Can someone explain to me what trip counter means? Where do I see if mine is tripped or not?
It is a counter on your phone that trips if you have installed custom firmware. Sorry to say I can't tell you where to look because I don't care about mine
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
Trip Counter (Binary Download Counter)
1. Power off Phone
2. Hold Volume- (Down) and Home Key and Power at same time. Let phone boot. While holding all three keys.
3. Once in download mode press Volume+ (up)
Here you can see the counter.
Coustom Binary Download: No
Or
Coustom Binary Download: Yes (2 counts)
how ever many counts you have.
To exit hold power button for about 10 seconds. Then press again to power up phone. (Or Pull Battery)
No this will not trip counter.

As far as I understand, no it doesn't work and if you try on the USA one, it could potentially brick your phone. I didn't want to take the risk so didn't use it, but I think the author himself said USA Variants not supported.
I rooted using the general root before knowing anything about the flash counter (coming from HTC, dont know the Sammy ways yet). After i found out, I finished with the Root without tripping the flash counter tutorial and it says "1" when i boot into download mode.
Since i have done the tutorial will my counter always stay at "1" or if i flash another rom or mod will it start adding up?
Im just wanting to know if i need to be careful with going flash crazy or not.
thanks.

It'll keep going up unless if it's your carrier's official rom, and to be honest, once you get "1" I don't think it matters if you have "2" or "48190238102931"

I'm no expert, but from all the reading I've done I have concluded that flashing non-Samsung content via Odin is what trips the flash counter, flashing a rom via CWM will not.

not doubting you but wanted to be sure if true for all roms and i guess maybe even carrier models? Some of the sites I read said other wise. Also, you need to raise the counter at least "1" time to get Root Access though, no?
which means we still need a reset app like the international ver. have.
..and what is max I can do ? Or does it matter if I have 500 counts? What is it for? Dees it hurt me in any kind of way?
mine says "custom binary download: yes (1 count)
I installed 2 roms (same rom just updated version)

Negative. I just rooted and installed CWM on my AT&T GS3 and my counter is still at 0. Flashing via Odin is what trips the flash counter, flashing through CWM doesn't. That being said, I'd imagine most if not all devs are going to make their roms flashable zips so we don't have to worry about the counter. I rooted via Odin but didn't trip the counter thanks to the devs who figured out a way to get around it. The thread is stickied in the AT&T dev forum.

I don't think there's a method out to do that yet, sit tight.

there's no max, its just a way of voiding warranty
So we need to brick our phone good enough that they cant read the counter to get warranty replacement???
once the counter is [1] or higher, you already voided your warranty...there's really no max out or loop back to [0]
Is warranty off if i just root and don't change ROM?
Yes ..... if you are rooting your phone means your warranty is gone........

Yes ....
If we manage to do flash counter zero then warranty not void........
And we can use triangle away application for doing flash counter zero.......
Sent from my GT-I9300
Plain truth of the matter is root = void warranty even with a reset counter as you have not removed root .
So you remove root by flashing a stock rom .Reset rom counter and check status is not custom .
Also check in settings about phone that its not showing as modified .Plus delete any root apps like CWM or TA or Superuser .
The Samsung letter to service personal regrading void warranty and what to look for is freely available on the internet .

According to this thread, if you live in Europe, rooting doesn't necessarily cancel your warranty. Samsung would have to prove that rooting played some role in your phone's problem. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1998801
The article is correct but not complete.
In the first year the seller has to prove you caused the issue, in the second one you actually have to be able to prove you didn't.
However the simple fact is that:
- if the phone fully boots you can flash stock rom and reset the counter as normal. If necessary through an external USB keyboard if touchscreen is broken
- if the phone only gets into recovery but cannot be flashed, a correct TriangleAway will have taken care of setting it to a nice 0.
The "device modified" in the real system cannot be accessed since it won't boot obviously.
- if the phone doesn't turn at all (even with JIG) the "device modified" cannot be access either.
There's still a possibility of the repair service manually checking the filesystem for the telltale modifications, but the risk is rather very slim.
What about If I flashed cm10 then go to.Sammy service center
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
Custom rom = warranty fail .
Its also easy enough for Samsung to defend the custom rom warranty rejection under EU law as they may well show firmware is not tested .

I'm having this same problem. Accidentally backed up to my int sd card instead of ext. Can't delete it or move it from ES File Manager or by plugging the phone into my Windows machine. I went back into recovery and didn't see an option to delete from there..
I guess the recovery app is protecting them somehow, anybody know a way to get around it?

Unless I'm very confused, in the various root threads the above discussion is fairly common. The "executive summary" is flashing trips the counter and, to date, there's no way to reset it. The betting is the counter is electrically protected - that is, it's not going to be reset ever.
Can someone conclusively confirm or deny this?
There.is.NO.WAY.to.reset.knox.trip.as.of.now.

It's not magically or electronically protected, it's a flag tripped in one of the phone partitions when phone "senses" some unofficial code is being flashed.
I believe if somebody can backup that thing before root then restore it after, it'll show zero.
Sorry - electrically as in "fusible link" or something equally unalterable. I hope I'm wrong.

No. That would not be economical for Samsung when they recondition or refurbish devices(rooted previously) returned from customers. It's much easier for them to just re-partition,jtag and flash factory image.
I see what you're saying. I'm not sure that mass refurb companies (not just manufacturers) are going to take the time to do anything that takes any real time (e.g., flashing). The volume of phones involved probably makes it cheaper to just toss phones that don't pass a quick check. Or not.
Anyway, until someone finds out how to manage the knox counter, it's all just supposition.
From what I gather, this root/recovery method trips knox, but then you are able to disable knox via SuperSU. I have 5 GS5's ready to be rooted (delivered yesterday).
A few questions for those who have done it:
1. After tripping and then disabling knox, what is shown as the knox hex code? 0x0 or 0x1? Or nothing at all since it's disabled?
2. What does tripping knox actually do? I understand it's a warranty related item, but what kind of warranty things can TMO reject based on knox? Battery blowing up? I'm sure they can't reject manufacturing defects in the phone itself (dead pixels, etc), correct?
I see the Updated Towel method has a way to get to NF6 without tripping knox, but it's far more complicated and has too many "ifs". I'm more inclined to deal with tripping knox as long as the consequences are severe.
Any feedback is appreciated...

This may be of assistance:
It's a thread about the KNOX Warranty, etc.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2477209&page=7
I read the thread about using TR to Root NF6 after you have NE6.
Seems to work.
I had ANCH which I Towelrooted.
I then Odin'd NE6 Samsung Full Stock Tar and Towelrooted.
I then installed SuperSU.
KNOX Counter is still at 0x0 :good:
I'll wait on NF6. Towelroot may be able to root NF6 in time.
Ok, I've had this phone rooted since a few months back using the towelroot method, the phone has been giving me issues this past week so I wanted to do a factory reset and unroot the phone.
The TR method worked in rooting the phone but I was never able to access the recovery mode, something like seandroid enforcing error.
Well, I noticed in one forum that I would be able to use the updated SuperSU app on the chainfire website to unroot. I followed this process but still couldn't boot to recovery. I then dowloaded the mj4 tar and tried to push it through odin 3.07 and it says fail.
Now my phone is bricked, kies 3 doesn't recognize it for an emergency firmware update, and I'm in the process of downloading nc5 to try that one.
Please if anyone can help me out in figuring how to restore my phone I would greatly appreciate it, I start classes on Monday only have this weekend to fix it. Any advice would be awesome, thanks!
If you can boot into download mode ( press the power button, home button, volume up button, at the same time) great !! first download Odin to PC desktop here is the link http://www.downloadodin.info/download-odin-1-85 then you need an OS .tar ( kk 4.4.2 NC5 ) here is the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2712205 download to PC desktop.
Extract the zip NC5 file to PC desktop this changes it to a .tar file. Now boot device into download mode, then extract and open odin on desktop, connect device to PC via USB cable a box in upper left corner will light up COM: doesn't matter what color it is just shows a connection. Click on the PDA box another box will open click on NC5 .tar file it should show in box to the right of PDA box. Now your ready don't touch anything else, click start and it will say pass when done this will take at least 15 minutes.
I have unrooted my Note 3 a couple of times, the best way is a new OS through Odin.

No problem, now that you are back with the living. Lol !!! Remember, once you upgrade to KK 4.4.2 NC5, you can downgrade to NAB but NO further !!! The bootloader in KK 4.4.2 NC5 will not let you go back to Mj4, you will soft brick the device.
Is your warranty still KNOX 0x0 ?

If you join the sam mobile website You can look your phone up by model number. Once you do download the .tar and open it through Odin. Make sure your phone is in download mode. Use the PDA box and locate the .tar and load it through Odin. It will restore Knox and reset your phone to factory.
Hope this helps.

Well actually to answer the question fully, yes they can reset Knox 0x1 warranty e-fuse. However, only for Exynos processor based note 3's. Sprint note 3's use a Qualcomm processor. There getting closer, you can read up on this in Developer Discussions/A few things about Knox.

What you see in download mode would be the actual status of the knox on your device.
Since Knox is tripped it's permanent and Knox is now disabled, the warranty is now void and you will no longer be able to use Samsung Pay on that device.
