charger and spin it around in a complete circle. This had me furious at this point. Especially with all the aggravation that is involved when I call Verizon. Every single time I call them I am sexually harassed over the phone. They have it right there in black and white on the computer screens in front of them not to refer to me as a woman when I call, they have my name which is a guy's name and cannot be a girl's name, and the first thing out of my mouth before I even tell them my name is "I am a man, do not refer to me as a woman, and if you do so it will be considered sexual harassment." Well that doesn't stop them from repeatedly in the same conversation with the same person referring to me as a woman. Well after fighting with them some more and being sexually harassed some more and after threatening to take my family's 5 lines and get my extended family to follow suit with all of their lines(about 45 in all) and switch to a different carrier the head of the callcenter in Tampa, FL switched his tune right there and then especially after I told him that the reason he was calling me was because one of his management staff was sexually harassing me I gave him his choices he could either send me a brand new Galaxy Note 2 still in the box free of charge or he could switch it out to a different phone of my choice free of charge that was comparable in my mind. Well I chose the 32 GB model of the iPhone 5. I know it's no Note 2 in many ways, but I have had the iPhone in the past with work both the 3G and the 4 and have had no issues with the phone that weren't caused by something that I did( Dropped the 3G in the toilet). So as much as I loved the Note 2 and love Android I am switching back for the time being to an iOS device. February 4, 2014 I am eligible for my upgrade and by then the Note 3 should be out and I will be back to the Android side of the force. I just wanted to take and say my temporary farewell to Android.
Gunner Out!
Lol at sexual harassment.
Iphone5 comparable to the note2? Why didnt you say the s4? Or even s3? Sorry to hear about your situation. Verizon must be going down hill, cause I've always had good experiences with CSRs.

I never said that the iPhone 5 was comparable hardware, but I have always had good luck with iPhone's and I know plenty of people who have the S3 and they don't like the phone and I won't touch the S4 with a 10 foot pole till it's been out for a few months. Out of 5 of my siblings 4 have the iPhone 5 and my baby sister has the S3 and has had the same trouble with Verizon that I had. The best thing about the iPhone 5 is I don't have to contact Verizon Tech support directly I can go through Apple and my friends who are Geniuses at their stores.

I don't get it? Why wouldn't you touch the s4 for a few months? If you like the Note2 and Android so much, the S4 is the closest thing comparable hardware and software. Personally I think the iphone5 is a downgrade. Yeah, it might cost around the same price but it lacks a lot of features.

Asking someone to refer to you as male or female and the person does not oblidge does not constitute sexual harassment.
Sexual harassment*is*bullying*or*coercion*of a sexual nature, or the unwelcome or inappropriate promise of rewards in exchange for sexual favors.[1]*In most modern legal contexts, sexual harassment is illegal. As defined by the US*EEOC, "It is unlawful to harass a person (an applicant or employee) because of that person’s sex." Harassment can include "sexual harassment" or unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical harassment of a sexual nature.
Sounds to me like someone just trying to get their way.... But I digress...

Is Motorola Atrix still a good phone?

Hello to everyone!
I would like to buy an second hand Atrix for 100 euros and I don't know if it is a good deal. As (former) owners of this phone, would you do this deal?
So why are people so bent on not willing to search even the most basic things?
STOP BEING LAZY AND USE SEARCH.
It is really annoying when the same questions get asked over and over and over again.
Hi peslap,
Your thread has been moved from Atrix 4G General to Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting. Please post in the correct sub-forum in future.

Avg deal on Atrix - 50-80 USD
not sure what the conversion rate is from Euro to USD, but as long as it falls in that range it is a good deal.
I would definitely get this phone again. despite all the drama that has happened with bootloaders, ICS, etc., my time with this device has been great. It may have hit its official EOL and may slowly be marching towards its developmental EOL (remember, epinter said he had issues getting 4.3 to boot at first, and we don't know what kind of revamped system KK will bring), but it still is able to do the basics and provide a good performance to the user of the device. Case and point, look at how many ppl are still tracking this device/using this device.
I just bought a used one on The Bay as I felt it offered a good deal for $95 in great condition. It was unlocked but, needed the Bootloader unlocked and Rooted. Non-contract phones for around $100 USD are mostly single core low storage and RAM. There are other older tech phones out there that fall in this category but, I went with the Atrix and so far am happy I did!:good:
It's still a good buy since you can unlock the bootloader, and have fun loading custom Roms.
Really the unlocking of the bootloader is the only thing that saved this phone.
The ability to throw (say for example) Cyanogen Mod on this phone makes it a good primary phone, and IMO an excellent secondary device...

As a current "user" of a Motorola Atrix, I encourage you to not do do so. I don't know if that's a cheap price but with the wifi/bt problem I got on my Atrix (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1205775, that's why I wrote down "user" between quotes: because of that my phone not only got wifi/bt broken, now speaker doesn't work anymore and can't pick up calls) I think people must not buy any Motorola phone again. It's incredible that someone make chips with planned obsolescence.
Of course good phone,as if you don't watch hd videos.
I love the phone so much I've gone through probably a dozen over the years. I don't want a new phone with a larger screen, I like a small phone. I like hdmi out, swappable batteries, and micro SD.
As the last post mentioned, the phone does have a serious design flaw. The WiFi/Bluetooth chip stops working. That's the biggest reason I've gone through so many of these. I know people who have never had the problem, but I've had it on close to a dozen deviCes. Perhaps it's my usage that gives me such high failure rates. As of right now, there is no known fix for the WiFi problem, the.main board requires replacement.
Your mileage will vary of course and you may get an Atrix that lasts you for years with zero problems. My first one lasted over a year.

Also, all the other parts are very easily replaceable, like the screen, digitizer, speaker, etc.
Only problem that can't be fixed cheaply is WiFi. Besides that, It's one of the easiest phones to work on.

Here's a little clue to the question of attic being good. I I was recently upgraded to the Sam d4 by Att and liked it until they locked it down. I I kept finding reasons to send it in and get a replacement that was not locked down. 3 times.
Finally I sold it and bought the attic new on eBay for 118 USDA. This was the phone I was upgraded from which I had unfortunately broken.
I loved the attic and hope to use it for a while.
I don't watch movies or television on my cellphone ever.

I paid $40 on ebay for a used one. Condition is better than i expected to be honest. Everything seems to work fine but if I had to use it with motoblur i would skip it. Honestly couldn't give 2 craps one way or the other if bluetooh dies off. Wifi would be a bummer but not a deal breaker for me.
So what you're saying is, you're pleased by the overall condition because you're a very non-demanding person with low standards?
I mean most people would definitely be very upset if their bluetooth and/or wifi quit working...
I'm pleased with the condition because I paid $40 for a phone that was $200 3 years ago and everything seems to work. I never use bluetooth so if it happens to die i would never even notice. If wifi died that would be a bummer but I only really use wifi while at home and when I'm at home i'd rather use my laptop or nexus 7 than my phone so it wouldn't be that big of a deal.
Bluetooth? Why? Who uses it and for what? Earsets? More of a nuisance than anything else.

Your opinion, not the majority opinion of others.
By the way, a little fyi. Did you know that there are laws in place about driving and phone usage? Did you think about the fact that bluetooth allows drivers to use their phones without breaking laws? Oh and by the way, for military members like myself, its against base policy to talk and drive. Which means that bluetooth is something that can help servicemembers answer their phones without violating policies and getting their on base driving priveledges revoked.

FYI talking while driving is talking while driving through a warder or not.

LG trolling with banner ad's

Take a look at this, LG is using banner ads to troll on Apple, HTC, and Samsung to promote the G2. Bold but kinda messed up. LG is basically crapping on these devices. Lol how woukd you feel? This would piss me off not gain my appeal.

Only in Sweden. It also doesn't say where the where the banners appear? Is it from websites selling advertising? If so it is no different than any other ad.

This shows where the banners will appear. This isn't website advertising, this is clearly LG.

Not that sandbox fights between companies are pretty, but I don't see this as bad as Samsung vs Apple, AMD vs Nvidia or Mac vs PC ads. Though I hope LG won't continue with this before it gets worse.
Really the way I see it it's smart. A car salesman will tell you why his car is the better choice over the competitor.
Why shouldn't phone companies do the same? As long as there's no name calling and the ads just play with words I say it's innocent.
I mean, iPhones screen is smaller. If you don't want bigger, you won't care about the add. If you do, maybe you'll be happier with another phone.

It still looks like website banner ads to me. Notice the browser is open. There has to be something to push these ads. Unless you install something then the only way I can think of its through the web. Unless carriers allowed push ads over their network, and if that starts we might as well through out our phones

Yes it's targeted website ads, kinda like how Google does, but this checks what phone you have.
Maybe its me but I think people will have a problem with an advertisement tell them what device they have, and crap on it lol. This isnt TV, this is an ad showing up in your browser, identifying your device and crapping on your device. Its just gonna seem a little exploitative. To some people not all.

They already track thi s. Websites track your device, os, pc type, location and much more. LG just announced they are taking advantage of it. You might stop by not accepting cookies and you might not. I am not sticking up for anyone. I hate ads on the web. All I am saying is others are already tracking it. LG is just the first phone makers to do it. I guess I would rather have that, than have them getting my info and spamming my inbox. My son is an IT specialist. Some of the stuff he has shown me is far scarier.

Yes this is very true. I wanted to elaborate on that a little more but it was too much to type from my phone so thanks for acknowledging this. The thing I was trying to get at was yes ads and websites have been tracking devices and ISPs for some time now. Its just that some people rather not know this because your right, it is scary, and having websites with these ads pop up kinda makes you feel like the sites/ads are compromising your devices security.

Yes and thanks. More people do need to be aware. I have not rooted yet because it seems like it is mostly rooted users having issues. But that scares me to I used to root to install firewall.

Bold move LG, but i like it..
They do get their facts right though..
I always preferred marketing teams that didn't mention their competitors in their ads. Seems wrong to insult another product that is so popular, some people may be offended.
If they are offended, then LG is right. I won't be offended if someone calls my car crap if it's not.
However if I have a crappy car it might sting because then it turns into an insult against me.
In other words, if you feel targeted, it's probably right.

I think it's funny. Plus, all of those statements are true. If they don't like it, that simply means they could've had better with the g2! Jealousy is often manifested as anger

I recently returned from Stockholm, have never owned an Android device, iPhone from 2G all the way to 5. I wonder if those banner ads seduced me... Stockholm Syndrome! But seriously, though it has taken some time, I'm enjoying the LG G2.

Its hard to pull of an ad like this if it isnt done right. I think Nokia has done it right with its ads promoting its camera on the Lumia devices. Instead of putting down devices, it uses the people in its ads to do this. Seeing people fight over who's camera is better is a perfect concept anyone can relate to now, especially when it paints a picture of fan boys doing this, because everyone knows this is what fan boys do.
In most any business you never talk bad about your competition. When you talk bad about your competitors it makes you look worse. In my field of work I would never use negative tactics to attack another company in order to gain a customers trust.

You almost have a valid point there but these are top of the line devices we are talking about here. These are flaship devices that people just spent hundreds of dollars on and now they have been insulted. LG isnt going after outdated devices, these ads are targeted towards high end devices that people use today. The argument here is that LG is using an intrusive method (most people will find this intrusive) of advertising, even though its absolutely legal, to promote the G2.
Honestly, if you're looking for a device that is the fastest, then find out through an add that your phone isn't the fastest, the insult might be in place xD
Bottom line in my mind is, do your research right, and you won't be offended. By a phone by its brand and without knowing what might be better, you're kind of stupid. Never buy for a brand.

Johnny Cash and Me: "I Won't Back Down"

I'm going to hold on as long as I can. If the unlikely were to happen, and I can get Nougat, it will be until my normal phone rotation. I don't fly, don't have kids at home, and my phone is always with me and not unattended, so don't feel like I'm putting anyone or myself at risk. I just don't like any of the options at this time. Everyone here knows it's a great phone and nothing compares right now. Just a darn shame.
I thought the same. Then the email came through. "Your phone has been recalled. Someone is coming Thursday evening between 6 and 9 to pick it up. Have the phone ready. The end".

You must be joking - unless of course you initiated a return. If someone came to my door out of the blue asking for my $800+ phone, I would fall down laughing.
I did not initiate a return, no.
No joke I'm afraid. I didn't even schedule a pick up either. They told me, with out me contacting them.
Sure, if someone came out or the blue and you didn't know who they were. Of course not!
But this isn't some random dude. I bought my phone from Samsung direct. Technically they haven't charged me yet either. So I don't plan on getting a £730 bill for and end of life phone this close to Christmas no matter how much I love it.
Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
Well that is just outrageous! It is something of a loophole that you haven't been charged for it yet. Also I think you're in the UK and consumer laws might differ from US. Think that's a very odd way for them to handle it.
is there a test that we could make for verify if our Note 7 is safe or not? I think samsung it has surrended after the double fool, but could it be possible that all our note 7 are defective? I think no, not all, and that samsung can't continue to find a solution, but we? We surrender? I do not want to.
The test i thinked is to use a navigator app for at least 1 hour on morning under sun.
In that conditions usually the phone that I use become very very very hot.
What do you think?

Until the exact cause of the failure is known, it can't be tested for. You're assuming heat is the cause. This is probably true, but not proven, and even if it is true, there could be secondary conditions necessary to cause the battery failure.

That is an extreme measure. But at least UK is taking it seriously.
Here in SG, Samsung is taking their own sweet time.

Yep...however Johnny Cash only did the song "I won't back down" as a cover. It was originally Tom Petty's song who had a much better version.
