Change Kernel - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a little question about kernel.
I have the syah -s2-v6.0b5 kernel it is quite good, but now I want to try install the Custom rom of Omni 4.4 for that I need the lastest version of CWM and Syah kernel has 6.0.1.2 CWM version; and I need to install CM 10.2 kernel
How can I change syah kernel to CM 10.2 kernel in a safe way ? I already try flashing CM 10.2 on syah recovery mode but the phone did not turn on, so I changed again to syah.
Can you help me please, I really want to try 4.4 but I'm a noob in this

Download this 6.0.4.7 recovery
forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/development-derivatives/cwm-clockworkmod-recovery-kit-kat-4-4-t2628412
Put it to internal sd.Also make sure you have a kitkat rom + gapps ready to flash there. Then follow these steps:
1.Boot to siyah recovery,make a nandroid backup
2.Flash cwm 6.0.4.7
3.Advanced - reboot recovery
4.Wipe data/factory reset
5.Wipe cache,go to advanced - wipe dalvik cache
6.Go to mount and storage - format system and preload
7.Flash 4.4 rom + gapps
8.Reboot

You can flash gustavo_s kernel that use latest version of cwm/twrp.

[Q] Can't update current rom OR install new rom! help

hey guys
i was on Temasek CM11 v142 + PA pico-gapps-20140916a + Boeffla kernel omnirom NG beta6a
now i wanna update to latest build, i mean v151
but when i follow these steps [the method that i always use]:
- wipping cache and dalvic cach
- formatting /system /cache /preload
- installing rom + gapps + kernel
after reboot, it will stay on Samsung logo for a long time and then it will reboot to the recovery menu by itself
i tried full wipe, fresh install of the latest Temasek CM11 v151 + gapps + kernel , again, same problem
even i tried without gapps or kernel, only rom, and no success
i tried fresh install of the latest Slimrom 8.6.1 with latest Slim gapps, same problem also latest L-Droid 4.0.0, no success
tried latest Philz and TWRP recovery, same problem
extra info: but when i try installing Temasek CM11 v142 [for testing] there's no problem
i think it's about something new in new builds of the roms...
can anyone help plz?

First of all,for Temasek you should use Cm kernel, not Omni kernel(Boeffla recommends). Second,if you use Philz let recovery do the wipe by choose instal new rom option afte you select factory reset option.
Flash rom then gapps then boot and after first boot ,change the kernel.

thanks for answer
i tried all of these different methods, but same problem again
i tried:
-full wipe ( "Clean to install new rom" in recovery menu) and installing Rom + gapps + kernel doesn't works, still bootloop
also i tried:
-full wipe ( "Clean to install new rom" in recovery menu) and installing Rom (only rom, without gapps or kernel) and again bootloop
tried two above methods with these roms: latest Temasek CM11 rom - latest L-Droid v4.0.0 - latest Slimrom 8.6.1 with Philz recovery and TWRP recovery
extra info: this Bootloop that i said, i mean after installing rom and rebooting system from recovery, phone will stay in "Samsung" logo for about 10 seconds and it will reboot to recovery menu automatically
another suggestion plz...

Try reflash Philz recovery ,something is wrong with recovery. Maybe it's outdated. Flash 6.48.4 is the latest one.

i'm using latest version of Philz recovery, also tried latest TWRP recovery
reflashing recovery doesn't fix this problem
current rom that i'm using is Temasek CM11 v142, when i full wipe my phone and flash this 142 again, there's no problem and phone will boot

In that case it's something beyond my knowledge. I can only reccomend the hard way and that is flashing stock rom and then all over again, rooting ,flashing recovery etc. Wait, maybe someone can help you and save you the trouble or do it as i said if it's not to much hassle for you.

2. Boot into recovery
3a. Factory Reset (Recommended to avoid any FC or bootloops) (Updates from older NightOwl Betas should work without Factory reset)
3b. Wipe the dalvik-cache in recovery after updating from an older beta!!!
4. Flash the Rom and Gapps.
5.Flash stock boot animations.
6. Reboot

S2 boots once, then stalls

Hi guys,
I successfully followed the advice on this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/help/to-mod-s2-t3189884) and I have installed CM12.1 's nightly from 29/8.
I boot in once, no problem. But on the second boot the phone bricks. The only way I can get into the system again is to load Philz kernel again and reinstall. But after the second boot the phone bricks again.
Any ideas? It may be the nightly, but even updating to the latest (31/8) didn't fix this.
I can get the CM10.1 stable to work fine, but that drain my battery faster than I can charge it.
I'd like to use 12.1, though: am I just doing something wrong that causes the bricking?
thanks,

When you say I should flash the rom, do you mean I should unzip the stock and push it with Heimdall/Odin?

I mean before flashing any custom rom flash stock rom then flash that rom which u want.
1.download stock firmware flash it with odin
2.then flash philz kernel
3.Reboot to recovery
4.Wipe Cache Partition and Dalvik/ART Cache
5.Now click on Clean to Install New ROM
6.Install the rom
7.Reboot system
Don't forget to hit the thanks button
Excellent, thank you!
A few tips to anyone looking this up:
First, I used Heimdall - but apparently Odin is quite similar.
I had to unpack the stock rom and then individually flash the factoryfs and zimage files.
I then unpacked the Phils mod and flashed the zimage again.
That was all in download mode
After that I flashed CM12 in recovery mode.

LUKE ROM installation...

Hi friends, I have currently the great Arter's Back to Noot v9 rom installed (with arter kernel 4.1) and I like to try LUKEROM 4.4.4, is it possible for me to install it securely?
Thanks in advance for your response...
1.Before flashing any rom at first flash stock rom. Because clean install is best.
2.Install any recovery cwm or philz
3.goto recovery Wipe data,Cache, Dalvik cache
4.install Luke Rom
5.Reboot system...
I still have a rooted galaxy s3 i9300 with philz recovery installed, and back to noot rom v9 installed...do I have to go back to 4.3 Samsung stock rom before flashing lukerom 4.4.4 or is it possible to do it from back to noot rom (with a clean install from philz recovery)?

1. backup
2. install recovery for kk
3. install kernel for kk
4. re-partition
5. flash CM13
6. flash gapps v.6
7. flash TWRP for CM13
is this way correct?
ps. my english isn't good, sorry
Hi
Best way is to stick to the thread by @gsstudios : " (Guide) ( Noobfriendly) Want to update to Cm 13? Read this first!
Many new users made 2 mistakes you should avoid:
1) they did not increase the System space to at least 1GB System and 4 GB Date - so they could not install any Gapps
2) they did not install the isorec-Revovery TWRP by @arnab - so they had no useful Revovery (but only the useless CM - recovery)
Which worked for me on 3 Devices:
1) Backup
2) flash pitfile 1GB System 4 GB data and the gustavo kernel (which includes CWM Recovery)
3) Do not forget to format in CWM recovery
4) Then make a clean flash and install CM 13 and the Gapps (open gapps pico) AND the isorec-recovery TWRP [email protected] ALL IN ONE GO - TO NOT REBOOT IN BETWEEN-
5) Reboot system and enjoy
