I have just tried recording my phone being dunked in water, but as soon as it went in the water the camera closed, and as its just a jug of water im testing it in, my hands are too big to go in and turn the camera back on.
at least i know its water tight xD

Just one little advise, if I may...
Don't sink your new Z2 into aquarium, especially not into aquarium with a sea water - your camera will be destroyed.. (not literally but it'll become unusable).
There's many Z1 users who reported bad things after such experiment.
Watter sometimes find passage and you got foggy lens (inside of device) you can't get nothing about it because you can't open it (you actually can but I wouldn't advise that)...
So...use waterproof for rain and accidentally water contact - I have my Z1 from the beginning and never tried to shoot pict in swimming pool... - I just don't trust them -
Z5 will, probably, have better technology/sealings.

you know what mate, i dont trust it either lol, it aint going in saltwater and i am actually expecting it to break, if it develops a fault it will be going straight back but i shall skip both phones4u and vodafone and be sending it back to sony. What you mean use waterproof for the rain???? i use my galaxy note (not waterproof) if its raining and its fine..... Z2 is rated ip58, if water gets in anywhere on its first day out the box then its faulty, end of.

Just make sure that you record yourself on another device to prove you didnt leave any of the flaps open

i will be using my note to record the whole thing, plan on merging bits of it with the vid from z2 but will keep the vids as proof.

Exactly...they will tell you your flaps were opened
No, really...I'm cleaning my Z1 wuth water, I just put it in a sink and never had any problems...
I just don't believe it would stayed fully functional after underwater photoshooting

I have my doubts about it staying fully functional afterwards as well, but apparently it can be done and it will be fine..... so i just cant resist, they'll sure as hell know about it if it breaks tho, i'll complain to every damn person employed by sony, from the ceo to the janitor lol

Haha...
Well I'm sure there are devices that were under the water and survive but when I pay 1000$ for something I try not to do experiments with it...
I saw only few underwater pictures (Z/Z1) so I guess I'm not the only one who thinks like that...
But I totally understand you and if device, like Z1/Z2 have so many sealings/protection rubbers it should bear up some torture

lol im kinda the opposite, when i spend that much on something i wanna know that it does what it claims, to be honest i will probably never use the phone underwater again, but at least i'll worry less when im playing on my phone in the bath

I have a waterproof camera and a Nokia 1020. Nokia is great when on holiday and not wet, but wet days at the beach or pool were nerve racking as I always had to keep an eye on my phone with the towels and my camera never was as good at taking pics. Few weeks ago I got a Z1 Compact for wet days. Tested it at home for water proofing and all good. Great camera. Just need to set the volume button as the shutter for underwater pics as screen is unresponsive and camera button hard to use. Even took it to the waterpark with no issues.
Only problem was the screen felt too small so I got the Z2 thinking I'd give the Z1C to the wife. Got it yesterday and loved it. Based on good experience with the Z1C, I just expected waterproofing to be as reliable. After setting it up, I finally had a chance to test it by dipping into a pitcher of water and tested the camera. Camera button so much better than Z1 and all seemed to work. Suddenly I see bubbles, camera shuts off, flap warning pops up (flaps were completely closed) and phone dies. Took it out immediately and water is running out of microphone holes at bottom and apparently from around the frame. What a let down! Just hoping Sony or vendor are cool about a replacement. Had it all of 2 days. Got wet in 15 cm water and died although all flaps completely closed.
Still, compared to Z1 Compact, the body stiffness and frame flush with the glass feel far more flimsy on the Z2. Now that its got water in it, I can almost squeeze it and water seems to leak from around the aluminum frame. Contemplating sticking with the Z1 Compact for a year until tech improves if I can get my money back. Otherwise might try the SGS5. Really bummed as I loved the Z2, but I don't need just another smartphone, I need one that has a good camera and can survive the pool.

Personally I can't understand why some are so eager to dunk it in water just to test the water proofing, I mean if you have a crash proof car you ain't gonna crash it into a wall to test it.

Well, if you buy the phone to be able to use it in the water, it's better to test it out before you're in a situation where you need the phone and it just dies on you. Of course, if you never intend to get the thing wet, obviously you have no need to test this feature.

Me and @waynekirby made a little video with both our z2's video is taken with Xperia T

haha, as would i my kamikaze brother..

Well, it got it's first water test today, and . . . well it passed!
I was on the golf course using the phone as a golf GPS when it threw it down and everything got drenched. The phone has survived, but was more or less unusable when the screen was wet. Several rain drops seemed to act as finger presses, launching random programs, which was quite annoying as I had to keep drying the phone to get back to the GPS screen. But I suppose the main thing was that the phone survived the deluge

Cracked screen - Warranty?

It seems I am one of the unlucky ones, who by accident break their phones while having it in the pocket. A week after I bought the Z Ultra, I discovered that the phone was bent, i.e. the corners were a couple of millimeters taller than the middle of the phone, which I decided to remedy by bending it back once in a while. But alas, it is broken now.
After looking at the picture, people are probably going to say, that its caused by bumping into something, but I can pretty much rule that out, as I always have the power button on the phone facing my important pants, which means that the screen is facing my left leg. If I bumped into something, then my important parts would hurt as well.
The big question is: are they going to fix it under warranty, or should I fix it myself?

As you can see, the cracks starts beneath the power button, and moves across to where the speaker is. It looks very much like it couldnt handle the stress any more, on the corners?
You've probably bent the frame too much when having it your pants pocket, and it probably couldn't handle the stress at one point and snapped.
Will it be covered by your warranty? I doubt it. Don't you have some insurance?

Yeah, that sounds plausible.
I do have insurance, but I have to pay a deductible of 140€ / $193, or almost 1/5 of the price of a new Z Ultra.

Yeah, that sucks, but do you have any choice? You can either sell it as it is for a very low amount of cash, you can keep the screen cracked and hate your Ultra, or you can invest €140 into it and also get some money back if you're going to sell it down the road.

This happened to me a week ago. I was texting and I had just put it back in my pocket and it vibrated and I went to text the person back and it was cracked and I couldn't do anything. I called the lady that finally sent me a new phone for free the last time my phone broke. This time she told me that this is a problem with the phone and has been happening to many people and I should get it done for free. I hope she is right because I have sent my phone back but I have not heard from sony yet which is not surprising because I had to email the a bijillion times last time to even get a response about my phone that they couldn't fix due to a operating system problem. This has never happened to me with other phones. Don't get me wrong I love my phone and missed it dearly since i sent it back last monday breaking on sunday. I can not wait to get it back because using an old laggy s2 is not fun. Which I have had for 2 years and never had really bad problems with it. Only lags because the rom I use is horrible and cant flash another rom because my recovery doesn't work like it should. Back on topic. I have had this phone since november and it has broke twice. I will be mad if I have to pay anything since i got this new replacement one in december. I will pay what they want me to though but paying 680$ for a phone that breaks every month is not cool. For 680 I should get a phone that last a lifetime. I am considering selling my baby. But I really don't want to even though it breaks a lot. I love it either way. I will update you if I have to pay anything but for now it is in Texas where I sent my old phone back. Ill keep you update.

Im planning to buy a Z Ultra but these issues about suddenly cracking Z Ultra screens are keeping me away. What were you doing when it broke? Maybe you just didn't noticed that you put pressure on it.

I really dont know how you guys do it, I've had the ZU over 6 months dropped it a good few times onto concrete (with and without case), work in a dusty (and sticky) environment, have the ZU bounce around in a truck in 'off road' situations...

Cracked screen, warranty replacement unit issued - UK

So, a couple of weeks back the top of my screen got less and less responsive, then went numb.
The display was still working fine, just the touch had gone funky!
Previously I had updated to first official 4.2.2, and the phone used to get super hot, I didn't think anything of it as most of my other devices did the same at one point or another. Turns out my phone had become a casualty of the overheating / hairline crack fault.
I spoke to an online advisor who booked me in to have it assessed and repaired, and right before I sent it off I showed my housemate the waterproof function. Turns out that had failed too... an hour or so later the screen went murky and the indicator had turned slightly pink!
I wrote a little cover note explaining that the device also seemed to have suffered water damage, and sent it off expecting to have to pay to get it back.
Got an email from Sony Xperia Customer Support today confirming that:
"engineers have attempted to repair your handset under the terms and conditions of the Sony Limited Warranty. The fault on your handset, although covered by warranty, was not repairable so we have provided a like for like exchange unit"
So looks like if the worst does happen, they're being nice about it in the UK too
Lucky u...
Some user cant claim as the sceen crack itself...
Even water damage were to be blame to the user when the sticker turn red...

took nearly 2 weeks. The email was only sent yesterday and my new phone arrived today Seems they've given me my old back panel too, before it got damaged there was some crap that got inbetween my protective case and the back of the phone which etched away at the plastic film on the glass. The new one has marks all in the same places but I have a new phone carcass, screen, motherboard, IMEI etc
And the water sticker turned pink after my screen died, before I sent it off to service I stuck it in a bowl of tap water to show my pal, 2 or so hours later all it did was vibrate when you pressed the power button, then I checked the litmus and BAM! pink.
Nice to know companies offer decent customer service, I hate a Moto RAZR and they replaced a broken screen without question for free which was a great suprise.

hey, an update on what happened with mine..
Basically same happened to mine as yours.. although it was just my screen went dull after water damage.. Then I went to Egypt, and on the flight there the screen started acting weird and wouldnt let me touch anywhere, and the water sensors went from very pale pink to red! So I got home on 15th May and sent it the next day.
Received it back on the 28th May and straight away noticed that the top left (charger) port flap was missing the protective seal, meaning waterproofing feature wouldn't work. I phoned them right away and they said I was to send it back. I explained to them that I'd need to delay sending it away as I was going away for 3 weeks. So now I'm back I was just about to package it all up etc ready for sending off tomorrow.. I took of my case (cheap plastic one that didn't fit very tightly) and the side bezel came straight off, aslong as the bottom bezel!!
So, I've attached a letter along with the phone explaining my rage lmao. The phone I sent was only 3 weeks old and I get it back and there's massive scratches on rear glass etc!
Pic attached of bezel.

God that's horrendous!
I must admit the phone I got back had scratches on the back too, but so did the one I sent in, so I thought the kept my battery cover like all the old phone warranties used to (anyone else remember that?)
Only complaint I've had with the replacement is that the speaker on this one is terrible!
On my original phone the bass from the speaker shook the phone in my hand. This one is just weak and completely lacking in bass
Can't be without it again though, so for now I'm using the GPe ROM as it seems to offer the loudest sound output for this particular handset.
Not sure if my next handset will be another Sony or not at the moment, I do live my phone (battery life, signal reception, and screen quality are insanely pleasing to me) but there are little niggles with touch responsiveness, speaker output (yes I know they trade off volume for watertightness, but my Mrs Z1 and the Z2s are way better) and Bluetooth. The Bluetooth has been shocking on both my c6833s.

Horrendous indeed lol!
When I sent mine in was literally 3 weeks old and hadn't been used that much since I was still using my S4 at the time and had case and protector on since the day I got it so was almost brand new.
Regards to the volume I've noticed the same, where as my partners Ultra is much louder and has more bass.
Im thinking about getting rid of the ultra after only having it a very short 3 months lol. If they put a flash in it, improved sound, and the awful touch screen then I'd defo upgrade to that, but seems like Sony has abandoned the ultra's production !
Don't forget, the ZU2 is due out soon enough... That's the trouble with these fancy phones coming out every 6 months! I wonder if it's some sort of kernel thing re: speaker bass, I've tried a few but no success as yet. Touch response seems better on doom kernel for no apparent reason, afaik it's the exact same touchscreen module in the doomlords kernel as you get with stock but it seems to work better. Also religious cleaning of the screen helps, and I don't run a screen protector.

[Q] Ultra ruined.

Hi Everyone,
So I was on holiday with my beloved Ultra, and using it in the pool. Cool thing is, this phone is waterproof! That's what I thought until I got on the plane a few hours later and upon trying to use my phablet the touch screen stopped responding. It seemed to function OK, I just couldn't unlock it or use it as there was some kind of hyperactive spectre flying around inside making it seem like the touchscreen was possessed. I looked a little closer, and not only was there condensation visible in both camera lenses, but upon opening the usb cover there was also moisture inside there. I opened the other side, and the moisture indicator was still white, so I think the problem was specifically with the usb port cover.
Anyway, it's not covered under any kind of warranty as I bought it overseas, and I have taken it to a repair shop who confirmed that it's water damaged and that they would need to fix the damaged USB port and replace the screen to make it work again. I just want to buy a new one as it would be cheaper than getting it fixed, but I have some data/apps on the old one I don't want to lose. Any suggestions on the best approach? If the shop can read the eMMC and back it up, could I use that to restore data/apps onto a new phone, or am I better off just getting it fixed...
Advice/opinions appreciated.
it's a marketing trick. they are not actually waterproof.
I guess this guy's luck was bad. Mine had contact with water a couple of times and thankfully it lived upto its waterproofness promise

This is a stupid reply. I brought it with me in the pool with my kids, made photos and videos underwater (touch block + volume rocker), no problems at all.
Same goes with my wife's Z.
Of course, if you go swimming with the USB flap open, well, you're an idiot. (Not that I accuse OP of being one, just that 80% of the time when I saw someone with a faulty phone/laptop/tablet it was not working because of THEM).

Hopefully someone replies with some advice that is actually helpful... FYI I have used it in the pool (and had it underwater) multiple times before without problems. I always make sure the seals are sitting properly when I close them so I am doubtful it was user error...
The usb port is fully brpken?
I think it's corroded, but definitey doesn't work.

without usb and screen it will be difficult for you to get data off yourself.

good for you, you were lucky. on the xperia forums and on here, there are many MANY people who had their phones damaged from water. Are ALL of them at fault?
however, call sony and ask them (i did):
1) what *guarantee* is there that with the flaps closed the phone will not receive water damage? they will answer none. There is no case where the warranty will cover water damage. Whether it's your fault or the phone's fault, it is irrelevant to sony. they will NOT cover it.
2) what happens if, after *normal use*... notice this: *normal use*, NOT abuse, the flaps lose their sealing ability? Does the warranty cover it? No. Warranty does NOT cover "normal use wear". Which means the flaps WILL lose their sealing ability and you end up with a non-waterproof phone. How soon? NOONE KNOWS because there is no way to actually TEST it, at least not as a USER. You MIGHT be able to have it tested at sony... but that would mean testing it every. single. time. you close any of the flaps...
your phone, at any given point, MAY or MAY NOT be waterproof. However, since you have no way to test it, it means that you CAN NOT TRUST it to be waterproof, which is, of course, means you have to treat it as NOT waterproof.
which, in the end, means the phone is not waterproof.
as a sidenote, keep any and all profanities to yourself
Blah blah. The phone is waterproof. No need to be all technical and stuff. Can it be used in water for a certain period of time? Yes.
Your post reminds me of when ships were first being built. If a boat ends up sinking from wear and tear does that mean it wasn't a floating device? Also wear and tear....that's why we check our cars at a set time for periodic maintenance because of wear and tear.
I got lax with mine and took it in the shower and got water in it, USB flap is worn. Not the companies, because I didn't take the necessary steps to make sure my phone was periodically maintained.
Just my 2 cents...

G5 quality control issues are real?

Where ever i read three are several people going through all sorts of issues with G5. Iam currently waiting for mine but all these QC issues are really starting to make me worried.
Now i am not sure wether to go ahead or cancel my pre order.
Mine is flawless. Looks perfect, no headphone issues, wifi calling works. I guess I haven't looked at screen bleed but don't really care about that. Haven't noticed any screen bloom.

I'm on the way to pick mine up so I will tell you how my unit looks . I have said that if there is any problem with the look of mine that it's going to go back
No flaws with mine. Haven't look for light bleed though. Don't care about it.

True, I dont see people complaining about iphone quality that much.
But all things aside, I am hoping that UK dont get that many defective units since we have stricter QC measure in place.
Like most things, people dont bother to write unless they have a complaint. So im sure for every complaint you hear there are a hundred happy people. I have had mine since release day and the only thing i am dissapointed in is the volume buttons being on the side(which i all ready knew).

Glad to hear u are happy with your G5.
As for the volume control I am glad that they decided to put it on the side, since its easier for me to skip tracks easily while phone is in my pocket but with my G3 i have to really search for it and most of the times i would just hit the power button or camera lens
Camera lens scratched already.
I've had the phone since April 1st and i've been very happy with, however i just noticed that my Camera's glass cover in the back is already scratched. I have a case on the phone and I've been very careful with the phone. I'm very disappointed and annoyed that this got scratched up so easily! has anyone else noticed this? just seems like a very cheap material in the back. Is there any protector i can buy or will it distort the image?

That sucks. I'm pretty certain I saw a case on Amazon that covers the camera as well. Yes, it must distort the photo a LITTLE but hopefully not much. Maybe it was the Lifeproof case?

Looks like you dont have a case on your phone, and since G5 has a camera bump it is bound to get scratched when left on a hard surface.

Keep your order. It'll be worth it for you trust me. Got mine from ee today. Absolutely amazing phone and in perfect condition with amazing build quality.
I've been very happy with the build quality of mine (had it since Wednesday), moving from a Nexus 5X the quality is in such a higher league in my opinion. So I am very happy. If build quality is your only concern I wouldn't worry, like others have said for every one complaint there will of been many more who have been fine! The phone (at least in the UK anyway) comes with a 2 year warranty (one year for the battery) so that has to go some way in showing that LG believe tha5 the build quality of the phone will last at least that amount of time. I've only got one problem so far which is that the camera, on both the normal and wide angle (although more noticeable on the wide angle) seems to distort massively, almost as though you are shooting through a plastic protective cover. Although I've picked at the camera it doesn't appear one was on it out of the box and I don't want to try too much harder in case it isn't and it is just a terrible software bug that it causing it! The camera in the 5X has been amazing in low light and this feels a bit of a deal breaker for me personally (the camera is the main feature even above battery). Has anyone else had to remove some a plastic cover from the camera after taking it out the box?

M8 i would just take it back and replace it, no point in taking a chance.
My G5 is flawless and looks amazing.
Got mine 4-1-16 and have had zero issues. No light bleed no calling or headphone jax issues no gaps and some say that the side ring or whatever around the phone is like sharp or something mine is not. Some people are saying the battery life sucks but mine is great i get 5 to 5.5 hours screen on time. Also if the screen is off over 8 hours like if i dont charge at night i get maybe 5 to 8% drop at most.
My suggestion is when you get your phone if you see anything wrong like sharp edges gaps light bleed go and exchange for a new one. I think I heard Lg has multiple plants manufacturing the phone and one of them must be effing up big time. I got mine at best buy so I dunno if that makes a difference
I've heard more complaints with the build quality of this phone than with any other in recent memory.
Yes, some may be nitpicky, but for a damn near $700 device, we're allowed to be picky.
I'm not saying it's a bad device, I'm just going by what I've been researching/seen instore. It sounds like it performs like a Champ but you may have to go through a few to get a solid built one.

I'm about to buy this phone so just wanted to make sure if anyone had issues with waterproofing or water test fails like previous Xperia phones.
Please give me your experience with this device in wet conditions
So far I have found the Z5C has way better waterproofing than the z3c, as you are not needing to move the flap to charge the phone all the time
I have used my phone in the ocean (even though it is not specifically designed to be used in the ocean) and washed it off with fresh water afterwards multiple times, and it works like a charn, no leaks or condensation
@nzzane
Great to hear!
Headphones and sound issues till dries
Also, a kind of obvious note. You will have to wait till the phone dries to charge it, and sound quality will be a bit muffled due to the water (until it dries)
@smardu @nzzane
I can live with that
ill recommend to put duct tape on the string hole
i found on my test water can enter from there only
@Superrman
Are the string hole and flaps connected like open tunnel between them (considered faulty units)?
showers, rinses(not washing machine, just tap or hose), thunderstorms A+ for this phone so far!
Sound does get muffled in direct spray and the occasional water drop changes the song lol but all in all had the phone for a year and could sell it as NEW if needed
@Tingles
I guess Sony waterproof smartphones are getting better and better!
rip
I ran mine under a tap and five minutes later the screen stopped working lol.

Yea so I got my z5c back from repair and somehow I damaged the screen with water when running it under a tap. So I guess mine wasn't that waterproof...

Our device has these ratings
IP6X. Dust tight.
IPX5. Protected against low-pressure water jet spray for at least 3 minutes.
IPX8. Protected against the effects of continued immersion in water at depths greater than 1 metre. The exact conditions are specified for each device by the manufacturer.
Here's the address for proper precautions for our device, plus some other info.
http://support.sonymobile.com/global-en/dm/waterproof/
Although now that you have had it repaired I would be a little more delicate with that device.:fingers-crossed:
When your phone gets opened, generally consider it to lose its water proofness. However I have been able multiple times using hot glue to perfectly seal it again.
Remember there's an easy and reliable way to check if your Xperia is water proof: Xperia Water Resistance Test
