Sprint's Coverage is Ridiculously Bad! Any help? - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

I have gone back and forth a couple times now. I ran the RUU to go to 4.3 Android (Htc official side loaded RUU) and I live in the Los Angeles area. My signal is absolutely ridiculous. Updated radios, current version of HBOOT and other drivers, I hoped that I would pick up 4g LTE in my area because the sprint coverage map shows that my location has it available for the EvoLTE. Going back to my device I am having 2G Edge and the slowest 3G of my life!
Has this been happening to you guys as well?
I made sure to select LTE/CDMA for my antenna options but no change.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Personally, I'd call Sprint and complain. That being said, it's a kind of well known fact that the EVO LTE's don't always have the best reception. ie two people in the same location with Sprint service, one on the EVO LTE, the other with a different device. The other person gets 4g LTE and the EVO user doesn't.

I can tell you from experience that Sprint doesn't seem to care if your service is crappy. Your best bet is to go with a carrier with better coverage. I was with Sprint for 10+ years.

Sprint compared to at&t

So was at the mall yesterday with a friend, she has an inspire on at&t i went to download a new game on my phone from the market the game was 20mb i was downloading it for like 20 mins and she downloaded it in like 2mins i was like wtf... Why is the sprint network so so slow? I was doing speed tests with almost full signal and was getting like 70kb
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
At&t has the fastest network, but they charge crazy amounts for overages.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
Coverage differ eveywhere, speed is affect by tower load and backhaul, more users per tower, slower you get, so probably the sprint tower was serving more customer than ATT?
ATT 3G (which is also their psuedo 4G) is faster than sprint's 3G base on the technology, HSDPA vs CMDA/EVDO
i bet you weren't using the 4G right? if you can get a decent 4G signal then the speed should be comparable, but being inside a mall, unless the mall is right next to the tower.... hard to get a decent signal

VZW 4G is fastest, even faster than ATT HSDPA
I thought I saw Verizon scoring the highest.. but you maybe right.
I wasnt on 4g just 3g, me and her both were outside the mall when downloading, so ur saying her 3g is actually 4g?
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
From what I understand ATT has the fastest speed if and when you can get a slot on the tower--they are much better at this part than they were a year ago.
Verizon has middle of the road speed and expansive coverage.
Sprint has decent enough coverage and good roaming agreements, not over-saturated towers and WAS considerably faster than Verizon--until the EVO4G came out last year. I could actually notice my speeds dropping from day to day. They bottomed out 4 or 5 months ago and are stuck where they are...
Keep in mind this also changes based on time of day and population density and your data speed will be proportionate to your signal strength for the most part. If your buddy with ATT had full bars and you had almost none it doesn't matter whose phone or network is the fastest. Though I hear CDMA and GSM handle this differently I'm not so sure about that.
Even though with only 1/4 bar on my NS4G I get 1.5mbps in my apartment...the E3D went back primarily cuz its radios sucked for stability and performance. Hell, on my E4G I traded in yesterday I got 2.1mbps with 3/6 bars. The E3D couldn't touch that.

You likely weren't even on 3g, probably down to 1x, stock software wont show the difference though. Sprint's network blows in most places but I have faith that it'll get better.
I say stick with Sprint, they are adopting new technologies quicker than verizon and at&t. But speaking of 3g speed, at&t has the fastest but spotty coverage, then comes verizon with fast speed, excellent coverage, and t-mobile and sprint tied for third with ok speed and coverage. But I hear t-mobile's 3g speeds have been getting better with their introduction of 4g.
All in all, hopefully by 2012, sprint's standard 3g speeds will be better

for NOW, what AT&T call is 4G is actually faster version of their 3G tech same as Tmobile, which is HSPA+, AT&T won't BEGIN roll out their actual 4G LTE network until LATE this year.
Notice 4G LTE is the Tech Verizon have ALREADY deployed.
Early test with the not yet congested VZW 4G LTE show ACTUAL speeds download AND UPLOAD upward of 20mbps
AT&T's HSPA+ is MAX 14mbps, most day to day use see speed between 3-10mbps.
Tmo's HSPA+ is MAX 42mbps, most day to day use see speed about 10mbps.
Sprint and VZW's 3G is EVDO, that MAX out in day to day use about 2mbps, VZW on average is faster than Sprint, maybe about 200kbps-300kbps difference.
Sprint's 4G is WiMax, fastest i've seen is about 12mbps, usually more like 3-6mbps. so to have a chance to catch your friend's AT&T's speed, you need to have 4G on.
drawback of 4G Wimax and LTE... current generation chips suck battery juice super quick, our EVO 3D can be drain in 3-5hours of 4G usage
Pro of 4G Wimax and LTE, alot more spectrum/frequency efficient on the carrier's side, they can have more capacity in the same spectrum. Note that this is a mostly a Pro for the carrier and mostly a NULL factor to end users.
vice versa a CON of ATT/Tmo HSPA+ 3G/Psuedo 4G... they need more spectrum/frequency to acheive same capacity as 4G Wimax/LTE
Just the point that the signal with my 3d really sucks where ever i go, i dont know if its a hardware issue or a software issue, i dont wanna be stuck with a phone that gets horrible signal all the time, so should i take it back or keep it and hoping an update fixes the radios?

I'm with ya man. I did both. If this gets fixed (and we get unlocked) I'll be back. But until then I'm rocking a NexusS4G with a crappy Samsung radio that is somehow more reliable than the 3D's radio--just sayin'.
It has everything to do with where you are. I am in Miami/South Miami/Coconut Grove, FL and Sprint dominates ATT and Verizon. The blackberry bold I have on Verizon from work is essentially worthless in a shocking amount of popular/urban places. The Droid X I had before the bb was equally as bad. It is so bad I have to shell out my own money for a sprint phone to get decent service.
I always figured Verizon had blanket coverage everywhere since they market it so well but their coverage where I am is really poor. Of course if you call them, they act shocked and reference their map that shows dense coverage.

Well what do yall think of the radio issue, will it be fixed with a software update or should i return it? Because im going from 5 bars one second to one or none the next, need some help here

Its sad that AT&T's 3.5G HSDPA is faster than Wimax. I have a company AT&T phone and it's way faster than my Evo.
AT&T is more expensive but I'm still attached to my OG Evo. Hopefully Sprint catches up.

Welcome to Sprint! I see you've already learned their motto..
I don't know what's up with this phones reception or data speeds. It Sux! I mean for phone reception, I get 2 less bars everywhere I go and for data I'm getting barley .5 mb when used to always get about .9 with og EVO.
Besides these issues the phone is top notch. I'm still have a couple of weeks to take it back, but I really don't want to. Hopefully these issues can be worked out soon.

I totally agree with you, if they dont fix the reception issues and data speeds im gonna have to take this thing back, not because i want to but im not gonna tolerate 1 bar at my house where i should be getting full and 50kb data speeds which is absolutely pathetic, they need to release an update to fix this issue right away, htc has really upset me with this phone

I had a bad signal too, changed the PRL in QPST to a USCellular (15110) and have great coverage ever since When I called Sprint for my MSL, I told the tech that I was planning on changing the PRL due to a bad signal, he said "that's a great idea"

Bad signal with non sense ROMS

First off I am s-on 1.15 I have been flashing sense based ROMS flawlessly. I have tried flashig both CMX as well as Paranoid Android. Each time flashing boot.IMG through fastboot first. Everything runs smooth. Although my signal is horrible. Where on all sense based ROMS I'm getting great 3g service I may have 1 bar and on the status bar it will say no data connection instead of sprint pcs or whatever. Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Update. I read Another post where someone had similar problem. I updated prl and profile. Will test out tomorrow. Off to bed. And I don't have very good service here at home regardless

Could it be an issue with the towers in your area? Sense roms are kind of jacked when it comes to reporting signal strength. Htc removed the 1x icon because they claimed it was confusing to customers, they also changed the way it reports the signal polling much like Apple did with their Iphones. There are a couple of apps although I dont remember them off the top of my head, one is crowd sourced and they record data for gprs (1x, 3g) gps, wimax, lte, wifi as well I believe and they graph the listings, another one will show real time information for signal polling.
I am not sure. Anything is possible. I live in a remote area where service is kinda spotty at home anyway. Although my wife has iPhone 4s through sprint as well. Where she will be showing 3-4 bars 3g. But I am running flex stock Rom with sense 4.1 and it definitely seems better . I will definitely look into the apps and see if that shows anything.

I really jinxed myself, I was thinking Im glad Im not that guy everything works and now 3g is dropping like crazy.
Are you in a LTE market? I've heard that when there working on upgrading 3g signals have been reported dropping. I am in between the Atlanta market and the Nashville Tn market. I'm hoping I will see some LTE soon. But like I stated my wife's is working great. I'm hoping my 3g problem hasn't infected you.

I am but theres no LTE here, there wont be for quite some time, the towers for my area are severely neglected, about 2 months ago they had just brought 3g back up and it had been down for a month and a half, i was roaming practically 2 weeks straight before the service started to come back intermittently

[Q] I need some signal help.

I live and work in the 75160 area. According to the coverage map for sprint, this is a 4g lte area. At home, Which is a somewhat rural area, I barely get lte at home even if im outside and 3g is what it is. We all know that hell. Calls and text are just fine. But again, the coverage map says i should be rockin on all levels.
At work I sit by a glass store front in a busy part of town and I get nothing but texts. I cant call without it dropping, no 3g or 4g. Not even if i go roaming.
The sprint store says my phone is fine but weve all been lied to about that before, Tech support either blames it on a tower or an outage.
Ive been here since Jan 2nd. No way an outage takes almost 2 months to fix. Others here with sprint seem to be doing just fine with lte and calls.
I have a stock htc evo 4g lte btw.
How can I see if this is a problem with the phone or if sprints coverage map is complete bs and Im screwed?
Are you on the latest firmware/radio? While I have had LTE at my house for around 6 months now, and it never drops. Once I flashed the latest firmware/radio, my SpeedTest scores almost doubled!!
Just a thought...
Sent from my White Evo LTE running MeanBean, using XDA Premium
I just did the OTA last week but does that update the radio as well?
Software is version 3.16.651.3 710RD
If your stock and accepted the ota you will have the newest radios and firmware.

[Q] Does this phone have LTE issues?

I'm considering making the move from Sprint to T-Mobile. I have the HTC One and I really like it, but the phone is not the greatest at maintaining an LTE signal, similar to how the Evo LTE was. I've read on here that the One on Verizon also has this issue. Since T-Mo is GSM, is the One on T-Mobile the same compared to other LTE phones on T-Mobile, or does it also not maintain an LTE signal as well as its counterparts?

Yea I saw that there was an update a couple of months ago that addressed LTE issues. Is that the latest radio update that you're referring to?
I have the phone for over a month. I'm in a strong LTE area. I've had zero issues.
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
That's great to hear. I was concerned that the phone had issues holding it and would instead fall back to HSPA+ when the signal became weak.
Definitely not as good at maintaining lte as nexus 4 or s4, or even iPhone 5. The update changed the way lte is read, meaning, you will have more bars. But, as far as helping actual reception, it does not. You'll drop lte in all same areas.
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
That might be market specific.
My TMO ONE is so much better with LTE after the .11 update.
It is as good if not better then my Note 2 and Nexus 4. I rotate between them but lately been finding my self liking the One a lot better..
Well the only thing I have to compare it to is my wife's S4. So far they seem about the same. And I guess if anything I can jump to something else in 6 months. What I don't like is when the signal is weak-ish, it drops the data connection. Just like my One on Sprint did. What's bothersome is that other phones don't seem to do this... Just the One.
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
Yes, the data signal is not as good as the S4 at all. It's definitely noticeable however the voice recognition works infinitely better than the S4 so the tradeoff is fine for me.
My coverage and signal are vastly better with latest radio I flashed...I went through 5 or 6 different radios until I found this one. Of course different radios may perform better for you, but the best for me is:
4A.17.3250.20_10.40.1150.04l

[Q] Sprint Spark in Irving/Dallas TX?

According to the Sprint coverage map for my 75063 zip code, there is full Spark coverage here. Yet when I went to my Sprint store at North MacArthur and I-635, my Note 3 had full 4G LTE but their display One Max only showed 3G.
The girl that waited on me said that those maps show future coverage not current, and Spark isn't turned on here yet. She also said that it will only get Spark or 3G and isn't capable of getting 4G LTE. Those both sound fishy to me, but I don't want to get stuck with only 3G again like I did when I bought a Nexus 4 for LTE before it was turned on.
From what I've seen, many others are getting good signal in Spark areas and this is supposed to be one of them. I suspect either there is a setup the store didn't do or doesn't know how to do, or the switchers aren't set up yet as described in these articles:

I posted something similar to this in the q and a section. It is capable but the bands are disabled. A future upgrade is supposed to unlock them. I'm in a standard LTE area and only get 3g. Going to go to 4.4 as soon as the ruu is done and I'll see if that fixes it...

Is there a way/setting to allow this phone to use LTE for now, like my Note 3 does, until Spark is fully implemented, or has Sprint in their infinite wisdom decided that it can only do Spark or 3G?
I can sort of understand why they didn't include the 4G WiMax and LTE antennas in phones when that switchover was made, but Spark is just the capability of using three LTE radios together. Since the LTE radios are there, I would think/hope that it's possible. Or am I missing something?
